But we know this change in their lives is sometimes (often!) hard for everyone involved, so we’re here with information to prepare you both as much as possible. Sign up to our Parents and Carers Newsletter* which will give you the inside track on what you and your child need to know when applying to Abertay University. Sign up below: *While we refer to parents here, this guide is for parents, guardians, carers and any supportive adults who want to help.

CITY LIFE A

THE CITY OF DISCOVERY

We’re proud to say Dundee is an awesome place to study… and live.

When you join Abertay, you’re not just picking a place to study, you’re picking your new home. Abertay is close to the beach and the glorious Scottish countryside. Combined with bags of culture and the city being the cheapest place to live in the UK for students, it’s clear to see why Dundee is a top student destination.

More Info: abertay.co/living-in-dundee

SCOTLAND’S SUNSHINE CITY

If you’re looking to catch some rays and get a regular dose of vitamin D, then Dundee is the place for you. Facing due south, ‘Sundee’ has more hours of sunshine than any other Scottish city.

Try: to bring your sunglasses.

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC!

From The View to Be Charlotte, The Associates to Danny Wilson, music is embedded in Dundee’s soul. You never know which stars of the future you might be seeing, and big names regularly play here.

Try: listening to our Dundee music playlist.

SHOP LOCAL

The city is full of independent shops selling local products. Couple that with the usual high street chains like Waterstones and Primark, there’s plenty of retail therapy when you need it.

Try: buying THE perfect vintage outfit in our amazing pre-owned shops.

TAKE ME TO THE BEACH

Nearby Broughty Ferry, AKA ‘the Ferry’, has an idyllic beach. There’s open water swimming, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and plenty of golden sand to relax on.

Try: hiring an electric bike and cruising to the beach from campus.

GO WILD…

Tentsmuir, featured in the BBC’s ‘Springwatch’, is 20 mins away - a forest full of hiking/biking trails and miles of golden sand. You can go dolphin and seal spotting on the River Tay or swimming and kayaking in one of the nearby lochs.

Try: doing the ‘Dook’, a sponsored dip in the River Tay on New Year’s Day.

…OR GO OUT!

Local nightclubs regularly host big name DJs, and there are live music venues all over the city. You’ve got two cinema chains and an art house cinema as well. And obviously lots of great bars and pubs to visit. There’s even Draffens, a secret speakeasy hidden away in the city centre…

Try: a cocktail in Draffens (but don’t tell anyone, it’s a secret).

SPORT AND EXERCISE? YOU BET!

With two professional football teams, there are plenty of matches to watch during the season. The cycle paths extend for miles, and there’s a skate park about 10 mins’ walk from campus. Our ice hockey team, The Dundee Stars, are one of the best in Britain.

Try: the steep walk up Dundee Lawworth it for the fabulous views.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD

We have artisan butchers, locally made Italian ice cream, fine dining, cafes and coffee shops galore, and even a deli called The Cheesery. Plus, Dundee is famous for its bakeries. Visit Clarks literally whenever you like (it’s open 24 hours a day) or scoff a fudge doughnut from Fisher and Donaldson in the city centre.

Try: a local pie - called a ‘peh’ - or a pasty called a ‘bridie’.

PLACE TO

CITY OF CULTURE

The V&A Dundee is just five minutes’ walk from campus, with new exhibitions twice a year. There’s the Rep Theatre where Brian Cox (‘Succession’, anyone?) got his start, art and films at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), and even more art and history at the McManus Gallery or Verdant Works. The Eden Project is building its first-ever ecological attraction in Scotland, and a new e-sports arena is planned for the waterfront.

Try: a DCA course, using your student discount, obviously!
