Peace on Earth

by Alan Jevons One of the songs that used to be popular at this time of year is that old crooner from Bing Crosby "Have yourself a merry little Christmas, let your heart be light. From now on your troubles will be out of sight.". If we’re honest, this message of peace and goodwill that Christmas engenders can at times feel very shallow. The nearest the Irish rock band U2 got to a Christmas record was a song called "Peace on Earth". It talks about the huge difference between the way we wish things were and what actually happens in reality. The song talks about a mother who cries for peace on earth ... "She never got to say goodbye, to see the colour in his eyes, now he's in the dirt, that's peace on earth." And then think over the events of this last year ... those lives which have been lost this past year as a result of war or terrorism. 2017, as I write, has so far seen 1039 attacks and 6,657 fatalities as a result of terrorism around out world. Will Christmas this year change all this? I don't want to be a kill joy. There is indeed I believe a wonder and a magic to Christmas. But this is a wonder and a magic which confronts the reality of the way things are. It is a wonder and a magic which should change us and perhaps stimulate us into changing the way we live our lives and the way our world organises itself. If not then the Christmas message will indeed be pure sentimentality and, as U2 sing, "hope and history won't rhyme." There is that often-quoted story from George Macleod, a minister working in a rough area of Glasgow. He tells the tale of a stained-glass window in his Church which had the message "Glory to God in the highest" underneath a picture of the nativity. One night a local youth threw a stone through the window and knocked out the "e" in "highest". George Macleod said that the message now read "Glory to God in the high st." ... and he felt this was a more appropriate message than the original. If we cannot make this connection then the Christmas hope will probably fade away just as fast as the words of sentimental Christmas songs ... and we will be right to ask, "What's it worth?

The reality is that the joy of Christmas is always in stark contrast to the events which are happening in the world at the same time. The wonder of Christmas, the incarnation, is that God comes to us where we are. And we as Christians can never retreat into a comfortable and selfish world of our own, battening up the hatches. God cannot be found apart from the world's sorrows, only within them, but the glory is that God shares his life within that sorrow and wants it to be the place of new life.

Dear Friends,

I wonder whether you are one of those people who like or hate Christmas. In my experience people view Christmas a bit like marmite. You either love it or hate it. Yet there are understandable reasons why we might find Christmas difficult; perhaps we find it too commercialised, emptied of its true meaning, or maybe there are too many reminders of people no longer with us, or perhaps it’s the loss of childhood innocence. However, I’ve always found Christmas a very moving time of the year. The story of Christmas is rich with meaning and recalls the joy and anxiety of families anticipating the birth of a child. It also recalls worries about money and finding ways of navigating family relationships as well as navigating the advice and expectation of others.

This is a useful source of information on church services and community events and offers resources and support in areas such as prayer and Bible study. Colwyn Benefice’s Facebook page can be accessed from this website.

The incredible and wonderful thing I have always witnessed has been the way that people are always ready to help in whatever way they can with grace and generosity so that the experiences of families around a birth are profound and resonate with the birth of Jesus. At Christmas, we remember that God comes to us as a frail human baby, asking for welcome, help, care and nurture. Perhaps we get turned off by Christmas because we can no longer see how it relates to our lives; perhaps it feels so closely associated with ‘young families’, perhaps we are left thinking that that Christmas ‘is for Children’. Well yes, in so far as it challenges us to welcome the vulnerable, the stranger and the disturber of our status quo. Yet it is so much more, this call to care and support the vulnerable and anywhere we see new life emerging, is an invitation to get involved, to do all that is necessary to enable the expansiveness of life to be born in our world. So, may you find yourself visited by and a visitor to the God who is born amid frailty this Christmas. Christmas Blessings to you all.

