Issue No 179
Magazine for the Irfon and Wye Valley Churches February 2016
by David Anderson “Invest in credit unions to help families in desperate financial need,” the Archbishop of Wales urged church members in a pre- presidential talk. “If everyone put just £10 or £20 a month into a credit union account they would no longer be seen as poor people’s banks and the market for pay day loan companies would be stifled,” Dr Morgan said. The Archbishop, who has been a member of a credit union for many years, said, “We can only remove the market for pay day loans if an alternative is available to lend to people at a reasonable rate and this is where credit unions can play a vital part. Sadly, credit unions are not part of the fabric of British society as they are in Ireland, Australia, America and Canada. In this country, they are seen as something that exists for poor people. In fact, of course, if we all paid money into credit unions, say £10 or £20 a month, this would remove the image of them being poor people’s banks. This would not be a gift on our part. We would get a half percent return on our investment, which is far more than you get in the current accounts of most banks at the present time. More importantly, money could be lent at reasonable interest rates, to people who
desperately need it. Likewise, if we too fell on hard times, we could borrow.” He said, “This Church, along with other churches at the minute, runs youth clubs, visits the elderly, provides food and shelter for the homeless, and raises money for the poorest parts of our world. Becoming involved in Credit Unions might be a further way of helping families in desperate financial circumstances, to access loans at more tolerable interest rates, and help transform lives.” So, what can we do locally if you wish to find out more about Credit Unions in this area? Did you know that we have a Credit Union based on our doorstep? The Red Kite Credit Union (RKCU) has an office in Market Street, Builth Wells and is open on Monday (11.30am – 1.00pm) and Friday (10.00am – 1.00pm). A second ‘Service Point’ in the Herb Garden Café in Llandrindod Wells which is open Monday to Saturday 9.30am – 5.00pm. RKCU is run by a small group of volunteers for the benefit of its members. We are always on the lookout for new members and who may be interested in volunteering.

Weekday Worship
THE FOUNTAIN INN
Across the Ministry Area Christians are gathering every day to pray and support each other – why not join in? From earliest times, Christians gathered at regular hours during each day to respond to God's word with praise on behalf of creation and with intercession for the salvation of the world. Daily services help Christians of our own day take part in this privilege and duty which belongs to all God's people. They may be celebrated in a very simple form, or enriched with a variety of optional prayers. In our own ministry area we offer two types of weekday services – Offices and Eucharists.

Church takes Ash Wednesday to the Streets
On Ash Wednesday, February 10th, the Churches of the Builth Ministry Area will be offering ‘Ashes to Go’, a new approach to a centuries-old Christian tradition, on Builth Wells High Street from 12.30-13.30. Builth Ministry Area is part of a new nationwide movement that has clergy and lay people visiting bus stops, street corners, coffee shops, and university campuses to mark the foreheads of interested passers-by with ashes and invite them to repent of past wrongdoing and seek forgiveness and renewal. In the Christian tradition, Ash Wednesday marks the start of the holy season of Lent, a time for reflection and repentance in preparation for the celebration of Easter. For centuries, Christians have received a cross of ashes on the face at the beginning of that season as a reminder of mortal failings and an invitation to receive God’s forgiveness. ‘Ashes to Go’ provides the opportunity to participate in that tradition for people who have lost their connection to a church, or have never participated before. “Ashes to Go is about bringing the important traditions of our faith out from behind church walls and into the places we need them every day,” says the Rev. Emily Mellott, who maintains the website AshesToGo.org with resources and stories about this ministry. “As people get busier and busier, we need the church in new and non-traditional ways. We especially need reminders of forgiveness in the tough places of our working lives. The people who accept ashes on the street are often people longing to make a connection between their faith and the forces of daily life, and Ashes to Go helps them feel that connection.” In Mid-Wales the Builth Ministry Area is offering ‘Ashes to Go’ for the first time this year. On Ash Wednesday (10th February) Father Neil and Mother Petra will be offering ‘Ashes to Go’ in Builth High Street to ANYONE as they believe that ‘Ashes to Go’ is about bringing spirit, belief, and belonging out from behind church doors, and into the places where we go every day. It’s a simple event with deep meaning, drawing on centuries of tradition and worship to provide a contemporary moment of grace. For more information about the ‘Ashes to Go’ movement see www.AshesToGo.org

From the Vicarage Dear friends,
Once again year our Lenten devotions in the Builth Group are focused around the three core pillars of Christian Lenten Practice - Prayer, Fasting & Almsgiving and Teaching. In our parish prayer life we are joining with our brothers and sisters from the different denominations around Builth on Wednesday evenings for a sequence of Lenten Worship (see p.3). As a Congregational Fast (as described in Isaiah 58:6- 7) our ‘Be a Smartie for Lent’ alms boxes will be distributed at the end of January with monies collected going to the Bishops Lenten Appeal 2016. In our teaching we are going to both ‘give something up’ and ‘take something up’ by bringing our own bibles from home to Church every Sunday during Lent instead of having the readings provided for us on the pewsheet. Pilgrim Course This wonderful course on Thursdays at 7.00pm which helps individuals explore the Christian faith starts on 21st January in the Christian Centre for Rural Wales on the Showground. For more details see the article on p9 or speak to Janet.

