Staying Warm this Winter by Brian McGarry, Plumber As the weather gets colder and heating bills rise, there are many low cost options which will help you to reduce your bills. You know that closing doors and windows, adding insulation, installing double glazing and turning off radiators in rooms which are not in use all help. Here are a few you may not have considered:

Turn Your Heating Down Just 1ºC can knock 10% off your heating bill! Keep your thermostat at 20ºC. Programme Your Heat Get a programmable thermostat or programmable radiator controls to vary temperatures throughout the day, keeping the heat down when not needed. Follow the 30-Minute Rule Set the heating to switch off 30 minutes before bedtime, and set it to turn on 30 minutes before you get up in the morning. Take a Shower Consider a shower instead of a bath - a shower usually uses about a fifth of the energy of a full bath. You might also consider installing a low-flow shower head to reduce the amount of hot water being used. Get Your Boiler Serviced Have your boiler inspected and serviced by a professional every year and you will save a minimum of €150 a year! An annual boiler service will reduce the likelihood of breakdown, save money; reduce CO2 emissions and improve your boiler's reliability and safety. Remember, by law, only an RGII member can service a gas boiler. If you have a boiler older than 15 years then it is likely that during the next few years that you will have to replace it on reliability grounds. Change it now and start saving immediately! If you have a natural gas supply then it is likely to be the lowest cost option in terms of both boiler installation cost and running cost. Winter Warmers Cawl A thick soup from Wales, pronounced “Cowl” 1 Large onion 2 Large carrots 3 Leeks (white and tender green) 2 Sticks celery 190ml / 1/3 pint milk 2 Large potatoes 50g / 2oz Butter Parsley, chopped Salt and pepper Grated cheese (optional) 1.2 litres / 2pt Chicken or vegetable stock Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Add the chopped onion, cubed potato, peeled and sliced carrot, chopped celery, and sliced leeks. Sweat together on slow heat for 15 minutes, then add the stock. Bring to the boil, lower the heat and simmer for 45 minutes. Take out about 275ml of the mixture, add the chopped parsley and liquidise together with the milk, then return to the pan. Season with pepper and salt and serve with a little grated cheese on top if required.
Pear Parcels Per person: Multiply the ingredients as required 25g Butter at room temperature 1 Comice or dessert pear 1 Orange, halved 2 Tbsp Soft brown sugar Generous pinch of cinnamon Cream the butter, sugar and cinnamon and set aside. Cut the pear in half, remove the core and top and tail but don’t peel the pear. Place each pear half, cored side up on a large square of double thickness baking foil. Form half of the butter & sugar mixture into a ball and press into the pear cavity. Gather the foil up around the pear half and squeeze the juice from one half of the orange over pear. Close the foil around pear and repeat with other half. Place the wrapped pears on a baking sheet and bake at 180°C / 350°F / gas mark 4 for about 1 hour until very soft. Remove pear from foil and place on a plate, drizzle with caramel or chocolate sauce. 10 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

Highlighting - Three Rock Prayer Summit by Fiona Murdoch
Christians from local churches joined together to pray for the UN Climate Summit, which took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 7th-18th December. The ecumenical prayer service, which was held in Holy Cross, Dundrum, was organised by the Three Rock Churches’ Environment Group, a group of six churches working together to promote environmental awareness in the local community. As well as Holy Cross, the other churches involved are the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, Balally, Dundrum Methodist Church and Whitechurch and Kilternan Church of Ireland parishes. In his homily, Monsignor Dermot Lane, president of the Mater Dei Institute and PP of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, said that everybody needed to make changes to their lifestyles in order to help prevent runaway climate change. “We may run the risk, if we continue with our current lifestyles, of handing down a damaged planet to the next generation,” he said. “It may, in fact, be stealing from the next generation, unless we change our lifestyles.” He said that if proof of “the ongoing climate crisis” was required, one only needed to look at the floods that had “devastated” parts of the country recently. He also made reference to the recent pastoral letter produced by the Catholic bishops, The Cry of the Earth, which encourages everyone to undergo an “ecological conversion”. “The spirit of God is the source of all life; the spirit of God breathes life into the dust of the earth. We are rooted and grounded in the universe … we are from the earth and belong to the earth,” he said, adding, “It is through the power of the Creator that we can renew 12 | ABOUT DUNDRUM
the face of the earth – in our community, in our churches and in our religions.” The Three Rock Churches’ Environment Group has also organised competitions for school pupils and shown Al Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth. The group is currently lobbying Dublin Bus to provide feeder buses to the Luas and hopes that the council will provide a piece of waste ground that can be developed into a garden. The Group is an initiative of Eco Congregation Ireland, an inter-denominational project that encourages churches and communities to pursue eco-friendly lifestyles. People from throughout Ireland attended an ecumenical service for the UN climate summit held in Christ Church Cathedral in December, which was organised by Eco Congregation Ireland, Trocaire and Christian Aid. The speaker was Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. A number of years ago a family law resolution model known as collaborative law was developed here. This involves both solicitors working together with the two spouses and all four parties meeting on several occasions with a view to the resolving in a mature and constructive fashion all of the issues which require to be agreed in relation to property, other assets, maintenance, custody and access, pensions, taxation and succession act issues. In the last six months a number of solicitors in Dublin have trained as family lawyer mediators. Mediation is a process where the husband and the wife attend a number of sessions of mediation with a view to resolving their issues and coming up with a set of proposals which is then converted into a binding agreement by their solicitors. The role of the mediator is to facilitate the discussions between the husband and the wife. The mediator can provide information but not legal advice. The mediator’s role is to maintain a focus on the resolution of the issues and look for ways and mechanisms as to unlock the difficulties. The training which was conducted through a U.K. model known as Resolution which has been operating successfully in the U.K. for the last fifteen years is based on a child centered approach to the resolution of family law issues. The experience in the United Kingdom has demonstrated quite clearly that the impact of family law breakup on children is greatly alleviated if the parties can reach a resolution of the issues between them in a constructive and mature manner, without having to engage in lengthy and confrontational legal proceedings. 14 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

