ABOUT FINANCES
Tax Return Deadline Looms! by John Bollard, Leonard & Company Tax Return fever will shortly begin, with the deadline of 31st October next looming even closer. If you file online you have until the 16th November to make your return. Under the self assessment system an individual with income apart from PAYE type income, should file a tax return every year. Many individuals do not realise that if they have PAYE income and rental income then they are obliged under the self assessment system to file a tax return even if they have no net rental income after taking all the outgoings into account. If they do not file they leave themselves open to penalties.
Commissioners have been writing recently to some tax payers asking them to clarify their position on mortgage interest. If you did not take out a new loan for a new house (not your first house) or top up a qualifying loan on your existing home since the 1st January 2003 you are not longer entitled to mortgage interest relief. It makes financial sense to bring your tax affairs up to date and it really is not that painful or expensive if you engage an experienced professional firm such as Leonard & Company. Leonard & Company file all their clients’ tax returns online, which ensures that any refunds due, are processed as speedily as possible.
Many people, including those with only PAYE income, have found that when they engaged Leonard & Company to file their tax returns a refund ensued after a claim was made for some of the following allowances:

For the rouille: 1 large garlic clove, crushed pinch saffron 1 large anchovy fillet 1 tsp harissa paste little lemon juice, to taste 125g (4.4oz) fresh mayonnaise For the croutons: 1 small baguette, diagonally sliced little olive oil 1. To make the rouille, pound down the garlic, saffron, anchovy, harissa and lemon juice in a mortar and pestle or mini chopper, then stir into the mayonnaise. 2. For the croutons, preheat the oven to 200°C, 180°C fan, 400°F, gas 6. Brush each side of the baguette slices with the oil then place on a wire rack in the oven for approx 10 minutes, until crisp. Dip the croutons into half of the parsley before serving. 3. Now make the stew. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil and add the onion. Cook for a few minutes, then add the garlic, chilli and fennel. Stir well and cook for a minute, then add the alcohol. Bring to the boil for a few minutes, then add the tomatoes, tomato purée and saffron. Season well with salt and freshly ground pepper. 4. Simmer for ten minutes, then add all of the fish, ending with the mussels. Cover and allow to cook for about five minutes, until the mussels have opened and all the fish has cooked through. Scatter over the remaining parsley. Ladle into bowls, serving the rouille and croutons on the side, together with grated Gruyère, if you like. The rouille should be served on top of the croutons for dunking in the stew. 10 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT CHILDREN’S ISSUES
ART CLASSES
Eat Your Greens! by www.mychild.ie Healthy eating for children is one of the most important parenting topics, but what do you do if your child is a fussy or difficult eater? Mum, Hollie Smith, shares her top tips from her book, ‘Dealing with Difficult Eaters: Stop mealtimes becoming a battleground with fussy children’, co-written with Dr. Sandi Mann and Sally Child. 1. Be Cool Easier said than done, admittedly, but it’s true that attitude is everything when it comes to feeding children. Never let them see that their food issues are upsetting you – in some cases it will simply make things worse. 2. Be Resilient Whether you’re trying to expand the limited food horizons of a fussy eater, or overhaul the habits of a child with a weight problem, you’ll need to be consistent, firm and resolute. 3. Be A Foodie Get them in the kitchen, cooking their own food, and in the garden, growing it. Take them shopping, let them choose, allow them to prepare meals and snacks. Experiment, try something different every so often. 4. Be A Good Eater Yourself Sit at the table with them, eat your greens, keep your treat intake limited. You are the foremost influence on your children, in eating and everything else.
7. Be Well Informed Do your homework so you know what the basics of nutrition are – that way, you’ll know off the top of your head what healthy alternatives you can offer a child who is asking for junk food. There are many different foods out there… it’s just a matter of discovering them all.
Class size is small. Maximum number per class is 7.
2 day halloween camp
8. Be United Get everyone else involved on your side. There’s not much point in dealing with a difficult eater one way, if someone else is dealing with it a different way. 9. Be Reasonable Maybe your little difficult eater just doesn’t like certain foods, or maybe they have a perfectly understandable preference for white bread. Why not? A child should never be made to eat anything. 10. Be Moderate Don’t fret or obsess about food – apart from driving yourself insane, you may have the opposite effect to the one you were hoping for. What our kids eat is, and should be, something to care about and be concerned about. It’s all about balance. You can get your hands on a copy of Hollie's book at www.amazon.com
5. Be Careful Don’t offer food as a bribe or reward, however desperate you get, and keep praise low-key. Be sure not to ‘label’ them – you may well have a difficult eater on your hands, but don’t call them one to their face. 6. Be Sensitive Watch out for the difficult eater with an underlying emotional need, and always treat the issue with care and understanding. 18 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

