Welcome to the June/July issue of About Ballinteer As Etta James sang ‘At Last....’ Yes, at last the summer is here, so a change of pace and maybe a little sunshine? Hope spring eternal! One thing that is for sure, is that school holidays will happen and Summer Camps will be in demand! So, once again this year, we have a fantastic ‘summer camp special’ for you. Camps for young children, right up to teenagers - all run by locals for locals. There is everything on offer from sports activities, arts & crafts to languages. So, don’t delay - book your places! The Summer Camp Special will run across our Dundrum and Rathfarnham issues next month. So, if you missed out, just call us to be included for the July issues. Our Highlighting piece this month is on Ballinteer Community School’s transition year students, who helped mark International Music Day. If you would like to Highlight a local event, cause, group or community activitity, why not get in touch? This page is given over free of charge, thanks to the support of The Coach House Pub in Ballinteer. Last month we Highlighted Carolyn Huey’s ‘Doggy Day Out’ in Marlay Park. By all accounts it was a wonderful success, with thousands raised for the DSPCA (more pg 37). Thank you all for supporting a great cause. On a personal note, this is my last time publishing About Ballinteer. It has been more than 4 years since I put out the first issue (my it has improved!!) and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have met hundreds of wonderful local people and unearthed local gems through the clubs, activities and groups all active in the area. I also got to know hundreds of local business people, with businesses of every shape and size. I am stepping aside to develop ‘About Magazines’ as a licenced business and hopefully bring more ‘About Magazines’ issues to communities around Dublin and beyond. If you want to know more, just give me a call on 499 3022. Stuart Ferguson will now be at the helm and is your new contact for the magazine. His looking forward to hearing from you. I am sure that you will support Stuart and continue to provide him with your local news, events and advertising in the months ahead.

ABOUT SAVING

Dundrum Credit Union Encourage Youth Saving! Dundrum Credit Union has outlined the critical role played by parents in assisting children to develop a savings habit. Dundrum Credit Union recently ran a ‘Youth Saving Week’, to encourage children in the area, to either encourage to keep on saving, become credit union members and start saving.

If you would like more information email pauline@dundrumcu.ie, call 299 0410 or just pop into them on Main Street, Dundrum, Dublin 14.

Pauline from Dundrum Credit Union said “Given the harsh economic reality facing many Irish families today, there has never been a more important time to focus on providing financial education to our young people. The benefits of teaching children about money early on are both immediate and long term. In the short term, they may develop strong saving Habits, learn how to make smart purchases and learn why they can’t immediately get everything they want. In the long term, we can help them avoid getting into debt. And by teaching, the value of saving for the future, you can put them on the road to financial security”. 8 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT LIFE COACHING

Get Movitated This Summer! by Ita Breagy, Alive & Kicking It's that time of year again. The sun is shining and you are looking in your wardrobe for something to wear. All of your good intentions to loose weight and get fit before the Summer have fallen by the wayside. It's the same every year! It's frustrating, annoying and mildly depressing! So what can you do? Well, it's never too late to start. But how do you get motivated? What motivates you? What can you do differently now that you haven't done before. Motivation is the Key! Sit down with a pen and paper and write down a list of things that motivate you. Is it being able to fit into that dress you bought last year? Is it the feel good factor when your jeans fit you perfectly? Is it being able to wear a size smaller that you previously could? Is it being able to walk up the stairs without being out of breath? Is it the wonderful feeling when your muscles are well toned? Is it the lovely light feeling when your tummy is not bloated? Or is it the satisfaction of knowing that you are eating a good healthy diet, exercising regularly and treating your body like a temple?

Ita Breagy

What ever it is that motivates you, make it work to keep you going on your fitness routine or your weight loss routine. If you are having difficulty doing this alone, then perhaps Alive and Kicking can help? We are running some New Morning and Evening Classes commencing June 1st over a 10 week period and we will be dealing with all aspects of what it is that stops you from reaching your target weight or fitness levels. For example: What are your emotional triggers? What makes you crave something sweet or savoury and how can you stop the cravings. What makes you miss your exercise one morning? Each week we will deal with a different topic. If you would like more information on these classes please contact Ita: 087 277 5242 email ita@aliveandkicking.ie or check out www.aliveandkicking.ie 12 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

ABOUT GARDENING

Round the Garden in June by Tom Percy June is a wonderful month, with lots of sunshine, no risk of frost, and plenty of daylight hours to spend in the garden. Prepare Tomatoes being moved from greenhouse to outdoors should be conditioned for a few days. Take them out during the day and put them back at night to avoid the shock of a change in climate. Plants which have finished flowering can be lifted and divided in June. Now is the time to stake carnations and dahlias to encourage upright growth. Mulch around trees and shrubs to conserve moisture.

