Two Decades on …
a reflection by Canon Enid Morgan
Twenty years of women’s ministry as priests was celebrated at simultaneous services in every cathedral in Wales last month. The services at all six of Wales’ cathedrals marked twenty years since the ordination of Wales’ first women priests. The anniversary came just weeks ahead of the latest milestone in women’s ministry in Wales - the consecration of the first woman bishop, Bishop Joanna Penberthy, as Bishop of St David’s Diocese. History was made on 11th January 1997, when every cathedral in Wales held their first ordination service for women priests. Sixty-one women were ordained on that day with many of them participating in the services on 7thJanuary. The idea for a simultaneous celebration was first put forward by the St Deiniol’s Group, an informal group of senior lay and ordained women from across the Church in Wales, whose members in each diocese have been involved in the planning. Peggy Jackson, Archdeacon of Llandaff, who convenes the group, said, “The Church in Wales has every reason to celebrate and be grateful for the ministry of these first women priests. They have brought rich and diverse gifts into the sacramental life of the Church, and have inspired many women since to offer themselves for public ministry. They have enabled the Church to represent, and therefore serve more effectively, the people of every community in Wales.” Canon Enid Morgan was among the first women ordained and gave the address at Bangor Cathedral during the anniversary service. She reflected on those events twenty years ago and brought them up to date with the continuing issues which face women in Ministry today.
“It was a day of great elation, but with other emotions mixed in. We had years of frustration behind us - I had spent twelve years as a deacon and we all had a sense of much energy wasted. Also,

eventually things seemed to happen very quickly. The Bill was passed the previous September so we hadn’t had much time to get used to the fact that it was actually going to happen. The shift from hope to expectation was a sharp one. There was also resistance from people who stayed away. Twenty years on we have every reason to celebrate and to look forward. A whole generation has grown up seeing women priests and their ministry as normal and we can start taking some things for granted. Indeed, when you see photos or film of groups of clergy with no women present, it looks odd and even rather absurd. Relics of an age gone past. That said, there is still a lot of work to be done. We don’t have many women in senior positions and there is still passive resistance amongst clergy and some women are reluctant to put their head above the parapet. It will take a little time to move from what law permits to a blossoming of the new potential. We would also like to see more younger women coming into ministry. I am delighted that we now have Bishop Joanna Penberthy and I am confident that Bishop Joanna, who was among those ordained at that first service, will be a role model to attract the next generation of women priests.”

John and I had forgotten how tiring it is to move into a new house. But we can honestly say it has been worth it because of the lovely reception we have both received. My grandma used to say, “count your blessings one by one”. Well I have certainly been able to do that as everyone we have met so far has been very good to us. As I sit here in January thinking about my New Year’s resolutions I reflect on the fact that the first couple of months of a year are seen as a time of new beginnings. Well it’s a new beginning not just for John and I but for all of us as we start our journey together. I recently visited Llanelwedd and Franksbridge Schools where I was much struck by the enthusiasm of the staff and children and I hope that from the very beginning of our new ministry we can generate the same level of enthusiasm in our benefice. Blessings,
Linda
A Warm Welcome

Our 'Book by Book' DVD-based study of the Bible continues in 2017. We have started to look at Peter's first letter. This is the same Peter who previously, just before Jesus' death, denied three times that he knew Jesus. Peter wrote this letter to strengthen & encourage the Church. We meet at 10 am on the second & fourth Tuesday of each month at Erw Lon, Cregrina LD1 5SF. We watch a 15-minute DVD that explains the relevance today of the Bible verses. We then have a chat and a time of prayer. If you don't have to rush off, we have tea, coffee & biscuits at about 11 am. We would love you to join us at one or more of the following sessions. Tues 14th February - 1 Peter chapters 1 & 2 Tues 28th February - 1 Peter chapters 2 & 3 Tues 14th March - 1 Peter chapters 3 & 4 Tues 28th March - 1 Peter chapter 4 Please phone Cherry on 01982 570702 for info.

we are celebrating the ‘Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord’ also known as ‘Candlemas’ – a day when the festive season of Christmas concludes. As part of our acknowledgement of that special occasion and as a mark of our shared mission we are holding a family non-Eucharistic ‘Candlemessy Christingle’ at the 10.00 service in Builth. The Christingle Service dates from the Moravian Church in the mid-eighteenth century and uses an orange, representing the world, a candle pushed into the centre of the orange, then lit, representing Jesus Christ as Light of the World. A red ribbon wrapped around the orange representing the blood of Christ and dried fruits on cocktail sticks pushed into the orange, representing the fruits of the earth and the four seasons. Please come along and try an updated version of this traditional service – an additional collection will be held for the work of the Dioceses ‘Faith in Families’ projects. With every blessing Father Neil

