ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS

Engaging with

– A Local Gem! by Fiona Tuomey

Ah l’amour! Not confined to the month of February, but certainly a month where hundreds of people decide to pop the question and propose marriage. So, let’s talk engagement rings. Engagement rings are traditionally given as a symbol of love and commitment between two people. You may be looking for an engagement ring for a surprise proposal, you may be looking for your own or maybe you are browsing with your partner. Whatever the situation, FitzGibbon Jewellers have the answer! Adrian FitzGibbon & Family have been in the jewellery trade for the past 40 years. Located on Butterfield Avenue in Rathfarnham Shopping Centre for the last 16 years, FitzGibbon Jewellers have a fantastic range of engagement rings and diamond jewellery. Adrian, along with his sister Valerie and experienced staff, have built up a reputation among customers for providing quality goods and a superb customer service. Whatever your budget or style, you can be sure of finding it in their store. I spoke with Adrian’s sister Valerie and asked her why readers should drop into FitzGibbons if they are looking for an engagement ring? “Choosing an engagement ring, or any diamond, is a very special purchase. We pride ourselves on our ability to listen to our customers and match their desires and budget with a well chosen diamond. Our designs vary from classic single stones (solitaires), single stones with shoulder stones and also three stone (trilogy) rings. Some people may even decide to wear an eternity ring as an engagement ring; there are no strict rules to follow.”

Colour refers to a diamond's lack of colour, grading the whiteness of a diamond. A colour grade of D is the highest possible, while Z is the lowest. Clarity is a measure of the number and size of the tiny imperfections that occur in almost all diamonds. Many of these imperfections are microscopic and do not affect a diamond's beauty in any discernible way.” Well, as the song goes, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but let’s not confine it to the newly engaged! FitzGibbon’s also have a fantastic range of diamond pendants, diamond necklaces and diamond bracelets in their range. As Valerie explained “Our diamond range includes diamond pendants, from our classic single stone (solitaire) range, diamond crosses and a collection of contemporary designs. We also have a range of diamond earrings to match almost every design, if you are looking for a gift set. Our diamond pendants all include an 18ct gold chain, specially selected to look sleek, subtle and keep the focus on the pendant itself”. To celebrate the Valentine’s Day, FitzGibbon Jewellers are offering all readers a stunning 25% off all diamond jewellery throughout the month of February. Don’t fret if your budget doesn’t allow for a sparkling purchase. You can always leave in an older piece which can be cleaned, repaired or remodeled and brought back to life. There’s always a way to get the sparkle into your loved one’s life!!

So, what should people look out for when choosing a diamond? “Most people have heard of the four C's in Diamonds 1 Carat, 2 Cut, 3 Colour and 4 Clarity, but they are not sure what this means. Carat is specifically a measure of a diamond's weight. We tend to evaluate diamond size by viewing it from the top because that is how diamonds are presented to us when set into a ring. Cut is a diamond's most important characteristic. It has the greatest overall influence on a diamond's beauty and sparkle. Always select the highest cut grade within your budget.

ABOUT HEATING

Staying Warm this Winter by Brian McGarry, Plumber As the weather gets colder and heating bills rise, there are many low cost options which will help you to reduce your bills. You know that closing doors and windows, adding insulation, installing double glazing and turning off radiators in rooms which are not in use all help. Here are a few you may not have considered:

LPG or pellet boilers. You can find more information about the efficiency of boilers and where to purchase them on www.sei.ie/harp

Finally, if you book your boiler service before 28th February 2010, I will also give you a FREE central heating survey!

Turn Your Heating Down Just 1ºC can knock 10% off your heating bill! Keep your thermostat at 20ºC. Programme Your Heat Get a programmable thermostat or programmable radiator controls to vary temperatures throughout the day, keeping the heat down when not needed. Follow the 30-Minute Rule Set the heating to switch off 30 minutes before bedtime, and set it to turn on 30 minutes before you get up in the morning. Take a Shower Consider a shower instead of a bath - a shower usually uses about a fifth of the energy of a full bath. You might also consider installing a low-flow shower head to reduce the amount of hot water being used. Get Your Boiler Serviced Have your boiler inspected and serviced by a professional every year and you will save a minimum of €150 a year! An annual boiler service will reduce the likelihood of breakdown, save money, reduce CO2 emissions and improve your boiler's reliability and safety. Remember, by law, only an RGII member can service a gas boiler. If you have a boiler older than 15 years then it is likely that during the next few years you will have to replace it on reliability grounds. Change it now and start saving immediately! If you have a natural gas supply then it is likely to be the lowest cost option in terms of both boiler installation cost and running cost. If you don’t have a natural gas supply then the choice is between oil, 8 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT LOCAL FUNDRAISING

Highlighting - Cooking up a Storm for Sam by Sandra McKenna Sam McMahon was born on 16th February, 2001 at The National Maternity Hospital in Dublin. He arrived 12 days early and barely tipped the scales at 5 pounds. He lives in Knocklyon with his Mum (Caroline), Dad (Brian) and older brother Ben.

from his new culinary guide and cookbook, “Home Chef”, at 8pm. Determined to raise the standards of home cooking, Neven Maguire will demonstrate how to transfer his expertise from the restaurant to the domestic kitchen, offering expert advice to both the novice and experienced cook. Sam is bright, out-going and fun to be with. He loves reading, playing PS3 and watching TV. He likes to swim and wants to learn to play the drums. His favourite colour is red.