Prune Continue to thin out carrots, parsnips, beetroot and other such plants. This is also the month to thin out plums and apples, but it’s best to wait until after the trees’ natural shedding before tackling this job. Cut back on untidy growth of bushes and shrubs and remove unsightly seed heads. One thing to bear in mind is that the garden isn’t just about work. It is also a part of the home, a place to use and enjoy. So make sure that you allocate time to do simply nothing, apart from rest in the shade and admire your handiwork.

Plant Purchased and greenhouse raised plants can be planted out this month, but do make sure to water in really well. Sowing should be done in sets to give a succession of fresh salad and vegetables over the coming months. In very dry weather, it is a good idea to thoroughly soak the seed drill prior to sowing.

Marlay Park ‘Doggy Day Out’ - A Barking Success! Congratulations to Caroline Huey, the DSPCA, Volunteers, locals residents and dog lovers who all supported the fantastic Doggy Day out in Marlay Park last month. It was a resounding success! There were literally thousands who turned up and hundreds of dogs who helped their ‘rescued’ canine friends by being there on the day. The sun shone, face were painted (children’s), we had dog grooming, a fortune wheel for humans and dogs and the DSPCA were delighted that they were able to mirco chip hundreds of dogs on the day!

Eight year old Sam McMahon will benefit from the Kings and Queens of Greystones! The sprint distance triathlon takes place on 7th August 2010. Sign up today to take part at www.kingofgreystones.com 34 | ABOUT BALLINTEER

Bytes & Pieces Managing your email As email becomes more and more popular as a method of communicating, sorting the ‘wheat from the chaff’ becomes increasingly difficult. If you are expecting an important mail from a friend or are looking for an older email, it’s often a bit of search amongst all the marketing messages and order confirmations that are also sent to you. The trick is to set yourself up with two email accounts. Choose an easy to remember one for your friends and family to send messages on, and a more unusual address (making you less likely to get spam) for when you sign up to websites, or buy online. For example, you could have one account with your ISP (e.g. yourname@o2.ie) and another with an independent operator such as hotmail or googlemail e.g. yourname@googlemail.com. You can use their own programs to access the mail, or use something like Windows Mail, Windows Live, or Thunderbird (free from Mozilla) to see both accounts in one window but in separate folders.

ABOUT LOCAL EVENTS

Highlighting - International Music Day by Mary Kelly, Ballinteer Community School

International Music Day was initiated back in 1975 by Lord Yehudi Menuhin to encourage: •

the promotion of our musical art among all sections of society

the application of the UNESCO ideals of peace and friendship between peoples, of the evolution of their cultures, of the exchange of experience and of the mutual appreciation of their aesthetic values

the promotion of the activities of Internal Music Council, its international member organizations and national committees, as well as its programme policy in general.

“The transition year students demonstrated the skills they acquired from a series of workshops during the year, in the areas of music literacy, rhythm and pitch skills and their music memory skills using the reknowned 'Kodaly' concept of music education. The group also composed two pieces of music for percussion instruments which are available on CD. “ She went on to say “The school choir demonstrated a typical rehearsal starting with musical 'games' followed by vocal warm ups, breathing exercises and a rehearsal of two choir pieces. As it was an 'Open Rehearsal', the invited guests participated in all the activities. After all their hard work, everyone enjoyed refreshments provided by the school's very active parents' association. “ Congratulations to all involved!

At the time, Lord Menuhin said that he hoped ‘International Music Day’ would become an annual event for the propagation of greater knowledge of our art, arid for the strengthening of the bonds of peace and friendship between peoples through music.’ Thirty five years on and the event is still going strong. Mary Kelly, Music Teacher at Ballinteer Community School, told us how her pupils contributed to the day. According to Mary “Ballinteer Community School played their part, by presenting an open rehearsal with the transition year music workshop group and the school choir.“ 44 | ABOUT BALLINTEER
