All of that Green! For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life – John 3.16 I tread on dangerous ground. The very heart of why we gather, what we think and believe, is embodied in Jesus special words. They are succinct, clear, we can add little or nothing and they are hallowed by repetition and in many cases hammered into our subconsciousness by singing. Those of us without a wider musical experience may not grasp or acknowledge the parallel setting by Goss: “O Saviour of the world who by thy cross and precious blood hast redeemed us all”, words taken from a collect for the visitation of the sick, yet hardly significantly altered from the Gospel. We remain confronted by this fundamental embodiment of our Christian thought and it is entirely what we are all about. All this may be taken for granted and all I’m doing is underlying its fond familiarity and there is little I would presume to do or say would alter any of that. What perhaps I might do however is draw our attention to Pauls words: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart. Where is the wise man: where is the scribe: where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” Let me go on: “For the Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom”. (1 Corinthians 1) I am constantly amazed at the Gospel’s topsyturviness. Just when we think we’ve grasped the point, the Gospel turns things upside-down.

Between the Incarnation and crucifixion, we become well-rehearsed in God’s upside-down theology. God comes not as a king, with dazzling robes or kingly authority – but as the ‘king of the Jews’ who is crucified. Between these events the Jews demanded sign after sign. Jesus deflected their blows; “I’ve carried out this miracle – but don’t let on! No, I’ve not come on a warrior’s charger – I enter Jerusalem on a donkey. I cure you, I cure your son and your daughter, and I don’t need to see the child who is now whole. It’s your faith that has made you whole – it’s your faith that has turned things around”. For me one of the most powerful signs and demonstrations of brilliance of God’s strange logic was Jesus’ exchange with Peter on the beach after the resurrection. Jesus quietly asks Peter; “Do you love me more than these” to which Peter replies, “Lord you know that I do” and Jesus murmurs back, “Feed my sheep”. The question follows twice more and each time the increasingly perplexed Peter confirms; “Yes Lord – you know I love you”. Jesus commissioned the man who had denied him three times in the trial chamber to lead his whole body of followers. If he can do that with Peter, then what can he do with us? Builth Ministry Area - Colwyn
Dear Friends,
Events and Meetings for September and October: ALL WELCOME
As we continue to celebrate our harvest festivals we remember with thanks all those who grow crops, rear lambs and store cattle to feed us throughout the year. As our farmers signs say, they are ‘feeding a nation’ and ‘enhancing the environment.’ These signs made me think that what the farmers do are the things that Jesus asks us all to do. To feed people and to look at the birds of the air and the ‘lilies of the fields’. In Matthew 6:26-33 we are asked not to worry about what we eat and drink and wear. Often, we set our sights too low. We are spiritual beings and therefore in God’s eyes we are not measured by what we have, but by who we are. We are God’s children and he loves us. The lilies of the field are the poppies and the scarlet anemones. They may only live a short while, but their beauty is worth noticing. God cares for them and if he cares for them how much more does he care for us. It is only when we are in harmony with God that we can be in true harmony with the world around us. We have therefore to learn to live one day at a time, relax and enjoy the world we live in and we must trust God completely and seek His kingdom first; how else with any conviction can we sing ‘all is safely gathered in’? It would be lovely to see you all at one of our harvest services. Please see dates and times of services near you. On 26th October we as a Benefice are having a fund-raising concert. Funds raised through ticket sales and the raffle will be shared equally between Hope House and the Colwyn Benefice. This will be an amazing evening, starting at 7.30 pm at the Jubilee Hall, Llanelwedd. The Builth Ladies choir will be serenading us supported by Edw Valley Young Farmers as well as the children from our local schools. How blessed we are to have such talented people within our community who are willing to share their gifts with us. Blessings to you all.
Linda

