Confirmation Capers I spotted the advertisement you will see on page 4 for confirmation classes and could not help thinking back to my own confirmation. The Service of Confirmation, the Church in Wales Website states, ‘follows a period of preparation in an informal group with others, where a priest or lay person introduces various aspects of the Christian faith’. It concludes, ‘Preparation sessions should be fun and stimulating and you will be able to ask difficult questions and engage in discussion’. Well looking back, my own experiences could not be described as ‘fun’, nor did I feel able to ask difficult questions or engage in discussion. It was the early 1980’s, The classes were very formal and we seven female choristers, all eleven or twelve years old gathered to hear our Vicar’s views on various topics. It began with the promise that more than one missed session would result in us failing to be confirmed. Choristers, in his opinion, often failed to “grasp the true meaning of sacraments” due to getting carried away with “all that singing”. Fortunately, his outbursts and mini-lectures on the apparent evils of choristers were punctuated by his regular cigarette breaks. We were introduced to the ACTS pattern for prayer (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication) and as homework required to learn by heart a chosen prayer to fulfil each letter. On the following session we were to read it aloud for his approval. We were also required to select or write a private prayer to call to mind on approaching the alter. This had to be written, placed in an envelope and left behind for him to read and judge at his leisure. Leaving this until the last minute, as I have always done with homework, I quickly scribbled a couple of verses from a favourite hymn in the car on the way to the vicarage.

“Not original” he scolded, “but I suppose I should expect nothing less from a chorister”. The value of this experience, though lost on my 11-year-old self, has become clearer in the intervening years. Those ordinary events which can unsettle us, beginning with the teenage upheavals of exam-taking and job-seeking to the more recent challenges of parenthood, their mystery has been revealed. In truth, at every milestone which served to unsettle me, those prayers learned by heart and the verses from that hymn have formed an emotional bolster on which to recline. Simple words are so often the easiest to call to mind and it was only much later that I truly felt my place in the Church family. Let us join together with the confirmation candidates on 8th July and renew our vows, welcoming them into our family. And on my approach to the alter, my heart will sing
How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds In a believer's ear! It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole, And calms the troubled breast; 'Tis manna to the hungry soul, And to the weary rest. Not original, but apparently you should expect nothing less from a chorister!

Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn
Dear Friends,
At 10.00 on the 6th May we celebrate with a Rogation Service at Llansantffraed. This service is where we ask God’s blessing on all farmers, their families, animals, farmhouses, farmyards and buildings. After a short Communion service in church we all process out to see God’s beautiful creation of hills and fields, we then look to the fields and ask God’s blessing on the land which provides the flocks with food and drink. As we walk around we thank God for the companionship and variety of animals and birds and lastly, we thank God for all farmers, for their skills and hard work and their energy. We finish off the morning by sharing in refreshments and fellowship. So please come and join us. At 10.00 on the 20th May we have a Pentecost Benefice Service at Cregrina in which we remember the Holy Spirit descending on the Apostles. The name Pentecost was applied by the Church to the feast celebrating this event which is popularly known as Whitsunday. It ranks after Easter as the second greatest festival in the Church and historically was a secondary date for baptisms. The word Whitsunday is said to derive from the white robes worn by the newly baptised on that day. The descent of the Holy Spirit on to the Apostles marks the beginning of the Church as we know it and is seen and celebrated as the Church’s Birthday. Blessings to you all.
Linda

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All May gives us three festivals that form the climax of the Easter mystery; the Ascension of Our Lord on the 10th of the month, the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost on Sunday the 20th of the month and the great affirmation of the Most Holy Trinity a week later. The seven continuous weeks of Eastertide that have brought us to these three important festivals are always a profound time in our Christian year. Through the Gospels we are taken from the ecstatic joy of the Resurrection of Our Lord and introduced into an acceptance of seeing him leave us to ascend to his Father; thus, releasing his advocate, the Holy Spirit to live among us and within us. Now we may all carry the Christ who is born again in each one of us. This is the completion of the Incarnation that began at Advent. The importance of this time for Christians cannot be over emphasised; now the power of our Faith is in the world. The words of Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer that he delivers to them with such urgency and deliberation as his last address now manifests as an eternal reality:
