Air Diffusers Square Diffusers Introduction The performance objective of a ceiling air Diffuser is to deliver conditioned air into an occupied space in a quiet draft free manner. The performance efficiency of a particular diffuser design is usually judged by the diffuser’s ability to rapidly dissipate the air velocities and temperature differential of the supply air before it enters the occupied space. Many Models are developed by KMC to meet air distribution and architectural requirements.

Construction • Frame & inner cores are made of Extruded Aluminum Profiles of 6063.T6 Alloy, which allow the diffusers to be suitably used for both internal & external applications. • Available in wide variety of sizes ranging from 150x150 upto 600x600mm available in 75mm increments.

Typical specification Ceiling diffusers shall be directional type Model KDF/KDP as manufactured by KMC, and shall have a square or rectangular neck. Diffusers shall have a fixed, horizontal air discharge pattern, and shall be configured with a 1, 2, 3 or 4 way core / discharge pattern as scheduled. The diffuser core shall be removable, without tools, for cleaning or reconfiguring the space air distribution. No screw holes shall be visible.

Air Diffusers Linear Slot Diffusers Introduction KMC Linear Slot Diffusers have been designed to satisfy architectural concepts that require continuous length applications without compromising air distribution performance. These diffusers utilizes an adjustable vane in each slot to control the direction of air discharge either parallel with or perpendicular to its face surface. The adjustment from the face of the diffuser allows for pattern control in a full 180 degree range for either right or left parallel, intermediate or perpendicular.

• For two way applications, determine proportion of air in each direction and refer to throw distance for number of slots in the same direction. • Terminal velocity is the air speed, in meter per second, measured in the supply air stream High Sidewall Applications • When a KSLAD diffuser is used in a high sidewall the air can be: • Projected vertically up the side wall to the ceiling. In this case use the horizontal pattern data, subtracting the KSLAD to ceiling distance from the throw distance given. This is the preferred method. • Directed horizontally and attaches itself to the ceiling via the Coanda effect. In this case, use the vertical projection throw (average of heating and cooling value) times 1.4 when the KSLAD is located close to the ceiling. Decrease the factor 1.4 by .1 (down to a minimum of 1.0) for every 300mm the KSLAD is located below the ceiling. The drop effect must also be studied closely when cooling is used in conjunction with this high sidewall KSLAD mounted more than 300mm – 600mm below the ceiling.

Typical Specification Model : KSLAD / RLAD Aluminum linear slot supply diffusers shall be KMC Model KSLAD Straight Line Adjustable Diffusers, Model KRLAD matching returns (without pattern control vanes. Outer frame type shall conform and integrate with the floor, wall, or ceiling type shown. Linear diffusers shall be available up to 2000mm in single-piece length, and have 1 to 8 slots, with a slot width of 12.5, 19.0 and 25.0 mm as scheduled for the appearance and performance requirements as shown. Diffuser runs greater than 2000mm long shall consist of multiple diffusers aligned end-to-end using alignment strips within the diffuser keyways, to form a continuous slot appearance. Alignment strips shall be provided by the diffuser manufacturer (KMC). Diffusers and matching returns shall consist of extruded aluminum frames, tees, and pattern control components assembled using heavy gauge, coated steel cross members for rigidity. All movable air control components shall be extruded aluminum -steel and plastic control components are not acceptable. Inverted tee members and pattern control components shall be secured to the steel cross members with heavy-duty springs. These components shall be removable, without tools, providing access to the plenum to install as detailed.

