2012

Parents in the Philadelphia area have many camps to choose from when planning for the summer. With these choices comes the responsibility of selecting one that best fits the needs of your child, as well as your own schedule. At Abington Friends School (AFS) you will find summer camp programs that are responsive to these needs. For over 40 years the Abington Friends Summer Enrichment Program has been dedicated to providing campers with a truly enriching summer experience. We have a strong and proud tradition of providing programs that generate the smiles and memories that last a lifetime. Here at AFS your child can participate in a variety of “different camps” on our beautiful campus. Whether you choose the traditional day camp, a specialty camp or an academic camp, our philosophy remains the same: we want children to be happy and we truly believe they find happiness through having fun and making connections in a variety of engaging activities. We invite you to see how a summer at AFS can make a difference in your child’s life. Be sure to register early. Space is limited! If you are new to Abington Friends and are not familiar with our campus, I’d be more than happy to take you on a personal tour of our beautiful facilities.

Over 40 Years of Great Summers

specialty camps Dear …

Before another summer comes to an end we wanted to take a moment to thank you and the AFSEP team for providing such an outstanding experience for our daughter, Leah…. This is Leah's fourth year at AFSEP, a camp that she now describes as "her camp". This year, before signing up for AFSEP, we encourTennis aged Leah to broaden her horizons and consider a Basketball different summer camp experience. She was a good sport and accompanied us to a few of your competitors' open house events. At the end of the day, Leah did not waiver and insisted on returning to "her camp". We now understand why Leah feels so strongly that AFSEP is "her camp". As parents we are thrilled, that she is bubbling over at the end of every single day. Everyday has been a happy day, and that is huge! As far as we are concerned this extreme happiness is the basis of achievement in all other areas such as, skill building, risk taking, making new friends, increasing physical fitness and simply having fun. We would also like to applaud AFSEP on the quality, experience, professionalism and diversity of its team, it is second to none in the region. Warm Regards, Claudia … AFSEP Parent

Senior Camp (Ages 6-9) Full Day 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Two Week Minimum Our Senior Campers enjoy a morning filled with scheduled innovative activities that are directed by adult professional teachers and coaches. Grouped according to age, participants attend a different set of activities each day. Sports, tennis, games, archery, karate, drama, music, dance and art are all classes on the weekly schedule. Campers receive a daily instructional swim lesson by a Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructor in one of our two swimming pools. At AFSEP we recognize the need for campers to participate in their favorite activities. To accommodate them, weekly electives are offered that allow campers to choose activities that provide them with ample time doing what they enjoy most. Lunch / Snack: Lunches will be served daily and are included in the camp payment. A lunch menu will be provided. A morning snack, which usually includes juice, graham crackers, cookies, etc., will also be provided.

The Counselor-inTraining Program (Ages 14+) Entering 9th grade Full Day 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. This program is available to campers with special interests and talents who are entering high school. It seeks to develop the skills needed to become a competent junior counselor. In the mornings, our CIT’s are assigned to a group or an activity where they develop their leadership skills and sense of responsibility through their daily interaction with campers, camp staff and parents. After lunch, CIT’s can participate in our weekly elective activities, swim or continue assisting the staff as needed. Our CIT’s are given specific group challenges over the course of the camp season and volunteering to participate is an essential component of the CIT camp experience. Most CIT’s spend two years in the program before applying for a position as a JC. Snack and lunch will be provided.

Find your passion. Explore your world. Free Choice Activities periods give campers the opportunity to continue exploring their areas of interest. We also set aside community time because we know it’s important for kids to have the space to socialize. During community time, campers come together and take part in camp wide activities, such as a rousing game of capture the flag, a fast-paced pick-up game of basketball, a free swim in the pool or relaxing in the shade with a group of friends and a roll of Gimp. If your son or daughter is looking for an engaging way to spend the summer, Camp Endeavor is the perfect choice.

Humanities

AGES 11-18

Courses offered in the Summer Humanities/Adventure Series are for campers who are looking for an experiential, stimulating and enriching summer, unlike anything they have done in the past. They are specifically designed and instructed by the master teachers of Abington Friends School. The 2012 series will feature two exceptional offerings this season. Our plans include opportunities and experiences for campers who love making the past come alive or would relish the chance to live the life of an adventurer. Won’t you join us and be one of the lucky few? Remember, space is limited. Call now to reserve your passport to a great summer: 215-576-3996

Gettysburg: Reel to Real July 2 – July 6 In the summer of 1863, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and the Union Army of the Potomac clashed in the small town of Gettysburg, PA. In what would be known as the largest battle ever seen in the western hemisphere, places like Devils Den, the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge would become hallowed ground as many young Americans made the supreme sacrifice for their cause. Men with names like Lee, Pickett, Longstreet and Chamberlain would live on in history books that recall their roles in deciding the most famous battle of the Civil War. Using Michael Shaara’s Killer Angels and the critically acclaimed movie Gettysburg, this camp will examine the men, events and importance of the three-day battle. Discussions, projects and simulations will culminate with an overnight trip to Gettysburg where participants will camp out under the stars on the battlefield. While there, campers will spend two days exploring, sketching, photographing and journaling about this historic event. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to seize the high ground, repel the charge and listen for that infamous rebel yell as we go “Reel to Real” in Gettysburg. Instructed by Matt Slagter, Language Department Chair, and Latin teacher of 25 years, degrees from Northwestern University, University of Chicago, Bryn Mawr College, and longtime amateur Civil War historian.

Adventure The Great Outdoor Adventure: By Land And By Sea! July 9-July 20 When school year is over, it’s time to take a break from being indoors and focusing on your ipods, X-Boxes, and HD-TVs. Wouldn’t it be great to get out and explore the world and experience it for yourself! And this camp— The Great Outdoor Adventure (GOA)—is just the thing to aid you in doing this! We will go on multiple adventures, delve into our imaginations, and (most importantly) have fun! On land, we are planning camping, hiking, high ropes, horseback riding and white water rafting. At sea, we will sail on the Mystic Whaler, a tall ship, from New London, CT, to Nantucket, MA, and back, with the campers serving as the actual crew of the ship. We’ll also push our minds and imaginations: reading short pieces of fiction, journaling, painting and drawing. Come join us for two amazing weeks as we plunge into the natural world and come face to face with real experience, with real adventure! At the conclusion, we will celebrate all that we have accomplished, discovered and learned. GOA is a camp designed for kids who are outdoor novices or experts, and we will all encounter new opportunities, conundrums, and obstacles. In fact, the leaders of the camp, our seasoned AFS teachers, Don Kaplan and Donna Haines (and a few others!), will be right there in the mix, learning, pushing, sweating and hauling. All campers need to be between the ages of 11-18, know how to swim, and want to experience the life of an adventurer!

AFSEP
