Love our Neighbours Sunday 15th May marks the start of Christian Aid Week 2016. Christian Aid was established in 1945 by the Churches of Britain and Ireland, including the Church in Wales. As the international development agency of the Church, Christian Aid works in 39 countries worldwide, supporting long-term development projects, providing emergency humanitarian aid, and campaigning on issues of justice, such as Climate Change, Gender Equality, and Tax Transparency. Christian Aid Week is the largest single collective act of Christian witness in Wales, and we are all invited once more to love every neighbour. This year we follow the families of two women, Morsheda and Feroza, who live on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Bangladesh. It is one of the poorest countries on earth, where people face daily challenges beyond our comprehension.
Morsheda and her family live in a single-room, corrugated-iron shack on a low-lying island. Her home has been flooded four times, and she lives in constant fear of the rising river. It is not a safe environment for her to raise her children, and it is impossible for her to build a sustainable future. She lives on less than $2 a day. But it needn’t be like this for Morsheda, and thousands like her. Feroza, and her family, lived
+ John Swansea and Brecon
in similar conditions. But thanks to a Home Safety Package from Christian Aid, costing just £250, Feroza was able to protect her home from the floods, giving her a safe place to rebuild, keep livestock and grow crops – providing her with a long-term income, and a solid foundation for the future.
Jesus said “The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18). Supporting and nourishing those less fortunate than us across the world is thus a duty for Christians. But it is also a joy – celebrating our faith that God is Love, and letting that love flow through us, through our communities, and out to our global neighbours. It was a small act of kindness that transformed Feroza’s life. Consider what act of kindness, great or small, you can make to support Christian Aid through collections in church, by helping with our local House to House collection, by coming to local event etc., and proclaim that we all believe in life before death. THE FOUNTAIN INN
Across the Ministry Area Christians are gathering every day to pray and support each other – why not join in? From earliest times, Christians gathered at regular hours during each day to respond to God's word with praise on behalf of creation and with intercession for the salvation of the world. Daily services help Christians of our own day take part in this privilege and duty which belongs to all God's people. They may be celebrated in a very simple form, or enriched with a variety of optional prayers. In our own ministry area we offer two types of weekday services – Offices and Eucharists.

From the Vicarage Dear friends, For two millennia, Christians have been celebrating the ‘church's birthday’ - as the feast of Pentecost is often called - and have been engaged in the public sphere, proclaiming Jesus as Lord of all. We are conscious of the fact that this, in the past, often was combined with a spirit of superiority without respect for the dignity of all human beings regardless of religion, race, sexuality, gender or ethnic belonging. This kind of arrogance was not of the Holy Spirit manifested at Pentecost, the Spirit of Christ who overcomes the dividing walls of enmity and affirms the rich diversity of all life. The Spirit of Pentecost calls us on the way of justice and peace as disciples following Christ and joining fellow pilgrims. I urge all of you to reflect on the Bishop’s Pastoral Letter elsewhere in this issue and to pray with me that we will soon open all of the churches sacraments to everyone regardless of sexuality. Pob bendith Father Neil

A Pastoral Letter from the Bishops of the Church in Wales to all the faithful concerning gay and lesbian Christians.
One of the most contentious issues for Christians in our day has been the question of how the Church responds to those attracted to the same gender who seek the blessing of the Church upon the committed partnerships they form. Over the last eighteen months, we have conducted a wide consultation in Governing Body and with the dioceses to explore whether the faithful of the Church in Wales felt it would be appropriate to acknowledge same sex unions in Church, by offering a Blessing, or even permitting the marriage of same sex couples in Church. Given that the civil law of the realm has now been changed to permit marriage of same sex couples, many see this as a natural next step. The results of the consultation have been very varied: in some dioceses there was a strong voice for the status quo, in others a majority who wanted to see change. In the subsequent debate in Governing Body, it became clear that although a majority of members supported change, there was certainly no consensus, and any move to introduce changes in canon law would not meet the required two thirds majority of Governing Body, voting in houses, to enable such changes. Furthermore, any change to the teaching of the Church on Marriage, or the authorisation of any blessing of these unions in the life of the Church, would depend on legislation by bill procedure, which requires such enhanced majorities to take effect. Since the conclusion of our consultation, the Primates of the Anglican Communion have also met in Canterbury in January of this year. The issue of the Church’s ministry to gay and lesbian persons was at the centre of their agenda, especially since The Episcopal Church (of the United States) has taken steps to amend their marriage canon to remove references to the gender of the couple.
