Tax Return Deadline Looms!

by John Bollard, Leonard & Company Tax Return fever will shortly begin, with the deadline of 31st October next looming even closer. If you file online you have until the 16th November to make your return. Under the self assessment system an individual with income apart from PAYE type income, should file a tax return every year.

Many individuals do not realise that if they have PAYE income and rental income then they are obliged under the self assessment system to file a tax return even if they have no net rental income after taking all the outgoings into account.

If they do not file they leave themselves open to penalties.

Commissioners have been writing recently to some tax payers asking them to clarify their position on mortgage interest. If you did not take out a new loan for a new house (not your first house) or top up a qualifying loan on your existing home since the 1st January 2003 you are not longer entitled to mortgage interest relief.

It makes financial sense to bring your tax affairs up to date and it really is not that painful or expensive if you engage an experienced professional firm such as Leonard & Company.

ABOUT RECIPE

Mediterranean Fish Stew with Rouille Croutons A quick and easy twist on a classic French recipe, this Mediterranean fish stew is full of the flavours of crab meat, Pernod and fennel.

Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes Serves 6 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 large red chilli, finely chopped 2 bulbs fennel, quartered 2 tbsp Pernod 100ml (4fl oz) Noilly Prat or other dry vermouth 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp tomato purée pinch saffron 1 dressed crab 250g (9oz) monkfish fillet, cubed 200g (7oz) roeless scallops 400g (14oz) raw, peeled king prawns 600g (1lb 5oz) mussels, scrubbed 2 tbsp flat-leaf parsley, chopped

For the rouille: 1 large garlic clove, crushed pinch saffron 1 large anchovy fillet 1 tsp harissa paste little lemon juice, to taste 125g (4.4oz) fresh mayonnaise For the croutons: 1 small baguette, diagonally sliced little olive oil 1. To make the rouille, pound down the garlic, saffron, anchovy, harissa and lemon juice in a mortar and pestle or mini chopper, then stir into the mayonnaise.

2. For the croutons, preheat the oven to 200°C, 180°C fan, 400°F, gas 6. Brush each side of the baguette slices with the oil then place on a wire rack in the oven for approx 10 minutes, until crisp. Dip the croutons into half of the parsley before serving.

3. Now make the stew. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil and add the onion. Cook for a few minutes, then add the garlic, chilli and fennel. Stir well and cook for a minute, then add the alcohol. Bring to the boil for a few minutes, then add the tomatoes, tomato purée and saffron. Season well with salt and freshly ground pepper.

4. Simmer for ten minutes, then add all of the fish, ending with the mussels. Cover and allow to cook for about five minutes, until the mussels have opened and all the fish has cooked through. Scatter over the remaining parsley. Ladle into bowls, serving the rouille and croutons on the side, together with grated Gruyère, if you like. The rouille should be served on top of the croutons for dunking in the stew.

Eat Your Greens! by www.mychild.ie Healthy eating for children is one of the most important parenting topics, but what do you do if your child is a fussy or difficult eater?

Mum, Hollie Smith, shares her top tips from her book, ‘Dealing with Difficult Eaters: Stop mealtimes becoming a battleground with fussy children’, co-written with Dr. Sandi Mann and Sally Child.

1. Be Cool Easier said than done, admittedly, but it’s true that attitude is everything when it comes to feeding children. Never let them see that their food issues are upsetting you – in some cases it will simply make things worse.

2. Be Resilient Whether you’re trying to expand the limited food horizons of a fussy eater, or overhaul the habits of a child with a weight problem, you’ll need to be consistent, firm and resolute.

3. Be A Foodie Get them in the kitchen, cooking their own food, and in the garden, growing it. Take them shopping, let them choose, allow them to prepare meals and snacks. Experiment, try something different every so often.

4. Be A Good Eater Yourself Sit at the table with them, eat your greens, keep your treat intake limited. You are the foremost influence on your children, in eating and everything else.

7. Be Well Informed Do your homework so you know what the basics of nutrition are – that way, you’ll know off the top of your head what healthy alternatives you can offer a child who is asking for junk food. There are many different foods out there… it’s just a matter of discovering them all.

8. Be United Get everyone else involved on your side. There’s not much point in dealing with a difficult eater one way, if someone else is dealing with it a different way.

