Welcome to the October/November issue of About Ballinteer Hello again and welcome to your new About Magazine and can I take this opportunity to thank all of you who have been in touch, your feed-back is as always very welcome. In this month’s edition, again we have a great deal of interesting editorial on a diverse range of subjects, first of all I’m sure all of the little ones you know are still deciding on which hideous creature they shall be scaring the “b’jaysus” out of us with this year. We have some useful hints and tips to get us through the end of the month and make, what is one of my favourite times of the year, a little easier.

Lose weight and feel great Have you been gaining weight over the last few years? Do you find it increasingly difficult to lose weight? Do you crave particular foods? Do you feel tired all the time? Have you been yo-yo dieting? If the answer to any of above is yes then your blood sugar is probably out of balance. Keeping your blood sugar stable is the secret to losing weight. You may be familiar with the Glycaemic Index (GI) of foods; however the Glycaemic Load (GL) is a better way of gauging the effect of foods on your blood sugar levels, and thus your energy, wellbeing and weight. GL is a measure of the quantity and quality of carbohydrate in any given food. It shows us the effect each type of food has on our blood sugar. Foods with a high GL rating encourage the body to "store" fat. Foods with a low GL rating encourage the body to "burn" fat. You might be amazed by some of the foods that have a high GL rating. Cornflakes have a very high GL whilst ice cream and peanuts do not! Your body is designed to burn glucose for energy. Carbohydrates such as grains (bread, pasta, rice) and fruits are broken down into glucose in the body. But in today’s typical western diet, the wrong types of carbohydrates are consumed excessively resulting in too much blood glucose. The excess is stored as fat leaving the body craving even more food to meet its energy requirements. When this happens the body has lost blood sugar control and weight gain becomes inevitable. If your blood glucose levels are even, you'll have a steady supply of energy and a healthy but balanced appetite. But, if your blood sugar levels are too high, you'll lay down fat and if they are too low, you'll feel tired and lethargic. Balance is key. So, the best way to lose weight is to regain blood sugar control which heralds the return of your body's ability to burn fat. How to balance your blood sugar • Avoid sugar and stimulants (coffee, tea, alcohol, caffeine, cigarettes) • Eat a low Glycaemic load diet. • Eat protein with carbohydrates • Drink plenty of water • Exercise every day. Emotional Eating by Suzanne Horgan What is Emotional Eating? Emotional Eating occurs when an individual uses behavior with food to change or manage their feelings. In many cases the person does not know how or what they are feeling, what they do know is they can feel tension in their body and this tension will cease once they eat. Emotional Eaters tend to … • Be confused about how they feel • Have difficulty naming feelings/managing their feelings • Have difficulty with a specific feeling (often feel fat instead) • • Do not feel entitled to have certain feelings. • Have difficulty expressing feelings Emotional Eaters tend to eat to… • Hide or cope with negative or bad feelings • Bring suppressed feelings to the surface • Feed a hungry heart • Deal with stress (real or perceived), self-abuse, trauma • Deal with Boredom, Anxiety, Loneliness, Fear, loss etc…. The difference between emotional and physical hunger? There are distinct differences between a physical cue for hunger from the body and an emotional cue for hunger. Whereas physical hunger starts in the stomach an emotional hunger will starts in the head or mouth and where the physical is a very gradual the emotional is a sudden and quick craving. A physical hunger will allow you stop when full against the emotional which doesn’t allow you to stop if you feel full at all, then comes the guilt attached after eating. So How Do I deal with my Emotional Eating? As with anything we wish to change, we must first identify and acknowledge the feelings we are eating in response to. The following are some tips on how to deal with emotional eating. 1. Identify the feelings that you are eating in response to by keeping a food diary. Your food diary not only records the food you eat but where you ate it, how hungry you were and what you were feeling before and after you ate. Self-monitoring is the best way to identify feelings which are not being expressed or managed appropriately. 2. After you have identified the feelings you are using food to manage then you can become aware of the triggers that are maintaining your emotional eating examples… It is a person, a situation, a thought, an image, the media, stress, trying on clothes, negative body image, tiredness, etc… 3. Changing emotional eating does not have to involve healing the feeling; instead try to separate the feeling from the eating behavior. Emotional Literacy involves acceptance of our feelings, not liking them sometimes, not being able to make sense of them other times, just accept that we have them. A feeling is a feeling not a fact! 4. Sometimes a person is missing a skill that if developed then the need for emotional eating would subside. These skills can be any of the following… Anxiety Reduction Skills, Communication Skills, Planning Skills, Problem Solving Skills, Stimulus Control Skills (managing food in your environment), Relaxation Skills and Social Skills. Remember it’s not what you’re eating, but what’s eating you!

