ABOUT LIFE COACHING
Mums – Are You Looking to Return to Work? Are you a Mum who is thinking of returning to work? Have you taken a brief Maternity leave or have you been a ‘stay at home’ Mum for several years? For some Mums the mere thought of re-entering the work place can be a daunting experience, no matter how short the period of absence. The thought of having to prepare for interviews can bring back dreaded memories similar to that of sitting the Leaving Certificate - the stuff of nightmares! In order to prepare for the inevitable here are some questions you might want to ask yourself - in no particular order: Are you planning on returning to the same employer? Do you want to work in the same profession? Do you need to upgrade your skills? Are you worried about the gap in your CV? Have you been putting off deciding when to return to work for ages? Are you lacking in confidence or has your selfesteem hit rock bottom? Are you dreading the day you willË have to go for an interview? Do you feel you need to prepare for this but you don’t know where to start?
by Ita Breagy, Alive & Kicking If you are finding this difficult and feel you would like some assistance then perhaps taking part in one of our workshops might justr be the thing for you. If you would prefer to work singularly then we can set up some 1-2-1 appointments. At Alive and Kicking Life and Business Coaching we run regular One Day Trainings on topics such as: "Personal Developement", "How to Overcome Fear of Flying", and "Learn how to Reduce Stress". Based in Main Street, Dundrum, we limit the numbers to a maximum of twelve people. On Saturday 5th September the Training is specifically geared to preparing Mums for their Return to Work. For further information, please contact Ita on 087 277 5242 Email: ita@aliveandkicking.ie or see www.aliveandkicking.ie
Life and Business Coaching
Building your confidence is crucial before even considering applying for a job. You want to be able to put you best foot forward and let your future employer see that you are more than capable of juggling bringing up a family with holding down a career regardless of whether you are working full or part-time. Remember you only get one chance to make a first impression.
Are you stuck in a rut?
Preparation is the key. You know the old adage ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’. Here are some tips on how to get started. Firstly take some time out to decide what exactly it is you want to do. Once you have decided that you can work on the rest. Set out a plan of action. Make a list of all the things that will be necessary to put in place in order for you to go back to work.

