ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

Take Years Off Your Face by Juliette O’Grady, Dundrum Acupuncture What if you could get 5 to 10 years off your face without going through surgery or any type of invasive procedure? Facial acupuncture can do that for you. What does it do? • Relaxes muscle tone. • It increases circulation therefore it oxygenates the skin. • Increases collagen production. • Tightens the pores and brightens the eyes. • Keeps acne skin under control. • Nourishes the skin giving you a healthy complexion with a natural glow. • Moisturises the skin from the inside and gives rosy cheeks to people with dull, tired looking skin. How does it work? The treatment is based on the principles of Traditional

Chinese Medicine which involves the insertion of very small and very thin disposable needles into acupuncture points of the face. The needles are only inserted superficially and on insertion of the needles there will be an increase of blood and Qi circulation to the local area and also collagen production is stimulated. This collagen will help to fill out lines and reduce wrinkles giving firmness to the skin and producing a healthy glowing complexion. A full acupuncture treatment is also given to help you detox and boost your immune system. Because feeling good makes you look fantastic! Juliette trained with Dr Vincent Carroll MD at Lansdowne College of Acupuncture and Complementary Medicine. In addition to holding a diploma in Acupuncture and Certification in Clinical Medicine, Juliette is also a Reiki Master and an ITEC qualified massage therapist.

ABOUT STYLE

Have a Stylish Christmas! by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant With the festive season approaching, many of us are watching the pennies this year as never before, I was thinking about the many ways to update an existing outfit with the use of accessories. If your budget doesn’t allow for a completely new look, then take some time and consider how to update what you have with a few additional well chosen pieces. What will work with what you already have? This will depend on whether your outfit is already detailed or plain, but if we assume that you have the ubiquitous “little black dress” in the wardrobe then the options are many and varied. For “little black dress” think of any combination of dark separates and consider the following options: Adding a Belt – would your dress/separates work with a belt? If you have the hourglass or triangular body shape then your waist is a great asset and drawing attention to it with a gorgeous belt could be the answer. Remember too that adding a belt where you don’t naturally have a waist can give the illusion of one, especially if worn slightly lower than the natural waistline. For those that are ‘straight’, belts are designed to be worn on the waist and those with a slight curve are designed to be worn on the hips with the belt, sitting slightly higher at the back and lower at the front. This allows the buckle or fastening to lie flat at the front.

Add a splash of colour with either jewellery or scarves can help brighten your complexion. As we mature, wearing black near the face can sometimes seem harsh. Brightening the neck area with added colour is easy and very effective. Footwear and Handbags. This year there is a fabulous range of dressy pumps and ballet flats as well as all heel heights in between. Remember, that wedges support the full length of your foot more than stilettos and are available in a range of heights and styles. Add a stunning handbag and you’re off! Whatever you do over festive season ladies, I hope you have a great time and feel fabulous. Don’t hesitate to call me for advice on your personalised style package and getting the most out of your wardrobe. Merry Christmas

Necklaces – these do a great job of distracting the eye. Long necklaces can elongate your neck and draw the eye down, creating length which also acts as a slimming aid. If you want to draw attention upwards then try multiplying several necklaces to create a dramatic statement. Knitwear or Scarves – from colourful pashminas to shrugs, scarves and lightweight loose long cardigans, there is plenty to choose from. Decide what length or shape suits you best, whether it’s a small shrug, tie-wrap cardigan or a longer length waistcoat or jacket. This is where you can embellish with sparkle or glitz. 8 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT RECIPE