Carving the pumpkin This really should not take too long and the children love it, it really gets them into the swing of things. Have a pumpkin carving contest for your kids and their friends. Buy a few smaller pumpkins and give prizes for the most creative. You can also use paints as an alternative.
Costumes The kids love dressing up and thankfully there are many stores stocking something for the little ones of all ages, the days of a bin liner and a false face are well and truly over so from lady-bugs to little reapers a good costume should not cost more than 10 to 15 Euro but do shop around.

Remember, wearing a mask can add a great look to your costume but make sure that the eye holes and mouth hole is big enough to wear comfortably all night!

Fabulous Fish Pie (Serves 4) At this time of year, what you want for tea is a plate of pure velvety comfort and not much can beat a homemade fish pie for that. You can use a mix of fresh and smoked fish, such as salmon, haddock, cod and smoked haddock, as well as a few prawns and mussels to create a tasty mix. Most recipes will cook the fish in the milk used to make the sauce, leaving you with a flaky, smooth mix, not to mention extra washing up. This recipe gives you a chunky, satisfying mix and means you can prepare the pie in advance to safely reheat at your leisure, say make it on a lazy Sunday afternoon for an easy tea on Monday?
3. Cut the fish into good sized chunks and drain and rinse the shellfish. When the sauce has cooled, stir the fish through the sauce and place into a well buttered pie dish. Boil the potatoes until they are tender and mash with butter and milk. Season to taste and, after it’s cooled a little, spoon or pipe over the top of your pie. Spread it out evenly and then run a fork across the surface to rough it up a little. Glaze with melted butter and it’s ready. Keep it covered in the fridge until you’re ready for dinner.
1lb / 450g Mixed fish fillets skinned & boned 1 pack of cooked mixed shellfish 1 large onion, finely diced The white of 1 leek, finely sliced 4oz / 100g butter plus extra for glazing 3 heaped dessert spoons plain flour 2 pints/ 1lt milk ¼ pint / 150ml double cream Chopped fresh dill and parsley Juice of half a lemon Salt and pepper to taste 4 or 5 large potatoes Butter and milk to taste 1. If you are intending to eat the pie as soon as you have made it, heat the oven to 180°c/350°f and skip all the parts about cooling stuff down and keeping in the fridge. Just mix it up as per the recipe and straight in the oven. Otherwise go straight to step 2. 2. To make the sauce, melt the butter in a large pan and fry the onions and leek until they are tender and translucent, but not starting to brown. Sprinkle in the flour. Cook the flour for a minute or two, stirring hard over a low to medium heat and then start to add the milk and cream, a little at a time, stirring constantly to remove any lumps. Once you have added all the milk and cream, continue stirring until the sauce reaches the boil, turn down the heat and simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Finally, stir in some chopped parsley and/or dill to taste and the lemon juice. You should be left with quite a thick sauce when it is ready but don’t worry, liquid from the fish will thin it down as it bakes. Tear a circle of greaseproof paper to fit the pan, rub with a little butter and place over the surface of the sauce to prevent a skin forming while it cools. 12 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

Round the Garden in October by Tom Percy Autumn sees the end of the main growing season and the start of dormant winter months, with most plants dying back leaving you with a lot of tidying up to do. If you have deciduous trees around your garden, the accumulation of fallen leaves will play havoc with your grass and plants, as well as your back as you rake them up. So put them to good use by creating leaf mould – a beneficial enriching additive for your soil.

To make leaf mould, poke some holes in the sides and base of a black bin liner and put the leaves into it. When almost full, shake the bag, add a little water if the leaves are dry, and tie up the bag. Stack in a shady spot and by next autumn the leaves will have broken down to a rich crumbly mixture that can be used as a mulch or soil conditioner.
Considering that compost is created from old, rotting vegetation, amongst other things, the finished product is remarkably fragrant, rich, dark and crumbly and is a valuable addition to your soil as well as a great method of recycling waste items.
The ideal compost heap or bin is easily accessible, has a lid or cover, located in a sunny or semi-shaded and placed directly onto the ground well away from watercourses.

