Senior Camp (Ages 6-9) There are few things that children look forward to as much as the beginning of their summer vacation. It’s a time when they enjoy the pleasures of being outdoors, swimming, their friends and seemingly endless play. In short, it’s a time for kids to have fun. At the Abington Friends School, we offer a camp day that is filled with a variety of activities that will make it an unforgettable summer for your child.

Early Childhood (Ages 2-3)

Junior Camp (Ages 4-5)

Full Day (8:00am–4:00pm) Half Day (8:00am–12:00pm)

Full Day (9:00am–3:30pm) Half Day (9:00am–12:30pm)

Two Week Minimum Three, four and five day options are available.

Two Week Minimum

This eight week program is designed to continue many of the experiences preschoolers have during the academic year. The activities are specific to their developmental level and the focus is on having fun. The goal is to allow children to make discoveries, experience enriching activities and have social interactions with the other campers by working individually and in small groups. The program is staffed by Abington Friends Early Childhood teachers and by assistants, in college or recent graduates who have experience working with children. Parents must provide a lunch.

In our Junior Camp, children are grouped by age in selfcontained settings for an enriching sampler of scheduled activities that include art, music, games, free play, storytelling, creative movement and drama. Junior camp is designed to promote socialization, independence, creativity and problem solving in the very young child while an emphasis is placed on having fun; after all children learn best when they enjoy what they are doing. All of our junior campers receive daily instructional swim lessons with one of our Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors. In Junior Camp, our teachers follow weekly themes that culminate in exciting Friday activities. Designed to capture the interest of youngsters, past themes have been: Trains, Planes & Automobiles, Tea Time, In The Good Old Summer Time, Space Adventure, Surf’s Up, My Teddy Bear, Monster Madness and Little Chefs. Half day options are available. Lunch / Snack: Lunches will be served daily and are included in the camp payment. A lunch menu will be provided. A morning snack, which usually includes juice, graham crackers, cookies, etc., will also be provided.

Full Day (9:00am–3:30pm)

The Counselor-inTraining Program (Ages 14+)

Two Week Minimum Our Senior Campers enjoy a morning filled with scheduled innovative activities that are directed by adult professional teachers and coaches. Grouped according to age, participants attend a different set of activities each day. Sports, tennis, games, archery, karate, drama, music, dance and art are all classes on the weekly schedule. Campers receive a daily instructional swim lesson by a Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructor in one of our two swimming pools. At AFSEP we recognize the need for campers to participate in their favorite activities. To accommodate them, weekly electives are offered that allow campers to choose activities that provide them with ample time doing what they enjoy most. Lunch / Snack: Lunches will be served daily and are included in the camp payment. A lunch menu will be provided. A morning snack, which usually includes juice, graham crackers, cookies, etc., will also be provided.

Entering 9th grade Full Day 9:00am-3:30pm This program is available to campers with special interests and talents who are entering high school. It seeks to develop the skills needed to become a competent junior counselor. In the mornings, our CIT’s are assigned to a group or an activity where they develop their leadership skills and sense of responsibility through their daily interaction with campers, camp staff and parents. After lunch, CIT’s can participate in our weekly elective activities, swim or continue assisting the staff as needed. Our CIT’s are given specific group challenges over the course of the camp season and volunteering to participate is an essential component of the CIT camp experience. Most CIT’s spend two years in the program before applying for a position as a JC. Snack and lunch will be provided.

June 27–August 19, 2011 (Ages 10–13)

camp endeavor Find your passion. Explore your world.

Camp Endeavor is more than a traditional camp, it’s a place where campers can find and pursue the activities they are passionate about. We believe that campers in this age range should have choices beyond the traditional camp fare, so we’ve built a schedule to accommodate them. Campers choose areas of interest, such as outdoor adventures, performing arts, visual arts, science or athletics and they have multiple opportunities to pursue them during the course of our five-period day. Free Choice Activities periods give campers the opportunity to continue exploring their areas of interest. We also set aside community time because we know it’s important for kids to have the space to socialize. During community time, campers come together and take part in camp wide activities, such as a rousing game of capture the flag, a fast-paced pick-up game of basketball, a free swim in the pool or relaxing in the shade with a group of friends and a roll of Gimp. If your son or daughter is looking for an engaging way to spend the summer, Camp Endeavor is the perfect choice. (over)

campprogram endeavor descriptions Drama Orienteering Orienteering is the skill that, enables a person to navigate with a map. Camp Endeavor courses will be set up so that a complete newcomer can finish in the given time by walking at his/her own pace. Most of the orienteering is on the AFS campus, but some off trail navigation will be required if the challenge ends up in Alverthorpe Park.

Drama is open to all students who wish to explore and expand their speaking, acting and auditioning skills. In this performance camp you will learn the skills that could one day make you a star. Everyone has dramatic ability and this major will help you develop it. Characterization, theatre games and exercises, improvisation, monologues and scenes are all part of the program, leading to a presentation on the last day.

