ART INSTITUTE CONCEPT

THE SITE

THE SITE WAS LOCATED NEXT TO A LAKE WHICH OFFERED A PICTURESQUE VIEW AND WAS ALSO THE FOCAL POINT OF THE SITE. THE SITE ALSO SLOPED GRADUALLY TOWARDS THE LAKE AND HAD MANY CONTOURS TO PLAY WITH . THE BUILDING DESIGN IS INSPIRED BY THE VARIOUS FOLDS IN AN ORIGAMI SCULPTURE. A GLIMPSE OF THE INTERIORS THAT SHOWS THE SIMPLE STRUCTURE DESIGN .

DESIGN EVOLUTION

THE BUILDING IS WELL CONNECTED AND IS SITUATED AT THE HEART OF THE SITE MAKING IT EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM ALL SIDES.

THE APPLIED ARTS STUDIOS ARE SITUATED ON THE GROUD FLOOR SO THAT THEY CAN BE EASILY ACCESSED BY THE SERVICE ROAD

CREATE OPEN SPACES

CONNECT OPEN SPACES

THE ROOF OF THE BUILDING IS UTILIZED TO THE MAXIMUM BY CREATING INTERACTIVE SPORTS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITY AREA .

BY USING THE CONTOURS OF THE SITE AND WORKING WITH THE LEVELS, THE DESIGN IS ABLE TO CREATE INTERACTIVE LEVELS ACROSS THE SCHOOL. CREATING AN APPROPRIATE ATMOSPHERE FOR A DESIGN SCHOOL.

THE BUILDING CONSISTS OF VARIOUS STUDIOS THAT HELP EACH STUDENT FOCUS ON DIFFERENT SUBJECTS TO HELP GROW THE STUDENTS INTO COMPLETE DESIGNERS .

THE BUILDING DESIGN EVOLVED BY MOVING THE LEVELS ACROSS ONE THE DESIGN FOCUSES ON ANOTHER SO THAT THE BUILDING CREATES USING LEAST AMOUNT OF A VOID IN THE MIDDLE THAT WORKS AS THE GROUND COVER BY ELEVATING CORE OF COMMUNICATION AND THE BUILDING AND KEEPING THE INTERCONNECTING RAMPS INTERACTION BETWEEN THE LEVELS CONTOURS IN MIND .

SECTION

GALLERY THE GALLERY IS AN OPEN SPACE WITH MOVABLE WALLS TO HELP THE EXHIBITOR ARRANGE HIS EXHIBITION ACCORDING TO HIS LIKING . THE GALLERY ALSO FOCUSES ON INTERACTIVE SPACES AND AN AV ROOM TO SHOWCASE THE DESIGNS . THE GALLERY WAS DESIGNED TO CHANNEL THE FLOW OF THE VISITORS TO EXPERIENCE THE ARTWORK WITHOUT ANY SPACE BARRIER. PEDESTRIAN WALKWAY

THE BAMBOO ROOF

THERE ARE 2 LAYERS OF INTERLOCKING WOVEN BAMBOO NETS IN-BETWEEN WHICH THERE IS A LAYER OF INTERLOCKED SHINGLES .

ON TOP OF THE OUTER LAYER THERE IS ANOTHER LAYER OF SHINGLES. WHICH IS FINALLY COATED WITH A THICK LAYER OF LINEN SOAKED IN TAR. FINALLY ON THE OUTER LAYER, SPLIT BAMBOO WHICH IS TREATED WITH RUBBER OIL IS LAID . A SENSE OF HARMONY IS MAINTAINED BY USING STEEL AND WOOD FOR THE BASIC STRUCTURE OF THE GALLERY. THE LAKE IS SETUP WITH ALGAE TURF SCRUBBERS (ATS) COVERED WITH NYLON NETTING TO SERVE AS A PLATFORM FOR ALGAE TO GROW UPON . ALGAE IN TURN WILL HELP KEEP THE LAKE CLEAN .