Home PC Security by Stuart Ferguson Web Scams Anne Galligan of Micropro Computers has made About Magazines aware of a serious threat that has cropped up recently and that is of unsolicited phone calls made to people telling them of how they can help speed up their aging home PC by “Online PC Care” or an “Online PC Doctor”. Firstly you are asked if your PC is running a little slow, you will probably say yes and then be told to enter their website as they have the solution. They will then direct you to a link and ask you to download the software sometimes called LogMeIn that will help you, unsurprisingly an error message then appears but that is only a decoy to enforce their premise that there was something wrong in the first place, you are then asked to pay up to €200 to have this virus or error removed and repaired. By now though the program you have installed has given them remote access and opened a portal or back door into your Home PC and they can now access at any time, they have all your details, your email addresses so they can now target them and more importantly they can keep taking the €200 fee as often as they like. By the time you realise that you have been wronged the website that you visited has been taken down and is no more, all you can do is contact the Garda and take it from there and have your PC looked at by a professional. If you have already taken this call you can contact Micropro and they can advise you on what to do next if you have already followed these instructions. Here are some more tips to help with your security: Backup your Files: There are several tools you can use to back up your computer. They vary widely in price, size and ease of use. Some tools, like external hard drives, may provide instructions for how to back up files. In most cases, copying files is as easy as finding the information you want to back up on your computer and copying it onto the media or drive you're using. Use a more sophisticated Password: Your dog’s name or your favourite child ( if you have one) is not enough, try to use a complicated password using letter and numeric in about 8 or so digits, you will be surprised at the more you use it the more you remember it. One trick is to use a phrase like this “My dog has four legs”, so it becomes – mydh4leg5.

If you need to write down your passwords never store it on a file on your computer, you would be surprised how many people have a word document called Passwords on their Home PC. Public Wireless Hot Spots The most convenient wireless services are free hotspots offered by coffee shops, schools, libraries, etc. but they can carry the greatest risks. Many hotspots are completely open, or protected by a common password. Clever scammers using the network can intercept messages as you send and receive information. If you're connecting to email or e-commerce sites, you may be transmitting passwords that can be snatched out of the ether by a nearby crook. So beware, try to avoid accessing your Paypal account, or online banking in the middle of a busy public café. Email Filters All email accounts will quickly become overloaded with junk, some which will contain dangerous viruses and scams. The good news is that any good email program now contains a lot of options for filtering out the stuff you don't want. Learning how to use those tools properly will make your email experience faster, safer and a lot simpler. Servicing and Upgrading
You wouldn’t let just anyone enter your house unchecked, so don’t let just anyone have access to your home PC. It carries in its circuits a lot about you and you want to keep that private. Use a reputable Servicing Dealer certified by a manufacturer, this is a great indicator that they have reached significant standards to bear the manufacturers servicing logo. By all means if you are recommended someone who home calls for servicing, is a certified training professional or advertises prominently with a landline number, use them, but a photo copied name and mobile number only through my door would not be enough. Bytes & Pieces Speeding Up Your PC When you first get your new laptop or desktop computer it seems to respond to every request instantly. However over time it slows down and whilst there are many reasons for this, one of the most common problems is that your hard disk becomes cluttered with files you’ll never use again. Using the disk cleanup tool helps you free up space. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete, and then allows you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files. Typical files that the tool will remove include: Temporary internet files. Downloaded program files Anything in the recycle bin Windows temporary files such as error reports. Optional Windows components that you don't use. Installed programs that you no longer use. In Windows 7 Click Start-> All Programs-> Accessories> System Tools, then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