Builth Ministry Area – Buallt Dear friends, This month we have an Episcopal Visitation in our Deanery. We gather to listen to the Archbishops words as he challenges us upon the theme of ‘Evangelism’ in his Visitation address he will tell us that he is instructing us to place Evangelism front and centre in all that we do. The first substantive item on any Benefice Council Agenda is now to be Evangelism. This return to one of the core principles of the churches work, is a welcome breath of fresh air, and represents a new wind of change that is beginning to blow across the Church in Wales. No longer will we be content to manage decline – instead we will now work for renewal. With every blessing Fr. Neil
Christmas Cards Christmas Cards are on sale to raise funds to purchase new banners for St. Mary’s – they will be available after each service in Builth. They feature a wide variety of religious designs and are competitively priced. Please do think of buying from us before you go elsewhere!
Bible Sunday….. th
On 28 October (Bible Sunday) all lectors (those who read in church) from across the churches in the group are invited to gather in St. Mary’s for the 09.30 Eucharist to re-commit themselves to that ministry and allow us to pray for them. This small act allows us both to thank them and to remind ourselves that that scripture is at the heart of our worship, and our ministry. ] This month’s visiting preacher St. Mary’s in Builth has developed a ‘Visiting Preacher’ series in which on the third Sunday of the month we invite a guest to break open God’s word for us in the 09.30 Sung Eucharist. This month we are delighted to have our Diocesan Honorary Assistant Bishop, the Rt. Revd. John Oliver, to be joining us to preach and join in fellowship afterwards.

This takes place at the Civic Carol Service in December – tickets at £1 each or £5 a book are available from any member of every congregation. There are fantastic prizes … please support!

Dear All, October is indeed a month of change and Autumn is now with us. Whatever the weather, let us carry the warmth of the sun’s goodness in our hearts throughout the winter months as we remember that it is the warmth of the Son’s goodness that lies at the heart of all creation. Thus, through our Lord, we thank his Father for the season of growth with our continuing celebrations of Harvest.

More than this, we accept that we are God’s children and through responding to his love we offer him lives of grace that that are also part of his harvest for the world. As we decorate our churches, we may remind ourselves that Church is not just a place to which we go, it is also a place that we hold inside ourselves and for each other. An intrinsic part of our relationship with Christ is the ongoing questioning of our hearts through which we may discern his will for us. How does Christ speak to you as an individual through your unique past, present and future? How may he help with the particular problems that are yours alone and those that we all have in common? At times this may not be pleasant as it involves our anger, disappointments and heartbreak alongside the graces of our successes and understanding.

Understanding readily turns into compassion and as we naturally share so much with each other, this helps to build us as communities of faith. This is the true Church of Christ – one compassionate body resting in the comfort of the God who suffered to be with us – I can find no other truth more glorious and powerful than this. This is what we celebrate in our Parish Churches and the Holy Spirit never tires from building this Church and deepening God’s love in Christ for all of us, individually and together.

A Hobbit, A Wardrobe and A Great War’ pervasive mood of bitter disillusionment, cynicism and disenchantment that followed World War One, which Lewis himself felt for a long while, the achievement of Tolkien and Lewis was to reintroduce into the popular imagination a Christian vision of hope. But this hope did not deny the realities of life. In The Lord of the Rings there is great sobriety about the prospects of final victory in the present life, as in the words of Galadriel: “Through the ages of the world we have fought the long defeat.” The fantasies of ‘Middle Earth’ and ‘Narnia’ do not represent a flight from reality, but rather a return to the real world, which, for Tolkien and Lewis, had a mythical and heroic quality. Even in the dark bitterness and cynicism that followed the war, these two great authors produced stories imbued with grace inspired by heroism and genuine consolation. I encourage you to watch this documentary and re-introduce yourselves to Tolkien and Lewis, whose works can help us re-imagine reality and re-engage with the deeper, enchanted meaning of life. If you would like to read the book, it is published by Thomas Nelson and available from booksellers and in electronic format. Revd Canon Dewi Roberts
REVIEW: A new documentary film series, ‘A Hobbit, A Wardrobe and A Great War’, based on the book of the same title by Joseph Loconte, is to be released in the late autumn. It explores the friendship of the authors JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis and the impact of the Great War on their lives, their faith, and their imagination. For a generation of men and women the Great War brought the end of innocence, and the end of faith. Not so for these two insightful authors and friends. The Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers, survived the trenches and used the experience of the war to shape their Christian imagination. Tolkien created ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and Lewis the imaginative ‘Chronicles of Narnia’. These epic stories depicting the heroism and hardship of war might not have been created had the authors not experienced the heat of trench warfare. The film documentary recalls their time at Oxford University, and their mutual love of romantic and medieval literature. With the dire prospect of another world war, Tolkien and Lewis delve into their earlier experience of conflict as they inspire each other to compose their great works. With the
