PUBLISHER’s note

Hello! As a publisher in the Gulf for more than two decades I have always wanted to see a magazine that talks about cinema globally. Although there are many magazines in the market that focus on a single region or topic, there was a vacum for one that spoke globally. The Gulf is truly a melting pot of cultures with almost all nationalities present, so it made all the more sense to have this magazine published. With Global Cinema this dream has turned into a reality. We plan to feature cinema from across the globe. We will bring the world of cinema in your hands. Cinema and entertainment has always been close to my heart and we will bring you more magazines related to the same topic. We plan to publish titles catering to our niche target audience and we will soon be venturing into new regions such as Korea, Hong Kong, Kenya, USA, Malaysia and China as well with future publications. As a publisher my vision is to make our company a progressive media house, profitable and with successful diversification in identified businesses. Keeping in mind that today technology plays an important role in our lives we will keep you updated through our website and App. We look forward to all your support, love and wishes to make this journey a memorable one. Perry’s first public show after split from Bloom USA: Singer Katy Perry made her first public appearance following her split from actor Orlando Bloom. She was attending the 2017 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Perry flaunted a strapless jumpsuit at the red carpet of the awards gala here on Sunday and couldn’t stop smiling while posing for photographers, reports aceshowbiz.com. Perry had time to chat with radio host Elvis Duran on the red carpet. After he talked about her new look, Perry said: “Well yeah, if you’re going this extreme it should, hello! I’m trying to get more attention, obviously. You can just grow it back. “Honestly, I tried to take my full head of hair platinum and I had a lot of breakage. I’ve always wanted to look like Miley Cyrus. I’ve always wanted to have that pixie haircut, so I said, ‘Let’s just go for it.’” She added: “I feel like there’s a new wave, a new authentic vibe coming in and I think this matches. I want to redefine what it means to be feminine. “Look at Scarlett Johansson, who’s one of the most beautiful women in the world. We have the same haircut and I saw her at an Oscars party and was like, ‘I’m doing it.’ You’re hot, you can be hot and look great with this kind of hair. Why not?”

Martin Scorseseled Film Foundation turns focus to African movies I was overweight, very shy: Viola Davis USA: “Fences” star Viola Davis, who won an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actress category, says it was only last year that she began to feel fully confident in her skin. “My confidence took time. It really did, to come into myself,” people.com quoted the 51-year-old as saying. She added: “At first, I just wanted to try really hard to make people see that I was pretty, that I wasn’t just the drug addict from (the 2002 drama) Antoine Fisher, so it was about proving something to someone.” She said: “I was one of those people that everyone knew, but I didn’t have a lot of friends. I didn’t date or do any of that stuff. I was overweight and very, very shy.” Davis, who grew up in extreme poverty, added that she was “definitely not a snazzy dresser” and “definitely didn’t wear make-up”. USA: The Film Foundation, a movierestoration organisation founded and chaired by Oscar winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese, has partnered with the Pan African Federation of Filmmakers (FEPACI) and Unesco in a project to locate, restore and preserve films made on the African continent. Dubbed the African Film Heritage Project, the group will identify 50 films with historic, artistic and cultural significance, and then work to restore them, reports deadline.com. It’s the latest film genre for the Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project. According to deadline.com, in this case, in association with its partner Cineteca di Bologna and Unesco, it will support the investigation, location and restoration of an initial selection of 50 films as identified by FEPACI’s advisory board made up of archivists, scholars and filmmakers active across the African continent. A survey to locate the best existing film elements for each title will be conducted in African cinémathèques and film archives worldwide.

“There are so many films in need of restoration from all over the world. We created the World Cinema Project to ensure that the most vulnerable titles don’t disappear forever,” Scorsese said. He added: “Over the past 10 years, the WCP has helped to restore films from Egypt, India, Cuba, the Philippines, Brazil, Armenia, Turkey, Senegal and many other countries. Along the way, we’ve come to understand the urgent need to locate and preserve African films title by title in order to ensure that new generations of filmgoers African filmgoers in particular - can actually see these works and appreciate them.”

‘Kong: Skull Island’ was physically taxing: Brie Larson USA: Oscar winning actress Brie Larson

“There’s a lot of movement in this film. So, it was really physically taxing in a way I’ve never experienced before. I had never gotten to that point where I’m really pushing myself to the limit, and it’s amazing what your body can do. It’s fun,” Larson said in a statement.

says shooting for her forthcoming film “Kong: Skull Island” was physically taxing in a way that she has “never experienced before”. The film, backed by Warner Bros, is set in the early 1970s, and is a reboot of the King Kong franchise. The film is slated to release on March 10.

Larson plays the role of a photo-journalist in the film, which is all about tracing and capturing a giant monstrous ape named Kong. Larson says she had a trainer to help her for her role. She said: “I had done that before when I did ‘Room’, but it was a different kind of training. For ‘Room’, it was about trying to get myself wiry and small, and for ‘Kong: Skull Island’, it was about bulking up. You sit differently in your body when you have that type of strength.”

Actors Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra are thrilled with the new additions to the family of Karan, who launched their acting career in 2012 with his directorial “Student of the Year”. “Finally, I can say I have a younger brother and sister! So happy. So much love to give. Bursting with joy,” Alia tweeted. Sidharth also wrote: “So happy you took this decision Karan! It’s a full house now. You will be an amazing father, love to your new big family.”

Bollywood rejoices as Karan Johar takes surrogacy route for fatherhood India: Bollywood’s celebrated filmmaker Karan Johar on Sunday announced he feels “enormously blessed” to have become a father to twins via surrogacy. Celebrities like actress Priyanka Chopra and choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan congratulated him on the “happy” news. The daughter has been named Roohi -- a rearrangement of Karan’s mother’s name Hiroo, and the son has been christened Yash -- after Karan’s late father. Karan, 44, said: “I am ecstatic to share with you all the two most wonderful additions to my life, my children and lifelines: Roohi and Yash. I feel enormously blessed to be a parent to these pieces of my heart who were welcomed into this world with the help of the marvels of medical science.” He says parenthood is “an emotional yet well thought out decision” he has taken after considering all the responsibilities and duties that come with being one. “In order to arrive at this decision, I have prepared myself mentally, physically, emotionally and logistically to ensure that my children get all the unconditional

love, care and attention from me and mine. I have submitted to the fact that my children are my world and priority.” In his book “An Unsuitable Boy”, Karan not just opened up about his sexuality -- albeit in a veiled manner -- but also expressed a desire to adopt a child or opt for surrogacy. The filmmaker, who keeps travelling around the world and is known for his knack of making romantic dramas, understands that having children would mean that “work, travels and social commitments would have to take a back seat”. Karan also extended gratefulness to the surrogate who fulfilled his “lifelong dream and provided a warm, loving and nurturing environment to my children before bringing them into this world. She will always remain in my prayers.” Karan also extended gratitude to IVF specialist Jatin Shah, who was also instrumental in the successful birth of superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri’s son AbRam through surrogacy.

Varun said: “Karan, you are the best human being I know and I’m sure you will make the best dad.” Congratulating the new father, actress Priyanka Chopra wrote: “So happy for you. May Yash and Roohi always have a beautiful healthy life. Much love always.” Farah, who has triplets with husband Shirish Kunder through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), is glad Karan finally took her advice seriously. “Best thing to happen to you and they’ll be the youngest people you hang out with, so all’s good,” said Farah, who had children at the age of 43. While National Award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta welcomed Karan to fatherhood, actor Tusshar Kapoor, who became a single parent to Laksshaya Kapoor via surrogacy in 2016, said Karan deserved “these little blessings”. Actress Preity Zinta tweeted: “So happy for you and Hiroo aunty. I’m sure Yash and Roohi will bring light and happiness to your lives”. Director Sujoy Ghosh loved the names of the little ones and said: “As one tagline once said ‘It’s all about loving your parents’.” Actress Sonakshi Sinha believes Karan will be the “best daddy and spoil them silly”.

everything goes well and we manage to pull it off, it’s going to be a very big film. The pre-production process of the film is going to be unlike any Malayalam film in terms of the amount of detailing required in the production,” he said. “We know the actual shooting will take shorter time than what was spent on the pre-production. However, I’m still not sure when we plan to commence filming,” he added. Prithviraj currently awaits the release of “Tiyaan”, “Adam Joan” and “My Story”.

Malayalam film industry not congested: Prithviraj India: Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran believes there is no competition between the lead actors in Malayalam filmdom because the industry is not congested and that allows actors to do the kind of films they believe in. Considered one of the leading stars of Malayalam industry, Prithviraj doesn’t compete with the current crop of stars such as Fahadh Faasil, Dulquer Salmaan and Nivin Pauly because he is considered a “mature actor”. “Although we are all pretty much in the same age bracket, my screen image and the amount of time I’ve spent on acting have translated to people perceiving me as a more mature actor. Therefore, I get characters that traverse big time span,” Prithviraj told IANS here. Having made his acting debut with the 2002 Malayalam film “Nandanam”, the “Mumbai Police” actor is on the verge of completing 100 films. He said: “I don’t think the industry is congested enough for us to compete. We make about 100 films a year and we have only spoken about four to five actors who

I also don’t see anybody as competition because the kind of films I do are very different.” With over half a dozen projects in his kitty, Prithviraj is looking forward to “Detroit Crossing” and the highly anticipated historic drama “Karnan”. “Detroit Crossing”, to be helmed by Nirmal Sahadev, will be the second crossover film in the actor’s career. “It’s something I have wanted to do for a very long time. On the international stage, there aren’t many stories being told about our people. ‘Detroit Crossing’ is happening because I said yes to it. Had they done it as a small and independent parallel cinema, it might have been a good film, but it wouldn’t have found the kind of money it has found now,” he explained. To be completely shot in the US, the film will throw the spotlight on Tamil street fights in Michigan and Detroit. Talking about “Karnan”, he said he isn’t sure when they will go on floors. “If

