AQUATECTURE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ON WATER. The best way to prepare for the future is to Design for it.

MURUD

HYPOTHESIS

The thesis will give important to the rising threat of water levels around the western coast of India and how we could design for the future to adapt to these climatic and topographical changes .It will also focus on rejuvenating old abandoned spaces and finding a harmonious balance between the old and the new. The design will have to adapt to land and water and hence will be an amphibious structure .The design will also help improve the neglected Padmadurg fort also knows as kasa fort which is named after the kasa rock on which it is built upon.

PADMADURG FORT

17.77°N 73.12°E.

THE IDEA

1.The Idea is to go beyond the waterfront as it offers enormous flexibility to us. The project will help enhance the understanding of construction on water .It will also focus on renewable resources and sustainability on various levels . 2.Understanding History and rejuvenating neglected spaces. 3.Expand the horizon on which people interact with there historical monuments. 4.Building a research facility to understand the ocean.

THE CHALLENGE

1.To Design scar-less developments, by which both during as well as after the lifespan of the functions, the building leaves neither a physical footprint nor carbon footprint. 2.To stop the various drug traffic routes via the fort to India through the western coast. 3.Understand the dynamic of designing with a preexisting structure. 4.Research various other means of construction on water .

CHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ

KASA FORT (PADMADURG FORT) RECENT STUDIES SUGGEST THAT WITH THE RISE IN CONSUMPTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND BURNING FOSSIL FUELS IS RESULTING IN THE MELTING OF ICE CAPS AND BY THE YEAR 2100 THE WATER LEVEL WILL RISE BY 48” TO 78”ACROSS THE GLOBE

The site is situated in along the western coast of india of the coast of Murud . Murud is a taluka city and a municipal council in Raigad district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Situated at a distance of 42 km (26 mi) from Alibag, Murud is a tourist destination. Padmadurg is one of the sea forts built by Maratha Kings in 1676 in order to control the activities in Arabian sea. Although is fort was left incomplete due to the wars, It has architectural features from all the ruling parties and thus is a monument that needs to be conserved and restored but currently is in a very bad state .Its rich history will be engulfed by the ocean and lost forever if certain actions aren’t taken immediately.

SITE CONDITION

SUN PATH

WIND DIRECTIONS

LOW WAVE MOVEMENTS

The site was selected with respect to the forts condition and the frequent flooding by the sea due to the high and low tides. The water level rises an nearly covers a quarter of the land and then retreats doing the low tide. Tidal movement can be observed 4 times a day with 2 high tides and 2 low tides . The fort is built on rock also know as (Kasa Rock ) that provides a steady foundations for any construction as long as we can channel the water around it . The site is also isolated from the mainland thus forcing the inhabitants to be sustainable. They need to adapt for the facility and push the limitations of sustainable architecture

CONSERVATION The Fort is an architectural marvel and hence needs to be conserved . The island consists partly of a competed citadel with a temple ruin and a few ruins of the british barracks . The site also consists of a water storage tank . HIGH WAVE MOVEMENTS

Water striders legs have groves that trap air, increasing water resistance of the water’s striders legs and overall buoyancy of the insect. Water acts different at the surface. Water molecules are attracted to each other and like to stay together, especially on the surface where there is only air above. The attraction between water molecules creates tension and a very delicate membrane.

The edge of the plinth is beveled to allow the force by which the water hits to be redirected back into the ocean so the building maintains its stability is harsh sea conditions. Archimedes priciple states that the upward buoyant force that is exerted on a body immersed in a fluid, whether fully or partially submerged, is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces and acts in the upward direction at the center of mass of the displaced fluid.

The fort also has 6 bastions and several archaeological marvels such has abandoned cannons and cannon balls that are important to the rich history of the fort . Several storage spaces can also be found within the fort .

RENEWABLE ENERGY

The site was selected based on certain criteria 1.Historic Importance 2.Site conditions (flooding due to the tidal movement ) 3.Conservation 4.To tap into the tidal energy for sustainable development .

The western coast of india has suitable conditions to harness the tidal energies and generate electricity . The conditions are favourable as it has . 1.hight tide ranges from 3.5- 4.8m 2.low tide ranges from o.39 to 1.4m Giving the average range of about 3m to 4m.

The Construction techniques applied to the building reuses and up-cycles plastic waste by crushing and mixing it with EPS and concrete to form a light weight means of construction on water. It uses steel reinforcements to stabilize the structure.

ACCESS POINTS

CIRCULATION SCIENTIST SCHOLARS PUBLIC

PRIVATE SEMI PRIVATE PUBLIC

BUILT VS OPEN

The existing access points were taken into account when designing the structure and the circulation was marked out according to these access points. The spaces were divided into public, semi public and private space. The public spaces could be used as exhibition centres and event spaces . Most of the land is untouched and built environment is molded around the existing structure and does not interfere with the monument.

1.

POST FLOOD

2.

3. PRE FLOOD

1. Turbines are located on the periphery to maximize the use of the changing tide. 2. Vertical farms were built and sustained by creating a closed loop system. With the help of aquaponics . 3. Pre existing structure is absorbed into the new building to rejuvenate the space. 4. The EPS foundation is supported by the water and hence is unsinkable. A closed cell Structure that is mainly 98% air.

4.

The building consists of various functions that are distributed across the floor, from research laboratories to amphi theatre for performances. The building structure helps in rainwater harvesting and tries to recycle and up-cycle most of the waste generated within the complex. The older existing structure like the fresh water well and bastions are absorbed into the new building. The building is designed to feather the surface and leave the island without a trace of it existing if it ever were to flood completely

OVERVIEW

Kolkata in all its rich heritage is also known for its urban sprawls and large scale slums. Located in the northern circars, Kolkata is prone naturally to Cyclones Flooding

The structure is surrounded by green houses where farming is carried out on a day to day basis, bringing in steady income for the people maintainig the facility. The small green houses create an environemnt that is suitable for growing a variety of crops and vegetables that can sustain the inflow of people during a crisis.

Providing a refuge centre for the locals and catering to their needs on a day to day basis with Employment Hospitality Medical facilities.

CONCEPT

The building designed in a region prone to cyclones and floods had to be streamlined and aerodynamic. The design would not only serve the community through the course of regular days but transform to serve the massses during the time of a catastrphy with its primary functions being a community centre and tranforming into a relief structure during the time of distress. The ramp acts as an exhibition space for varied art forms. The pathway connects the two buildings but also directs the wind making the structure more aerodynamic. The buildings inner walls can be folded and shifted in the time of crisis expanding the floor space and creating an open plan to accommodate more people. This helps the building transform in the time of catastrophe.

ETFE(Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) films is durable , Highly transparent and very lightweight. in comparison to glass structures. Applications for skylight in green houses for agricultural practices. The ETFE panels are fixed onto a composite bamboo framework. An oculus spans over the centre of the dome to collect the rain water in the catchment area. The central shaft has supports the farm spaces to cultivate food. The distribution of the water and collection is thus centralized with the help of the shaft.