THE PLACEMENT OF THE GALLERY PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART TO ITS FUNCTION.THE LAKE VIEW OFFERS A PICTURESQUE VIEW TO ENHANCE THE VIEWING PLEASURE OF THE AUDIENCE .

URBAN DESIGN DESIGN PRINCIPLES 1. NOT TOO CHAOTIC, NOT TOO ORDERED. BY DEFINING THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BUILT SPACES BUT RETAINING ITS CONTEXTUAL CULTURAL VALUE. 2. VISIBLE LIFE BY KEEPING IN MIND THE VISUAL ATTRIBUTES OF LIFE THAT HELP INCREASE THE ACTIVITY LEVEL OF THE SPACE THUS INCREASING ECONOMY. 3. COMPACT BY INTENSIFYING THE DENSITY OF PARTICULAR ZONES, RELEASES CONFINED SPACES TO MAKE WAY FOR PARKS AND RECREATION.

THE GIVEN SPACE HAS BEEN CAREFULLY DIVIDED BY THE SECONDARY ROADWAYS AND FURTHER AGAIN BY TERTIARY ROADWAYS, THIS HELPS IN SUBDIVISION OF THE SPACES BY CHARACTERIZING THEM BY THE ACCESS ROUTES AND THE FUNCTIONING OF THE BUILDINGS IN THAT AREA.BY GIVING IMPORTANCE TO PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS THE DESIGN HAS BEEN ABLE TO TACKLE THE PROBLEMS FACED BY MAJESTIC IN 3 SIMPLE FACTORS. 1.CONNECTIVITY 2.FLEXIBILITY 3.WORKABILITY BY TACKLING THE CORE PROBLEMS OF MAJESTIC, THE DESIGN HELPS REJUVENATE SPACES THAT NO LONGER BREED LIFE BUT ARE SPACES OF DECAY

4. ORIENTATION AND MYSTERY BY DEFINING ROUTES AND PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS, THE DESIGN TENDS TO CREATE A SENSE OF ORIENTATION WHILE PROVIDING A HINT OF MYSTERY. 5. SCALE BY EMPHASIZING PUBLIC STRUCTURES, A SENSE OF HUMANITY IS IMBIBED IN THE HEART OF MAJESTIC. 6. LOCALIZE TRAM SYSTEMS OVERNIGHT ACT AS SERVICE ROUTES BY PRVIDING THE COMMERCIAL SPACES THE ACCESS WAYS THAT WERE LIMITED ON THE GROUND LEVEL.TRAM ROUTE CONNECTS THE METRO STATION AND THE PERIPHERAL BUS STOPS AROUND THE STUDY AREA ENCOURAGING PEDESTRIANS TO USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND DISCOURAGING VEHICULAR ACTIVITY, IN TURN REDUCING CARBON EMISSIONS AROUND THE SITE. THE TRAM ROUTES PASS THROUGH THE GREEN PUBLIC SPACES OFFERING TRAVELLERS A PICTURESQUE VIEW OF THE NEWLY TRANSFORMED MAJESTIC.

THE ZONES HAVE BEEN DIVIDED WITH REGARD TO THE MIXED USE PATTERN KEEPING IN MIND THE EXISTING MAJESTIC, BY SPECIFICALLY TARGETING THE DEAD ZONES OF THE AREA , FREE SPACES WERE DISCOVERED WHICH IN TURN BECAME SQUARES AND PUBLIC USE SPACES. OPEN SPACES BREATH LIFE INTO THE CITY CENTER. THE FUSION OF OPEN BUILT PARK SPACES WITH INTERCONNECTIVITY OF THE HIGH LANE GREEN BELT SYSTEM HELPS IN DECONFINING THE TARGET AREA BY ELEVATING THE ZONES.

HIGH LANE CONNECTIVITY SYSTEM THIS NETWORK OF PUBLIC WALKWAYS OPENS A NEW FORUM OF ACTIVITY ACROSS DIFFERENT LEVELS. THE HIGH LANE CONNECTIVITY SYSTEM MAKES COMMUTING FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER WALKABLE. MORE THAN THE TIME SAVED, THIS ALSO BECOMES A GREEN HUB, FREE OF POLLUTION IN THE HEART OF THE BANGALORE CITY.

