St Padarn's Institute Roadshow 30.3.19 12-2pm St Frances Centre, Holy Trinity, Llandrindod What is St. Padarn’s St Padarn’s is a bold, innovative, move by the Church in Wales to reformulate formation and training across the whole of Wales. The Church in Wales is committed to its 2020 vision to live out God’s transforming mission of love for Wales, within the strengths of the Anglican tradition, responsive to the needs to contemporary society. To do that it needs missionorientated formation and training for the whole people of God. So it has created the St Padarn’s Institute to be at the heart of all formation and training for the Church – for congregation members growing in their discipleship, for those being locally commissioned for service, for those preparing for new licensed ministries such as Pioneers, Pastors and Youth and Children’s Workers, for those preparing for ordination, and for the continuing development of all its ministers. It is also to give new impetus to research and reflection on Welsh theology and mission, as well as being part of the wider theological thinking and learning of the church across denominational and national boundaries. St Padarn’s is not a place, or a college in a traditional sense. It is a community of formation for mission, working in partnership with bishops, diocese and local church communities. All that it does is rooted in deepening spirituality as we allow God to form us into people of faith, hope and courage, sustained and inspired in prayer.

Magazine for the Builth Ministry Area March 2019 Are you exploring a call within the Church in Wales All God’s people are called to be involved in ministry and through our Living & Learning Resources and our Theology for Life Course we can help equip you to do that. Or are you seeking a more formal ministry? It could be as a Licensed Lay Minister, NonStipendiary Clergy, or Stipendiary Clergy. There are a variety of possibilities such as parish priest, pioneer, youth and children’s worker or focal worker. Training pathways are suited to individuals’ circumstances and the needs of the ministry. You will have a number of questions; What are the practicalities? Will I need to move house? What if I’m not particularly academic? What training will I need? Will it cost me anything? Our St Padarn’s Roadshow Team will be there to answer all these questions and more. Please feel free to bring friends, spouse, etc Whether you are exploring a call to formal ministry or just want to know more about St Padarn’s, all are welcome. Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn Dear Friends,

Events and Meetings:

In March I am always reminded of the saying ‘Mad as a March Hare’. This phrase goes back to 1546 when it appeared in John Heywood’s book of proverbs and is based upon the hare’s behaviour at the beginning of the long breeding season, which lasts from February to September in Britain. Early in the season, unreceptive females often use their forelegs to repel overenthusiastic males. It used to be incorrectly believed that these bouts were between males fighting for breeding supremacy.

In Lewis Carroll’s the Mad hatter’s tea party, the hare always behaves as though it is tea-time because the Hatter supposedly "murdered the time" whilst singing for the Queen of Hearts. In an illustration by John Tenniel the hare has straw on his head which in the Victorian era depicts madness.

In March we begin the start of Lent with our Benefice Ash Wednesday Service at 7 pm on the 6th March at St David’s Church Glascwm. When you walk through St David’s churchyard at this time of year, you can see a carpet of snowdrops being replaced by daffodils. Even the Mad March Hare must be impressed with the beautiful flowers and the wonderful views of the rolling hills which surround this lovely church. Why not come along and participate in the Ashing Service.

Blessings to you all.

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All,

away from us by thinking in terms of aspiration rather than conflict and loss. This involves turning all the intentions of our hearts toward the Father; repenting to him. After all, we are his children. Through this act of following our deepest response and attraction toward God, the idea of Christian sacrifice may be seen to possess a natural quality wherein our sin is nothing more than a hindrance to fulfilling our desired closeness with the Divine. Our desire for this sacred union takes precedence over any element of struggle. Sacrifice then becomes a natural and logical desire within us, because if we attempt to combat the temptation to sin without calling on the help of God, we will fail.

The timing of our Lenten journey, in this Church year, coincides well with March. Ash Wednesday falls on the 6th of the month and we begin to hold ourselves in readiness for the desolation of Good Friday before our spirits are again renewed with the glimpse of heaven’s eternity that is the Resurrection. Lent is a Christian season that is, emotionally, far from simple. We enter, once more, our period of self-examination and assess how we are coping with the ongoing spiritual journey that God has graciously given to each one of us. Gratitude is a good starting point. We may remember that many of us are a lucky enough to be able to take such an objective stance on our lives rather than to be overwhelmed by the pain that is being felt by much of the world. Thus, let constant prayer for others accompany all our Lenten deliberations and let our thanks for God’s goodness be the basis of these prayers and a true belief in his transforming power.

This may be seen in the testing of Jesus in the desert. Satan wills Christ to take sole refuge in his humanity through the comfort of food, safety and the gratification of power. At every crisis Our Lord does not rely solely on his will but invokes the power of God: Firstly, he proclaims that we live by the word of God, secondly, he emphasises that God must not be put to the test and, finally, he states that we must serve God alone. (Matthew 4:1-11) How awesome is the proud Son who emerges from the battle to embrace his baptism and never look back until he mounts the cross for us. The Son of God himself has given us the pattern through which we may conduct our own battles with Satan. Let us own the divinity within us by accepting yet transcending the conflict.

Our gratitude may then, within our prayers, create an element of surrender to God that helps to balance any self-interest of our spiritual endeavours. Many people blame God for much that they do not like in the world and in their own lives attempt to evoke his presence on their own terms – the paradox is that a truthful recognition of God’s unfathomable grace enables his transforming power to be fully realised within our troubled world.

Passiontide begins on Palm Sunday the 14th April. Please rest secure in the redemptive power of the Paschal Lamb as, for us, his sacrificial journey to the cross begins.

This feeling of surrender fuels our human power of repentance. We turn our hearts to live fully in his will and step consciously into God’s eternal time, a time that is also a place wherein all change for good is possible and, in which, he will bring us to be the true people we were created to be - in his own image; together as the Body of Christ.

The Lord bless us, keep us and preserve us in everlasting life.

Through experiencing repentance we will inevitably be brought to a point of focus that involves the profound nature of sacrifice. As we fully immerse ourselves in a relationship with God, we are invited to let the sin fall