Linda

Dear All, Advent and the Christmas Season

acceptance of the secular world of the birth of Emmanuel who is God with us. The three men feel the influence of heaven as they follow the star to the birth – place. Theirs is also a journey based on intellect and human initiative – their homage displays an acceptance that God is the only true sovereign over us all. The Magi have followed his will to announce to the world the reign of his Son; Jesus, Emmanuel, the Prince of Peace.

are here. Once more we may rejoice! 2000 years ago the coming of Emmanuel who is God with us, united heaven and earth in a bond never to be broken for all eternity. Enjoy the story as heaven overflows with the love of God in preparation for the great climax of the birth of the Holy Child in Bethlehem. Let it fill your hearts as you revel in the images of the angels appearing to the shepherds and the wise men travelling by the guidance of the star through heat, cold and dust for many months just to pay homage to the physical radiance of God now present in the babe who will change the world. Think of Mary’s wonderful and gracious acquiescence as the angel tells her that she is God’s chosen one and how she rushes with excitement to Elizabeth within whose womb John the Baptist responds by leaping with joy as his Saviour draws near. Remember Joseph’s loyalty and the visitation of angels in his dreams to ensure the safety of the baby Jesus. Heaven was showering the earth with signs and wonders and the very spirit of the world was responding by lifting people’s hearts in preparation for the birth of our Lord.

The scene is already set for the fulfilment of the Passion some thirty years later. It is worth remembering that the story of the incarnation is a complete and whole event in the history of our world - from our Saviour’s birth until his death and resurrection. The life of Jesus demonstrates that earthly suffering and heavenly bliss are close companions and he gives not as the world gives. We may not understand this. Sometimes we must simply let our hearts tell the story. Let nothing deflect us from the joy of Christmas! But let the joy make a bed of compassion in our hearts for all people for whom sorrow is never far away. Our constant prayer must be for the ongoing and eternal peace of Christ for all people. The Blessings of the Christ – Child be with you and those you love this Christmas, the New Year and always!

Most of all, remember that the story is true! How can you resist the invitation to see the world in a new light – the Light that never dies. All our earthly troubles may then be seen as the restless symptoms of a fast-changing world that is searching for a new identity of increased unity and fellowship. If we allow this new perspective to become a reality, then all the fear and danger will be balanced by an increased peace and goodwill to all people.

Father Paul. XX

Carry the image of the new- born baby, radiant with light and throwing his golden beams into the stable. Think on this and we will always be carrying a prayer with us for those we love and for those whose Christmas may be one of pain and sorrow. Irfon and Wye Ministry Area Irfon Valley, Blaenau Irfon and Upper Wye Dear Friends

Services for December

Christmas has crept up on us yet again. There always seems to be so much to do and the list of tasks seems to get bigger each year. let us not forget that Christmas is actually a Christian festival where we celebrate the birth of Jesus, God's son. It is not the 'holidays' or any other secular name that has been attached to it. It is Christ's Mass. In remembering this we must spare a thought for all who are suffering this year. So many are sick, homeless or missing loved ones. In our own Ministry Area we draw to mind the terrible tragedy in Llangammarch. Please let us all pray for everyone affected by this. Family is so important, and this time of year can make us think of those we have and those we have lost. Please be assured of my prayers for you at this Christmas time and I wish you every happiness and peace for the season and the year ahead. Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! Love and blessings

We say a fond farewell to our Editor. I am sure readers of Signposts would wish to join me in thanking Abi Hook for her many years of dedicated service to the Editorship of this and other much-loved Parish publications. Since I first met Abi some 16 years ago she has always been putting her desk-top publishing skills to use in something or another. How lucky we are that she has felt drawn to use her talents to such good effect. I am also grateful that she has taken such pains to show me the ropes with her own particular brand of precision and enduring patience. It will doubtless be some time before I can match her in either the editing or the patience department, but I am hoping she will be on hand to support me. Abi has decided to pursue other interests but hopefully will continue to be a Signposts reader! We wish Abi all the best in her future pursuits and hope that they will be as fruitful as this has been! Adeline

Christ child of Bethlehem, our dayspring and our dawn. We turn to you when we fear the dark and all around us weep. We pray you greet us with our shining light that we may spread your warm embrace and kindle the hope of Christmas in all whose lives remain in shadow. Come again Lord Jesus and be our strength O Lord, our hope and our salvation. Amen.

Just Giving…….. The tragic fire which has devastated a local family in Llangammarch Wells is no doubt pressing on many of us. Thankfully a local couple launched a page on “Just Giving” in an effort to ease the financial burden on a distraught family. If you would like to donate, the address below leads straight to the page.