Saffron Turkey with Wild Rice and Cranberry Stuffing Most of us enjoy turkey at Christmas, so we thought we would publish Phil Vickery's recipe for success, with a fab stuffing! Serves: 12 Prep time: 30 mins Cooking time: 3 hrs 22 mins approx For the stuffing: 1 tbsp olive oil 50g butter 2 onions, chopped 2 large sprigs rosemary, leaves only, chopped 100g cooked wild and long grain rice 50g dried cranberries 100g dried apricots, roughly chopped 175g fresh white breadcrumbs 6 good quality pork and herb sausages, skinned 1 lemon, finely grated rind 1 egg, beaten For the turkey: 5.6kg turkey, giblets removed 1 lemon, halved 1 bay leaf 50g butter 1/2 tsp saffron threads Method: 1. Heat the oil and butter in a saucepan and fry the onion and rosemary for 5-6 mins. Remove from the heat and stir in the remaining stuffing ingredients until well combined. Season. 2. Preheat the oven to 190째C/gas 5. Melt the butter in a small saucepan, stir in the saffron threads and leave to cool slightly. 3. Push some of the stuffing into the neck end of the bird packing it right up to the breast meat. Secure the neck skin with cocktail sticks. Roll the remaining stuffing into balls [these can be cooked separately for 30 minutes] 4. Weigh the turkey and calculate the cooking time at 20 minutes per kg + 90 mins at the end. Push the lemon halves and bayleaf into the cavity and place in a roasting tin. Brush the whole bird with the saffron butter and season well. Cover with foil and roast. Remove the foil and baste with any remaining saffron butter and roast uncovered for the last hour of cooking time. To check to see if the turkey is cooked push a metal skewer into the thickest part of the leg - if the juices run clear the turkey is cooked if the juices are slightly pink pop back into the oven for a further 15 minutes before checking again. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 20-30 minutes before carving. 10 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT WINE

Choosing Wine Wisely This Festive Season by Donal Tuomey, Mitchell & Son, Grange Rd Ah, the distant sound of sleigh bells - the Festive Season approaches and so too the list of things to do. Well, allow me to make one task a stress-free and enjoyable one - choosing wines to enjoy in the weeks ahead. I have suggested what I consider to be the best wine to compliment the season. They are not only well chosen, but well priced!

For the special Christmas Day lunch I propose two options in white that will stand up to the strong flavours of turkey and ham - a stunning 1er Cru Chablis by Denis Race at €24.50 - great value for what is an exceptional wine. Or, you could go for a quality Sancerre by Raimbault Pineau at €18.50. If you are serving smoked salmon or goat’s cheese this is a match made in heaven. For the red wine I suggest a French Rhone - Chateau Neuf De Pape Grand Veneur (€28.95) - which is showing layers of ripe fruit and lots of complexity. Alternatively, go for the stunning Naughton’s Flight Shiraz from South Africa at €18.50. Be sure to decant the Shiraz two hours before serving and I promise you a memorable experience. Enjoy your Christmas pudding with a nicely chilled glass of Mitchells Gold from Bordeaux at €15.50 - an international award winner, displaying exotic fruits, orange and honey in abundance. And after lunch why not try one of our Barao de Vilar Ports from €15.50. For those looking for something truly sparkling, don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to try the Montaudon Reserve Premier Champagne. At €34.50 it is hard to beat.

To start, how about the perfect pre-dinner wine for your guests, the Bortolomiol Prosecco at €11.50 - sparkling, light and refreshing and hitting just the right note. Another ideal white would be Mitchells Sauvignon Blanc at €10.50, a firm favourite with many of our customers. For Sherry lovers we have the full range of the highly recommended Lustau sherries to suit all tastes from €16.95. If you prefer red wine, there is Mitchell’s Claret - a medium-bodied Bordeaux with lots of ripe fruit and pleasant aromas of spice and vanilla at €11.95. Another attractive and popular red, that’s super soft, is our Teroldego Reserva from Italy at €13.50. 12 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

For these and other quality choices (as well as monthly special offers starting at just €7), why not drop into our shop on Grange Road (adjoining Lidl) and pick up your Christmas Gift Catalogue? We will gift wrap all purchases and can deliver nationwide! What’s more, our friendly knowledgeable staff will be happy to assist you in your choice. If you want to give someone the gift of knowledge, what about a place on our next introductory six week Wine Course? It starts in-store on Monday 25th January, 2010 and is aimed at satisfying the beginner’s thirst for wine know-how. An ideal gift to yourself or family member. Places are limited to 25. Finally, may I wish all our valued customers a very happy Christmas and a prosperous 2010. Slainté! Donal Tuomey, Mitchell & Son Wine Merchants Tel: 4933 816/7

ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS

Family Law Mediation by Brendan Dillon, Dillon Solicitors Many people associate marital breakup with letters between solicitors, trips to court, huge legal bills and an enormous amount of stress and emotional trauma for both spouses and, in particular, their children.

There is little doubt that by engaging in a mediated process the parties will reduce their legal costs significantly from the costs that would be incurred if they went to court. There is also the added advantage of retaining control of the outcome as mediation can only be successful if the parties themselves reach an agreement which is obviously much better than asking a judge to impose an outcome on the parties. I myself have extensive experience in the area of family law, having advised on all aspects of family law for many years and trained as a family law mediator. If you have any queries in relation to how family law mediation might be of interest or assistance to you please do not hesitate to contact us and we would be happy to explain the process in detail.