The aluminum extruded flow control vanes utilized in supply diffusers shall be independently adjustable within each slot to control air volume and pattern (direction) for vertical or horizontal directions. Inactive sections shall be blanked-off utilizing flow control vanes. Diffuser lengths greater than 1000mm shall include multiple piece flow control vanes. The physical appearance of the face of supply diffusers shall not change regardless of these adjustments. Supply diffusers and return units shall also be identical in appearance from the face. Ice tong designs are not acceptable. Concealed mounting brackets, accessible by removal of inner assemblies, shall be provided for attaching to the supply duct / plenum without any visible mounting screws. Finish shall be KMC Standard colour (RAL 9010) or color as scheduled or selected by the Architect with flat black pattern / volume control elements. KSLAD Accessories KMC Model KED Equalizing Deflectors shall be provided, for field installation and adjustment, for lateral control of the air pattern at 90° to the axis of continuous runs of units, or for spread pattern control of single units. To Adjust The Diffuser Jet For jet stream or diffused air pattern, simply loosen the two axis shaft lockscrews, rotate the inner assembly 180°, and tighten lockscrews
To Set The Air Discharge Direction First loosen the four lockscrews on the faceplate, and turn the diffuser inner assembly until the axis shaft is in its proper plane. Second, to set the inner assembly at the desired angle, loosen the axis shaft lockscrews, position the inner assembly, and tighten all lockscrews.

Air Diffusers Perforated Diffusers Introduction KMC perforated diffusers have been designed to provide superior performance characteristic with application flexibility. These diffusers provide horizontal air pattern with a strong coanda effect against the ceiling. Louvered air pattern controllers located at the inlet neck of the diffuser provide positive air flow control. The pattern controllers simply directs the air flow without restricting the air volume. A wide range of Inlet sizes and module sizes are available.

Air Diffusers Supply & Exhaust Disc Valves Introduction KMC Supply and Exhaust disc valves are utilized where the control of supply or Exhaust air volume flow rate is the primary consideration. These valves offer considerable cost advantage over conventional grilles and diffusers without compromising performance or aesthetics. Ease of adjustments, maintenance and cleaning are also prominent features of these valves.
Application • Type KDV disc valves are suitable for all types of ventilation systems. They have been designed for systems handling relatively low air volumes. • Depending on the application, different constructions for supply (Model KSDV) and extract air (Model KEDV) • By rotating the central disc, the air volume flow rate can be changed.
Construction • This disc valves consist of the valve ring and central disc. To guarantee a perfect seat, the valve ring is fitted with a peripheral sealing strip. • The air volume flow rate is adjusted by rotating the central disc which alters the size of the gap. The central disc is held in position with a locknut.

Typical Specification - EGG Crate Grilles (Grid Core) Drum Louvers (DLAA) KMC Model DLAA Drum Louver shall be furnished and installed where shown on the plans. The drum louver shall provide means for directional control of the supply air in both the horizontal and vertical planes. Horizontal control shall be adjustable up to a 30 degree spread angle, utilizing individually adjustable vanes. The ratio of blade depth to blade spacing shall be greater than 1. Directional control in the vertical plane shall be adjustable plus or minus 30 degrees from horizontal, by rotating the drum about its central axis. The drum louver shall be constructed of aluminum extrusions. The drum assembly shall rotate on pivots at each end of the drum. Both horizontal and vertical discharge directions shall be independently adjustable.

Air Diffusers Installation Instructions With Plenum Box (provided by others) : Fix the plenum to the ceiling. The plenum has a border in the lower part by which theupper part of the diffuser can be inserted into it.Your diffuser is provided with ceiling mounting fixing U- Channels.These channels are inserted into the key way and should be slide into the final position corresponding to the opposite fixing point previously prepared on the U-Bracket as shown (plenums usually supplied with these brackets). The two elements (diffuser and plenum) can be attached together using self tapping screws and screw driver.The diffuser should be made level using a water level and by adjusting the screws positions (left, right, up and down) as shown.
With out Plenum Box: In this case the diffuser can be attached to UShape bracket (providedby others) and rest directly on the ceilingas shown.
Diffusers in Continuous Running: Normal Normal installations as described above but, fix the provided joining key strips between the diffuser and joining sections. After insertion and alignmentof the joined sections set diffusers in the final position.

Typical Specification Aluminum linear bar grilles / registers shall be model LBG (6.35 mm wide bars) by KMC. The grilles shall consist of an outer border or frame, and core configuration as scheduled. Core bars shall be 6.35 mm wide, fixed 12.7mm centers, with a 0, 15, or 45 degree deflection angle. Grille lengths shall be provided up to 2500mm as a single assembly without joints, and up to 200 mm in height as a single core. Longer continuous runs shall be constructed from multiple units, and aligned with alignment hardware from the grille manufacturer (KMC).