MUSEUEM AND LET THY FEET ,MILLENNIUM HENCE BE SET IN THE MIDST OF KNOWLEDGE. THE IDEA BEHIND THE MUSEUM IS TO FUEL CREATIVITY ,IGNITE MINDS AND PROVIDE INSPIRATION. IT STANDS AS A SYMBOL THROUGH TIME AND INTERACTS WITH THE PASSING AGES OF TIME AT VARIOUS LEVELS . IT IS AN EDUCATIONAL BANK FOR ALL AGES AND HELPS THE OBSERVER REALIZE THE VARIOUS ASPECT OF LIFE THAT THE PREVIOUS GENERATIONS HAVE LIVED THROUGH . THE PRIMARY FUNCTIONS : • INCORPORATE TRAFFIC/ CIRCULATION PATTERNS, EXHIBIT SEQUENCE PATTERNS AND PREEXISTING FRAMEWORK PATTERNS. • FILTER CONTENT SO VISITORS ARE NOT BOMBARDED WITH INFORMATION OVERLOAD. • USE STORYTELLING TECHNIQUES TO ENGAGE VISITORS. • GIVE VISITORS A “FUN” EXPERIENCE BY TAPPING INTO THEIR EMOTION. • TECHNOLOGY SHOULD ENHANCE VISITOR’S EXPERIENCE, NOT DISTRACT THEM FROM IT. • LOCAL TALENT WILL BE GIVEN IMPORTANCE BY PROVIDING A STAGE TO SHOWCASE THEIR WORKS .

ARCHITECTURE THESIS

“THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE IS TO DESIGN FOR IT”

THESIS - NIO THE SITE A BRIEF HISTORY

ARABIAN SEA

WESTERN COAST OF INDIA MURUD

THE SITE

THE FORT WAS NOT ONLY A PART OF SINDHUDURG’S DEFENSES BUT WAS ALSO SHIVAJI MAHARAJ’S MAIN SHIP CONSTRUCTION YARD. IT WAS UNDER THE CONTROL OF DAULAT KHAN WHO WAS GIVEN THE TASK TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE NEARBY FORTS . ALTHOUGH THIS FORT WAS LEFT INCOMPLETE DUE TO THE THE WARS ON MAINLAND AND DAUNT KHAN ABANDONING HIS POST TO SUPPORT THE WARRIORS ON LAND , THE FORT STILL REMAINS. AFTER WHICH THE FORT CAME UNDER THE SINDHI RULE AND LATER WAS HANDED OVER THE EAST INDIA COMPANY TO COMMAND OVER THE WESTERN SEA COAST OF INDIA . THE FORT HAS ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES FROM ALL THE RULING PARTIES AND THUS IS A MONUMENT THAT NEEDS TO BE CONSERVED AND RESTORED BUT CURRENTLY IS IN A VERY BAD STATE .ITS RICH HISTORY WILL BE ENGULFED BY THE OCEAN AND LOST FOREVER IF CERTAIN ACTIONS AREN’T TAKEN IMMEDIATELY.

CLIMATE : TEMPERATURE:81°F (27°C), WIND :W AT 9 MPH (14 KM/H), HUMIDITY: 78%

THE FORT IS AN ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL AND HENCE NEEDS TO BE CONSERVED.THE ISLAND CONSISTS PARTLY OF A COMPETED CITADEL WITH A TEMPLE RUIN AND A FEW RUINS OF THE BRITISH BARRACKS . THE SITE ALSO CONSISTS OF A WATER STORAGE TANK .

