New Years Resolutions By Archbishop ++John In his enthronement address, Archbishop John asked the Church to take on some ‘new year resolutions’. With his kind permission we share some of his words here. Let our churches resolve to face down the caricature of being an institution, focused on simply surviving and being against things. Let churches and their charities, proudly affirm caring, loving and openhanded initiatives which, often in partnership with others, they are already taking; supporting and affirming needy communities and people, for example through family centres, food-banks, night-shelters, homelessness projects, affordable housing initiatives, in chaplaincies and schools, in towns and cities through the work of street-pastors, through aid agencies and individual churches rebuilding broken and struggling communities in far-flung destitute places, and in many other ways. Often the work goes unseen, as does a remarkable amount ordinary but supportive community engagement at home. But, in such ways what churches say they believe takes flesh, has real meaning, and the kingdom comes. Christians must be ready, not afraid or ashamed to say so and explain so. That should become part of what I believe has to be a commitment to an overdue drive to rehabilitate and refresh how we explain our Gospel message, helping others really grasp that it’s not simply about going to church. And among those others, let all our churches resolve to share with me and act upon an active and deep concern for witness to the young. So many of them so evidently have a deep and clearlyarticulated sense of moral right. They are keenly aware of the need for social and economic justice, the stewardship of creation, and equality of opportunity; they are equally aware of the need for a society free from any form of prejudice rooted in anything which is part of the individual identity, gender, race, origin, religion or orientation of anyone.
Search for magazine online on Facebook
Interestingly, many of them have a deep admiration for many ideals actually to be found in scripture - they would probably give Job a high-five or even an affirming hug; they would encourage the Colossians to clothe themselves with that overcoat of blood-red love; they would be blown away by the radical teachings of Jesus, the Good Shepherd - and, if they could, would almost certainly have a selfie taken with him! Perhaps, however, they don’t associate our sometimes-struggling churches with these ideals, or hear those churches saying a clear enough ‘hear hear’ to them. Lastly on resolutions, and beyond churches and religion, can we not all simply resolve, in our increasingly divided, bewildered, unbalanced and uneven society, to be clothed with goodness, to call to account and encourage the reform of individuals, regimes and entities which deliberately or by stealth, neglect and carelessness collude in oppressing minorities, burdening the poor and robbing individuals of their dignity? Nothing churchy or exclusively religious about that either … I hope that you can agree, that today and many of its words have something to say to each one of us wherever we may be in relation to religion and matters of faith, something with which to challenge each one of us. But please excuse me from expressing one particular hope for those of you for whom the church is actually a bit of a turn-off, even a bit weird, or just a bit of an unknown quantity? My hope is that today might just help you to grasp a little more of the truth what the gospel and the church really are about. I might even dare to hope that you could think about engaging with them in some way and find a welcome for any fresh insights or challenges which you might bring to us.

Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn Dear Friends,
Services for February Services for Year B
As you can see from our services there is to be a Ministry Area Holy Communion with the imposition of ashes at 7pm at St David’s Church, Cregrina. Everyone is welcome.
4th February Creation Sunday 10.00 Llansantffraed Holy Communion JO 18.00 Glascwm Village Service MJ Readings: Proverbs 8:1, 22-31; Psalm 104:24-35; Colossians 1:15-20; John 1:1-14 Linda’s day off
The imposition of ashes is a solemn ritual that signals the beginning of the holy season of Lent. The ceremony is distinctive and there is no other liturgical action like it throughout the entire church year.
11th February Transfiguration Sunday 09.30 Cregrina Holy Communion LW 11.15 Llanelwedd Worship4All ET/CJ/ 11.15 Rhulen Holy Communion LW Readings: 2 Kings 2:1-12; Psalm 50:1-6; 2 Corinthians 4:3-6; Mark 9:2-9
The ashes come from the palms handed out at previous Palm Sunday services which are collect, burned and then crushed into a fine, sooty powder and placed into bowls. They are mixed with oil or water and then blessed by the priest during the Ash Wednesday Holy Communion service after the short sermon. Then, in a Communionlike procession, people are invited to come forward, and the ashes are applied to each person’s forehead in the shape of a cross as the minister says ‘Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ’. These words come from Genesis 3:19 and Mark 1:15.
18th February Lent 1 09.30 Llanfaredd Holy Communion LW 10.00 Llansantffraed Morning Prayer DD 11.15 Glascwm Holy Communion JO Readings: Genesis 9:8-17; Psalm 25:1-10; 1 Peter 3:18-22; Mark 1:9-15 25th February Lent 2 09.30 Bettws Holy Communion 09.30 Cregrina Village Service 11.15 Llanelwedd Holy Communion • • •