The Primates condemned homophobic prejudice and violence and affirmed their commitment again to offer pastoral care and loving service irrespective of sexual orientation. They also rejected criminal sanctions against same-‐‑sex attracted people. They recognised that the Christian Church, including Anglicans, has often acted in a way towards people on the basis of their sexual orientation that has caused deep hurt. They expressed their profound sorrow and affirmed again that God's love for every human being is the same, regardless of their sexuality, and that the Church should never by its actions give any other impression.
Nevertheless, they also reasserted the understanding within the Anglican Communion as a whole that marriage is between a man and a woman in faithful, lifelong union. They indicated that they believed that any move away from this understanding is considered by many of them as a departure from the mutual accountability and interdependence implied through being in relationship with each other in the Anglican Communion.
What this all means is that we, as Bishops of the Anglican Communion, mindful of the results of our consultation and the Statement of the Primates of the Anglican Communion, and of all our members, including those who are gay and lesbian, do not feel that we can support at this time a move to change the discipline of the Church in Wales with respect to the teaching on marriage, nor can we permit the celebration of public liturgies of blessing for same sex unions.
Nevertheless, we acknowledge the gay and lesbian members of our Church as part of our family, and we wish to address them directly:
“Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
We recognise that you have often been persecuted and ostracized by the Church for your sexuality, that you have been mistreated by the Church, and forced into secrecy and dissimulation by the attitudes of prejudice which you have faced. We deplore such hostility, and welcome and affirm the words of the Primates that condemn homophobic prejudice and violence. We too commit ourselves to offering you the same loving service and pastoral care to which all humanity is entitled, and we commit ourselves to acting to provide a safe space within the Church and within our communities in which you can be honest and open, respected and affirmed.
While as a Church we remain unable to bless the committed partnerships you form in marriage or in civil partnership, yet we commit ourselves as bishops to work for a Church in which you can be fully affirmed as equal disciples of Jesus Christ or seekers after truth. We will pray with you and for you, that together we may seek God’s blessing on our lives, and for faithful discipleship.”
Since 2005, the Bench of Bishops has acknowledged that there are a range of views with respect to homosexuality, which have to be recognized as “honest and legitimate differences” within the diversity of 8
opinion in the Church in Wales.
Given that diversity in the Church in Wales, and our commitment to affirm the place of gay and lesbian disciples within the Church, we believe that it is appropriate to offer prayers in response to the pastoral need of those gay and lesbian persons who are making profound commitments to friendship or partnership. With this pastoral letter, we offer prayers which we believe are suitable for those who are marking a committed relationship. Whilst we do not prescribe their use, where they are found suitable or helpful, we are happy to commend them.
The issues around human sexuality that are being debated in the Church will not go away, and the pain and tensions experienced in the debate are not over. We do believe however that we are called to live in love and charity with one another, whatever our experience or convictions on this issue, and we call upon all followers of Jesus Christ to respond with grace and as much accommodation as possible to all our brothers and sisters in Christ, including those who are gay or lesbian.
May the Lord bless his Church with such love and understanding that we may always walk in his ways of mercy.
