Chaplaincy on the Royal Welsh Showground The Chaplaincy team on the Royal Welsh Show Ground is there to respond to the needs of all visitors and staff. We offer the hand of fellowship to those of all faiths and none. Relying on the strength that our own faith brings, we seek at all times to help those who are in need of any kind. Our duty on the show ground is not to proselytise, but to be a welcoming, supporting body of people, under the one faith seeking to bring Pastoral Care where needed. We are based within the Christian Centre for Rural Wales Offices. In order to represent the Churches in Wales the Chaplains looks to Cytun the ecumenical organization which represents not only the Church in Wales but also all the churches in Wales. Archbishop John commented “as always, there will be a strong Christian presence at the Show with daily services, to which everyone is welcome, and a team of chaplains offering care and support to those who need it. The Show is the highlight of the year for our rural community as it is a valuable chance not just for them to showcase livestock and produce but to meet, socialise and share experiences. Our clergy who minister in rural areas know only too well how important that social element is as austerity, loss of public services, uncertainty over Brexit and increasing isolation take their toll on the mental health of farmers in particular. Our message to them is that we are here, we care and we want to help.” As chaplains we cover all of the thirty one events for 2018. On small events there may only be one or two chaplains volunteering. But you can always recognise us because our bright orange Jackets! Each event has a lead Chaplain who co-ordinates any situations that require additional support. Recently the Urdd required several Chaplains

(especially the ones from North Wales who are mostly Welsh speaking), whilst in the Royal Welsh Show we provide four chaplains a day who will take on duties in the main areas of activity within the event. We co-ordinate with activities and support the churches tents on some events. I find this volunteer work very rewarding because I am able to go alongside people and meet and talk with them in the context of their everyday lives. Events on the showground attract a wide mix of people from many walks of life. Conversations take place with exhibitions, trade stand personnel, security staff, general stall holders, judges and the whole eclectic array of show people. I am a chaplain in a team of ordained ministers and at the moment I am the only Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) in the Chaplains team. In addition to the Chaplains the Royal Welsh Show this year will have visiting Christian trained ‘street pastors’ coming up from Ebbw Vale. They will be volunteering in the town of Builth Wells from 9.30pm to 3.30am handing out flip flops, bottles of water and generally just being alongside those show people who may need guidance to find their way back to their accommodation after a night out. A ‘green route’ will be marked out from the centre of Builth Wells over the bridge towards the showground onward to camp sites and the young people’s village. With so many people visiting the area a new initiative around people’s safety has evolved, which the churches are playing a role in. Janet Day

On the 8th July there is to be a Benefice Confirmation Service with John Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Swansea and Brecon. This 11.15 service at St Matthew’s Llanelwedd will be a joyous celebration for Chloe, Kegan, Rhys and Vicky-Lynn as they acknowledge their belief and faith in our Lord and Saviour and receive their first Holy Communion. Confirmation is standing up for what we believe, continues what was begun at Baptism (Christening) and celebrates the presence and work of the Holy Spirit within us. It also marks full membership of the Church and makes us Christ’s ambassadors – God’s co-workers in the world. Confirmation is not just for those who are still in school, it is for anyone from the age of 11 years to 111 years. If you are not Baptized (Christened), it doesn’t matter as you can be Baptized (Christened) at the same time. July and August are a time for rest and relaxation for yourselves, your children and your families. My prayer for you all is that you will all have time to enjoy yourselves, to relax and recharge your batteries and no matter where you go, or what you do, may God be with you. Blessings to you all.