I don’t believe in censorship: Sonam Kapoor India: Actress Sonam Kapoor says that she doesn’t believe in censorship and that everyone should have his or her own choice of outfit or sexuality or marriage. Speaking about restrictions on women’s fashion choices in the Indian society, Sonam said: “I don’t believe in censorship. Pakistan lifts ban on Bollywood films PAKISTAN: In October 2016, at the height of tensions between India and Pakistan, The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) called for a ban on Pakistani artistes working in Bollywood. Actors like Fawad Khan and others had to return to Pakistan. In retaliation The Film Exhibitors Association of Pakistan, along with Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, had imposed a ban on the screening of all Indian movies and TV channels and general Indian entertainment programmers that were aired in Pakistan. But due to this ban theatres across Pakistan faced severe losses as there were not many Pakistani films to screen. Similar was the case with TV channels and entertainment. Pakistan does not have a huge film or TV industry and doesn’t churn our movies every Friday as compared to Indian Film Industry. The ban was lifted by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 26th January 2017. On Sunday, Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said in a statement that the government has decided to maintain the present policy regarding import of Indian films. She said, ‘The decision has been taken after reviewing the benefits Pakistani cinema trade can derive from exhibition of Indian films and to develop,

Adapted from a novel by prominent journalist Ibrahim Eissa, “Mawlana” (The Preacher) tells the story of a popular television preacher who struggles to reconcile his religious principles with demands and pressures from politicians and security agencies as well as ordinary human temptations. Through the protagonist, an imam from Al-Azhar, Cairo’s 1,000-year-old center of Islamic learning, the film lays bare the complex and troubling interplay between the state, religious establishment, mass media and extremism in Egypt. Clerics at Al-Azhar have responded angrily to the film, which they say tarnishes the image of the establishment just as it steps up efforts to rein in violent extremism. “The film came out at a bad time. This is a time when people are asking to renew religious discourse and improve Azhar’s image. The film coming out now is very wrong. Even its title is problematic,” said Sameh Mohamed, a preacher at AlAzhar. Mohamed said the film, in which the televangelist initially bends to the demands of senior officials before having a change of heart, paints clerics as unprincipled and state-controlled.

The fast,

furious and funny By Rinky Kumar

H

e is revered across the world for his lightning fists and innocent grin. On celluloid, Jackie Chan is often seen as an underdog who fights the baddies, wins over his lady love with his sweet gestures and is a hit with kids. It’s no surprise that this actor, martial artist, producer, director and stunt performer’s meteoric rise to stardom from the humble lanes of Hong Kong is quite similar to his onscreen persona. Packing the right punch Chan was born as Chan Hong-San in 1954 in Hong Kong. While his father worked as a cook at the French Embassy, his mother was a cleaner at the same place. In the early 60s, his family moved to Canberra. As young Chan wasn’t too academically inclined, his father sent him back to Hong Kong where he enrolled himself in the China Drama Academy and excelled at acrobatics, singing and martial arts. He would often travel to Canberra to visit his parents but finally decided to settle down in Hong Kong. After minuscule roles as a child artiste in a few films, he got his first big break in– The Chinese Connection aka Fist of Fury (1972) and then, Enter the Dragon (1973), both of which featured martial arts superstar Bruce Lee. Due to financial constraints, Chan started doing dangerous stunts for less than a pound a day. However, a sudden lull in Hong Kong cinema, prompted him to move back to Canberra with his parents where he attended college and also worked at a construction site. Interestingly, it was at this

place that he got his screen name ‘Jackie’. A fellow builder by the name of Jack took young Chan under his wings. The young boy came to be known as Little Jack which was later shortened to Jackie and that name has stuck with him ever since. However, the love for cinema motivated him to come back to Hong Kong after a few years and he appeared in a spate of low-budget martial arts films namely Shaolin Wooden Men (1976), Jian hua yan yu jiang nan (1977) (aka To Kill With Intrigue), Yi zhao ban shi chuang jiang hu (1978) (aka Half A Loaf of Kung Fu) and Fei du juan yun shan (1978) (aka Magnificent Bodyguards), which fared reasonably well at the cinemas. However, his major breakthrough came when he starred in Drunken Master (1978). Lee’s demise in 1973 had left a void in the martial arts genre and Chan was seen as the next legend. His comic timing, nifty moves and boy-next-door-charm worked well in his favour and he soon became a star. Chan decided to don the director’s hat with The Young Master (1980). His success in the Orient inspired him to foray into Hollywood. But as the movies -- Battle Creek Brawl and The Cannonball Run didn’t do justice to his martial arts avatar, he decided to return to the Orient. Along with ample support from his stunt team, Chan went on to star in some of the biggest hits like Winners & Sinners (1983), Project A (1983), Wheels on Meals (1984), My Lucky Stars (1985), My Lucky Stars 2: Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars (1985) and continued his success streak with The Protector (1985), Police Story and Armour of God (1986).

I never wanted to be the next Bruce Lee. I just wanted to be the first Jackie Chan. Hollywood with Rumble in the Bronx (1995) and continued it with Rush Hour (1998) series, Around the World in 80 Days (2004), The Tuxedo (2002), The Spy Next Door (2010), and The Karate Kid (2010). He also lent his voice for the animated film, Kung-Fu Panda (2008). However, his journey in the US has been quite different as he has traditionally taken up supporting roles vis a vis his roles in the East where he has successfully donned the mantle of actor/

director/producer and writer. One might presume that all his films are laced with violence but the 62-year-old clarifies that it is action mixed with dollops of comedy. He once mentioned in an interview, “When I direct, the film is like my baby. I have to make sure there is comedy but no dirty comedy, and a positive message. I like people to believe the stunts are real – it’s not like Spider-Man or Iron Man where a 20-minute scene can be pure CGI. I only use a tiny bit of special effects. I want it to be believable, so where I used to do a triple kick, I now just do one. Eventually there will be no kicks. There has to be plenty of action, but not violence. I love action, but I hate violence. There is so much violence in the world, from video games and from other movies. I want my movies to have a message of peace.” Over the last decade, the actor has deliberately moved away from his trademark action movies and steered towards more characterdriven roles like the ones in Shinjuku Incident (2009), 1911 (2011), CZ12 (2012), Police Story 2013 (2013), Dragon Blade (2015), Skiptrace (2016)and the recently-released Kung Fu Yoga. He elaborated in an interview, “When I was in The Young Master and Rumble in the Bronx, I didn’t get into the characters. All I had in mind was the fighting techniques, how to choreograph the action sequences and how to do the dangerous stunts. Back then I got hurt and the viewers applauded. Now, the audiences are different. They know that I did the stunts before and they have already recognised me for that. So today, I put more effort into acting. I would like people to consider me as an actor who can do action, not just as an action star. I look forward to trying more dramatic roles.” A philanthropist par excellence Off screen, Chan has been involved in many philanthropic ventures providing financial assistance to schools and universities around the world. A UNICEF GoodWill ambassador, he has campaigned against animal abuse, pollution, supported wildlife charities and educational projects in China. “You have no idea how poor some of the places in China are until you see them. I wish I had more learning. When I was a kid I wanted to be a lawyer or an engineer or a doctor. You wish for your children what you didn’t have yourself, so I thought that’s what my son Jaycee would do. But he went into entertainment! He told my wife (Lin Feng-jiao) when he was 15, and she wept. ‘Why are you crying,’ I asked. ‘Because I’ve already lost my husband to this profession,’ she said.” In Asia, Chan owns restaurants, theatres, a coffee business, a clothing label and a watch business. Plans are afoot for a Jackie Chan theme park in China, where he will house memorabilia from his career. Aside from being an actor, he is also a prolific singer who has as many as 20 albums to his credit and has also won many accolades. In 1990, he was honoured as the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Minister

I have reasons to do each film, I have something to say. Unlike “Rush Hour” there was no reason in making it, you just give me the money and I’m fine. I dislike “Rush Hour” the most, but ironically it sold really well in the U.S. and Europe. of Culture and Communication. In 2013, he received the New York Asian Film Festival’s Star Asia Lifetime Achievement Award while last year he was one of the four artists to receive an Honorary Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Governors Awards hosted by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Though there have often been rumours that Chan is ready to hang up his boots and focus completely on philanthropy, the actor has dismissed them and said, “Now, I don’t want to be an action star, an action star’s life is so short. I want my life to get longer. I want my career to get longer.” GC

Madampi, Nivedyam, Nottam, Perumahakkalam, Gaurisankaram, etc, Jayachandran has carved a niche for himself in the music industry. His music is distinct and original. An amalgamation of Indian and western classical, the orchestration of his songs is a delight to the ears. His compositions like “Pattil e Pattil”, “Kathirunnu Kathirunnu” etc, always create ripples among music