The Madonna of the Wall by Canon Chancellor Brian H Jones Canon Chancellor Brian Jones served curacies in Swansea before coming north to be rector of the New Radnor group. He returned to Swansea where he spent the rest of his ministry. He retired in 2000. This icon written on the separation wall in Bethlehem is by Ian Knowles. Mary is pregnant, her hand to her forehead showing great pain. Her eyes are large and strong, showing that she is the all-seeing mother, who understands all she sees. She is in solidarity with her children in the church and in the middle east and with the suffering people of the world. The three trees at her side are symbols of faith, hope and love. The lower part of the icon, shows a doorway, breaking through the wall to Jerusalem where we can see olive groves and the holy sepulchre. I have long been in contact with the Bethlehem bible college and hear from them every month. The college is the only one in the world that trains Arabs for the ordained and lay ministries, and has just launched degree courses on the internet. I quote from their current letter; ‘As a child the carefree nature is expressed by running around with your friends and playing games in the yard. For a large number of Palestinian children, this is not their reality. Many of these moments of normalcy are crushed by violence like night-raids, tear-gas, harassment, even arrest and detainment. These children grow up under the weight of the Israeli occupation, and their development is greatly affected by this ongoing violence.” For families, any movement outside the city of Bethlehem – to Jerusalem – to hospitals – and all the other normal activity, has to be through the wall. The iconographer’s official title for the icon is ‘Our Lady Who Brings Down Walls’. As we who have celebrated the birth of the Christ-child who had to flee from the city of Bethlehem look forward to a new year, so we pray for those who live there. We pray that the peace of the Holy Child may be theirs, and that the Madonna of the Wall may bring love, joy and hope to that besieged city.

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All
Painscastle Mother’s Union
2016 has passed so quickly and Christmastide and Epiphany’s treasured time passed with equal rapidity. Naturally, a big thank-you for the thoughts, prayers and work of all within our flock that helped created joyous, warm and beautiful churches during the Christmas season. We have welcomed many who wished to share their spiritual journey with us at this wonderful time of the year. Every blessing for a healthy and peaceful 2017! A Happy New Year to you and those you love! Together, may we continue to find much joy in our spiritual journeying with Christ. February is a month of transition. On the first Sunday of the month, we celebrate the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple at his tender age of forty days. This celebration also includes an acknowledgement of the visit of Mary to the Temple to be purified after childbirth in accordance with Jewish custom. ‘Candlemas’ may also be seen as a closing of the glorious festival of light that is the Christmas and Epiphany Season. Ash Wednesday falls on the 1st of March and so, during the remaining days of February following Candlemas, we turn our attention toward the dark days of Lent. In this time between the two emotional periods of Christmas/ Epiphany and Lent/Easter, it is well to recognise that the two events of the birth and passion of the life of Jesus are united elements in the single event that is the Incarnation of our Lord God. The Christ was born to live and die for us. Ponder on this and already our faith will begin to deepen in preparation for the cleansing and reflection that is our Lenten journey. (Officially, we celebrate St David on the 28th February this year but there is something poignant and special to carry his support with you as Lent begins on the following day; his usual day. Our heritage and land help to make us who we are and form part of our individual journeys with Christ throughout Lent and always.)
Please join us on 7th February 2017 for a talk on ‘Becoming a Vicar’ by Father Paul.

LLANBEDR CHURCH It was lovely to see so many people in Church on Christmas Eve and the Church and Churchyard were beautifully decorated. We would really appreciate it if the Christmas wreaths on the graves could be removed, by the end of February at the latest, so that the grass can be cut for Easter. If anyone has difficulty in getting there to remove wreaths, please phone either Ruby on 01982 560616 or Sue on 01497 851651. Thank you.

Irfon and Wye Ministry Area Irfon Valley, Blaenau Irfon and Upper Wye Services for February
Dear Friends Happy New Year! I do hope that the New Year has started with some promise and positive ideas for the future. It is difficult to be positive in this weather but I have started to make the most of every ray of sunshine. As we come into a new year we also start to think about what we are going to do in the months that stretch ahead. Some of us will have made resolutions whilst others are thinking long term. I have done both, my resolutions are going ok so far but the long-term plans are really making me feel positive. As a group, we have the opportunity to look sensibly at our churches and see what they can offer. Most of us have come to terms with the fact that this may mean change. Change is not always bad and does not always mean doing away with something but can mean adding more. This year is a year of positive change and reaching out to those who as yet do not know us. God’s Word will be available to all. One unhappy note is that Caerwnon Park Songs of Praise is on hold for a while as people have not been attending. I hope and pray that this is a temporary situation. Love and blessings
