Biomedical Science

Nicola Robson

Specialist Biomedical Scientist at NHS Tayside

“Abertay has a real family feel to it. I liked that the lecturers knew every student by name and that they genuinely cared about students reaching their potential. The degree is delivered by a combination of academics and healthcare professionals, and because of this you get the best of both worlds. “

Study Biomedical Science at Abertay and you’ll learn the techniques you need to conduct vitally important scientific tests, which underpin the diagnosis and treatment of human disease. This scientific analysis contributes greatly to the clinical outcomes of patients.

If you follow the standard route, you’ll be well equipped for a career in life sciences - for instance, working in a laboratory setting looking at new drugs.

Best of all, you’ll learn in cutting edge facilities at the UK’s Top University for Teaching Quality 2021. Please note: After following a common pathway for two years, you’ll take either the Standard or the Applied programme route. The Applied route includes an 18-week placement and is particularly relevant for those keen to become a Biomedical Scientist in the NHS.

BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science

We teach you how to explore the biochemical processes that occur in the human body. You’ll learn how the human body responds to disease, and how to use your knowledge to play a part in identifying diseases of all kinds.

Major subjects taught on the programme include: • biochemistry • immunology • bioethics • microbiology • cell biology • pathology • genetics • physiology • haematology • public health