9. Be Reasonable Maybe your little difficult eater just doesn’t like certain foods, or maybe they have a perfectly understandable preference for white bread.

Why not? A child should never be made to eat anything.

10. Be Moderate Don’t fret or obsess about food – apart from driving yourself insane, you may have the opposite effect to the one you were hoping for. What our kids eat is, and should be, something to care about and be concerned about. It’s all about balance.

5. Be Careful Don’t offer food as a bribe or reward, however desperate you get, and keep praise low-key. Be sure not to ‘label’ them – you may well have a difficult eater on your hands, but don’t call them one to their face.

6. Be Sensitive Watch out for the difficult eater with an underlying emotional need, and always treat the issue with care and understanding.

Highlighting - The Cell System of Parish Renewal: a Rich Harvest

by MeidhbhĂ­n NĂ­ Ă&#x161;rdail The cell system of parish renewal evolved from a Lenten course held in the parish of St. John the Evangelist in Ballinteer in 1990.

The curate at that time, Fr Michael Hurley, heard that in the St Eustorgio parish in Milan a European Workshop on the Parish Cell System of Evangelisation was being hosted by its parish priest, Don Pigi Perini.

Together with three of his parishioners, Fr Hurley travelled to Milan to learn at first hand how the cell experience there could translate to a parish in Dublin 16. What those attending witnessed there turned out to be the catalyst for establishing a Cell Community in the parish of Ballinteer and elsewhere in Ireland. And so, from its inception nineteen years ago, the Cell Community in Ireland has steadily grown and multiplied, with members living today in almost forty parishes throughout the country.

Celebrating the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;rich harvestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which is the Cell Community in Ireland, the 19th annual seminar will take place in the parish of St. John the Evangelist, Ballinteer, between the 9th and 11th October 2009.

Down through the years, the seminar has always attracted those wishing to set up a network of faith groups in their respective parishes. It has enabled them to see at first hand an important support structure, while encouraging them also to set up their own groups. For anybody wishing to experience a more living faith within community, the seminar will undoubtedly offer valuable insights and encouragement.

How does the cell experience express itself in a given parish? Essentially, groups of between four and twelve meet on a fortnightly basis (usually in the home of the cell group leader) for approximately an hour to an hour-and-a-half.

Meetings begin with the singing of a number of hymns from a booklet and prayer, and move on to voluntary sharing of a faith experience by those present. There then follows a Scripture passage and a recorded teaching on it.

Intercessory prayer and a cup of tea conclude proceedings.

In the specific context of Ireland, of course, ceall also happens to be the Irish-language equivalent of English â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Besides, ceall translates as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;churchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, and refers by extension to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a monastic settlement or foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Ceall incorporates what parish cell communities are about, namely a gathering together of its members in prayer in a specific location - a settlement or foundation if you like - while it also represents Church as a community of believers who strive to grow in intimacy with the Lord and in love of one another.

5 Ideas for a Stress Free Halloween

Costumes have become more elaborate (fewer bin liners!) and Halloween decorations more elaborate. But if you're a working parent, you probably want ideas for making Halloween safe and fun for the kids and easy for you.

1. Keep the Costume Simple Devoted mums sewing her childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Halloween costume from scratch is a myth. The most elaborate costumes I see at Halloween are shop bought. Homemade costumes tend to be dress-up clothes or creative uses of polonecks and bedsheets. So, unless you adore crafts, keep it simple. Your little one will be delighted to wear their favourite tutu or fire fighter's helmet, with colour co-ordinated clothes you already own. If you or your child want something shop bought, check out eBay, dublinwaste.ie and your local charity shop for deals. You can find gorgeous costumes for under â&#x201A;Ź10 each. It's certainly easier than staying up all night making a monkey costume!

Find a way to make your child visible to cars, whether it's light-up shoes, a glow-in-the-dark wrist band, etc.

4. Choose Sweet Free Treats I would never want to be the killjoy who gives apples to the children. But, there's something to be said for handing out treats that won't rot their teeth. Little children may find it too hard to stay up past 7pm, so go ahead and take them right after dinner. Many parents I know leave work early on Halloween, to eat earlier and go out trick or treating. It's tempting to stretch the kids' bedtime but this can lead to meltdowns.

DLR Librariesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Local History Collection

Dundrum Post Office

Dundrum Library has a small but growing collection of local history books, articles, periodicals and reference material. The focus of the material is Dundrum and the surrounding area.