ABOUT FINANCES
Tax Return Time It’s that time of year again where 2008 Income Tax returns have to be filed with the Revenue Commissioners by 31st October 2009. Any income tax due for 2008 has to be paid over by that date as well. Since we are now under the self-assessment system it is each taxpayer’s responsibility to insure that this deadline is met. For self-employed people accounts have to be prepared and results submitted as part of the Return of Income declaration. As a lot of emphasis is placed on the declaration of income and payment to the Revenue Commissioners of outstanding tax most selfemployed people are aware of the responsibilities and obligations to be met by this deadline. But there are a large number of people who are not aware there is unclaimed money which belongs to them. Tax credits are not being claimed and people are losing out by simply not filling in and submitting a form. Outlined below are just samples of the tax credits which are not being used.
by Aidan Barrett Rent-a-room relief and Childcare services schemes. It is necessary for the taxpayer to claim these allowances and reliefs. It is not done automatically. Filling in a Return of Income form is one way of doing this. Contacting the Revenue is another possibility. They have a very good online site at www.revenue.ie which has extensive information on all tax allowances and reliefs with contact details to get in touch with them. If form filling or talking to the Revenue seems too daunting then employing an accountant is another option. They are experts in this field and even a simple chat with an accountant may save you money. Do not assume that you are receiving everything you are entitled to. This is money that could be due to you but only you can ensure that it is gets into your pocket and not remain unclaimed in the hands of the taxman.
Home Carer Allowance Stay at home married parents are entitled to an allowance of €900 in 2008 Medical Expenses Tax relief can be claimed on certain medical expenses incurred in 2008 Rent Tax Relief An individual, paying for private rented accommodation can claim tax relief on the rent paid at the standard rate of income tax subject to certain conditions. Service Charges Service charges paid in 2007 qualify for tax relief in 2008. Trade Union subscriptions Trade union subscriptions to a maximum of €300 qualify for income tax relief.Taxpayers may qualify for personal tax credits which they are not aware of. There are also certain schemes in place such as 8 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS
Effective Debt Collection - A Must in Today’s Environment by Pauline Horkan, Dillon Solicitors
The following are a list of 10 tips to follow to help you collect your debts: 1. Check your terms and conditions of business. 2. Make sure you confirm an order for a supply of goods / services in writing. You should send a sales order form which should incorporate your terms of business (usually on the back of the form). When a solicitor is instructed on debt collection matters they will seek evidence of the “contract” i.e. order form, invoices etc. 3. Make sure you know who you are doing business with i.e. is it a Company or an individual. Get details of the correct address. 4. If you are dealing with a Company try and get a personal guarantee, in writing, from a Director. This may not always be possible. 5. Review your credit control system. Are you sending regular reminders? 6. Make it clear that you cannot continue to do business with a creditor until some / all of the existing debts are paid. It is worth noting that since the introduction of the Late Payments in Commercial Transaction Regulations in 2002, penalty interest applies if payments for commercial transactions are not met within 30 days, unless the agreement between the parties specifies otherwise. 7. Check out the creditworthiness of a new customer. A simple, inexpensive way to vet Companies is by checking their status on the Companies Registration Office website regularly and not only when the Company first purchases goods. If you require more up-to-date information you can carry out a full Company search. We can assist you in this. 8. As soon as it becomes clear that the debt is unlikely to be paid i.e. calls not being returned, then instruct a solicitor to issue a 10 day demand letter. 9. Don’t instruct your solicitor to write a demand letter unless you are prepared to proceed with Court proceedings immediately. If you do issue proceedings it will show you are taking the matter seriously and are not going away. 12 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM
10. Once judgement is obtained it may be enforced in a variety of ways. In some instances it may be enforced by a sheriff who may seize goods of the debtor. Alternatively, a judgement against a property owned by the debtor can be registered which means that if the debtor wishes to sell the property you must be repaid before they can do so. We have set up a customised Debt Collection Department in our office which uses a unique “case steps” process to ensure that all cases are managed proactively and efficiently. If you have any debt collection matters that we might be able to help you with do not hesitate to contact Pauline Horkan or Barbara Sherry on 01-2960666 or paulinehorkan@dillon.ie / barbarasherry@dillon.ie

ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS
Finding Time for Romance Finding time for romance often proves to be difficult if not impossible for most people these days. Hectic work schedules, household chores, taking care of your children’s endless demands usually leave you exhausted at the end of a long week. When you are juggling a busy lifestyle and a relationship, finding time to keep the candles (never mind the fires) of romance burning can be a huge struggle. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’re trying to regain some time for the love that you have, following these simple steps below should make your struggle to regain romance a whole lot easier. If your relationship is a priority to you, then you should be giving it all the attention it needs. = Create your own simple rituals that show you care for each other, such as leaving notes, a phone call or emailing each day. = Listen without giving advice, taking responsibility, or trying to "fix" things. Let your mate enjoy the luxury of knowing that you are really listening, only giving feedback when asked. = Talk to each other about what's going on in your lives besides the day-to-day running of the household or office talk. = Turn off the TV for 15 minutes every night to talk and check in with each other. = Instead of the standard, "How was your day?" exchange, pick at least one good thing about your day and share it with each other. = Date at unusual times - make breakfast dates and brunch dates or meet each other for drinks after work. You can keep the dates short. = Hire help - Hire a babysitter or someone to cut the lawn and use the time to do things together. 14 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM
by David Kavanagh, Avalon = Give each other a kiss when coming and going. Give plenty of hugs and try to laugh together. = Plan a regular "date" night once a week and stick to it = Make a “love list”-write out ten things you would like your partner to do for you each month, neck massages, foot rubs etc, (small things that don’t take a huge amount of time) and commit to doing at least two a week. It is very easy to drift apart from each other. You need to validate each other’s experiences and make time for your partner, however difficult this is. Make lists of what you have to do during the week, see what can be deferred or delegated and use this time as quality time with each other.