lovers worldwide. Please share something about your growing up with music and your gurus Both my father and mother were interested in music and they had learnt some music when they were young. My dad was an ardent lover of Carnatic classical music whereas my mother was interested in film and all the lighter forms of music. They both used to sing as well. I remember there were nice musical moments when guests would come home and amma (mom) and acchan (dad) would sing together. As children, I and my chettan (elder brother) 8 yrs elder than me, would curiously look at them and understand the significance of family bonding. The bond grew stronger due to music. All the time there was music…. and dad put me under the guidance of my guru Attingal Harihara Iyer. He was the one who took me into the world of music. He used to teach me the sapthaswaras , the janta varishaas and some varnas too of carnatic music. Later I joined my guru Perumbavoor G Raveendranath... where I learnt for 7 to 8 years. After that I started learning from Neyyatinkara Mohanachandran, a great doyen of carnatic classical music. He knew about 3000 odd krithis. He was a master at singing rare ragas and krithis. I learnt from him for about 19 years. As far as film music is concerned... my first guru was noted music director M B Sreenivasan… and later on I was fortunate to work with one of the greatest composers of Malayalam music..Shri G Devarajan... whom we used to call Devarajan Master. Eventually I got chance to assist my guru Perumbavoor G Raveendranath in his devotional projects and later in his film music projects as well. Why did you choose music as your career despite being an engineering student? Basically we are a family of engineers. My dad’s grandfather went to Mumbai and learnt Electrical engineering. His son… my father’s maternal uncle also followed suit. Later my dad did graduation and post graduation in electrical engineering. My elder brother followed his footsteps and joined the college of electrical engineering. He is now the president of Siemens Malaysia. So looking at the family tradition from childhood there was an unwritten format about me to also become an engineer although I was more into music. However, I had no choice but to join engineering. My parents were aware that I was more interested in music but they wanted me to have the degree of engineering as they thought music as a profession was unpredictable and risky. Mainly in those days nobody would think of music being the only profession. In our family we don’t have any musician... or any person from cinema. So being totally from an engineering background, I almost forced myself to take up engineering. However, when I was studying... my mind / heart /soul was into music… which didn’t allow me to concentrate on engineering. I was going through a lean patch. I would bunk classes and go to music concerts… I would attend recordings of great masters, my gurus... devrajan sir and ravindranath sir. First I studied in TKM Engineering college , Kollum… then final year I was transferred to Trivandrum eng college where I completed my

engineering degree. But eventually my passion (Music) became by profession. You were very close to your mother. Tell us about the importance of your amma in your life. Amma was everything to me. She was like a goddess and guardian angel. I remember she used to take me to the youth festivals when I was just 8 yrs old. She used to sing lot of songs to me like Que Sara Sara… and many Malayalam and Tamil film songs. She was born in Malaysia. Until about 21 years she was in Kuala Lumpur. After that she came to India... met my dad and that’s how their marriage happened. Her focus was only on me. It was her dream that I would grow up to become a great musician one day. She built up the confidence in me and inspired me. Even during times when I went through a dark phase as I wasn’t getting proper opportunities… she would stand by me and told me that there will be a time when everybody would approach me and come to me. She predicted that I shall become a world famous musician one day. I feel whatever I have become are her dreams coming true more than mine… and whatever music I have… that has been given to me by my parents. Both Amma and Acchan have passed away yet I can feel their presence always. Their blessings are always with me and my family.

Indian music has an unparallel heredity of music. We have the carnatic and Hindustani classical streams which are distinct and pristinely beautiful. Despite so much influence of western music in the contemporary music scenario you have always maintained your originality and also retained the Indian classical music. Tell us something about this. I feel Music is a Universal Language. For a musician Religion is also music. But at the same time Indian music has an unparallel heredity of music. We have the carnatic and Hindustani classical streams which are distinct and pristinely beautiful. I always feel Indian film music should retain the Indianness. Cinema itself is a western medium but when it comes to Indian films I feel they should retain the Indianness be in the story… music… theme… the way we see the things... etc . In portrayal of music also I feel the Indianness should be there. We must keep rooted. I am a staunch believer of Indian traditions and values. For the themes which require other genres from other parts of the world… should be taken in consideration the way RD Burman... Illayaraja Sir… A R Rahman have been doing. Cinema music is an amalgamation of

different genres of music but the indianness should be inherent in the music. I believe and hope to stay this way forever without being carried away by trends that people talk about. I have to compose trendy music but always see to it that there is indianness in the trends and not going for just sound of the song. Most of the people go for sounds.. what sound you use.. what samples you use.. what auto tunes you use….what engineering you use. But I think I will keep myself rooted in music… number 1 priority music.. number 2 priority music..and number 3 priority music. So I will stick to it ! You are a soulful composer. Do tell us about your sources of inspiration. My childhood idol as a composer was Madan Mohan ji. Even now.. not a day of mine goes when I don’t put myself in the path of at least one song composed by Madan ji. Even today I heard “Lag jaa gale”. I always regret not being able to meet him. All his compositions inspire me. I also like the compositions of M B Sreenivasan.. Devarajan master.. Illayaraja sir… R D Burman.. S D Burman.. Shankar Jaikishan..Vishal Bharadwaj.. Shankar Ehsan Loy , etc. I am also an ardent follower of western classical music. I look up to mixing up with western harmony in my melodies.. especially in the harmony part or in the orchestration. During the conversation between the song lyrics and orchestra I always use western classical. I am big fan of Michael Jackson.. Mariah Carey… etc. As far as music composers are concerned, my idols have been John Williams and James Horner.