Round The Garden in January by Tom Percy Prepare If you have some mildish weather this month, take the opportunity to dig over your ground. This will expose any garden pests and provide a snack for birds.
Prune Prune apples and pears as soon as you have a milder day and remove old fruit, either hanging or on the ground, as these encourage pests.
It’s a good idea to check all tree stakes and make sure greenhouse glass is secure against high winds. When you harvest cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, swedes or turnips, turn the ground over, burying the stems in the bottom of a trench to prepare a perfect spot for runner beans.
Now is the time to prepare grafts by cutting trees back. After cutting, scions for should be labeled and heeled into the ground ready for use. Use lime wash or a caustic soda spray to treat the stumps of old fruit trees, making sure you remove all dead bark. Do not be tempted to prune soft fruits, such as apricots, cherries, figs, nectarines or peaches.
Plant Seed potatoes benefit from being "sprouted" before planting. Place the seed potatoes in a warm and light area to let the eyes sprout. The potatoes will then grow quickly after planting. Hotbeds can be used to force asparagus, broad beans, carrots, onions and radishes. Early cucumbers can be seeded under glass or in a hotbed. Avoid planting trees this month unless absolutely necessary and then only do so from pots. If you have to do so, protect base with a covering of well rotted manure.

In September last year I hosted a Style Night in Giddy Studios in Rathfarnham and many of you came and had a fun time looking at the issues that arise when we try to figure out the difference between style and fashion.
Finding out what our best features are and enhancing them with both the style or length of our clothes as well as the clever use of the correct accessories can open up your existing wardrobe in new and interesting ways. This need not cost the earth either, as eye catching necklaces and belts are particularly popular at the moment. We shall have a closer look at how to use accessories in the best way for your body shape and discover the simple answers to the question of updating a look without breaking the bank. As before the night will begin with a glass of wine at 7.30pm, concluding with tea/coffee at 9.30pm and cost €20. Please text or e-mail me to book a place as numbers will be limited. I discovered on that night that a question almost everyone wanted an answer to was on body shape and how to dress to enhance or disguise what nature had endowed us with. I have therefore set another date for Tuesday the 2nd of February. I hope to take more time to discuss different body shapes and allow time for questions relating to this. The key words to keep in mind when we are making decisions for ourselves on what to wear and how to wear it are “balance” and “proportion”. How to bring balance to your own shape and silhouette will depend on your height and the proportions of your body. Two people of similar height and body shape can still be differently proportioned and therefore would need to be mindful of this when choosing clothes. This can explain how, if you are shopping with a friend of similar size and colouring to yourself, an outfit can look great on one of you and not the other. 22 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

Local Ladies Get Stylish! Last month, over 50 ladies gathered in Giddy Studios on the Grange Road, for a Personal Style Night’ with local Style Consultant Janice Coyne. All present came away with some practical advice on how to identify their own personal style; getting to know what clothes suit their body/lifestyle plus the importance of body shape, clothing personality, colour and using accessories.