ABOUT CHILDREN - DIFFICULT EATERS
Eat Your Greens! by www.mychild.ie
Healthy eating for children is one of the most important parenting topics, but what do you do if your child is a fussy or difficult eater? Mum, Hollie Smith shares her top tips from her book, ‘Dealing with Difficult Eaters: Stop mealtimes becoming a battleground with fussy children’, co-written with Dr. Sandi Mann and Sally Child.
1. Be Cool Easier said than done, admittedly, but it’s true that attitude is everything when it comes to feeding children. Never let them see that their food issues are upsetting you – in some cases it will simply make things worse.
2. Be Resilent Whether you’re trying to expand the limited food horizons of a fussy eater, or overhaul the habits of a child with a weight problem, you’ll need to be consistent, firm and resolute.
3. Be A Foodie Get them in the kitchen, cooking their own food, and in the garden, growing it. Take them shopping, let them choose, allow them to prepare meals and snacks. Experiment, try something different every so often.
4. Be A Good Eater Yourself Sit at the table with them, eat your greens, keep your treat intake limited. You are the foremost influence on your children, in eating and everything else.
7. Be Well Informed Do your homework so you know what the basics of nutrition are – that way, you’ll know off the top of your head what healthy alternatives you can offer a child who is asking for junk food. There are many different foods out there… it’s just a matter of discovering them all.
8. Be United Get everyone else involved on your side. There’s not much point in dealing with a difficult eater one way, if someone else is dealing with it a different way.
9. Be Reasonable Maybe your little difficult eater just doesn’t like certain foods, or maybe they have a perfectly understandable preference for white bread. Why not? A child should never be made to eat anything.
10. Be Moderate Don’t fret or obsess about food – apart from driving yourself insane, you may have the opposite effect to the one you were hoping for. What our kids eat is, and should be, something to care about and be concerned about. It’s all about balance. You can get your hands on a copy of Hollie's book at www.amazon.com.
Sponsored by:
5. Be Careful Don’t offer food as a bribe or reward, however desperate you get, and keep praise low-key. Be sure not to ‘label’ them – you may well have a difficult eater on your hands, but don’t call them one to their face.
6. Be Sensitive Watch out for the difficult eater with an underlying emotional need, and always treat the issue with care and understanding. 18 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ABOUT GARDENING
Round the Garden in September September brings a definite shift in the feel of the garden. The colour palette changes to a ‘dryer' one with golden yellows, deep oranges, and glowing reds. A few plants suddenly shout for attention coming to the fore for the first time, but more start to prepare themselves for the colder times ahead. Ornamental grasses lead the way, with many ‘flowering' over the coming weeks.Of the perennials, of particular interest are Heuchera, Agapanthus, and Helenium (sunflower). All offer flower in the early September garden, with the sunflower providing the additional benefits of excellent height and structure and wonderful seed-heads. Elsewhere, interest is provided by fruiting plants. A September star plant is Callicarpa bodinieri ‘Profusion'. It's an unusual shrub grown for the

rich magenta colour of its plentiful berries which, whilst it does little of interest for a good part of the year, screams and shouts just when the garden needs a burst of something new. Finally, the garden centres will start to stock spring bulbs at this time of year, and it really pays to buy these now while they are fresh.Too many people seem to put off buying their bulbs until later in the season, but think about buying them now and take advantage of the better (and fresher) selections available.

ABOUT LOCAL COURSES & CLASSES
Local Courses & Classes Churchtown School of Music The Churchtown School of Music was established in 2005, in dedicated premises at Churchtown Park House. Last year we sent three students off to third level music colleges to start their graduate studies and this year we have another three going the same route. This year we are encouraging all those adults who have time on their hands to join us in the mornings to finish what they started all those years ago. Or simply just start from the beginning! We are also running Music Appreciation and Learn to Read Music classes. We also have Pre-Instrumental classes for ages 4,5 and 6. This is a 2 year course following on from Monkey Music. These classes bridge that gap between Monkey Music and choosing an instrument. After that we offer Intro to Guitar or Intro to Singing. These are group classes giving the children a taste of the discipline of learning an instrument in a comfortable setting.