I still can’t believe that I received national award for “Kathirunnu”. I think it as a divine intervention, a gift from god. You are a renowned playback singer as well. Why don’t we hear more of your songs as a playback singer nowadays ? As a child I wanted to become a singer. Later on when I understood the entire system of playback singing I found out that singer has many limitations in terms of creativity specially in films. The reason behind this lies in the fact the whole routine and everything is created by the music director. The singer has to abide as per the limitations. The tune itself is a limitation. If the singer becomes creative and adds anything of his own which strays out of the tune, the music director points out that it is not needed. So the creativity much less is far as singing is concerned. However in a stage concert there is scope for creativity. So I thought I should dwell in creativity so I chose to become composer. Later on I sang a lot of songs composed by myself in films… but I somehow

feel I have limitations as a singer. I feel my sort of singing would suit only some of the genres. Many producers tell me to sing.. but If I feel the songs are not suitable for my voice I always suggest other singers’ names. This way many songs have gone to other singers. However, I still do my classical stage concerts and also conduct a lot of star studded stage concerts in India and abroad. What do you have to say about the Auto tune system in recording that is dominating the music scene in current times ? The very grammar of film making have changed through the years. This is different century. The whole thought process has changed. This change has to be attributed to A R Rahman who brought in a total renaissance in film music. Auto tune is in connection with changing times. Now it is about getting expressions in a song by microscopically going into each and every phrase of the song. There are 4 / 5 takes.... edits…. some auto tune elements are added in to the voice to make it sound different. I am not against this. I cannot ignore the fact that in the current scenario the younger generation always looks for something different and trendy. Auto tune makes a machine like sound to the voice which is more mechanical.. less expressive and less human. So, for expressional songs.. auto tune would be fatal I think.. but for other songs which rely on gimmicks and other technicalities and look up to become smash hits probably with the youth… the trend is of course having auto tuned songs. Personally I am not too fond of auto tune even for pitch correction.. although I have to do it at times. I feel slight imperfections in the pitch will sound human.. that will touch the heart. So auto tune or auto tune type composition is not my forte anyway. However, if there is a requirement in the film and the producer or director asks me to compose a song with auto tuned elements then I do it. What are your views regarding reality shows. Are they beneficial for the new singers ? Talking about reality shows.. my memories go back to my childhood when I was a school student and would go for every youth festival to participate in classical and light music competitions. Many a times I won first prize also at various levels. In those times it was rare that your photo would come in the cover page of any magazine or newspaper even if u won first prize. But see where the reality shows have grown today… with so much exposure of talent. This is the main positive aspect of a reality show. With one performance millions of music lovers get to hear and express the joy over the talent.. by voting via sms’s and messages. So there is instant feedback. Moreover, the participant gets overnight fame due to exposure on television channels. Singers of present generation are very lucky that they get chance to showcase their talent. However, lot of mediocrity is projected somehow in reality shows. Lot of hype is given to mediocre singing performances… and they choose to say that this is the benchmark as well. So in this regard I feel reality shows are bit negative as well. How did you feel when you got the prestigious National Award for your song “Kathirunnu” in

the film Ennu Ninte Moideen. I still can’t believe that I received national award for “Kathirunnu”. I think it as a divine intervention, a gift from god. As far as God is concerned ..it is Krishna for me. Like the sweet music pouring out of the flute of lord Krishna.. the sweet gift has come from him.. the omnipresent Krishna. I have embedded lot of compositional ornaments in the song.. lot of minute musical creations have happened in the song.. Even the mukhda is pretty long because in the film the heroine Kanchanmala is waiting for the hero Moideen for 10 long years.. so it is also symbolic in the mukhda which is very long to depict the waiting. There is an element of sadness in the tune. The depth had to be portrayed with ample expressions and lot of angularity on the notes … including a touch of positivity as the heroine thinks he will come back one day. Rafique Ahmed has written the beautiful lyrics and Shreya ghoshal has done absolute justice to the composition. My heartfelt gratitude to the director and producer who gave me the wonderful opportunity to score music for the film. There is another tinge of sorrow which I think accentuated the depth of the composition. I had lost my father just few days before I composed the song. The grief of his absence was very fresh in my heart and mind while composing the tune. Your recent songs from Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol starring Mohanal have become very big hits as well. Tell us something about the songs. I am a huge admirer of Mohanlal sir since childhood and his family and my family have had very close relationship since a long time. His parents and my parents have been family friends too. The latest film I did with him is Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol which is a superhit in Kerala. I got to score music for two songs.. one is romantic number sung by Vijay Yesudas and Shreya Ghoshal and the other one sung by Jithin Raj is a typical Kerala style peppy song with ethnic melody and rhythm. It has got a lot of nativity plus it is a fusion of different genres. It ends in a dance phrase. I am happy about the songs and the film being a runaway hit already We have come to know that you are writing a book . Tell us about the same. I am writing a book on my experiences with my guru.. one of the greatest music composers that Malayalam film industry has ever produced… G Devarajan.. better known as Devarajan Master. I met him for the first time when I was just an engineering student… I had to go through a very hard grind as he was very meticulous with his work. He was very tough and strict. His discipline left me spell bound. All his recordings would start at 9 am sharp.. and all of us would have to be in studio by 8.30 am… anybody coming after 9 am would not be allowed inside the studio. He had his own style of composing music for Malayalam lyrics .. he said Malayalam is such a language that we should really like it.. love it.. and underline the lyrical passages with some soothing and beautiful music. There are many interesting and memorable experiences that I have shared in the book. The book is scheduled to release after two months. GC