We have files and articles on historical buildings like Airfield, Marlay Park and Taney Parish, as well as events, festivals and local historical figures such as the Yeats Sisters and Padraig Pearse. The library keeps back issues of various history and local periodicals such as the Genealogical Society of Ireland Journal, History Ireland Magazine and Three Rock Panorama. A number of databases such as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Ask about Irelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; are also available online from the Library website www.dlrcoco.ie/library Borrowers have online access to websites such as Ordnance Survey Irelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Digital Historical Map Viewer, Griffithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Valuation 1847 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 1864 and the Irish Times Newspaper Archive on the libraryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s six internet access points, which are free to use. The collection is available for reference by borrowers of DLRCC Library Service and the general public.

All are welcome to browse through the material and we provide a photocopy service in the branch.

There are also local history collections in each of the other Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Public Libraries, the largest of which is located in Dun Laoghaire Library. As well the electronic resources mentioned above it also houses the 1901 and 1911 census for the county on microfilm, the Thomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 32 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

Directories in hard copy dating back to 1905 and on microfilm dating back to 1838, every electoral register as far back as 1948 and county council minutes going back to 1885. The library in Dun Laoghaire also a large collection of editions of the Irish Times on microfilm and a selection of other newspapers and periodicals on both microfilm and microfiche. It also houses historic maps of the county area dating back three centuries and a range of old photographs of people and places of interest.

Their collection also includes an extensive collection of books and periodicals covering topics of national, regional and local interest and a collection of DVDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Tapes and CD-Româ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on historical, genealogical and cultural topics. Local History Librarians over the years have also compiled a collection of files on a wide range of local places and topics with a view to quick consultation for project and research purposes.

We are always looking to add to our collection and are delighted to receive any suitable items: such as maps, letters, books, articles, photographs or any other items of interest.

ABOUT HERBAL MEDICINE

Herbalist and Naturopath

by John Maher Herbal medicine, also called botanical medicine, refers to the use of a plant's seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes. Recently, the World Health Organization estimated that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some aspect of their primary health care.

Rathfarnham resident, John Maher, is a practicing Herbalist/Naturopath, with a lifelong interest it its benefits.

He explained “My interest in herbs goes back to my childhood summers spent in Kerry with aunts who had remedies for all sorts of ailments. During a bad bout of colitis about six years ago, it was treatment with herbs and natural therapies which gave me the best results”.

“My role as an Herbalist/Naturopath is to offer people a natural alternative of medicine to fit the health needs of the individual”.

What kind of conditions can Herbal Medicine treat?

Herbs are excellent for most acute conditions, for example respiratory - coughs, colds, sinusitis, digestive complaints - constipation, reflux, indigestion, insomnia, stress etc. but work equally well for long term complaints such as IBS, colitis, menstrual imbalances, arthritis, depression etc. (for more chronic conditions, longer treatment may be required).

What can you expect from a consultation?

The first consultation takes approximately 1 to 1½ hours as this allows me to build a complete picture of the individual’s symptoms and general state of health.

Many aspects of their life will be asked about, such as diet, symptoms, sleep patterns, moods, current and past medication, and much more. Additional tools I use are tongue/pulse diagnosis and Iridology (the study of the coloured part of eye). Iridology, as a diagnostic tool, provides information on the patient’s constitution, inherited deficiencies, possible future health issues and also their strengths and adaptation mechanisms. Follow up consultations are normally shorter and occur 3-4 weeks from previous visit.

Is Herbal Medicine Safe?

Yes. Most of us are familiar with herbal teas such as camomile, dandelion, nettle etc. and this is probably the most popular way to take herbs. Tinctures are now commonly available from health food shops. These refer to liquid alcohol extracts of plants, i.e. Echinacea drops. Most herbs are quite safe to take for all ages.

During an herbal consultation, it is important that the patient’s full medical history is recorded before herbal formulae are prescribed, as possible herb/drug interactions need to be considered.

As with any health care system it is important to understand, especially with chronic conditions that lasting results take time, commitment and a positive outlook. In saying that a lot of people taking herbal medication and implementing simple diet and life style changes, in the short term do see a decrease in stress levels, general increase to energy levels, improvement in sleep, feel more positive, are calmer and more alert.
