LostOfBateqLanguage

Youngergenerationcannotspeaktheproper Bateq language as they were influenced by theMalaylanguagewhichmakesthemhard to communicate with the older generation andartandcraftofBateqhardlygetpassed downtotheyoungone.

LostTouchwiththeirIndigenousNature

Failure to preserve the cultural heritage identity due to lack or no carving master to pass down the art of carving and weaving. Thiscausedlimiteddocumentationontheart andcraftforfutureresearch.Otherthanthat, the art and craft lost their identity as an authentic treasure to represent the tribe becausetheymakethecraftjustforthesake oftourismandbusiness. 1

The Bateq people are more involved in Ecotourism and making business with the Malays. Thus, caused obstruction to their nomadic lifestyle and their hunting and gatheringactivities.

Past : Present Of Bateq

Showcase the art and craft of Bateq Tribe is dying due to the current globalization. The Ipoh tree which is the main source of foodandhuntingtoolsshowthecontrastbetweenthepastand presentoftheartandcraftofBateqTribe.Inthepast,theBateq peoplerespecttheirartofcarving,theartofmakingblowpipes and weaving. But at present, their art lost its authenticity and identityasthemostsacredteasure.Nospecialitycanrepresent theBateqTribejustlikethewiltingtreebranches

Design Intention

The intention is to create a space based on the concept of fusionofmodernartandtraditionalarttocreateanewformof artwiththecollaborationofdifferentideologiesandcreativities from Artisan, Designer and Bateq people. The space allowing people to learn the art of carving using bamboo and express theirowncreativitytohelppreservetheBateqartandcraft.