ver the last few decades, filmmakers who have made their mark in world cinema, have forayed into Hollywood and carved a niche for themselves. Here are five such directors with an impressive career trajectory who have delivered some of the biggest box office hits

Alejandro González Iñárritu If Alejandro González Iñárritu would not have been a filmmaker, he would have been a musician. The award-winning director has stated in many interviews that he believes music has had a bigger influence on him as an artiste than cinema. He started out as a radio host at a Mexican radio station that mainly played rock and eclectic music. Within a span of four years, he became the director of the station and interviewed rock stars and transmitted live concerts. When he composed music for six Mexican feature films, he was introduced to the world of cinema and gradually veered towards writing, producing and directing short films, advertisements and tele films. He hit the big league in 1999 when his debut feature film Amores Perros premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to be nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards. He followed it up with 21 Grams, starring Benicio del Toro, Naomi Watts and Sean Penn, and Babel, featuring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The Javier Bardem-starrer Biutiful earned him second

nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. However, the Mexican finally struck gold in 2015 when he won the Academy Award for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) that featured Michael Keaton, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Zach Galifianakis.

My cinema is an extension of myself. A sort of life-testimony of my vital experience, with my few irtues and my numerous limitations. The following year, he again won the Academy Award for Best Director for the Leonado Di Caprio-starrer The Revenant making him the third director to win back-to-back Academy Awards. The former radio jockey-turned-ad filmmaker-turned director is known for creating nuanced characters battling their inner conflicts. The 53year-old has been praised for extracting noteworthy performances from his actors and depicting the eradication of moral values in today’s society through his adept story telling. Alfonso Cuaron From an early age, Alfonso Cuarón Orozco yearned to be either a film director or an astronaut. He decided that filmmaking was his true calling when he received a camera on his 12 birthday. Thereafter, he started filming everything he saw. He would often sneak way from school to watch movies. His dreams hit a roadblock when he was expelled from university after he had co-directed an English short film with two of his friends. He started working in a museum but destiny had other plans for him and he soon got an offer to work as a cable person in a Mexican political drama, La Víspera (1982). Soon, Alfonso started working as an assistant director in several films and television serials. In 1991, he decided that he would direct his first independent venture

Mexican television serials around the same time. The director got his first big break when Cronos (1993) a horror film won several international wards and also bagged the International Critics Week prize at Cannes. Guillermo followed it up with his first Hollywood film, Mimic(1997), starring Mira Sorvino. However, after a few bad experiences in Hollywood, he decided to head back home to Mexico and helmed the immensely successful horror flick The Devil’s Backbone (2001), a Spanish Civil War ghost story.

The only reason you make a movie is not to make or set out to do a good or a bad movie, it’s just to see what you learn for the next one.

The film was hailed by critics and audiences alike, and Guillermo decided to give Hollywood another shot. He struck gold with the second instalment of the Blade franchise starring Wesley Snipes and followed it up with another successful comic-book inspired film, Hellboy (2004) starring Ron Pearlman, the science fiction monster flick Pacific Rim (2013), and the gothic romance movie Crimson Peak (2015).

titledSólo con tu pareja (Love in the time of Hysteria). However, the film ran into trouble with I.M.C.I.N.E. (Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia), which had backed it, but thankfully, the movie was a huge success in various film festivals across the world. After he was invited by Sydney Pollack to direct movies in Hollywood, the filmmaker helmed A Little Princess (1995) which received two Oscar nominations. He followed it up with an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations (1998). In 2004, his Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third film in the Harry Potter series, proved to be the greatest box office success of his career. Two years later, his futuristic film Children of Men (2006) with Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for three Academy Awards. The 55-year-old created history when his space thriller Gravity (2013), starring Sandra Bullock, won as many as seven Academy Awards and he became the first Mexican-born filmmaker to win the Oscar for Best Director. Alfonso’s movies are technically sound and he is known for his deft camera work, digitally blended shots and usage of wide camera angles. Guillermo del Toro Guillermo del Toro developed an interest in filmmaking in his early teens. Later, he learned about makeup and effects from the legendary Dick Smith (The Exorcist (1973) and worked on making his own short films. At the age of 21, he executive produced his first feature, Dona Herlinda and Her Son (1986) and spent almost 10 years as a make-up supervisor. He also produced and directed

When you have the intuition that there is something which is there, but out of the reach of your physical world, art and religion are the only means to get to it. A prolific producer, he has backed hugely acclaimed projects like The Orphanage (2007), Julia’s Eyes(2010), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011), Puss in Boots (2011), and Mama (2013). Guillermo is one of the few versatile filmmakers who has directed movies from varied genres namely dark fantasy pieces, gothic horror movies and superhero projects. The 52-year-old’s movies are known for their poetic and visual beauty and for featuring human beings in extraordinary circumstances. Guillermo, along with fellow Mexican directors Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu are known as the ‘The Three Amigos of Cinema. They are the top three Mexican filmmakers who have made it big in Hollywood.

