Issue No 206
Many of you will have seen and heard various media reports over the past few months about the Ringing Remembers project. The idea is to recruit 1400 people to learn to be Bellringers, and ring on November 11th 2018, the 100th anniversary of the Armistice ending World War 1. 1400 Bellringers from across the world lost their lives during the WW1. Over the past 4 years Alan Regin, a ringer from Christ Church in Spitalfields, has documented the ringers who lost their lives and, where possible, these have been commemorated at their ‘local’ tower on the anniversary of their death. I personally have joined ringing at Clyro and Glasbury to remember two such soldiers. Further ringing is planned in Glasbury and Knighton. Alan Regin was awarded an MBE last year “for services to Campanalogy and its Heritage”. Alan has also been instrumental in getting a ring of bells, rung the traditional British way of ‘full circle ringing’,in St George’s Memorial Church Ypres to commemorate all the fallen. There are two Churches in our Ministry Area with bells rung full circle. Llandelio Graban have a peal of 3 bells which are rung occasionally for services and Builth Wells have a peal of 6 Bells rung regularly for Practice, Services, Weddings and other occasions. On November 11th we will be ringing the bells in Builth four times; for the

Magazine for the Builth Ministry Area November 2018 Remembrance Service and just after the 11am silence, then in line with National Remembrance at 12:30 when as many as possible of the bells of the UK will be ringing and again at 7:05 in line with the ‘Battle’s Over- a nations tribute’ (www brunopeek.co.uk) So, what is so appealing about ringing bells? (Excuse the pun) Bells have been rung full circle for over 400 years but their origin is much older. They have been used for celebration, warning of invasion and notifying parishioners of the imminent start of church services. In today’s secular society they remind people that the church is there, active and ready for them. I often remind Father Neil that his sermons are heard by the congregation, but the bells are heard by all. Bellringers are often secular today but many feel it is their duty to ring for service. They are over 5700 places with ringable peals of 4 or more bells in the world with all but 134 in the UK and the majority of those in England (168 in Wales and 27 in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon.) We have an eclectic band of ringers in Builth, ranging from teenagers to those us who are a bit older! New and returning ringers are always welcome to come along (please see page.6. for details), you don’t have to be strong or musical. Bellringing is very friendly, sociable and you can never stop learning and can visit some lovely places where you are always made welcome. David Childs, Tower Captain, St Mary’s, Builth Wells.

Dear Friends,
Events and Meetings for September and October: ALL WELCOME
Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet says, “Here’s rosemary, that’s for Remembrance. Pray you, love, remember.” November is a time of the year for remembering. On 2nd November this year we celebrate our Benefice All Souls Service at St Mary’s Church, Bettws, when we remember all those who have departed this life - not that we ever forget those whom we love - but it is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to remember them.

Sunday 11th is our Benefice Remembrance Service, held at St Mary’s Bettws. This year will mark 100 years since the Armistice Treaty was signed between first world war allies and Germany, bringing an end to war in western Europe. On that day people in Britain celebrated by pouring out onto the streets and gathering in large places. Church Bells were rung in towns and villages across the UK for the first time since the war began, both as a symbolic gesture and to let people know the war was over. Encouragement is being given for all churches to ring their bell or bells for 10 minutes to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. Though this was a joyous moment, for the allies at least, the devastating loss of life affected many families and communities in Britain and across the world. Thirty nations had declared war between 1914 and 1918. Many countries along with Great Britain sided with the allies, including France, Italy, Russia and the United States. The Ottoman Empire, AustriaHungary and Bulgaria supported Germany.

The phrase 'lest we forget' is thought to come from the poem "Recessional" by Rudyard Kipling. This poem was written for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and it was where Kipling was inspired by a Bible reading from Deuteronomy 6:12, which reads: "Then beware lest thou forget the Lord which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt". This poem itself doesn't touch upon remembering the fallen soldiers, but it has been adopted as part of Armistice Day traditions. During the act of Remembrance, the Ode of Remembrance is said:

Blessings to you all.

