HISTORY AND LAND RECLAMATION

Before the reclamation of the East Coast area, Siglap at the southern coast of Bedok was a vast coconut plantation owned by the Frankel Brothers. During 1920s, increased accessibility and the rising desire to seek respite away from the hustle and bustle of town life, many of the plantation landlords and other wealthy individuals from the city started to build holiday bungalows and resorts, displacing the existing kampongs by the sea.

LOCATION OF DETACHED HOUSES

Low-rise, low density typology is one of the most elitest form of housing in Singapore. With sky-rocketing land values, detached houses come at a premium buying, living and maintainance costs. Detached house land use typology has been preserved in the above marked locations since history. X

Siglap park connector runs along the siglap canal and various housing estates connecting interlinking several parks of the region. It connects Bedok Reservoir Park, Bedok Town park, Telok Kurau Park and East coast Park.

HISTORY AND TRANSFORMATION

Residential fabric along east coast road

SECTION

Telok Kurau park acts as a lung space, between the 2 housing typologies, across the canal. Landed developments with a concentric pattern evolves in the region, around a garden The Siglap canal breaks the rigidity of the grid. Apart from being a physical barrier, an underlying racial demarcation can be sensed at this node.

ORIGINAL TYPOLOGY Landed developments with Siglap canal frontage had access from a wider road abutting that side Wider roads, lesser ground coverage and emphasis on pedestrian movement Increased physical and visual access to the canal was part of the communal identity of the space

MICRO ANALYSIS

MORPHOLOGY OF BUILT CHARACTER

EVOLVED TYPOLOGY Landed developments restricted frontage towards the canal with reduced pedestrian pathway Road width is just adequate to cater to two way vehicular traffic. Albeit narrow, they have defined pedestrian and landscape provisions. Poor visual and physical connection with the canal, ignorant of the potential that the Siglap canal holds in the region.