Melancholia staring Kirsten Dunst and Keifer Sutherland, which was appreciated by critics and audiences alike. Lars is known for delving into the psyche of the human mind, exploring human relationships and having strong female protagonists in his works who experience transcendence after battling their inner demons.

Lars von Trier Lars von Trier is easily one of the most visually distinctive filmmakers in Hollywood. The director, who hails from Denmark, studied cinema at the Danish Film School and his short film Befrielsesbilleder (1982) (“Images of Relief”), won the Best Film award at the Munich Film Festival the following year. However, he shot into the limelight with his debut feature film, The Element of Crime (1984). A distinctive blend of film noir and German Expressionism, it was a post-modern film with a psychological theme. The movie won the Technical Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His subsequent features Epidemic (1987) and Europa (1991) were equally ambitious both thematically and visually but failed to make an impact like his debut film. He made a comeback in 1991 with Europa which won him the Jury Prize as well as the Technical Grand Prize and Best Artistic Contribution at the Cannes Film Festival. HisBreaking the Waves (1996), for which he won the Jury Prize at Cannes, was the director’s first film (in a trilogy) that centered on the female sex. He followed it up withDancer in the Dark (2000), a melodrama about an east European woman who sacrifices everything, literally, to save her son from getting the same eye-illness she suffers from, which won the 2000 Palm D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Apart from his movies, Lars is also known for his TV mini-series Riget (The Kingdom) (1994) in which he blended his cinematic style with a surrealistic story about ghosts, god and satan. In 2011, the 60-year-old sought inspiration from his personal battle with depression and helmed the Hollywood film

My films are about ideals that clash with the world. Every time it’s a man in the lead, they have forgotten about the ideals. And every time it’s a woman in the lead, they take the ideals all the way. 38 Global Cinema | MAY 2017

Timur Bekmambetov Timur Bekmambetov hailed from a humble Russian-Kazakh family. He developed a passion for cinema after moving to Moscow from Kazakhstan. After attending the Moscow Energy Institute for two years where he was studying to be an engineer, he dropped out of college, and studied painting at Tashkent Theatrical Art Institute. After serving in the Red Army stationed at Turkmenistan for a year, he worked as set designer at a local drama theatre in Tashkent, and at Uzbek Film Studio.

Russia needs big, ambitious and brave film-making. His journey as a director began when he started helming television commercials. In 1992, he made his feature film debut with Peshavarskiy vals (1994), which revolved around the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and won several awards at international film festivals. His big break came with the success of the vampire franchise Night Watch (2004) and Day Watch(2006), which he directed during 2003 - 2005. Both films became international blockbusters, and received several awards and nominations. In 2008, he forayed into Hollywood with Wanted (2008), an action flick about a secret society of assassins starring Angelina Jolie. In 2011, he produced Apollo 18 and followed it up withAbraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. Last year, he directed Ben Hur, the fifth film adaptation of 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. His films are known for their dense narrative and action-packed sequences, leaving the audience wanting for more. GC

The riveting story and Hye-ja’s memorable performance are the highlights of this mystery thriller. Viewers are bound to be glued to their seats as the film has multiple twists and turns right till the end. The movie was included in the “Un Certain Regard” series at Cannes, and shown as part of the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center 2009. 9) The Man from Nowhere (2010) The action-thriller, directed by Lee Jeong-beom, revolves around a pawnshop keeper with a violent past. He is compelled to fight against a drug and organ trafficking racket when the only person he is close to is kidnapped. Though the movie is replete with violence, it portrays the relationship between the man (Bin Won) and his young friend (Sae-ron Kim) beautifully. The film is one of the highest grossers of the year when it was released. 10) I Saw the Devil (2010) This slasher film/ revenge drama, directed by Kim Jee-woon, stars Lee Byung-hun and Choi Min-sik. It follows the trail of a secret service agent and the lengths he goes to nab his fiancée’s psychopathic murderer. He promises himself that he will do everything in his power to take bloody vengeance against the killer, even if it means that he must become a monster himself to get this monstrous and inhumane killer. The line between good and evil begins to blur when the two start playing a dangerous game. Despite having several violent scenes, the movie has been appreciated for the acting, direction, cinematography and script. GC