by Tom Percy

Before the end of October, you should ensure that you have planted your spring bulbs. Tulip bulbs should wait a little longer until nearer the beginning of November however, as this reduces the risk of them developing virus. You should however aim to plant before any hard frosts occur.
drainage. Put some broken crockery in the bottom of the pot and add enough grit to leave an inch or two's layer beneath the soil. Whilst you don't want to overwater them, if your tubs are very sheltered or we have a particularly dry winter, a watering won't go amiss on a frost free day.
The range of bulbs available these days is immense. Miniature daffodils are very popular for small gardens, although you can't beat the standard ones for a big splash of colour. But think beyond daffodils to hyacinths, snowdrops, iris, allium and crocus bulbs to get a variety of colour. If you don't like seeing all the foliage left in your garden after the spring flowering, plant your bulbs in tubs. You must ensure that your pots have good

Highlighting - The Cell System of Parish Renewal: a Rich Harvest by MeidhbhĂn NĂ Ăšrdail The cell system of parish renewal evolved from a Lenten course held in the parish of St. John the Evangelist in Ballinteer in 1990. The curate at that time, Fr Michael Hurley, heard that in the St Eustorgio parish in Milan a European Workshop on the Parish Cell System of Evangelisation was being hosted by its parish priest, Don Pigi Perini. Together with three of his parishioners, Fr Hurley travelled to Milan to learn at first hand how the cell experience there could translate to a parish in Dublin 16. What those attending witnessed there turned out to be the catalyst for establishing a Cell Community in the parish of Ballinteer and elsewhere in Ireland. And so, from its inception nineteen years ago, the Cell Community in Ireland has steadily grown and multiplied, with members living today in almost forty parishes throughout the country.
Celebrating the ‘rich harvest’ which is the Cell Community in Ireland, the 19th annual seminar will take place in the parish of St. John the Evangelist, Ballinteer, between the 9th and 11th October 2009. Down through the years, the seminar has always attracted those wishing to set up a network of faith groups in their respective parishes. It has enabled them to see at first hand an important support structure, while encouraging them also to set up their own groups. For anybody wishing to experience a more living faith within community, the seminar will undoubtedly offer valuable insights and encouragement. How does the cell experience express itself in a given parish? Essentially, groups of between four and twelve meet on a fortnightly basis (usually in the home of the cell group leader) for approximately an hour to an hour-and-a-half. Meetings begin with the singing of a number of hymns from a booklet and prayer, and move on to voluntary sharing of a faith experience by those present. There then follows a Scripture passage and a recorded teaching on it. Intercessory prayer and a cup of tea conclude proceedings. In the specific context of Ireland, of course, ceall also happens to be the Irish-language equivalent of English ‘cell’. Besides, ceall translates as ‘church’, and refers by extension to ‘a monastic settlement or foundation’. Ceall incorporates what parish cell communities are about, namely a gathering together of its members in prayer in a specific location - a settlement or foundation if you like - while it also represents Church as a community of believers who strive to grow in intimacy with the Lord and in love of one another.

ABOUT HALLOWEEN
5 Ideas for a Stress Free Halloween by Fiona Tuomey As the years pass, we have become more ‘American’ in our celebration of Halloween. Costumes have become more elaborate (fewer bin liners!) and Halloween decorations more elaborate. But if you're a working parent, you probably want ideas for making Halloween safe and fun for the kids and easy for you. 1. Keep the Costume Simple Devoted mums sewing her child’s Halloween costume from scratch is a myth. The most elaborate costumes I see at Halloween are shop bought. Homemade costumes tend to be dress-up clothes or creative uses of polonecks and bedsheets. So, unless you adore crafts, keep it simple. Your little one will be delighted to wear their favourite tutu or fire fighter's helmet, with colour co-ordinated clothes you already own. If you or your child want something shop bought, check out eBay, dublinwaste.ie and your local charity shop for deals. You can find gorgeous costumes for under â‚Ź10 each. It's certainly easier than staying up all night making a monkey costume!
•
Find a way to make your child visible to cars, whether it's light-up shoes, a glow-in-the-dark wrist band, etc.
4. Choose Sweet Free Treats I would never want to be the killjoy who gives apples to the children. But, there's something to be said for handing out treats that won't rot their teeth. Think about giving out fake tattoos or little toys that you'd put in a goodie bag. You can find them in the ₏uro discount shops, Penny’s etc.