Monkey Music Monkey Music was introduced to Ireland in 2007. Recently we were invited to collaborate with the RDS in providing Music Education for Junior and Senior Infants in two inner city schools. This has been a great success and is continuing in the Autumn. We are also delighted to announce that we will be running classes in The National Concert Hall starting Sat Sept. 5th. Our weekly classes will also continue in Churchtown School of Music on Monday and Saturday mornings. If your child is in pre-school and you can’t come to the classes don’t forget we can come to you. Just ask your Crèche/Montessori to contact us to organise a free demo session. 28 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

September Computer Tip In the world of the internet, new language arrives all the time and in a matter of weeks you don't have a clue what people are talking about. Terms such as RSS, blogs, twitter, podcasting and phishing may not be everyday conversation ‘down the pub' but you'll hear it in the news, and see it on websites. Whilst a general internet search will show up text trying its best to describe these technologies, www.commoncraft.com does an excellent job of explaining all this with short cartoon-like videos. The site does also include a couple of videos on less obvious subjects like the benefits of using energy saving lightbulbs and electing a US president. There are only a small selection of videos at the moment (they are a husband and wife small company), but the site is well worth bookmarking as more are sure to be published over time.

ABOUT EYE CARE
Looking After The Windows to Your Soul! by Sara Sweetmann It's said that the eyes are the windows to your soul, yet they are also a window to your health. A visit to your local optician is about preventing future problems as well as checking your eyesight. An eye test is more than just reading the letters on the board. As well as checking your ability to see correctly, your optician can also gauge the general health of your eyes and can spot early clues to other problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure. First signs of eye problems such as glaucoma and cataracts can be noted and dealt with. You only have one pair of eyes during your life so they need to be looked after carefully. Regular eye checks are essential and it's recommended that you have an eye test every two years unless your optician recommends a different time-frame. It's also suggested that all children and people over the age of 70 have an annual eye test. Contact lenses wearers should attend regular after-care check-ups to ensure your lenses remain comfortable and are not damaging your eyes in any way.
• If you work on a PC, take short, frequent breaks to prevent eyestrain and tiredness. An ‘eye-break' will help which is when you focus on objects further away than the computer screen. • If you play a lot of sport, consider buying sports goggles to protect your eyes. • Eye injuries caused by home DIY are common so always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from flying splinters or shards of metal. ABOUT STYLE
Personal Style De-Mystified I was reflecting over the summer on what the recurring questions and issues were that I help clients with during the wardrobe de-cluttering and personal shopping times we have. Often it’s the personal style issue that concerns us most with the following questions coming up regularly: =Do I have a personal style and what is it? =How do I identify it? =How can I be age appropriate now that I’ve had that significant birthday? =I used to know what suited me but feel that I’ve lost my way somehow. It is easy to become confused between fashion and style, however personal style is not about following fashion – it’s about understanding what works for you, your body shape, your lifestyle, and how to express yourself effortlessly and comfortably by wearing your clothes confidently.
by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant Helena, in the Giddy Studios (above the shops) on Grange Road at Marley Park. We will consider the above questions and look at the importance of: body shape, clothing personality, colour, capsule wardrobe and using accessories to change outfits. The evening will begin at 7.30pm with a glass of wine and finish around 9.30 pm with tea/ coffee. The cost is €20 per person. If you are interested in attending please let me know by text (0868067702) or e-mail (janicecoyne@gmail.com) as places are limited. This should be a fun night ladies – let’s de-mystify the style issue once and for all!
We are surrounded by images of stick-thin models wearing clothes that wouldn’t suit the lifestyle of most of the women who look at them. Finding out how to sift through the new season’s fashion to find the pieces that suit and fit you can be a daunting task for even the most dedicated shopper and I know that for many of us that is just too much like hard work: we don’t know where to begin or what to look for. When you understand what your personal style is the hunt for the correct items becomes easier. Understanding what trends in the current fashion won’t suit you and interpreting the parts that will leaves you free to be selective and confident. On Tuesday the 29th of September I shall be hosting a personal style night, courtesy of 42 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