On 14th November, 2008 he was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA). Although there were many small hints that there was something different about Sam, it took many years of doctors’ visits and tests to establish that he has FA. Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder.

Why not support The Sam McMahon Trust and Freidreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance by buy a pair of tickets for this fantastic event? Tickets, which would make an ideal Valentine’s gift for a foodie, are priced at just €25 each. Tickets are available from www.menupages.ie/sam or call 086 819 3321. You can also learn more about Friedreich’s Ataxia and the Sam McMahon Trust on www.sammcmahontrust.ie

Onset of symptoms can vary from childhood to adulthood and can include loss of coordination (ataxia) in the arms and legs; energy deprivation and muscle loss; vision impairment, hearing loss, slurred speech; aggressive scoliosis (curvature of the spine); diabetes mellitus; and a serious heart condition. While the mental capabilities of people with FA remain completely intact, the progressive loss of coordination and muscle strength caused by FA leads to motor incapacitation and the full-time use of a wheelchair. There is currently no treatment or cure for it.

Neven Maguire

The Sam McMahon Trust and Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance Charity are to benefit from a cookery demonstration by award-winning chef and restaurateur Neven Maguire in the D4 Berkeley Hotel on 8th March 2010.

Following a drinks reception at 7pm, Neven will demonstrate how to cook some great recipes taken 12 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS

Did you know? Focus on Wills by Brendan Dillon, Dillon Solicitors If you die leaving behind a spouse and children, your children will be automatically entitled to share one third of what you own. This may not be what you intend. Brendan Dillon

If you separate or divorce having previously made a will, the provisions of this will remain valid until you make a new will. If you die leaving a will your spouse has a legal right. This will vary. If you have no children your spouse will be entitled to one half of your estate. If you have children, your spouse will be entitled to one third of your estate.

Dillon Solicitors are donating €25.00 for each will made as a result of this article to the Haiti Disaster Fund. Please phone our office at 296 0666 today to make an appointment.

When someone dies having made a will, there is a process which follows which involves proving that the will was valid. This is commonly referred to as taking out probate. If there is no will, the deceased’s next of kin can apply to take out a grant of administration in relation to the estate? So, why is it so important to make a will? • You get to decide who benefits from your estate. • You can minimise the tax paid by your next of kin on your death. • You can set up a trust for any minor children. • You can appoint guardians for your children. • You can make gifts to charity or non family members if you wish. • You can make provision for a child or relation with special needs. 14 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT GARDENING

Round The Garden in February by Tom Percy February is a month for preparation in the garden, so here are some top tips to get your garden ready for the Spring. Prepare Check the potato bed for any leftover potatoes to avoid passing on diseases or blight. Apply compost or rotted manure to the new potato bed and fork in. Roses will be looking for manure or (if you're lucky enough to find some) cow dung. This is the month for rock gardens to be dressed with gritty loam. Look out for any plants that have been lifted by frost and firm them in. While doing this, divide and replant any specimens you'd like more of in the rockery.

You can plant any roses this month, but do remember that if you do so, you will need to prune them after about four weeks. Seeds, such as antirrhinums and verbena should be sown and given gentle heat, but balsam, begonias, cannas, cyclamen, fuchsia, lobelia and petunias should be sown directly from the packet to the soil. Prune February is a good month to prune gooseberries and currants. With currants you should shorten the side shoots down to one bud and remove the old stems from the centre of the bush.

Now is the time to check that bulbs haven't been attacked by mice or snails. Plant Broad beans and early peas can be sown in February to give a May and June harvest. Shallots can also be planted now, although they will do better if covered with a cloche.