HOTEST MONTH : MARCH-MAY COLDEST MONTH: NOVEMBERDECEMBER AVG RAINFALL : 3884MM THE WHITE INDICATES THE MAJOR ROAD SYSTEMS THAT CONECT VARIOUS PARTS OF MURUD

TEMPLE HOSPITAL HELIPAD

THE SITE IS SITUATED ALONG THE WESTERN COAST OF INDIA OFF THE COAST OF MURUD . MURUD IS A TALUKA CITY AND A MUNICIPAL COUNCIL IN RAIGAD DISTRICT IN THE INDIAN STATE OF MAHARASHTRA. SITUATED AT A DISTANCE OF 42 KM (26 MI) FROM ALIBAG, MURUD IS A TOURIST DESTINATION. PADMADURG IS ONE OF THE SEA FORTS BUILT BY MARATHA KINGS IN 1676 IN ORDER TO CONTROL THE ACTIVITIES IN ARABIAN SEA.IT IS LOCATED IN THE NORTHWEST DIRECTION OF THE JANJIRA FORT AT A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 10 KM. THE FORT WAS BUILT BY THE MARATHAS TO CHALLENGE THE SINDHI FORT “JANJIRA” ON THE ORDERS GIVEN BY SHIVAJI MAHARAJA .MURUD JANJIRA IS A NOTABLE ATTRACTION OF MURUD WHICH IS FAMOUS FOR BEING THE ONLY FORT ALONG INDIA’S WESTERN COAST THAT REMAINED UNDEFEATED DESPITE DUTCH AND ENGLISH EAST INDIA COMPANY ATTACKS.

THE FORT ALSO HAS 6 BASTIONS AND SEVERAL ARCHEOLOGICAL MARVELS SUCH HAS ABANDONED CANNONS AND CANNON BALLS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THE RICH HISTORY OF THE FORT . SEVERAL STORAGE SPACES CAN ALSO BE FOUND WITHIN THE FORT .

CHATRAPATI SHIVAJI MAHARAJ

AMPHOBIOUS INSECTS WERE STUDIED TO UNDERSATND THE ERGONOMICS OF A THE INSECTS ADAPTIVE PROPERTIES

THESIS BRIEF THE THESIS WILL GIVE IMPORTANCE TO THE RISING THREAT OF WATER LEVELS AROUND THE WESTERN COAST OF INDIA AND HOW WE COULD DESIGN FOR THE FUTURE TO ADAPT TO THESE CLIMATIC AND TOPOGRAPHICAL CHANGES .IT WILL ALSO FOCUS ON REJUVENATING OLD ABANDONED SPACES AND FINDING A HARMONIOUS BALANCE BETWEEN THE OLD AND THE NEW .

CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES

THE DESIGN WILL HAVE TO ADAPT TO LAND AND WATER AND HENCE WILL BE AN AMPHIBIOUS STRUCTURE .THE DESIGN WILL ALSO HELP IMPROVE THE NEGLECTED PADMADURG FORT ALSO KNOWS AS KASA FORT WHICH IS NAMED AFTER THE KASA ROCK ON WHICH IT IS BUILT UPON

THE PROJECT WILL SUPPORT THE STATEMENT MADE ABOVE AS AND WHEN THE WATER LEVEL WILL RISE,MUCH OF THE SETTLEMENT AROUND THE WORLD WILL BE UNDERWATER . (EG, VENICE , MUMBAI , ANDAMAN AND NCIOBAR , BANGLADESH , NETHERLANDS , SHANGHAI ETC ) ALL THESES PLACES ARE MAJOR HUBS AND HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF POPULATION LIVING NEXT TO THE COAST . AS THE SEA LEVEL WILL RISE , THESE PEOPLE WILL BE DISPLACED FROM THEIR HOMES AS THE SPACE WILL BECOME UNINHABITABLE.THE KEY TO A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR HUMANITY CAN BE FOUND IN A HEALTHY BALANCE BETWEEN THE USE OF LAND AND WATER FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FOOD, ENERGY, WATER AND SHELTER. 1.THE IDEA IS TO GO BEYOND THE WATERFRONT AS IT OFFERS ENORMOUS FLEXIBILITY TO US.THE PROJECT WILL HELP ENHANCE THE UNDERSTANDING OF CONSTRUCTION ON WATER .IT WILL ALSO FOCUS ON RENEWABLE RESOURCES AND SUSTAINABILITY ON VARIOUS LEVELS. 2.THE GOAL IN THIS THESIS IS TO DESIGN SCARLESS DEVELOPMENTS, BY WHICH BOTH DURING AS WELL AS AFTER THE LIFESPAN OF THE FUNCTIONS, THE BUILDING LEAVES NEITHER A PHYSICAL FOOTPRINT NOR CARBON FOOTPRINT. 3.UNDERSTANDING HISTORY AND REJUVENATING NEGLECTED SPACES OF TIME. 4.UNDERSTAND THE DYNAMIC OF DESIGNING WITH A PREEXISTING STRUCTURE . 5.RESEARCH VARIOUS OTHER MEANS OF CONSTRUCTION ON WATER . 6.EXPAND THE HORIZON ON WHICH PEOPLE INTERACT WITH THERE HISTORICAL MONUMENTS. 7.OCEANOGRAPHY .