Ford S-Max 2.0-litre TDCi Titanium PowerShift €36,545 This month we have been playing happy families, by driving what is regarded by most as one of the best seven-seaters around, the Ford S-Max. We have praised the S-Max before, because it is one of the few cars in this genre that is good looking first of all and secondly, is good to drive too. You see, up until the S-Max it used to be quite depressing to realise that you had to get out of your standard family car and dip your toe into the world of the MPV. The older generation of 7seaters were little more than converted vans and they were pretty shocking to drive in a lot of cases. With the S-Max, Ford set out to show that they could make something versatile that was good to drive too and dare I day, sporty. They certainly succeeded and together with the Galaxy, the S-Max has dominated what is admittedly quite a small segment here in Ireland for decent-sized 7-seater vehicles. The latest SMax gets some pretty basic styling revisions. There is more chrome on show and LED lights add some bling to the front end. Our test car is the 2.0-litre diesel model which comes with Ford's powershift six-speed automatic double-clutch transmission. It moves the car into 20 | ABOUT BALLINTEER
a higher tax bracket and adds about four grand to the asking price. However this gearbox is really excellent - it is very smooth and makes driving the car in heavy traffic a breeze. In terms of versatility - the S-Max is very good at what it is made to do and that is transport lots of people in comfort. Ford make no secret that if you really need to transport 7 adults in comfort then you need to buy the larger Galaxy, but the S-Max is ideal for younger families, where the rear seats will be fine for kids. Mastering the various combinations of the seats takes some practice, but it is pretty easy. For us, the S-Max remains the best-handling car in this segment and it is also beautifully made. Prices now start at a much more competitive €29,995, but out test model came in at €36,545 with some options and that PowerShift gearbox. Ford doesn't have things it own way anymore and Peugeot's 5008 deserves to be high on your shopping list if you need a seven-seater too, but this remains one of the best around.

Participants sought for 26k “Mountain Moon Challenge”! Participants are being sought to take part in a 26 kilometre “Mountain Moon Challenge” on Saturday 20th November along the Wicklow Way from Crone Wood to Glendalough! The Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team and FOG (Friends of the Glen) are hosting the Challenge to help raise funds towards the building of a new Base for the Glen team - one of Ireland’s

busiest Mountain Rescue teams. This will be the first Mountain Rescue base to be located on the east coast of Ireland.
Martin Whitehead Hospice Fund Martin passed away on the 8th of November 2009 at the age of 51 after a 2 year fight with Adrenal Cancer. He spent the last 11 weeks of his life in the loving care of Our Ladies Hospice Harold’s Cross. Martin was a much loved husband, father, son, brother, friend and was soon to be Grandad for the second time. He is a hugely missed. Martin felt so strongly about the care that he received in the hospice, that he set his family a task, to raise €250,000 for the hospice. It was during his stay that Martin donated his much loved (rarely used) 2007 Kawasaki 1600 motor bike that he bought just prior to his illness, to the hospice and he decided that this was to be the starting point for his family to reach the goal he set. Words cannot describe the care, compassion and support both Martin and his family received from the hospice during this extremely difficult time and it was this care that has made Martin’s family determined to fulfil his wishes. Following his death The Martin Whitehead Hospice Fund was set up and to date has raised €61,143.23 for the hospice. The Martin Whitehead Hospice Fund Big Raffle will take place this November with the first prize being Martin’s beloved bike, second being 2 nights B&B and 1 evening meal in Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort, Third being 12 Power Plate sessions for Bodysmart in Naas and many more prizes. Tickets are €100 each and only 200 will be sold. First prize will be the bike and there are many more fantastic prizes to be won. FREE Courses in Dundrum for Unemployed People Retain all allowances! South Dublin Adult Education Service is delighted to announce that three new courses are commencing in September 2010 in the Dundrum area. These courses are specifically for unemployed adults, who have registered for Job Seekers’ allowances. The participants will remain available to take up employment opportunities that may arise. As a result they continue to retain their social welfare benefits for the duration of the programme. (See our advertisement). The new courses will be delivered in the Centre for Adult and Further Education which was formerly Dundrum College. Each participant will attend classes for 5 mornings per week. Additional learning supports and adult education guidance are integral components of each programme. As an added bonus there will be optional extras included in each course, (e.g. a European Language, extra learning support). ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS Any adult who has been registered for Job Seekers’ Allowances (Benefit or Assistance) for a minimum of three months on course commencement is eligible to apply for the courses. THE COURSES Each course consists of computer training modules, communication skills and support with job seeking and other progression options. Three distinct programmes leading to full FETAC awards are offered to eligible adults who wish to improve their skills. 1. Business Studies: a business course with a strong computer element leading to a full FETAC Level 5 award. This course is aimed at adults who have a good functional level of written communication skills and have some basic computer skills. Following the course they are interested in working in a business office environment, or they wish to progress to further education to gain Level 6 qualifications. 2. Upskill for Opportunities: a general vocational certificate at FETAC Level 4. Applicants for the FETAC Level 4 course will require the necessary written communication skills to

