I never thought twice about taking another semester with Sada sir. His balance of support and critique helped me develop a discipline in the way I think and work - without which the studio would not have turned out the way it has. Apart from design, there’s a set of values and principles for life that I’ve gained during our interactions. For this experience, sir, I am indebted to you.

Shrenee Ma’am and Devvrat have been instrumental in making sure everything happens as planned. To all my studio mates- it was an amazing experience. Thank you!

To Hamsa, Tej, Yug, Karan & Ansh for being the unshakable rocks of friendship I can always rest on and my intellectual sounding boards; and Shria, for always being there.

Mom and Dad - for training up a child in the way he should go, for when he is old, he will not depart from it.

Product Analysis

Definitions

Part: A discrete object present in a product

Component: No. of total repetitions of parts present in a product.

Eg. in a BoM, there can be 8 parts and 37 Components. Manufacturing such a product would require a minimum of 8 part drawings, although there are 37 components.

Assembly

To show how these components come together a minimum of 1 assembly drawing is required. Especially for moulded or casted parts, sections are essential. (see right)

Intermediary Part Drawings

According to processes used in manufacturing, each part will need multiple intermediary drawings sent for each process.

Product Analysis

- Material

so and so is made out of 2 components, out of which A is planar, and B is bulk. The requirement of part A was to be lightweight and low-cost, hence it was made out of Aluminum and was not finished. Whereas B was to be in contact with users all the time, so it was made out of plastic with rubberized finish.

- Colour

From a production and consumer psychology perspective, Colours play an important role in the manufacturing and design process. They give a feeling of personalization, ownership and control over products that are otherwise exactly identical.

- Finish

Often overlooked, finishes are important because one notices them most when it is blatantly misused or overlooked in our daily lives. Dull mirrors, glossy plastics phones. On the contrary, good finishes form a pleasurable interaction between the product and user.

- Graphics

Form, material and color can only convey so much information. Graphics are the final layer of product design that complete the loop of communication, giving us a robust design.

Injection Moulding Simulation

Why bother with an injection moulding simulation?

The process of setting up the simulation itself helped me realize all the factors involved in moulding, and how they affect the end result - this is as practical and holistic as it can get.

Aim a. To simulate the parameters required to make of this part b. To predict the defects by observing corresponding areas of the real product, thereby verifying the process. c. To propose an alternate method of moulding that improves on either material parameters, machine parameters or process parameters

Aspirations Fulfilled

Develop an ability to analyze, evaluate and critique products from different perspectives Understand plastics moulding parameters & simulation setups deeply

The Secret Life of a Showerhead

Before it reaches a bathroom, a shower goes through a multitude of proccesses to reach it’s final form! Let’s look at briefly at the journey of a showerhead from raw material to finished product.

Warehousing & Retrieval

Material is stored and sent to process stations based on requirement

Raw Material Arrives Orders are sent out as per BOM, and delivered to the warehouse

Head Subassembly

Injection Moulding, Compression Moulding and other bulk operations take place here

Pipe Subassembly

The showerhead’s arm is made here. Operations such as cutting, welding, grinding and pipe threading are done

Final Assembly

Both subassemblies come together in this station; simutaneously, they are visually inspected

Testing

Assembled products are placed in the flow testing machine; defective products go back to the assembly line for checks

Packaging

Here both subassemblies are separated and packed, for better efficiency; they are then loaded into cartons

Pipe Threading A special machine ensures quality and speed of cutting threads

Fixturing Correct fixturing is a crucial step. Special jigs ensure fast, accurate and reliable setups

Subassembly

Welding

Cutting Trimming raw pipe stock to required length and angle. This requires a jig as well

Welding Flux-cored MIG wire eliminates the need for argon gas in the process

Inspection Job is inspected based on checklistfor critical dimensions, leakage and cracks