In recent years however there has been a move away from the traditional means of resolving family law disputes.

For more information on family mediation or any aspect of family law please contact Dillons by phone on 2960 666, email at info@dillon.ie or log onto our website www.dillon.ie

A number of years ago a family law resolution model known as collaborative law was developed here. This involves both solicitors working together with the two spouses and all four parties meeting on several occasions with a view to the resolving in a mature and constructive fashion all of the issues which require to be agreed in relation to property, other assets, maintenance, custody and access, pensions, taxation and succession act issues. In the last six months a number of solicitors in Dublin have trained as family lawyer mediators. Mediation is a process where the husband and the wife attend a number of sessions of mediation with a view to resolving their issues and coming up with a set of proposals which is then converted into a binding agreement by their solicitors. The role of the mediator is to facilitate the discussions between the husband and the wife. The mediator can provide information but not legal advice. The mediator’s role is to maintain a focus on the resolution of the issues and look for ways and mechanisms as to unlock the difficulties. The training which was conducted through a U.K. model known as Resolution which has been operating successfully in the U.K. for the last fifteen years is based on a child centered approach to the resolution of family law issues. The experience in the United Kingdom has demonstrated quite clearly that the impact of family law breakup on children is greatly alleviated if the parties can reach a resolution of the issues between them in a constructive and mature manner, without having to engage in lengthy and confrontational legal proceedings. 14 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN

Styling Your Home This Christmas by Sadhbh Fitzgibbon, Sky Interiors Christmas comes but once a year, but when it comes our thoughts turn to more than gifts, good friends and best wishes. Getting your Christmas decorations "just right" can be a labour of love, or for some an annual challenge!

ribbon around the neck and you have a beautiful candle with Christmas charm. You could nestle the candle in peppermints, nuts, or even sand if you wish. Try grouping several together for a dramatic evening effect.

4. Start a new tradition After taking part in Showhouse for RTE earlier this year I really learned a lot about the amazing things you can create when restricted to a tight budget. Here are 5 budget conscious tips for the festive season:

1. Keep it simple Having a unified theme helps the look to flow from room to room or tree to table. Decorate only the main rooms in your home that will be enjoyed by your family and your guests. This makes the whole process a little less overwhelming and if you concentrate on a limited number of areas you’ll be sure to get your look right and have a happy, healthy and stylish Christmas.

2. Get back to basics Go for a walk and gather a collection of branches. Spray-paint the branches in silver or gold; pop them in a vase and voilà…elegant Christmas decor. Use them to decorate the mantle, intertwine with fairy lights and add a few inexpensive glass balls. Take it a step further and tastefully tie some festive ribbon, or hang some simple decorations from them.

For example start a ‘Christmas Star / Santa Collection’, adding a new piece to the collection every year. Your family can look forward to choosing your yearly star/Santa together every year. It will be a fond memory for everyone, and can be passed on to future generations. Remember, it's the memories you're interested in here, not a collectable based on monetary value.

5. Give the gift of baking This has been made so easy with websites such as www.videojug.com. You can watch simple 5-minute videos, some by Michelin Star chefs, showing you exactly how to make your festive dish. It’s really great, as you’ll see exactly what you should be doing and how it should look at each stage. This makes it almost fool proof, worth the effort and creates a thoughtful gift, sure to impress your friends or family!

3. Recycle Place a tea light candle into a cleaned out small glass yoghurt or mayonnaise jar. Tie festive 18 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT GARDENING

Round The Garden in December by Tom Percy Garden work is difficult in December and January but it is a very good time to tidy up by carrying out winter digging, cleaning tools and pots, tidying sheds and repairing fences. Damage to lawns in the winter is caused by wet rather than cold weather. Long periods of mild wet conditions starve the roots of air as they are trying to grow. Spike the lawn with a garden fork or use a machine to scarify, then top dress with a mixture of sand and loam, brushing it into the holes.

If the weather permits now is a good time to dig over any ground. This is especially useful if you have clay soil as it gives the winter weather a chance to break the clods down before spring arrives. If you didn’t dig in manure in the autumn, it can be done now as long as the manure is well rotted. Consider investing in a garden shredder to shred your woody prunings. Apart from being more environmentally friendly than burning or binning them, the shredded wood makes a perfect mulch for your flower beds or you can add the results to the compost heap.