Two people of similar height and body shape can still be differently proportioned and therefore would need to be mindful of this when choosing clothes. ABOUT LIFE COACHING

How Do You Stay Motivated in 2010? by Ita Breagy, Alive & Kicking The New Year is upon us and indeed a new decade. We have high expectations that THIS year is going to be the best year ever. Let me ask you a question? What active steps have you taken in order to make this year different. Becoming and staying Motivated is not as easy as it sounds. Knowing what motivates you is the key to this. So ask yourself some questions. What exactly is it that motivates you? Is it money? Satisfaction at getting a job well done? Knowing you are fulfilling your purpose, working towards a goal? Or is it something completely different? Only you can decide what it is that motivates you.

rise and as you achieve your goals and targets you will experience great satisfaction and this will be the driving force to keep you going. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Be prepared for some failures. Failure is just one step closer to success. Best of luck and remember to enjoy the process. If you would like some professional assistance with this or any other topic, Alive and Kicking are running some one day Personal Development Workshops on Saturday February 27th and Saturday March 20th in Pembroke Cottage, Dundrum. For further details please contact Ita on 087 277 5242 or email ita@aliveandkicking.ie

One of the best and easiest ways to find out what motivates you (if you don’t already know) is to do some brainstorming. Choose a quiet place where you are not likely to be disturbed. Give yourself a few minutes, about ten to fifteen, to think about motivation and what difference it would make to your life if you were motivated. Get a large sheet of paper and start writing down anything that comes into your mind. You will be surprised at what you will discover. Once you know what it is that motivates you then you can plan how to stay motivated. In order to stay motivated you will need to have a plan of action, so the first step is to set about developing a plan. Eve Parnell - “Grasshopper” Saturday 20th Feb to Thursday 25th March The resilient delicacy of natural structures is the focus of these images. They convey the wonderful strangeness of those tiny worlds so close to us and so much a part of the earth’s life and yet, so alien.

Brendan Grace Fri 19th & Sat 20th February 8pm €30 It’s a funny old world when seen through the eyes of Brendan Grace. The sanctimonious priest, The father of the bride. Then there’s the schoolboy with the unspeakable personal habits and a fine line in sympathy pleas. Brendan Grace is all of these and more. There is sincerity about his act that endears you to him, and his off-stage persona is very much a ‘man of the people’ as he makes himself available after each show for a photo and a ‘meet and greet’. THEATRE

Oleannna Mon 22nd – Sat 27th February 8pm €16/€13 Still as powerful and thought provoking as it has ever been, David Mamet’s ‘Oleanna’ is a play that has caused controversy and consternation since it shocked and enraged the theatre going public in the early nineties. Waiting For IKEA Mon 22nd – Sat 27th February 8pm €17/€15 After selling out last year, ‘Waiting for IKEA’ is back for the last time ever in an extended and even better version. Set in the heart of ‘new’ Dublin, Pimlico, where night wear is day wear and bitching is everywhere. Pimlico Flats is akin to Cheers where everybody knows your name, your business, your record and what you are having for dinner. DRAMA MUSIC & COMEDY A Night to Remember Sun 28th February 8pm €25/€20 This gala fundraiser will feature songs and routines from the Mill Theatre’s most popular alumni, Mary McEvoy, Jack and Mac, Anne Bushnell, The Craic Pack and Liz Ryan (the Eclectic Mezzo) and many more. It promises to be one of the best nights of the year with the added bonus of ‘the feel good factor’. You’ll go home not only having been entertained but having supported your local theatre to nurture and support local, national and international artists. ABOUT BALLINTEER | 35

We know we should exercise but how much does it really matter? The short term benefits of regular exercise include a healthier heart, healthy muscles, bones and joints, and more energy. Regular activity over the long term reduces your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. If you only exercise to lose weight by the way, you are unlikely to stick at the regime. If you take a 30 minute walk and reward yourself with tea and biscuits upon your return you will be eating more calories than the exercise used up. So focus on exercise for overall health improvement and think of weight loss as just one of the potential benefits. 7 Reasons Your Business Should Use Facebook by Paula Flanagan, IT Trainer

We all have friends who use Facebook to keep in touch, but did you know that there are huge benefits to the business community as well? Facebook is now the number one location online and businesses are beginning to see the value of this. There are 7 very good reasons why YOUR business should be on Facebook! 1. Upwards of 350 Million Users Worldwide If it was a country, Facebook would be the 3rd largest in the world, amazing isn’t it? Yes, they recently announced that they now have in excess of 350 million users worldwide. 2. Average Facebook User Spends 55 Minutes per Day on the Site That’s a lot of time online, and shouldn’t your business be looking at ways to grab a little of that time? 3. Average Facebook User Has 130 Friends Facebook at the moment generally revolves around relationships with people you “actually” know. But Facebook may in time make the leap to tie people together more casually (like Twitter), in which case the average number of “friends” on Facebook could rise dramatically. 4. Average Facebook User “Fans” 2 Pages per Month The average Facebook user “fans” only 2 new pages per month. So, if you’re going to make growth of your Facebook fan base, a key part of your social media strategy, you must give consumers a reason why they should participate with you. You need to come up with inventive and imaginative ways to promote your fan page and engage with your audience, not just collect fans like football cards.