All may attend these events and receive the imposition of Ash – even if they are not regular communicants.

The Records of the Armed Services Most of us will have relatives that have served with the armed forces at some time, and whether it be for the duration of a conflict, for national service, in the territorials or as a regular soldier, there will be records detailing the soldiers’ activities, conduct, injuries, and sometimes even physical appearance. There may also be details of the spouse and family of the serving soldier. Due to the nature of the service your ancestor may have served in various parts of the world and so be hard to trace. Before the English Civil War there was no regular army and regiments were raised and paid for by wealthy landowners etc. and records for these are very scant. To find information regarding your ancestor in later services it is very helpful to have an idea of the unit he/she served in and also his/her service number. Military records can give masses of leads to follow as can be seen below. It is very satisfying to find information such as the medal card for my g. grandfather, Fred Tibble. From this I was able to find information on his ship and thus via the wonders of Google;; what type of ship it was, what it was doing in this region, for what the Ashanti medal was awarded, what the medal looked like and also very interestingly that the entire ships’ crew was awarded the freedom of the city of Portsmouth. And also Alfred Sackley, my great grand uncle (brother of my g.grandmother), who unfortunately paid ‘the ultimate price.’ From this information I could establish where the battalion was in October 1918, what battles they were involved in and where he was killed. I could then via the Commonwealth War Graves Commission find his grave. UK, Naval Medal & Award Rolls, 1793-1972 UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 Name Fred G Tibble Name Alfred Sackley Medal or Award Ashanti Medal Birth Place Longstock, Hants Service Year 1890-1898 Residence Stockbridge, Hants Service Location Africa Death Date 2 Oct 1918 Campaign or Service Ashanti Death Place France and Flanders Ship Name St George Enlistm’t Place Winchester Rank Private Regiment Hampshire Regiment Battalion 15th (Service) Battalion Reg’tal No. 24747 Type Casualty Killed in action Theatre of War Western European Theatre The amalgamation of The Royal Flying Corps and the Army’s Royal Flying Corps saw the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918, and records for this are held at TNA. The Navy was the biggest employer at the end of the eighteenth century and records are numerous. To make it easier to trace your naval ancestor it would be advantageous to know the name of the ship on which he served. The National Archives (TNA), hold the majority of service records up to the end of WW1, and there are many records at The General Registers Office, after this records are to be found in Glasgow at The Army Records Office. The National Archives have numerous guides to how to find your service relatives and it is wise to read the relevant ones before plunging into the vast collections of documents. ‘Nearer to God in a Garden’ - February
Euphorbia – Spurge
A vast genus of plants with many garden-worthy evergreen hardy perennials that are useful in winter and spring gardens, Euphorbia is named after Euphorbus, physician to Juba, King of Mauritania. Spurge is from the Old French - espurge, to purge and to purify. How spurge got its name is a mystery as all parts are poisonous especially the milky sap from broken stems which can cause severe skin irritation. Common spurge is a weed so be careful of the sap when pulling it up. You may have been given a Poinsettia over Christmas, this is Euphorbia pulcherrima meaning beautiful. The plant's association with Christmas comes from 16th century Mexico. A poor girl placed weeds on the church altar on the advice of an angel and they blossomed into a Poinsettia. From there on the plants became an important part in Mexican Christmas celebrations, a tradition that was picked by America in the 19th Century and then by European Countries. Poinsettia is a house plant that will keep its red bracts until the spring but is difficult to keep going after that.

The Pilgrim Course ‘Pilgrim’ is a major teaching and discipleship resource from the Anglican Church. It aims to help every local church create a place where people can explore the Christian faith together and see how it can be lived out each day. Pilgrim takes a different approach to other Christian programmes. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers. The course being offered at the beginning of 2016 focuses on the question of ‘How do Christians know and worship God?’ it explores this topic through one of the greatest Christian treasures, The Lord's Prayer. Starting Thursday 21st January at 7pm – 9pm over 6 weeks and continuing 4th Feb, 18th Feb, 17th Mar, 31st Mar and 14th April at the Christian Centre for Rural Wales on the Showground in Builth Wells. For more details on the course check out www.pilgrimcourse.org or speak to our local course coordinator Mrs Janet Day on 01982 553623 or email djd@janetdaydesigns.co.uk This course is free of charge. We read and explore together scripture and listen to pre-recorded reflections. This course is ecumenical and is designed to help you discover the Christian way of life. It unpacks the basic message and teaching of the Christian faith. All are most welcome.

As we come into a new year we also start to think about what we are going to do in the months that stretch ahead. Some of us will have made resolutions whilst others are thinking long term. I have done both, my resolutions are going ok so far but the long term plans are really making me feel positive. As a group we have the opportunity to look sensibly at our churches and see what they can offer. Most of us have come to terms with the fact that this may mean change. Change is not always bad and does not always mean doing away with something but can mean adding more. This year is a year of positive change and reaching out to those who as yet do not know us. God’s Word will be available to all. One unhappy note is that Caerwnon Park Songs of Praise is on hold for a while as people have not been attending. I hope and pray that this is a temporary situation. Love and blessings