Louvers Sand Trap Louvers Introduction KMC sand trap louvers are specifically designed to allow air flow in to buildings at the same time restrict the entry of dust and sand particles where these elements are natural hazards. Manufactured from Galvanized steel material, the units are designed and tested to withstand the most severe weather conditions for many years. Installed vertically in buildings these units provide a unique feature visually but perform an important element in ventilation design.
Application The Sand Trap Louvers Model KSTL are designed for usage in serving as a Pre - Filter element in dusty conditions. Air Terminal KSQ Terminal Flexibility KSQ terminals are available in a wide array of control packages using pneumatic, electronic analog or factory-installed direct digital (DDC) controls. Foil-faced insulation is provided as standard. Fabric Cloth Liner insulation with the edges sealed with either tape or sheet metal (Fibre-Lok) is available. Closed cell (fiber-less) insulation and double wall construction using a full metal liner is also available. KSQ units can be provided with an integral sound attenuator for ultra-quiet performance. Low temperature unit construction is also available using 25mm thick matte-faced insulation and isolation of the air valve from the outer casing. Numerous other optional features are available including single or double cam lock access doors.
Performance The lack of intruding fasteners, tabs or other obstructions in the air stream results in very quiet sound performance and low internal pressure losses. All units incorporate full 90° rotation round dampers (except 600 x 400) for precise control of the airflow. All units are available with pressure independent controls for precise control of the airflow. All units with these controls are factory calibrated for minimum and maximum airflow settings prior to shipment and are easily field adjusted.

Ease of Installation and Reliability KSQ terminals are compact and utilize inlet collars over 125mm in length to allow easy attachment of rigid or flexible duct. The airflow sensor is recessed over 50mm into the air valve providing protection from damage. The discharge end of the terminal has slip and drive connections for easy attachment of downstream duct work. KMC’s KSQ Single Duct terminals are constructed with zinc-coated steel for long life. The unit casings are assembled with a mechanical lock construction that insures a tight seam to minimize air leakage. Casings are internally lined with a wide variety of insulation and treatment options that conform to NFPA and UL requirements. The leaving edge of the insulation is protected from erosion by return bends on the discharge end of the unit casing. The damper blade is made of gasket material sandwiched between two round steel plates. The round damper blade in the air valve is affixed to the shaft using through-the-shaft machine applied rivets. The diecast metal shaft rotates in self-lubricating bearings for easy turning and long operating life. The damper’s flexible gasket seats tightly on the cylinder’s internal bead for tight closure.

Air Terminal KSQ Terminal Selection When selecting KSQ single duct variable air volume terminals, several factors must be considered to make the proper selection including: • • • •
occupied space, these ratings along with the acoustical environment in which the unit operates, will determine the perceived noise level. Noise generated within the terminal and emitted through the discharge air (discharge sound) will be attenuated by any ductwork downstream of the terminal. The noise emitted through the casing of the terminal (radiated sound) will be attenuated by the room’s ceiling. Depending upon the application, either the radiated or discharge noise level will be the relative higher and determine the perceived noise level in the occupied space. The occupied space itself will provide further attenuation depending on the acoustical characteristics of the walls, floors and internal furnishings.
Air Flow and Air Pressure Drop Sound Heating (if required) Controls
Air Flow and Air Pressure Drop All KSQ units can operate over a wide range of airflow. The minimum airflow shown for each unit is the lowest airflow at which the airflow sensor can generate an adequately strong signal for the pressure independent controls to operate properly. The maximum airflow shown for each unit is based on the industry practice of limiting the inlet air velocity to reasonable levels. The units selected should be sized where the design airflow is between the maximum and minimum airflows shown in table 4. Referring to table 6 if 2378 CMH (1400 CFM) is the maximum design airflow, a unit with a 300mm inlet can be selected with an air pressure drop of0.01 inches (2.5pa) w.g.
All manufacturers must make certain assumptions on the acoustical environment of the application and then apply these assumptions to the unit’s sound power ratings to determine the resultant sound pressures and perceived noise level in the occupied space. While the ARI sound power ratings have been certified and can be accurately compared from one manufacturer to another, the NC values predicted will be dependent upon the acoustical assumptions made. When selecting terminals, check the attenuation assumptions before comparing cataloged NC values. KMC uses the ARI Standard 885, Appendix E attenuation assumptions for determining the anticipated noise levels. The attenuation assumptions in this standard are outlined in Table-2.
Sound Performance Tables 7 thru 11 indicate the sound power levels of each unit at varying air flow rates and inlet static pressures. Disregarding other factors and/or equipment that could contribute to the noise in the