5. Find Another Way to Celebrate If you can’t get home from work on time, explore whether some friends or relatives would want to join you for a Halloween party on the weekend closest to the day. Whatever you decide - have fun and take some photos of your children. The time passes quickly and these times will be treasured memories in the future.

2. Pick a Good Time to ‘Trick or Treat’ When to trick or treat will depend on your child's bedtime and your work schedule. Little children may find it too hard to stay up past 7pm, so go ahead and take them right after dinner. Many parents I know leave work early on Halloween, to eat earlier and go out trick or treating. It's tempting to stretch the kids' bedtime but this can lead to meltdowns.

Halloween Course
The Halloween Course takes place during the Autumn mid-term school break.
3. Make Safety the Priority Halloween should only be scary for fun - not for real. So keep safety above all else and make sure your children are aware of what they can do to stay safe. If you decide to let your older kids go out without an adult, give them a charged mobile phone to carry. Make sure you agree on the route they will take and when they should be home. They should carry a flashlight and promise to stay together. Other safety tips include: • Make sure any masks are easy to remove and leave room to breathe. • Choose costumes that are appropriate for the weather! Avoid purple legs and shivering children. 24 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT STYLE
Personal Style De-Mystified by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant I was reflecting over the summer on what the recurring questions and issues were that I help clients with during the wardrobe de-cluttering and personal shopping times we have. Often it’s the personal style issue that concerns us most with the following questions coming up regularly:
On Tuesday the 3rd of November I will be hosting a personal style night in the Giddy Studios on Grange Road. We will consider the above questions and look at the importance of: body shape, clothing personality, colour, capsule wardrobe and using accessories to change outfits.
• Do I have a personal style and what is it?
The evening will begin at 7.30pm with a glass of wine and finish with tea/coffee around 9.30pm. The cost is €20 per person.
• How do I identify it? • How can I be age appropriate now that I’ve had that significant birthday? • I used to know what suited me but feel that I’ve lost my way somehow.
on Saturday Mornings
Good level of fitness and core stability required
If you are interested in attending please let me know by text or e-mail as places are limited. This should be a fun night ladies – let me de-mystify the style issue once and for all!
It is easy to become confused between fashion and style, however personal style is not about following fashion, it is about understanding what works for you, your body shape, your lifestyle, and how to express yourself effortlessly and comfortably by wearing your clothes confidently. We are surrounded by images of stick thin models wearing clothes that wouldn’t suit the lifestyle of most of the women who look at them. Finding out how to sift through the new seasons fashion to find the pieces that suit and fit you can be a daunting task for even the most dedicated shopper and I know that for many of us that is just too much like hard work: we don’t know where to begin or what to look for. When you understand what your personal style is, the hunt for the correct items becomes easier. Realising what trends in the current fashion won’t suit you and interpreting the parts that will, leave you free to be selective and confident. 26 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS
Finding Time for Romance by David Kavanagh, Avalon Finding time for romance often proves to be difficult if not impossible for most people these days. Hectic work schedules, household chores, taking care of your children’s endless demands usually leave you exhausted at the end of a long week. When you are juggling a busy lifestyle and a relationship, finding time to keep the candles (never mind the fires) of romance burning can be a huge struggle. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’re trying to regain some time for the love that you have, following these simple steps below should make your struggle to regain romance a whole lot easier. If your relationship is a priority to you, then you should be giving it all the attention it needs. • Create your own simple rituals that show you care for each other, such as leaving notes, a phone call or emailing each day.
This Month’s Crossword Solution
• Give each other a kiss when coming and going. Give plenty of hugs and try to laugh together. • Plan a regular "date" night once a week and stick to it.