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All, Summer is passing quickly and as we settle further into the Trinity Season may we continue to experience a profound sense of spirituality that does not depend totally upon the emotionally charged response that the first half of the year has brought. Let the Summer be the time to experience a sacramental view of all things. As we absorb nature’s greenery, from the shrubbery and trees in the gardens to the stretching, working fields and distant beacons, we may recognise that all created things move with a sparkling residue of life within all the sunlit particles of the air. Respond to this ongoing creation around you with a breath of release that places you into God’s care. Summer is a time for the heart; for learning the lesson of abundance, if you cannot feel the life of God’s creation at her fullest then you cannot live it. This time of the Christian year is the time for letting Christ naturally lift your heart towards the place where all meaning is found through him. Simply worship him, love him and rest in him. Love, as a unifying factor, may provide us with insights into the lives of the major Saints that have their feast days this month; Thomas on the 3rd, Benedict on the 11th and James (The Greater) on the 25th . Thomas was so filled with love for Jesus that he was frightened to believe the wonderful news of his resurrection until he saw Jesus for himself. When he did encounter Jesus, Thomas did not waste time putting his hands into the wounds of Jesus but simply said the ultimate profession of faith, “My Lord and my God.” This speaks of so much love. Benedict, the founder of western monasticism, at the beginning of his Rule says quite simply, “ This is advice from a father who loves you.” The Rule speaks much of obedience but all the teaching to the monks is given within this invocation of love. James is the first Apostle to be martyred; the first of them to follow the way to death for love of his Lord. (Acts 12:1-2); We also need to love ourselves as God loves us. August brings us a natural caesura in the flow of the year. This may allow our
holiday period to be a time to relax and nurture the sometimes neglected core that is obscured by the labels that we accumulate around ourselves - boss, employee, husband, wife, mum, dad, carer….. you may be well acquainted with the perceived roles and titles you carry in life. The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord on the sixth of August emphasises the clarity of connecting with the neglected divine part of ourselves and serves to reaffirm the strength of our relationship with Jesus. Within the mystery of the story, the transfiguration of Jesus is presenting a simple truth that this is revelation of Jesus as he truly is, the Son of God. At this awesome moment for Peter, James and John, nothing of the nature of Jesus is hidden from them and his kinship with God is made apparent. This is a dramatic mingling of the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ that the disciples find difficult to comprehend, yet if Jesus is fully human and a model of the perfected humanity that we aspire toward - then may we infer that if we stand before God as we truly are – as His beloved children, then may we also may be transfigured? We all owe ourselves an opportunity to ‘ unstring the bow’ and I hope you will all find the time to do this. True refreshment may be found if we bring back to our ongoing responsibilities all the insights that come to us in these times of true relaxation. May we all find refreshment and renewal in Christ. Love him as he loves you and, through this, be drawn into his love for all people so that you will be counted among the Saints in glory. God Bless. Father Paul. XX .

Heavenly Choir Gains New Talent – A personal tribute Some of our readers were saddened earlier this year by the deaths of Timothy Morgan and Hazel Gedge. Timothy Morgan passed away suddenly on February 5th at his home in Ludgrove, Berkshire. A former student of Brecon High, and for the 6th form, Builth Wells High School, Tim was a member of Brecon Cathedral Choir and received tutelage from Hazel Gedge. He held the position of Acting Assistant Organist at the Cathedral before departing to pursue his studies at Selwyn College Cambridge. A flourishing teaching career lead to his final appointment of Director of Music at Ludgrove School in Berkshire. Those who knew him mourn the loss of a fantastically talented teacher and musician and composer, who captivated us with his bright smile and good humour. Tim’s packed funeral took place in the Cathedral on 26th February and the Choir formed for the occasion consisted of some of the many friends who were fortunate enough to know this gentle man. No doubt he is now set to some heavenly purpose, but his gifts will never be forgotten by those who knew him. Hazel Gedge, Tim’s life-long friend, teacher and mentor, died on 23 February, aged 80. For more than 40 years, she and her late husband, David (who died in 2016), ensured that “Brecon Cathedral was regularly supplied with music of a quality that far surpassed what might reasonably have been expected” as a personal tribute in the Church Times puts it so perfectly. (available on-line – 6 April 2018). David and Hazel touched the lives of so many musicians and singers, and they leave behind an incalculable legacy of both musicianship and love. In the words of Samuel Wesley from the Anthem which made an appearance at both funerals, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee”.

A prayer for the summer Lord Jesus, you travelled with the two disciples after the resurrection and set their hearts on fire with your grace. Travel also with us and with our visitors over the coming months. Gladden our hearts with your presence. We are pilgrims here on this earth, seeking the citizenship which is in heaven. During our journey surround us with your holy angels and keep us safe from seen and unseen dangers. Help us to see the beauty of creation and to comprehend the wonder of your truth in all things. We place ourselves in your hands. Let our Ministry Area be a place of relaxation, joy, love, peace and safety. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
