Physical Activity and Health

Alison Chapman

Special Education Teacher at Al Karamah School, Abu Dhabi

“My degree has been massively helpful. I wouldn’t have got the job without it. I work at a school for pupils with autism. It’s an American school but it’s for local children in Abu Dhabi. The children have varying levels of autism. I work in the PE department, doing gym with them and I love it. It’s an amazing job, and it’s quite a new school so it’s very up-to-date - the facilities are incredible. “

Physical Activity and Health draws on the core disciplines of physiology, psychology and sociology, so you learn about the effects of physical activity and inactivity on individual health, the needs of general and special (e.g. pregnancy, obesity and type 2 diabetes) populations. You also find out how to incorporate and increase physical activity and health at the individual, community and population level.

It also includes areas such as public health policy and health promotion that teach you how to design, develop, implement and assess physical activity interventions – a crucial part of improving the health and wellbeing of the general population. For the first two years, you would take Sport and Exercise as a foundation. After that, you can specialise or carry on studying this pathway.