Stubbornness is your byword these days. This is not the way to go now. Cards advise that you exercise forgiveness, especially when it come to the love of your life. Petty trivia can irritate so much, but you are the bigger person. Cards advise that you ignore trivia and focus on opportunity coming your way.
TAURUS Oh yes you do have choices to make regarding love. All you need to know at this time is that soul mates know each other so well that your inner self can be trusted implicitly. You need to be more assertive and take back the control and power over your own life. Cards denote much harmony and happiness for you Taurus.
GEMINI An older man enters your life for a reason. Try not to be so stubborn and go with the flow. There is much learning to be done so you can glean all the good things that the universe wishes to bestow upon you. Taking care of the needs of an outsider is an act of unselfish charity.
CANCER As you notice sequences of numbers, you also notice significant correlations to the patterns of your day. Your luck has changed dramatically over the last few weeks. Karma is playing a huge role in everything that you do, act upon or even neglect. What goes around, comes around, so its up to you to make it a good one.
LEO A time to reap the rewards of all the effort you put into recent months of life and indeed, business. A flush of pentacles indicates a good financial spell is wending its way to you now. Cards advise that you try not to dwell on the past, rather to embrace a new and wonderfully exciting future.
VIRGO Talking to the financial adviser is far more beneficial to your cause than hoping all will go well without intervention. No one can deny that you have had your back against the wall regarding cash. This in turn may have an adverse affect on the love area.. Take heart, this is only the beginning of the rest of your life.
SCORPIO Your creative side is not to be discarded lightly. There is a book in you and you have a lot to say. We the people want to hear it. You must face your challenges head on and not bury your head in the sand. You too can be the willing victim or the victor of karma. Its entirely up to you what comes back to you.
SAGITTARIUS Have a little patience as your time of harvest is near. We are all entitled to a love life and a reasonable standard of living, but your rewards are special this year. You celebrate life with an abundance of thanksgiving and hope for the future. A wonderful sense of cosiness and warmth envelopes your very being.
CAPRICORN Going back to the beginning is the key to going forward, so whether it’s a case of re-tracing your steps all the way back to your childhood or maybe even considering a few sessions of past life regression. This at the very least will go a long way towards showing you who you always were and are today.
AQUARIUS News involving twins has a special and rewarding meaning for you at this time. You are in your personal autumn and as such are in your element at this time. Quality time never came out of anyone’s wallet. A walk in the crisp air among abundant greenery, or by the sea to refresh your senses.
PISCES The significance of a dog entering the family circle is so ominously lucky for you. A cash break is well overdue to you. Good luck with this. Time spent with children is so heart warming. They will never forget precious quality time you thoughtfully create. Love is a winner for you at this time.

ABOUT SPIRITUALITY
Can Spirituality Change Anything? by Margaret Noctor (Mags)
The times we find ourselves living in are as confusing and uncertain as has ever been in recent history. Most of us cannot even depend on the security of employment, or for many even look to the prospect of securing a chosen property to live in. Where to look for solace, protection and guidance? The answer lies in looking inside ourselves and connecting to the higher power of the heavens. True! The power of prayer is immeasurable in assisting us in all aspects of our daily lives. To know that we are at one with the heavens and are not alone can give us the most wonderful sense of hope and a power over our own destiny. Yes, spirituality can change everything. When you allow yourself become fully aware of the unconditional love that heaven has for you, you also become extremely aware of the needs of others, thereby opening up to the more charitable side of your individual nature. A sense of being at one with the universe of pure light and love, empowers the will, which lead to the actions which ultimately
bring peace and harmony, wealth and success to your daily life. Being spiritual is not necessarily all about speaking the words of prayer, rather enacting in a spiritual way the true concept of spirituality. Much can be universally changed when we put heavenly light into dark places and situations. Putting light into an enemy kills the darkness which may have been intended to hurt you. Angelic love and assistance is just a thought away, irrespective of race or creed, so give it a try and see the results of your prayer. Be very specific in what you ask for and be unselfish with your requests, remembering to include others, known and unknown.