The Welsh Newspaper Archive
The Welsh newspaper archive is held at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. It is a free resource and there are over 100 titles to browse from pre 1910. Amazingly the technology employed will allow a researcher to browse the chosen newspaper page by page, and also search for specific names, dates or words in all the pages of the collection. Historically newspaper printing arrived in Wales later than the rest of the UK, with the first printing press being established in 1718. However, it wasn’t until 1804 that the first newspaper was published (up until then it had been pamphlets etc.), and it was called The Cambrian, based in Swansea. North Wales then followed suit with The North Wales Gazette produced in Bangor in 1808, and then The Carmarthen Journal in 1810, to cover west Wales. The first daily newspaper was The Cambrian Daily Leader (1861), and The Western Mail (1869). The first Welsh language newspaper was the Seren Gomer in 1814. This was the first newspaper that felt it was truly a national newspaper, produced to serve the whole of Wales and Welsh language speakers, and to strengthen the use of the language. The family historian would be negligent not to consult the local and national newspapers when researching their family tree. They are a very valuable source that can give a lot of information on local people, their lives, their businesses and leisure activities. For example, I discovered that my ancestor Wadham Yates was killed on 31st March 1919, by suffering “compression” of the skull due to seven prisoners of war being negligent in the dockyard in which he was working, and not holding a rope properly. They in essence let go of the rope and allowed a metal beam to fall on him!! This was reported in the local paper as: “tragic death of local man”. The report unfortunately does not detail what happened to the prisoners. Some research for me to follow up on! A lot can be discovered from just a few lines as the following announcement in the South Wales Echo of 28th December 1891 illustrates: “DEATH. THOMAS.—On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24tli, 1891, at the Great Western Railway Station, Cardiff, accident- ally and almost instantaneously, Henry Mackenzie Thomas, of Great House, Bonvilstone, for over ten years manager of the Western Mail" newspaper, and secretary to the firm of Daniel Owen and Co., Limited, aged 36 years.” This shows that poor Mr Thomas more than likely had a run in with a train. This could be discovered in the local papers, reported probably under inquests and/or obituaries. It may also be in the railway archives. However, we also have from this Mr Thomas’s full name and his residence address, his age and his occupation. With the popularity of newspapers on the increase, family announcements were often placed in the papers, and held much detail as we can see above, however obituaries contain a lot more detail, giving family ties and a potted life history. Marriages were elaborately reported, detailing the guests, the bridal wear, the bridal attendants and their connection to the bride, the church and the cleric, the honeymoon destination, if any, where the happy couple would set up home and in some cases who gave the bride away, especially if it wasn’t her father. Births were reported in a slightly less protracted way, though can still give valuable information such as the address of the birth and the occupation of the father. Not much of a mention for the poor labouring wife though! “PHILLIPS. — On the 1st instant, at The Bank House, Barry, the wife of Mr W. Prichard Phillips, manager of the London and Provincial Bank, of a daughter.” (Barry Dock News 4th July 1902). Next time, researching in newspapers. Happy researching Julie 9

The summer is coming and so are many opportunities for fellowship and fundraising, which go easily hand in hand. So let us join together and look positively towards the future.
We have come through our first month without pew sheets and I am pleased to say that there have been some positive outcomes. St James have a prayer cupboard which is being utilised and it is lovely to see that people are going in during the day and putting prayers in. I do welcome all comments positive and negative as this is the only way we can move forward by being honest with each other.
Love and blessings Petra

Nearer to God in a Garden – May
CUCUMBERS When the Israelites were wandering in the desert their thoughts turned to the food they used to enjoy (Numbers 11:5,6). “We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the garlic. But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.” The cucumber was a tropical plant known as the snake cucumber with long, grooved fruits. The cucumbers we grow are salad cucumbers in the greenhouse or the ridge variety suitable for outdoors. You can start cucumbers from seed at the beginning of May or buy them as small plants later in the month ready to be planted out in June. Outdoor cucumbers are grown on a raised soil ridge in a sunny spot. Salad cucumbers are best grown in a warm, humid greenhouse. Both varieties are easy to grow in Builth and produce many cucumbers.