FORT

NIO

WITH A CONSTRUCTED FORT PRE EXISITING THE CONSERVATION OF ITS RICH HERTIAGE WAS A MAJOR PART OF THIS DESIGN . HENCE THE BUILT VS OPEN HELPS US UNDERSTAND THAT OPEN SPACES WERE GIVEN PREFERENCES SO THAT THE BUILDING CAN ADAPT TO CHANGING TIDES. THE BUILDING HAS 6 ACCESS POINTS 3 ACCESS POINTS ARE VIA THE FORT THE ACCESS WAYS ARE MAPPED ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF IN FLOW OF PEOPLE USING THE FACILITY BASED ON THEIR NEEDS. THE ACCESS WAYS ARE ALSO BASED ON THE ZONING OF THE SITE AND BUILDING .

1 ACCESS POINT IS THROUGH THE DIVE CENTERE WHICH ALSO ACTS LIKE A SERVICE ENTRY.

THE DIFFERENT COLOR INDICATE THE SPACES THAT ARE. PUBLIC -TOURIST SEMI PRIVIATE - SCHOLARS/STUDENTS PRIVATE- SCIENTISTS

2 MAIN ACCESS POINTS ARE THROUGH THE MAIN BUILDING . 1- ACCESS POINT DIVERTS THROUGH THE PIER AND ENTERS THE TIME OFFICE SPACES FOR THE WORKING STAFF.

THE SITE CONTOURS WERE GIVEN PREFERENCE WHEN LOCATING THE ACCESS ROUTES. THE BUILDING ALSO HAS TO ADAPT TO THE CLIMATIC CHANGES AND HENCE THE SITE IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE PROJECT AS IT FLOODS TWICE DAILY DURING HIGH TIDE.

ACCESS ROUTES IN AND AROUND THE FORT THE KASA ISLAND

THE BUILDING WILL ADAPT TO THESE CHANGING CONDITIONS BY RISING WITH THE TIDE AS IN WHEN IT FLOODS. THE BUILDING RISE AND FALL WILL CHANNEL THE WATER THROUGHT THE TURBINES LOCATED UNDER THE FOUNDATION TO POWER THE STRUCTURE WITH RENEWABLE TIDAL ENERGY.

THE MAIN BUILDINGS CONSISTS OF THE FORT THE LIBRARY THE RESEARCH CENTRE DIVE CENTRE THE DIVE CENTRE COMPRISES OF A MEETING ROOM , ALONG WITH LOCKER ROOMS, TOILETS AND EQUIPMENT STORAGE. THE TOILETS HERE BEING DIRECTLY ADJACENT TO THE SEA, ARE RAISED, THUS NOT GETTING AFFECTED BY THE RISE OR FALL IN THE TIDAL MOVEMENTS. THE LIBRARY IS DESIGNED TO BE SIMPLE AND EFFECIENT. BEING AN OPEN TO PUBLIC PART OF THE BUILDING, IT WAS NECCESSARY THE CIRCULATION AND MOVEMENT WITHIN THE SPACE BE KEPT SIMPLE. THE TOILETS ARE DESIGNED SIMILAR TO THAT OF THE DIVE CENTRES KEEPING THE TIDAL MOVEMENT IN MIND. THE LIBRARY IS BUILT ON A PRE-EXISTING WATER STORAGE UNIT, WHICH HAS BEEN CONSERVED AND KEPT AS IT, THUS ADDING A WATER FEATURE TO THE READING SPACE.