Electric Heat The wattage of electric heat needed is determined by dividing the heating required in Mbh by 3.414, which results in the KW of heating required. Using our example, it would require 8.5 KW of electric heat to provide the 29 Mbh heating capacity. Using table 25, the electric coil with 8.5 KW would be selected. Electric heat can be staged or modulated. Note that the electric coil has an air proving switch, which requires a minimum of .07 inch w.g. total pressure entering the coil to prove airflow. Also note that it’s prudent to check the air temperature leaving the heating coil at the design airflow. Using the previous example, the resulting leaving air temperature would be approximately 89° F, which would generally provide a comfortable environment and proper air distribution. Control Sequences A wide array of control sequences are available as standard on Anemostat’s EZT single duct variable air volume terminals. Tables 26 and 27 indicate the control sequences available as standard. Special sequences can also be provided. Pages B-28 through B-32 describe and depict the operating performance for some of the more common control sequences.

Air Terminal Typical Specification Furnish and install KMC’s KSQ Single Duct Variable Air Volume Terminals, KSQA Single Duct Variable Air Volume Terminals with integral sound attenuator, or KSQE Single Duct Variable Air Volume Terminals with integral electric heating coil as shown on the plans. The performance of all Single Duct Terminals shall be certified under ARI Standard 880 and must display the required ARI 880 Certification Seal. Discharge and radiated sound power levels shall not exceed the values as shown on the terminal unit schedule. Casing Construction: The unit casing shall be fabricated from zinc coated steel and use mechanical locking seams to form a leak resistant assembly. Any sealant used in the unit’s construction must be approved for duct use and conform to NFPA 90A. Leakage through the Air Terminal casing shall be less than 1% of the maximum rated air flow @ 750 Pa (3” w.g) static pressure. The terminal discharge connection shall be Slip & Drive type integral to the casing. The casing shall be: • 0.8mm (22G) (standard) • 1.0 mm (20 G) The casing shall be provided with: • Standard control enclosure • Custom sized control enclosure • Hinged front cover for control enclosure Insulation and Treatment: The unit casing shall be internally lined with: • 25mm (1”) thick aluminum foil-faced glass fiber insulation. The edges of the insulation shall be sealed with aluminum tape. The insulation shall conform to NFPA 90A, UL 181, and ASTM C665. • 25mm (1”) thick Fabric Cloth liner faced glass fiber insulation. The edges of the insulation shall be sealed with aluminum tape. The insulation shall conform to NFPA 90A, UL 181, and ASTM C665 • 25mm (1”) thick (fiber-less) smooth skin surface closed cell foam insulation. The insulation shall conform to NFPA 255 and UL 181. • No Insulation Air Valve: The damper assembly shall consist of a round blade that requires nominal 90-degree rotation from fully opened to fully closed positions on sizes 125 (5”) through 16. The damper blade shall be mechanically attached to the die-cast metal damper shaft with through the shaft machine-applied rivets. The low leakage damper shall be constructed of a gasket material sandwiched between two 22-gauge zinc coated steel plates. Leakage through the damper shall be less than 1% of the maximum rated airflow at 750 Pa (3” w.g) static pressure. The damper gasket material is securely fastened between the two damper plates using machine applied rivets. The damper assembly shall rotate freely in Nylon bearings. Damper position shall be indicated on the end of the shaft on the outside of the casing. Inlet connection and damper on size 600 x 400 (24 x 16) shall be rectangular.