Builth Ministry Area - Erwood & Painscastle Dear All, We have shared in fellowship with each other and the land that we love at this sacred time of the year through our joyous celebrations of Harvest. Another year begins to draw to a close and once again we are mindful of how time is passing in our lives. So, indeed, November introduces a more sombre tone to our Christian year. This month is often known as the month of the dead; embodying the darkness before the dawn of Advent. Yet, within this, the memorials and celebrations of the month affirm the importance of coming to know fully the love of God that transcends time and space and even conquers death. The Feast of All Souls, on the second of the month, is a time when we come together for a Eucharist in St Teilo’s, Llandeilo Graban at 7.00pm to commemorate the lives of the faithful departed, many of whom we love and miss. This is an important celebration as the year begins to turn. We open our hearts to acknowledge the presence of our ancestors and others with whom we have walked with through the journey of life. Associated with this is All Saints Day, which we will be celebrating on Sunday the 4th of the month. The two celebrations are connected; the former celebrates the memories of our own family and the latter rejoices in the family of the Church whose footpaths have paved the way of faith to make it easier for us to follow and thus we may readily call upon their help and intercession for us. Remembrance Sunday, this year falling on Armistice Day itself - the eleventh of the month, reminds us that our capacity for noble sacrifice is an intrinsic part of our nature. At our very best, humankind is truly Christ-like. All these festivals show us that much of our life on earth is bound up with thoughts of heaven. To make sense of life and suffering, in our prayers we must hold on to the promise of eternal life that Jesus has promised for each one of us.

The Feast of Christ the King on Sunday the 25th is the glorious climax of the Christian year. Jesus the Christ is King of Heaven and Earth. He defined the true nature of kingship through uniting his divine nature with our human condition thus showing us that the true nature of all sovereignty and leadership involves serving humanity through an embrace of love for all people. His identification with our mortality, followed by his ultimate conquering of death and ascension, enabled him to sit at the right hand of God for all eternity and be our advocate in heaven for all time – our King who holds us with him - Christus Rex. May this thought dwell in your hearts for the beginning of Advent on the following Sunday, the 2nd of December as we celebrate the story of how Christ’s kingship begins; Emmanuel, who is God with us. The Father always draws us to him through faith and belief in his Son:

Music Review: CELTS Celtic multi-instrumentalist Fr Tim Ardouin and lead philharmonic/Celtic flautist, Leslie Sheills have recorded an album of self-composed music, songs and poetry about the Celtic church and saints. Fr Tim is based in our diocese on the Gower, whilst Leslie lives in nearby Swansea.
The Celtic way did not discriminate between men and women with regard to leadership, priesthood. Priests and monastics, male or female, were often married and mixed monasteries, where families lived out their Christian calling, were common. The Celts retained the tonsure of the Druids – probably the first Celtic Christian priests – who, unlike the Romans, kept the hair long and free at the back. The mystical Fourth Gospel (John) was the scripture of choice for the Celts and, unlike the Romans, experience of the Divine, be it through prayer, through nature, art, music, in the elements, gazing at the stars or riding the waves in coracles to wherever God leads, was more important than any kind of doctrinal formulae.
The album delivers a raw and natural sound, mixing atmospheric recordings taken in the wilder spots of Gower with Irish flutes and whistles, didgeridoo, guitars and bodhran. The sparse production is evocative of a liminality inherent in early Celtic Christianity, which was itself influenced by the early Jesus Movement and the contemplative style of the Desert Fathers/Mothers, both of whom it is likely the fledging church in Gower and South West Wales were in physical contact with.
Fr Tim said: “According to our Celtic foremothers and forefathers, heaven and earth are just three feet apart and far closer than that in a thin place. We hope that the music we are making now will be a thin place for people which, though evocative of the Celtic Way, will take them spiritually deeper than any sense of religion, history, ancestral hiraeth or romantic nostalgia, to communion with Christ, about whom all religion is merely modal response”.
When St Augustine came to these islands to ‘convert’ the wild people on the edge of the known world, as far as the Roman Church was aware, he found the Celts to the west and north of the Saxon kingdoms had an already wellestablished Christian church with their own bishops, priests and monastics. It was not until centuries of establishment of the Roman Church in England, that the Celtic way became subsumed in the dominant administration.
The Album can be downloaded from: https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/timardouin
The Celtic church was very different from the Roman church and the later Protestant churches.