Archery Archery has been a long time favorite activity at AFS and we have produced some fine archers. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced archer our certified instructor will work with you to improve your skills. At the end of each session our team of archers will invite other local camps to join them in a match at Endeavor’s first “Robin Hood” competition.

Frisbee Games In Frisbee Games, campers play Frisbee golf on a nine-hole course that will be set up with new challenges each time they play. On other days, campers might be engaged in a game of ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee basketball or Frisbee bocce.

Summer Shakespeare This major allows students to explore the basics of acting on the stage. Group activities encourage teamwork and creative problem-solving-skills, which are useful in all academic subjects. Each session explores a different topic (character development, environment and situation) and utilizes scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. Students are able to put into practice the various techniques they learn through exercises in improvisation, observation, text analysis and voice work.

Rock Band

Using hand held tracking devices provided by Camp Endeavor, our geo trackers will hunt for carefully hidden “treasure” that has been hidden by other teams, play geo-capture-the-flag and design geo-cache objects for other on-line treasure seekers to find.

Camp Endeavor’s Rock Band major is limited to 12 campers. Anyone choosing this major should have at least 18 months of experience playing a musical instrument. Our team of musicians will work closely with each camper within a multi level curriculum to improve their technique, stage presence and skills. At the end of the session, the band will showcase their skills in a camp wide presentation.

Water World

Dance

In Water World, campers will participate in activities ranging from team projects such as building a pontoon raft to support a camper while traveling the length of the pool, engaging in a science based scavenger hunt through the creek or participating in a day of water competition that extends beyond the swimming pools.

If you are looking to improve your dance technique this summer and have a blast doing it, then this fun filled major is for you! Designed with every dancer in mind, daily classes will be given in ballet, jazz, tap or hip-hop. Students will be invited to participate in a performance at the end of each session.

Geo Tracking

Digital Photography

Robotics

The digital photography major offers lessons ranging from the basics of film, optics, cameras and light to web page layout and digital photography. The course is packed full of photography tips and advice, built for the novice and professional alike. This is the perfect major for those wanting to know more about film and digital photography.

Developed by the National Robotics Consortium at Carnegie Mellon University, this program is specifically designed to use the motivational effects of building robots to teach math, science and engineering concepts to middle school students. Activities include designing and building robots, learning programming and presentation software, working in teams, mastering tasks and sharing in robotic challenges with their fellow campers.

Digital Movie Making In Digital Movie Making, campers will work in groups of four to create digital movies and share them on DVD or the Internet. They will also work to create media rich websites on a subject of their choice. Some potential projects include: Podcasts Claymation or stop-motion animation Video postcards Digital movies Documentaries Digital music Websites

Ceramics Ceramics is for the artist who just can’t wait to get his/her hands into a block of clay. Pinch Pots, sculpt-it and throwing projects are in the plans for the camper who prefers working in three-dimensional arts. Finished projects will be displayed at the end of the session in the Endeavor Art Gallery.

Painting & Drawing If art is your favorite subject in school, you will love Painting & Drawing. In this major, campers will have the opportunity to develop their art skills through a combination of painting and drawing activities. The Endeavor Art Gallery will highlight the work of our fine artists.

Soccer, Basketball, Lacrosse, Tennis

Construction & Deconstruction What goes up must come down. In this camp you will learn how things go up, such as bridges and rockets and you will learn how things come down. Whether caused by an earthquake, volcano, avalanche or man's own doing, the science of destruction will be examined along with the science of construction.

Rocketry Rocketry enables youngsters with no modeling experience to become seasoned rocketeers. Along the way they learn some basic physics, a little rocketry history and have a lot of fun! Our campers build, craft, creatively paint and launch their rockets under the careful eye of our staff. Our rockets are similar to rockets you find in a good craft store, with parachutes and small solid fuel engines. They come in all shapes and sizes and are launched from a safe distance by an electric signal from a control pad.

Forensics This major offers an introduction to crime scene investigation, including the techniques and tools used for gathering and analyzing evidence. Campers dive into forensics, learning through case studies and mock crime scenes and hands-on lab work. Campers will dust for fingerprints, collect samples and identify evidence. They will also learn how to organize information critical to both criminal investigation and prosecution. The session culminates in our own mock crime scene investigation: Endeavor’s version of “C.S.I. Jenkintown”!

Campers choosing to focus on sports will work on developing and tuning the skills that will enable them to play more competitively at the middle and high school levels. While Lacrosse is relatively different for males and females, our staff will provide the appropriate activities and drills that will be beneficial to both.

Sports Favorites In Sports Favorites, campers will play the games they have come to associate with summer camp. Dodge ball, doctor ball, capture the flag and gaga are a few examples of the games campers will participate in.