ABOUT HERBAL MEDICINE
Herbalist and Naturopath by John Maher Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine, refers to the use of a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Recently, the World Health Organization estimated that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some aspect of their primary health care. Rathfarnham resident, John Maher, is a practicing Herbalist/Naturopath, with a lifelong interest it its benefits. He explained “My interest in herbs goes back to my childhood summers spent in Kerry with aunts who had remedies for all sorts of ailments. During a bad bout of colitis about six years ago, it was treatment with herbs and natural therapies which gave me the best results”. “My role as an Herbalist/Naturopath is to offer people a natural alternative of medicine to fit the health needs of the individual”. What kind of conditions can Herbal Medicine treat? Herbs are excellent for most acute conditions, for example respiratory - coughs, colds, sinusitis, digestive complaints - constipation, reflux, indigestion, insomnia, stress etc. but work equally well for long term complaints such as IBS, colitis, menstrual imbalances, arthritis, depression etc. (for more chronic conditions, longer treatment may be required). What can you expect from a consultation? The first consultation takes approximately 1 to 1½ hours as this allows me to build a complete picture of the individual’s symptoms and general state of health. Many aspects of their life will be asked about, such as diet, symptoms, sleep patterns, moods, current and past medication, and much more. Additional tools I use are tongue/pulse diagnosis and Iridology (the study of the coloured part of eye). Iridology, as a diagnostic tool, provides information on the patient’s constitution, inherited deficiencies, possible future health issues and also their strengths and adaptation mechanisms. Follow up consultations are normally shorter and occur 3-4 weeks from previous visit. 42 | ABOUT BALLINTEER
Is Herbal Medicine Safe? Yes. Most of us are familiar with herbal teas such as camomile, dandelion, nettle etc. and this is probably the most popular way to take herbs. Tinctures are now commonly available from health food shops. These refer to liquid alcohol extracts of plants, i.e. Echinacea drops. Most herbs are quite safe to take for all ages. During an herbal consultation, it is important that the patient’s full medical history is recorded before herbal formulae are prescribed, as possible herb/drug interactions need to be considered. As with any health care system it is important to understand, especially with chronic conditions that lasting results take time, commitment and a positive outlook. In saying that a lot of people taking herbal medication and implementing simple diet and life style changes, in the short term do see a decrease in stress levels, general increase to energy levels, improvement in sleep, feel more positive, are calmer and more alert.

ARIES
LIBRA
Take a brake Aries and take good stock of the role you yourself play in the latest dilemma you find yourself in. The problem exists as you continue to do your thinking inside the proverbial box, instead of taking a good long look at the overall long picture. Love is good when you work a little more on the romantic side.
A late holiday, or cruise perhaps? Is well starred for the fortunate Libran. Go on, take a loved one on the bargain trip of a lifetime, you wont regret it. This recession has been the catalyst to your impending lifestyle change. Well done Libra, you finally got with the programme and are finding the true balance of mind, body, senses and spirit.
TAURUS
SCORPIO
Well! well! Taurus. You have so much on your plate and so many choices in all areas of your life. What to do? It’s simple! Do nil for now and wait your time to make decisions based on current need circumstance. Romance leads you to an evening of formal wear and is a time and place where love can blossom all the way to commitment.
The arts are calling you to perform your unique brand of entertainment for the avidly awaiting crowd. So, whether its your special brand of painting or treading the boards or maybe even ice dancing. You are at your happiest earning a living doing what you love. Do not fret about love, when it’s real, it stays.
GEMINI
This autumnal season can be so good for you when it comes to you rejuvenating your weary batteries. Walking among natures’ fragrant greenery is just the aromatherapy you need. Soul-mating on this level of grounded understanding is the most satisfying basis for a working relationship.
You may feel tired and poorly rewarded for your efforts. But, you must realise this is not a life and death situation, rather a passing phase which can give you the opportunity to show your strength and unique talents. An offer to jet away to a foreign space is one not to be missed. Plenty of laughter keeps romance near.
SAGITTARIUS
CAPRICORN
An elder can talk sense, its up to you to listen well and learn. Your love life is your business and nobody can tell you how to feel, so, getting the balance between what makes good sense and downright interference is important. A job offer which has the potential to take you abroad on a regular basis is not to be sneezed at.
A career in computer technology is forecast for the ambitious Capricorn. It’s no harm to know as much as you can about computers as the forthcoming trend will take on a deviant, although similarly conducive trail. The next few weeks sees you following the path of publishing. Your work is more than acceptable. A word of caution: yours is just one opinion. Allow others have theirs.
LEO
AQUARIUS
Life’s lottery is set to be good to you at this time Leo. As you begin to reap the rewards of your personal efforts, your positivity soars to an all time high. You become a very sharing person to those you hold dear. Your natural gift to organise a charitable event is needed now. You and a partner could do with a decent break - a Greek island perhaps?
Cards advise that you remove yourself from the equation and see things from a totally different perspective. Life has so much to offer you but, you can sometimes not see the woods because the trees are in the way. Avoid pushing things out of the way, rather allow these things show you an alternative tomorrow.
VIRGO
PISCES
A Taurus or Capricorn can influence your luck this month. So, whether it’s numbers or names, you are sure to be the overall winner. Unattached? A stranger speaking a foreign tongue is set to capture your heart. An idea to make extra cash is financially viable. Talk to the relative experts. Reconciliation with a loved one is forecast.
As you prepare to go all out holistic in your thinking, a like-minded individual is watching your every move with unbiased admiration. You were always a most psychic individual and will not allow any influence other than your gut (spirit) tell you what to do or how to think. Yes, you are so loved! You get what you deserve so, treat love well.