TURBINE PLACEMENT

OCEAN TIDE TURBINES SCIENTISTS FROM OKINAWA INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY GRADUATE UNIVERSITY (OIST) ARE DESIGNING A TIDAL TURBINE . AN OCEAN-CURRENT TURBINE IS ANCHORED TO SEABED WITH A LINE AND FLOATS IN THE CURRENT WHILE WATER ROTATES ITS THREE BLADES. RESULTS CONFIRMED THE ROBUSTNESS AND STABILITY OF THE TURBINE CONSTRUCTION, AND THE ACHIEVED EFFICIENCY IS COMPARABLE TO THAT OF COMMERCIAL WIND TURBINES, ACCORDING TO OIST. THE TURBINE DESIGN CAN BE SCALED UP OR DOWN, DEPENDING ON LOCAL CONDITIONS AND NEEDS, AND IS ESPECIALLY SUITABLE FOR REGIONS REGULARLY DEVASTATED BY STORMS AND TYPHOONS. THE EXPECTED OUTPUT IS ABOUT 1 GW, CAPABLE OF POWERING OVER 400,000 HOMES.

THE CIRCLED AREAS ARE WORKING SPACES AND ALL THE WORKIN SPACES ARE CONNECTED WITH AN OPEN SPACE THAT HELPS THE USER INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER, THESE SPACES HELP THE USERS GROW AS A COMMUNITY. THE ENCIRCLED SPACES ARE AREAS SPECIFIC FOR LABRAOTY BIOLOGY – MARINE BIOTECH, RADIO ISOTOPE LAB, ALGAL BIOFUEL LAB, MICROBIOLOGY LAB, AQUA GEOMICRO BIOLOGY LAB, MICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY LAB, AQUACULTURE MICROBIOLOGY LAB, AQUACULTURE LAB. CHEMISTRY – WET LAB, NMR LAB, LC-MS/ MS LAB, DRY LAB, CLEAN LAB, TOC LAB, AAS LAB, WET LAB, AUTO ANALYSER LAB, CO2 MEASUREMENT LAB. GEOLOGY – IRMS LAB, ICP LAB,SEDIMENT FLUX LAB, SAMPLE PROCESSING LAB, PLACER MINERAL ANALYSIS LAB, GAS HYDRATE LAB, MICROPALEONTOLOGY LAB, SEDIMENTOLOGY LAB, ION CHROMATOGRAPHY LAB, RIDGE CHEMISTRY LAB, MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY LAB,GEOPHYSICS LAB, EXTRACTION LAB, GAS HYDRATE SEDIMENTOLOGY LAB, FORAMINIFERA CULTURE LAB, PALEOCEANOGRAPHY LAB, XRD LAB. PHYSICS –REMOTE SENSING LABUPPER AIR MONITORING LAB.

THE RAMP EXTENDS AS THE BUILDING RISES AND FALL WIT THE TIDE .