Ashes symbolize two things. Firstly, they are equivalent to dust, for example in the Old Testament Abraham told God, “I am but dust and ashes” (Genesis 18:27), a reference to his human mortality. Secondly ashes are used to remind ourselves of our own impending deaths. Death may come sooner, or it may come later, but it will surely come. Therefore, we need to be prepared and the time to prepare for death is now and the way to prepare for it is to live according to God’s ways.
LW CJ JO

When the prophet Daniel shamefacedly clothed himself in sackcloth and ashes, they were a sign of his people’s contrition for their rebellion, wickedness and treachery against God (Daniel 9:3). When Jonah warned the Ninevites that God planned to destroy their city because of their corruption and depravity, the people covered themselves with sackcloth and ashes as a sign of their intention to turn from their evil ways (Jonah 3:6,10).
Upcoming Meetings: Rota Group, Monday 5th, 7pm at the Rectory Benefice Council Meeting, Monday 12th, 7pm at Hundred House Hall in the downstairs room. •
So, ashes are a plea to God for mercy and compassion, pardon and forgiveness. When we come forward to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, what we are saying is that we are sorry for our sins, and that we want to use the season of Lent to correct our faults, purify our hearts, control our desires and grow in holiness so we will be prepared to celebrate Easter with great joy.

Pilgrims Course 2018 The Lord’s Supper This second book in the Grow Stage explores in greater depth how Christians know and worship God. Its six sessions reveal the reasons why The Eucharist is celebrated as a memorial of Christ’s saving passion and stands at the very heart of Christian worship. The course will take place in the Christian Centre for Rural Wales, on the Royal Welsh Showground, top entrance over the trophy room, Glamorgan Hall, Builth Wells LD2 3SY.

Psalm 51 Friends, (NRSV) Dear Prayer for andare Pardon I wonder Cleansing whether you hate it. Yet there are
A Prayer for Ash Wednesday
The darkness asks us questions. You are out there and we do not see. You invite us into the night, the stillness, the loneliness, the desert place.
1
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
We cannot see our shadow; the cold damp of unknowing rises up from beneath our feet.
3
For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. 5 Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me.
We tread cautiously, tentatively. We are afraid, afraid of ghosts haunting us with spectres of guilt and shame. We would like to run back, reach the river bank, swim the Jordan, sit in the sun by the sea, mending our nets. But you have brought us here – with no bread.
6
You desire truth in the inward being;[a] therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
When we look we can see only ourselves, our darkness. When we read, it is invisible words which cannot be grasped, thoughts we cannot clutch, hope we cannot capture.
10
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right[b] spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing[c] spirit.
Yet the wild honey remains a taste in our mouth, a memory for a new day.
13
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance.
Why have you brought us here? What miracle will you perform for us? The darkness sighs around us, dense with your unseen presence, close to our breathing, close to our breathing.
15
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you have no delight in sacrifice; if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased. 17 The sacrifice acceptable to God[d] is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
O darkness, enlighten us, embrace us with your invisible love. Let us see your glory in the ashes. Take us by the hand that we may trust the darkness. Minister to us by your Spirit that we may not be afraid.
18
Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, 19 then you will delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar
Jesus, keep the beasts away. Amen William R. G. Loader, Emeritus Professor of New Testament, Murdoch University, (1999).