38 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

5. Wall Posts Don’t Impact Popularity Studies have shown that the frequency of Facebook page Wall posts has little relationship to the total number of fans. However - and this is important - there is a strong correlation between amount of other content (notes, links, photos, videos) and number of fans. So, if you want to grow your Facebook fan base, move beyond simple Wall posts and add photos, videos, links and other interesting and engaging content. 6. Customised News Feed Facebook’s news feed means that just because someone is your fan does not mean he will see your Wall posts or status updates. Instead, the default news feed is comprised of content that Facebook thinks you’ll like, based on your interactions with content from that author in the past, and interactions by your friends with that content. So test content type regularly, and pay attention to what works best for your brand. 7. Real-time Search Changes the Game Facebook is now making most content available publicly, unless you tell them not to via your privacy settings. This means that a negative status update about your brand might now show up on the first page of Google search results for your company name (at least temporarily). You need to be on top of realtime search. Today. Some brands are concentrating all their efforts and placing all their eggs in the one Facebook basket. Given the facts above, that can be justified. However, Facebook is only one of a number of strategies that could work for you, depending on the nature of your business. If you are interested in exploring the available options, give me a call, I can help you out. Paula Flanagan, Mobile: 086 896 1721.

Tarot-Scopes

BY MAGS

ARIES

LIBRA

You may have experienced traumatic changes over the recent months, but nothing occurs unless its meant to be. Going back to a time and place where you felt loved and cherished is the nostalgic healing you need. It is important you know you are still loved. You must nurture your honourable traits as these pay the most dividends, especially in love.

In an important issue, don’t listen others, rather trust in yourself and know you have given yourself the very best chance. You see, you have a gift which you need to nurture and get out there and we, the public need to learn from this. So whether this is an art form or psychic gift get to it. Relationship blocks are actually caused by a hidden shyness.

TAURUS

SCORPIO

You are now, the designer of your own destiny and as such, you kick start a chain of events that take you into the future. Love is well featured in this spread and as you read this, you are in the throes of formulating a fate, where a true and loving commitment is shared by both. The past made you who you are and is now ready to be laid to rest.

A gift of pink roses is the sign you seek to show you are on the right track of thinking. Lately, your mood may have been up and down and with good reason. Weather permitting, you need to get out and walk to re-charge tired batteries. The job you seek is yours. All things are yours, love, rings, house and harmony. Enjoy living. Expensive plastic is not you.

GEMINI

SAGITTARIUS

A chance to either change address or indeed buy into the present abode is on the cards. Blessings and abundance are what you deserve and you can put this positive request out to the universe. Taking a chance on love can only be to your advantage. Open up the page in your travel diary and begin planning the first of a least six away breaks for 2010.

Single? Unattached? For the second time maybe? Not for long. For some, a re-birth of a wonderful relationship is forecast. You must look beyond the veil and see the true beauty in a lover. Others, a welcome partnership is well starred for you. The marriage card is present for all. France and Italy feature as do Turkey and Crete for the adventurous traveller.

CANCER

CAPRICORN

Cards advise that you take time out for yourself and unwind. Decision making is not for the now, but when you really know what you want. A social meeting takes place beside an old church and is the time and place for the new you to emerge. Your are enhancing your looks and your thinking to meet the future as you wish it to be.

What you seem to have lost, you now find. You may have fallen foul of relationships in the past, but no more. The biggest task you face is trusting a love not designed to hurt, but rather to enhance your very being. You embark upon a new venture, spiritual exploration. Re-incarnation to name but one. Soul mating is a divine right and gift. Accept!

LEO

AQUARIUS

You are blessed now with the strength of angels. Your spirits are high and you are on a journey which opens up the heavens for you. Knowledge is power. Learn much and use your own inner guidance in deciphering the messages. It is okay for you to want and get the new house and the love you need, but do the work you set out to do: heal people!

You are entering your personal springtime and the world eagerly awaits your entrance. Sure! You have a lot of hard work ahead, but you are setting the stage for a worthy future. Cards advise that you take the extra courses now rather than later. In love? Be yourself, warts and all. Have faith in you! You are loved for all of you not just the good times.

VIRGO

PISCES

A belated Christmas gift pleases you beyond belief. The bearer of same has an important message for you. Sweetness and loving abundance are yours this year. You must change the you you know and evolve into the you that you are supposed to be. Only when the proper harmonies are met, can you be harmonious and yes! You unite as a love match.

A positive state of mind is a state you can choose rather than just hope for. Be now, the ultimate master of your own destiny and begin weaving the relevant banner. Angelic influences are all around you and you need to heed those vibes which are so good for your psyche. Stop allowing fear of rejection ruin what could be a most harmonious partnership!