Winter is pruning time for many shrubs and trees. Variegated plants may revert to being green all over and these green shoots of evergreens and deciduous shrubs need to be pruned out in winter. Protect buried bulbs from mice and squirrels by laying panels of chicken wire across the ground. When your early bulbs such as snowdrops, scillas and muscari begin to flower you can clear away leaves and other debris from around them but avoid forking or hoeing the surface as this can cause damage.

ABOUT LOCAL SCHOOLS

Highlighting - Ballinteer Community School officially opened by Minister for Education by Fiona Murdoch The new Ballinteer Community School building was officially opened by Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe, on October 21st.

O’Keeffe praised the teachers for “the dedication, the commitment and the spark of genius” that they portray. He also singled out for praise past pupil Eleanor Jones McAuley, who achieved 560 points in this year’s Leaving Certificate and is now studying Music at Trinity College. McAuley performed a cello solo during the opening ceremony. The new building, which can cater for up to 600 pupils, includes three science labs, two technology rooms, two resource rooms, home economics facilities, a sports hall and a gym. It replaces the original school buildings, which were erected in 1974 and demolished last year. “Our new building is a beacon, signalling a tradition of ongoing growth and development,” said principal, Dr Austen Corcoran.

Minister for Education & Science, Mr Batt O'Keeffe TD, Geography & Irish teacher Mr Richard O'Donovan and principal Dr Austen Corcoran.

The Minister cut the ribbon and delivered a speech, before the school choir performed a mass specially composed for the occasion. The Mass of St Brigid was written by school choirmistress Mary Kelly, formerly a conductor of the Frascati Singers. A number of politicians, councillors and local dignitaries attended, including TDs Tom Kitt, Eamon Ryan, Olivia Mitchell, Alan Shatter and George Lee. Following mass, there was a multidenominational blessing of the school by Fr Richard Behan, Fr PJ Breen and the Rev Canon Horace McKinley. “Ballinteer Community School is a magnificent educational landmark,” said O’Keeffe. “It offers a composite programme of after-school activities and an integration of local clubs, thus providing for a holistic education.” 22 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

“Ballinteer Community School has had many achievements, academically and otherwise. It pioneered the integration of students with disabilities in mainstream classrooms and its best practice has now been taken up by other schools and incorporated in legislation. The school is a focal point in the community and is dedicated to community needs throughout the week. Some of the most important work of the area takes place here daily.” An all-weather pitch is being developed in conjunction with Ballinteer St John’s GAA, which Dr Corcoran says will be a template for such joint ventures in other schools.

The "NORAD tracks Santa" program has been around since 1955. Last year this website was visited by millions of people from all around the world who wanted to know Santa's whereabouts. By the use of radar, satellites, Santa Cams and jet fighter aircraft, the North American Air Defense (NORAD) tracks Santa's progress around the globe. Starting on Christmas Eve you can track Santa live as he makes his historical journey and see pictures as the NORAD Santa Cams take photos of Santa and his reindeer. You can even send Santa an email. His elves, Chuckles and Buckley, will be sure he gets your mail.

Final word to Audrey “I’m certain that our clients will love the new salon and enjoy the standards of luxury we are trying to deliver. The luxury is for them and they deserve it.”

“We were approached by ladies from the Muslim community who wanted to avail of our services but for religious/cultural reasons were uncomfortable removing their headscarves in a public. They asked us whether we would consider facilitating them by allocating a private area. The new salon now provides a completely private room for anyone wishing privacy for the full range of services provided at Total Hair Care”, explained Audrey. The salon also offers a separate Barber Shop, Full Hairdressing Salon, Beauty Rooms and Private Rooms (by appointment) for clients who wish to have total privacy.

ABOUT CHRISTMAS STRESS

Reduce Stress this Christmas by Ian Epstein Christmas is typically one of the most stressful times of the year. The expense of buying gifts, the pressure of shopping and most importantly the pressure of family togetherness can all combine into being under pressure. Some practical tips can help you reduce your stress. Gifts Change the way that you buy gifts, instead of buying a gift for everyone have a Kris Kringle where everyone draws a name out of a hat and buys a present only for that person. Or, buy presents for children only and set a limit on the cost of the presents. Make a list of all gifts you want to buy before you go shopping. There is nothing worse than wandering around a shopping centre waiting for inspiration to strike. Do your shopping early, last minute shopping causes high stress. Buy a few small extras just in case you have a few unexpected guests. Christmas Dinner If you are hosting dinner - delegate, there is no need to do everything yourself. Buy some non-perishable foods.