GREEN WALLS LIVING WALLS OR GREEN WALLS ARE SELF SUFFICIENT VERTICAL GARDENS THAT ARE ATTACHED TO THE EXTERIOR OR INTERIOR OF A BUILDING. THEY DIFFER FROM GREEN FAÇADES (E.G. IVY WALLS) IN THAT THE PLANTS ROOT IN A STRUCTURAL SUPPORT WHICH IS FASTENED TO THE WALL ITSELF. THE PLANTS RECEIVE WATER AND NUTRIENTS FROM WITHIN THE VERTICAL SUPPORT INSTEAD OF FROM THE GROUND. THEY ARE OFTEN CONSTRUCTED OF MODULAR PANELS THAT HOLD A GROWING MEDIUM AND CAN BE CATEGORIZED ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF GROWTH MEDIA USED: LOOSE MEDIA, MAT MEDIA, AND STRUCTURAL MEDIA. LOOSE MEDIUM WALLS TEND TO BE “SOIL-ON-A-SHELF” OR “SOIL-IN-A-BAG” TYPE SYSTEMS. MAT TYPE SYSTEMS TEND TO BE EITHER COIR FIBER OR FELT MATS. MAT MEDIA ARE QUITE THIN, EVEN IN MULTIPLE LAYERSAND AS SUCH CANNOT SUPPORT VIBRANT ROOT SYSTEMS OF MATURE PLANTS FOR MORE THAN THREE TO FIVE YEARS BEFORE THE ROOTS OVERTAKE THE MAT AND WATER IS NOT ABLE TO ADEQUATELY WICK THROUGH THE MATS.STRUCTURAL MEDIA ARE GROWTH MEDIUM “BLOCKS” THAT ARE NOT LOOSE, NOR MATS, BUT WHICH INCORPORATE THE BEST FEATURES OF BOTH INTO A BLOCK THAT CAN BE MANUFACTURED INTO VARIOUS SIZES, SHAPES AND THICKNESSES.

EPS FOUNDATION

CLEAN WATER DRAINS FROM THE PLANTS TO THE FISH

PLANTS AND MICROBES BREAK DOWN THE NUTRIENTS FROM THE FISH WASTE

AQUAPONICS

FISH EAT AND PRODUCE THE NUTRIENT RICH WASTE

THE FOAM, EPS, THAT IS USEDD IN THIS KIND OF CONSTRUCTION IS SUPPORTED BY WATER; WHICH MAKES IT VIRTUALLY UNSINKABLE. EPS CONSISTS OF A VARIETY OF “PEARLS” OR A CLOSED CELL STRUCTURE, WHICH CONSIST OF APPROXIMATELY 98% AIR; THIS ACCOUNTS FOR THE BUOYANCY. TESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT FULLY SUBMERGED EPS ONLY ABSORBS ABOUT 7% WATER. BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL DEGRADATION DUE TO CHEMICALS AND INSECTS; THE FOAM IS COVERED WITH CONCRETE AND POLYUREA. THIS HELPS TO REINFORCE THE STRUCTURE OF THE HOME. EPS IS EXTREMELY EASY TO DESIGN SINCE IT IS BUILT DIRECTLY ON THE SURFACE OF THE WATER; THEREFORE THE ONLY CONSTRAINT ON THE SIZE OF A FLOATING STRUCTURE IS THE FORMATION OF THE CONCRETE. THE LARGER THE FLOATING

NUTRITION RICH WATER IS PUMPED TO THE PLANTS AQUAPONICS AQUAPONICS IS A SYSTEM THAT COMBINES CONVENTIONAL AQUACULTURE (RAISING AQUATIC ANIMALS SUCH AS SNAILS, FISH, CRAYFISH OR PRAWNS IN TANKS) WITH HYDROPONICS (CULTIVATING PLANTS IN WATER) IN A SYMBIOTIC ENVIRONMENT. IN NORMAL AQUACULTURE, EXCRETIONS FROM THE ANIMALS BEING RAISED CAN ACCUMULATE IN THE WATER, INCREASING TOXICITY. IN AN AQUAPONIC SYSTEM, WATER FROM AN AQUACULTURE SYSTEM IS FED TO A HYDROPONIC SYSTEM WHERE THE BY-PRODUCTS ARE BROKEN DOWN BY NITRIFYING BACTERIA INTO NITRATES AND NITRITES, WHICH ARE UTILIZED BY THE PLANTS AS NUTRIENTS, AND THE WATER IS THEN RECIRCULATED BACK TO THE AQUACULTURE SYSTEM.

THE LEVELS OF THE BUILDING CAN MOVE UP AND DOWN AS THEY ARE ATTACHED TO COLUMN THAT CENTRALLY NAVIGATES THE BUILINGS RISE AND FALL BASED ON THE TIDE
