Living our Spirituality Out … Dot-to-Dot Many people would agree that every human being has a spiritual aspect or side to them. Spirituality is often understood as the meaning we ascribe to ourselves, the world, and even the universe around us, as well as our ultimate beliefs and values about birth, life and death. It’s about connecting all the different points in our lives like a ‘dotto-dot’ until we start to see the whole picture. Christian spirituality is based on four important relationships – our relationship with God, with ourselves, with others and with the created world. God is described as being ‘closer to us than we are to ourselves’ and yet so often we seem far away. Our spirituality therefore, has to address the question of how to live with God who is often present, but sometimes absent. The Psalmist prays; ‘give me an undivided heart’ – focusing on expanding that part of us which is open God. Thomas Merton, a monk was clear; ‘don’t go into the desert to escape people – but to find them in God.’ Somehow getting closer to God helps us to be closer to others especially those who are different to us. And finally, our spirituality should be healing the way we relate to the amazing world around us which is in such danger. In this way, we do not separate our inner and outer worlds – our prayer and our action are intimately connected.

Jesus Christ, the one Christians follow, seemed to have these four relationships fully clear and open in his life. He knew that he was God’s beloved child and that gave him a secure identity and so knew God’s will for his life and the world. He announced God’s Kingdom which was radically inclusive and healing of all – including people who were thought of as complete outsiders. And he was able to calm a storm. Through all this, he prayed, and he taught his followers to pray. In order to provide guidance, The Church in Wales offers a framework to help us live the life of Christ. It is loosely based on the Rule of St Benedict and is intended as a basic commitment for every Anglican Christian in Wales … it is referred to as the Church in Wales ‘Rule of Life’: In response to the love of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I offer my life to God and commit myself to: • • • •

Praying and listening to God daily, worshipping with the church and being fed by him in the Eucharist Growing in my understanding of God by daily Bible reading and reflection, and learning together with the church Serving God in my daily life and work Sharing God’s gifts of time, talents and money with my neighbours, the church, the community and the world.

Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn Dear Friends,

Events and Meetings

You will have noticed that St Mary’s Church, Llanfaredd will be holding our yearly Rogation Sunday Service. This takes place on the 19th May at 10.00. Everyone is welcome to come to ‘the church in the farmyard.’ The word “rogation” is from the Latin rogare, “to ask” and historically, the Rogation Days were the three days before Ascension Day. This service is where we ask God’s blessing on, not just Church House Farm, but on all our farmers, their families, animals, farmhouses, farmyards and buildings. After a short Communion service in church we all process out, to see God’s beautiful creation of hills and fields, we then look to the fields and ask God’s blessing on the land which provides the flocks with food and drink. As we walk around we thank God for the companionship and variety of animals and birds and lastly, we thank God for all farmers, for their skills and hard work and their energy. We finish off the morning by sharing in a well-earned cup of tea/coffee and fellowship.

A prayer for Rogationtide: Remember, Lord, your mercy and loving-kindness towards us. Bless this good earth and make it fruitful. Bless our labour and give us all things needed for our daily lives. Bless the homes of our parish and all who live within them. Bless our common life and our care for our neighbour. Hear us, good Lord. Amen.

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle love and understanding. As with all Luke’s unique stories, this one is full of humanity, movement and aspiration. Mary rushes to be with Elizabeth, John leaps in his Mother’s womb and all the irrepressible emotion of the moment culminates with her outpouring of her joy in The Magnificat. Thus, the day after we are celebrating the ascension of Jesus into heaven, the birth story is beginning again. We are shown that the birth, Passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus are inseparable events in the story and through his incarnation as God on earth we are presented with the single truth that the cycle of worldly life and death is within the eternal setting of God’s will for his children; through his love, death is not the end – new life will always follow. We may not deeply understand this or truly believe it when we are bewildered or sorrowful, but the Gospels are unequivocal about the importance of the God who has risen. Like the father of the epileptic boy seeking healing for his son, perhaps we should daily say: “Lord I have faith. Help my lack of faith.” (Mark 9:24.)

Dear All, Alleluia, Christ is risen! Well done and thank-you to all who joined in the celebrations of Holy Week. The presence of the faithful presence makes the memory of our Lord’s Passion a tangible reality in our hearts and minds. Now, allow the power of his resurrection to sustain you when you need to feel his strength, and may this enhance your heart’s reception of the Easter joy now and always. This year, May gives us the remaining four weeks of the Easter Season in which to revel in this joy. God continues to answer our questioning hearts by nurturing the seeds of new growth that began with our Lenten journey; deepening our relationship with him through helping us to love his Son in a new way. The Father has carried us into the death of his Son and now draws Jesus from death to life and presents him to the disciples and to the world. Enjoy the resurrection stories! - He is our Risen Lord; this is our Scripture. We are born to new life in him and there will be no end to this growth. This is the very essence of Spring. May it be always Springtime in each and every Christian heart. How fitting that the Feast of Mary’s Visitation to Elizabeth falls on the last day of the month as, this year, we enter into the glorious climax of the Easter Season that is made up of the three festivals of Ascension Day, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday. The Visitation is Luke’s wonderful grounding of the Incarnation within a domestic picture of close family

So, let us truly continue to celebrate Eastertide this May and may we all dwell in the continuing joy that a heartfelt knowledge of the Resurrection may bring. He is risen indeed! Alleluia. All blessings. Father Paul. X

RAF Association calls for volunteers across Builth Wells to tackle loneliness The RAF Association is looking to recruit volunteers across Builth Wells and surrounding areas for its befriending service, which pairs volunteers with members of the RAF community who are struggling with feeling lonely or isolated. With 170,000 RAF veterans dealing with issues of isolation, and 85,000 of them coping specifically with feelings of loneliness, 1 the service is a valuable source of companionship to members of the RAF family. Looking to recruit volunteers from all backgrounds who are 18 years old or over, the Association’s Volunteer Manager, Katharine Lord, points out there are key qualities they look for in befrienders: “Befrienders can play such an important role in somebody’s life and while there is no single type of person we look for, a good befriender is someone that is caring and empathetic, able to build a rapport with people, is reliable and a good listener.” Volunteers support befriendees in a number of ways such as popping round for a cup of tea, researching local community groups where the befriendee could potentially meet new friends, or simply being at the end of the phone for a chat. It’s not just the befriendee who benefits from the service. The benefits for volunteers include learning new skills, building confidence, meeting new people and the opportunity to give back to their community. Those who successfully complete training will also achieve the AIM Awards Level 1 Award in Befriending qualification. Kelly, an Association befriender said: “Everyone you meet is so interesting and they all have a twinkle in their eye about what they got up to. It’s brilliant!” The training given to volunteers is a one-day course, run locally, that covers everything volunteers need to know to be an effective befriender. To find out more, search for ‘befriender’ roles on the RAF Association website at www.rafa.org.uk/volunteer. You can also call 0800 018 2361 or email volunteers@rafa.org.uk