TO ADVERTISE TELEPHONE 49 9 3022

Pre-cook the ham & turkey on Christmas Eve. You can also prepare vegetables and potatoes in advance! Family & Friends Stress and anxiety are common during the festive season, so avoid known topics that will cause tension. Use relaxation techniques such as deep breathing to deal with anxious moments. Plan some after dinner activities to relieve tension. Don’t self medicate with alcohol. Little Extras Write Christmas cards at beginning of December and keep a list of who you have sent them to. Buy Christmas stamps book as you get one free stamp (all helps!) Be Healthy Even though it’s the season to be jolly, too much food and drink is harmful, do it in moderation. Don’t drink and drive. Get enough sleep. Regular exercise will help you through the festive season. Have a Very Happy and Stress Free Christmas and a Relaxing New Year!

Tarot-Scopes

BY MAGS

ARIES

LIBRA

Allowing yourself the luxury of higher education within the realms the paranormal, is put temporarily on the back burner. Christmas means so much to you that all energies are focussed on the festive celebrations. Your love decision was right for you at that time. Now, nostalgia and yearning may well take you back to what was lost but now is found.

Stop worrying and overly fretting about your love life, rather, begin to accept that love that you want is there, or just about to enter your life for good. This Christmas, through the power of your prayers, has evolved your thinking and expectations to a deeper level of understanding, not just within your own surroundings, but within the realms of the universe.

TAURUS

SCORPIO

Happy holidays Taurus. You have wished for and are about to receive your desired dreams at this, the most precious time of your personal year. The chain of events are at last set in motion which will ultimately lead to your commitment to the one true soul mate of destiny. Artistically, you cannot lose as your talents are peaking now. Be extra generous to those who need you.

A marriage is forecast in this spread. Cards advise that you, for once take the lead and do not be backward in doing what you do best: organising. The over-abundant festivities can leave you feeling deflated, but you bounce back with a purpose. A new year trip has nothing short of a magical influence on your psyche. A love pact made now can last eternally.

GEMINI

SAGITTARIUS

Putting your emotional life on pause for a few days is the way to go. You have much to do and must focus on the task at hand. An unexpected trip abroad breaks a pattern and is needed for you to take proper stock of situations which you may well have magnified out of all proportion. Love may appear very basic and non-exciting, but is in fact, very real and warm.

Well Sagittarius! The life you wish to live is in your hands. Don’t miss the signs lest you should miss out on the fundamental basis for happiness. True quality time never came out of a persons wallet and indeed never can. Yes! You are so loved and your intuitions are correct in matters of the heart. Your dream abode is attainable and needs your attention now.

CANCER

CAPRICORN

The Yule tide season is especially happy for you as you are in your personal energy time. The shoppers paradise abroad cheers you and you find yourself making plans to travel again even before you are back. A family reunion goes rather well and you are the perfect host. Don’t give up on the job front as the positive aspects are more prevalent than the negatives.

This wonderful Yuletide season is the right time to impart your innermost feelings to a loved one. A choice of whether to take up a position abroad, or weather the financial storm at home is taking most of your precious energies. A study of biblical time and lands is a project worth doing. Take time to revel in the festivities as the new year brings huge, though welcome changes.

LEO

AQUARIUS

A message from beyond the grave for you Leo…‘play the music!’ and do not give in to melancholy. Life is so good for you and you must live this to the absolute full. A meeting with your friends at the coffee shop in town, is the time and place where the plans are formed which, in effect, is the chain of events that in time, shall present your destiny to you.

The Christmas religious ceremonies have such a nostalgic affect on you. This is so good for your psyche as you endeavour to make a better effort with those you love from now on. Your thoughts on business are by no means thrown to the four winds, rather, this is the time to initiate the start of your future career. don’t allow love take a back seat at any time this holiday.

VIRGO

PISCES

You cannot be at the top of the pinnacle unless you strive, step by step to attain the right to be there. Truly spiritual thoughts dominate your thinking this holy season. When you are of the mind to behave charitably towards the less fortunate…run with it. Your actions shall have a most wonderful affect on the karma due to you in the foreseeable future.

Meditation can help you clear your headspace and thus allow you concentrate on important issues as they arise, not all at once where nothing at all reaches completion. Work is on the cards and you must be ready for the improved challenges ahead. Sure! Changes are afoot, but this does not mean misery, rather life is steering you to contentment and harmony.