complete assignments at this level. They wish to improve their skill base and apply for general operative vacancies in a variety of industries or progress to further education at a higher level. No previous computer knowledge is necessary as the course will commence with the basics. 3. Highlighting - The King of Greystones 2010 The annual King of Greystones charity triathlon couldn’t happen without a team of dedicated helpers who make sure everything runs smoothly. One of these volunteers gives us their perspective on the day…
It seems like an age ago now, but on Saturday August 7, I got up early to make my way to Greystones in my capacity as official volunteer for one of the most worthwhile charity events in the Dublin area, The King of Greystones Triathlon 2010. The brainchild of a small number of incredibly selfless people, The King of Greystones has been running for eight years now, and to my shame, this is the first time I’ve been directly involved. It was raining on my drive to the event, and I have to admit I was less than enthusiastic. However, on arrival, the sun actually managed to peek out and I could feel a tingle of excitement among the 100-strong team of volunteers who were queueing at the registration tent. We were all given details of our jobs for the morning, along with a T-shirt, and a very impressive goodie bag. As a non-competitor, I felt a bit guilty taking this, but that didn’t hold me back and I got stuck into a packet of Tayto, as I had missed brekkie. (I also got a flag! And it’s not often I get a flag so I thought it worthy of a mention.) After that, there was a briefing from the organizers about our duties for the day, and information on the event. This year, the funds raised were going to two charities: The Wicklow Hospice (a non-profit organisation that was set up by the people of Wicklow, to promote the right of every person to choose where they wish to spend their last days) and The Sam McMahon Trust (set up to raise funds for nine-year-old Sam, who was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia in 2008), which also funds the research centre FARA. Once the briefing was over, I had a few minutes to spare, so I

wandered down to the beach, to watch the athletes embark on an impressive 750m swim. I realised that although this is also a team event, with each team member taking on one leg of the challenge, many were completing the entire event on their own, which meant that after the 750m swim, they went directly into a 20km cycle, and then a 5km run to finish. Amazing! With the sun shining, I made my way to my post for the morning. I was near the end of the event, guiding the runners, so it was a while before I saw anybody, but as they began to go by, I was once again struck by the sheer passion of the people taking part. Indeed, there were over 300 participants, some young, some old, some fitness fanatics and some less so, and some with disabilities. I was also a little star struck, when I spied ex-Irish Rugby International Shane Byrne jog by. I managed to keep my composure, just, while at all times cheering and flag waving as athletes passed by looking tired and wishing for the finishing line. The morning flew by, and soon I was back at base enjoying the post-event atmosphere, and the barbecue that was accompanied by much-appreciated sunshine. In no time, Shane Byrne re-appeared, this time to announce the winners, and there was a hearty cheer for them all. But the rain was back again, and so after some last-minute clearing up, I made my way back home. It might seem a bit odd for me to thank the organisers, as I was merely a volunteer, but they deserve a huge thanks nonetheless, particularly when you consider the huge amount they’ve raised for charities over the years. Thanks are also due to the many sponsors of the event, including Newcastle Mazda and MenuPages.ie, along with all the local businesses and countless other companies who supported the event and who gave things for free for the barbecue and the goodie bags (thanks Tayto!). This is definitely one to note down in your 2011 diary.

WHAT IS MEDIATION? Mediation is a voluntary non binding process where two parties come together with the aid of an independent person called a Mediator with the sole purpose of bringing about a solution to their dispute.
IS IT SUITED TO FAMILY LAW? It is particularly suited to family law. It provides an opportunity for the couple to work through their issues with a skilled Mediator and come up with an agreement in relation to important issues such as custody and access regarding the children, the family home, maintenance and pensions. More importantly Mediation has the following further advantages: • •

It puts the children at the centre of discussions. It enables the couple to control the outcome rather than have a court impose a decision that may not suit either of them. It provides a mechanism whereby the couple can continue to co-parent the children into the future. It focuses on solutions rather than blame. A successful mediation is much quicker than the court procedure.
IS MEDIATION CHEAPER? Family law mediation is usually significantly cheaper than court litigation. The process will usually take 4 – 5 sessions of one and a half hours each.