Electronic analog controls: The electronic analog controls shall be suitable for a 24-volt control system. The electronic actuator shall be mounted at factory ( either KMC’s standard actuators or furnished by Customer) to move the damper from fully open to fully closed positions. The actuator shall be directly coupled to the damper shaft with no linkages. • The electronic pressure independent controller shall control flow within +/-5% of the design airflow regardless of changes in system static pressure. The controller shall reset the flow as required by the thermostat. The maximum and minimum airflow set points shall be set at the factory. The electronic actuator and controller shall be combined in a single compact housing. The electronic actuator shall be designed for permanent stall without damage and develop a minimum of 5.8 N.M (50 inch-pounds) of torque. The terminal shall also be provided with: • Transformer to step down incoming line voltage to 24 volts (standard on KSQE units with electric heating coils) • Service disconnect switch for 24 volt controls (pilot duty) • Line voltage fusing and fuse block The wall thermostat shall be furnished by KMC for installation by the temperature control contractor. Flow adjustments shall be made at the wall thermostat utilizing a digital voltmeter. It shall be the responsibility of the temperature control contractor to coordinate these requirements with manufacturer (KMC). Electric Heating Coils: KMC’s KSQE units shall have the electric resistance type heating coils and coil controls. The electric coils shall be located a sufficient distance downstream of the primary air damper to prevent hot spots and nuisance tripping. The heating elements shall be installed as an integral part of the terminal unit. All terminals with electric heat shall include high grade nickel-chrome elements, a transformer, air proving switch, primary disc type automatic reset hi-limit (standard), secondary hi-limit manual reset cutout(optional), magnetic contactors and/or PE switches per step, grounding terminal, and circuit fusing on heaters exceeding 48 amps. Coil control enclosure panel and frame shall be constructed from galvanized steel. A wiring diagram shall be permanently affixed to the coil control enclosure panel. Refer to the terminal schedule on the plans for capacity and performance requirements. • In Electronic analog control systems, the terminal manufacturer (KMC) shall interconnect the electronic controls with the electric coil for proper staging of heat. Power connection for the coil and associated flow controls shall be made at a single point. The coils shall also be provided with: • Door interlocking disconnect switch – non-fused (Optional) • Power-fusing (Fuses and fuse blocks) • SSR proportional modulating controller • Transformer
Airflow Sensor: A multi-point airflow sensor (FloXact-X ™) of the multi-point averaging type shall be located in the terminal inlet. The airflow sensor shall be designed to have unique shape and creates a linear amplified signal with a low noise level and pressure drop. The sensor shall amplify (at least 2.5x Pdyn) the velocity pressure signal and provide feedback of actual flow to the controller to have stable measuring signal from 0.8 m/s Air velocity

Typical Specification Furnish and install KMC’s Model KME variable air volume, cooling only bypass / relief type air terminals where shown on the plans. The terminals shall consist of a single primary air damper that shall proportion the total primary air through the terminal to either the ceiling plenum or the space as dictated by the space thermostat demand. The flow into the relief terminal shall remain essentially constant regardless of the primary damper position. The terminal casing shall be fabricated of minimum 22 gauge zinc coated steel, and shall be lined with minimum 25mm thk fiberglass insulation conforming to ASTM C1071. A radiated noise shroud shall limit the radiated sound levels not to exceed those shown in the air terminal unit schedule. A bypass adjustment damper shall be located on the top of the unit to allow for field balancing of the unit to maintain a constant total flow to the unit from maximum to zero bypass. A balancing damper (provided by the installing contractor) shall be located a minimum o f three diameters upstream of the relief air terminal to adjust the constant volume flow to the unit.

The terminal controls shall include a mechanical damper position stop or other means to keep the damper from closing to full shut-off, providing a minimum air flow across the coil during the heating mode. Electric Control Systems Electric controls shall be compatible with the line voltage feed to the terminal and shall include a step down transformer as required for control voltage compatibility. The electric actuator shall be designed for permanent stall without damage. A steel control enclosure shall house all control components. The wall thermostat shall be supplied by the (terminal manufacturer) (control contractor) and shall be compatible with the air terminal electric controls.
