Welcome to the 2016

I am delighted to welcome you to Dare ProtoPlay 2016. Dare ProtoPlay is the showcase event for Dare to be Digital, Abertay University’s international games design competition for students. Once again, teams of superbly talented students from all over the world have faced the serious challenge of designing, building and testing a new computer game for you to play today. This year the 16 teams worked in their home universities before travelling to Dundee to be part of Scotland’s biggest video games festival. As well as showcasing the games designed and built by the Dare teams, we also bring you indie game developers from across the UK and abroad. Be sure to walk through to the Caird Hall to take a look.

Abertay University has remained at the forefront of developing talent, creativity and expertise in games and digital media, and continues to lead the way in applying games technology to an increasing range of other academic and industrial fields. Dare to be Digital is just one aspect of our work in this area, and I invite you to visit www.abertay.ac.uk to find out more. There is a fabulous array of UK and international talent and creativity on show here at the Caird Hall and City Square, and many of these young people will become the game development stars of the future.

The success of Dare to be Digital and Dare ProtoPlay is due to continued support of our sponsors and partners and the mentors who have given their time to work with the students. I am grateful to them all for their support.

Since launching the world’s first computer game degree course almost 20 years ago,

Thank you for joining us.

Caird Hall From DIY Design to DMA Design (1980 – 1990) Spectrum’s distinctive rainbow motif hit the streets of Dundee in April 1982, fresh off the Timex production line. This revolutionary home computer gave people the ability to make their own games. Whether it was a craving to replicate the arcade games of America or an overwhelming desire to understand how things worked, British kids become great bedroom programmers giving rise to a DIY gaming phenomenon. From DIY Design to DMA Design is an exploration of Dundee’s chapter of home grown computer-literate designers.

Dare Indie Fest

What’s going on in Caird Hall? 1.

2.

DARE INDIE FEST

Over 20 indie games studios from Scotland, England and across the world showcase their latest creativity in games innovation. This year, we are particularly focusing on experimental games and serious games - games that serve a purpose other than just entertainment.

AWKWARD ARCADE

The Awkward Arcade is a real life experimental video arcade, showcasing games that make you move and think in ways uncommon in mainstream games culture. The majority of these games have never been shown outside of a purely digital environment before.

They have been specially curated and built into arcade cabinets just for the Awkward Arcade.

3. GLOBAL CARDBOARD CHALLENGE

A video game starts from an idea. The idea can be developed through cutting up paper boxes. Inspired by 9-year old Caine’s game arcade, Global Cardboard Challenge will challenge you to create a game arcade using paper boxes.

4.

DESIGN YOUR OWN GAME

Create stories, games, and animations using Scratch software with some guidance from our volunteers.
