Ethical Hacking From a university at the forefront of cyber security abertay.ac.uk

Cybercrime is a rapidly escalating threat and rarely out of the news. People with the right knowledge and qualifications in cyber security are in short supply, not only by business, but in the public and non-profit sectors too. Cisco recently reported one million job openings in 2016, with demand expected to rise to six million by 2019.

ABOUT US With a single security breach costing loss of reputation, consumer trust and often money, staying ahead of malicious hackers is essential to organisations. They need people who can detect weaknesses in their system and protect it from those intent on causing damage. Difficult to achieve in an environment of cloud storage, their customers’ increasing use of mobiles for online transactions and their own data capturing needs. The result is a booming demand for ethical hackers as companies act to protect themselves.

WHY CHOOSE US? • Abertay’s Ethical Hacking degrees are among the UK’s leading vocational security programmes. We launched the world’s first Ethical Hacking degree in 2006 and are the only university to offer a Masters programme in Ethical Hacking. • You’ll be at the forefront of new developments in security and learn how to take an offensive approach, such as how to break systems and circumvent security defences. • You’ll get the option to join Abertay’s Ethical Hacking Society and build industry contacts while studying, through their organisation each year of Scotland’s largest security conference, Securi-Tay. • You’ll develop the core skills that allow you to take roles in a variety of

companies where computer security is a major issue, such as in penetration testing, network management, computer programming or web development. • We’ll get you ready and prepared for work as our courses are delivered in a project based, entrepreneurial and enterprise culture. Our ties with the security industry are close, as demonstrated by our guest speakers. • You’ll work in our dedicated ethical hacking lab, specially created for cyber security work, which will give you experience as close to real as it can be. • Our ethical hacking degrees are accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

You’ll start with the background technical aspects of computing so you know how systems function. We’ll then provide you with the knowledge and skills to understand the mechanics behind hacking attacks and how to develop countermeasures. You’ll study the latest security flaws and get experience in how to investigate, analyse, test, hack and ultimately protect real-life systems. You’ll also gain the knowledge and technical skills to undertake security audit testing on computer networks and systems.

OUR MASTERS DEGREE

When you join us as a postgraduate student or researcher, you’ll be joining a community of creative like-minded

scholars and will automatically be provided with access to our dedicated study and social spaces. This is a forum to meet, work and learn with other researchers and postgraduates from across the University. You’ll benefit from training and professional development opportunities as well as support with funding applications, placement opportunities, teaching support, public engagement and outreach activity.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

There is a vibrant job market for ethical hackers and our graduates have little difficulty finding employment. Receiving a job offer before graduation is not infrequent. Employers our graduates work for include: Dell Secure Works, Goldman-Sachs, GCHQ, NCC Group, NCR and Prudential.

Many of our graduates become security testers, but some prefer working in defensive roles in areas such as network management and software development. Others go into consultancy or set up their own companies offering ethical hacking services.

The lab includes 70 PCs and space for project work. Additionally, there are servers within the space, also isolated from the university network that can be used as targets or otherwise for security work. You’ll have access to a very broad range of software, tools and operating systems.

YOUR LEARNING SPACE

OUR DEGREES

You’ll have access to our dedicated ethical hacking lab, created for cyber security work. It’s isolated from the main university network so staff and students can experiment with aspects of ethical hacking in a safe, controlled environment. Essential, considering this is where you’ll likely be examining how viruses are made undetectable by malicious hackers, or exploiting flaws in realistic websites or mobile applications.
