It also houses historic maps of the county area dating back three centuries and a range of old photographs of people and places of Dundrum Post Office

Dundrum Library has a small but growing collection of local history books, articles, periodicals and reference material. The focus of the material is Dundrum and the surrounding area. We have files and articles on historical buildings like Airfield, Marlay Park and Taney Parish, as well as events, festivals and local historical figures such as the Yeats Sisters and Padraig Pearse. The library keeps back issues of various history and local periodicals such as the Genealogical Society of Ireland Journal, History Ireland magazine and Three Rock Panorama. A number of databases such as ‘Ask about Ireland’ are also available on line from the Library website www. dlrcoco.ie/library. Borrowers have online access to websites such as Ordnance Survey Ireland’s Digital Historical Map Viewer, Griffith’s Valuation 1847 – 1864 and the Irish Times Newspaper Archive on the library’s six internet access points, which are free to use. The collection is available for reference by borrowers of DLRCC Library Service and the general public. All are welcome to browse through the material and we provide a photocopy service in the branch. There are also local history collections in each of the other Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Public Libraries, the largest of which is located in Dun Laoghaire Library. As well the electronic resources mentioned above it also houses the 1901 and 1911 census for the county on microfilm, the Thom’s Directories in hard copy dating back to 1905 and on microfilm dating back to 1838, every electoral register as far back as 1948 and county council minutes going back to 1885. ABOUT FINANCES

Tax Return Deadline Looms! Tax Return fever will shortly begin, with the deadline of 31st October next looming even closer. If you file online you have until the 16th November to make your return. Under the self assessment system an individual with income apart from PAYE type income, should file a tax return every year. Many individuals do not realise that if they have PAYE income and rental income then they are obliged under the self assessment system to file a tax return even if they have no net rental income after taking all the outgoings into account. If they do not file they leave themselves open to penalties. Many people, including those with only PAYE income, have found that when they engaged Leonard & Company to file their tax returns a refund ensued after a claim was made for some of the following allowances:

by John Bollard, Leonard & Company

on mortgage interest. If you did not take out a new loan for a new house (not your first house) or top up a qualifying loan on your existing home since the 1 January 2003 you are not longer entitled to mortgage interest relief. It makes financial sense to bring your tax affairs up to date and it really is not that painful or expensive if you engage an experienced professional firm such as Leonard & Company. Leonard & Company file all their client’s tax returns online, which ensures that any refunds due, are processed as speedily as possible.

Initial Consultation Free The relief for mortgage interest was changed in the recent Budget. Since 1st May 2009 mortgage interest relief is now confined to the first seven years of the mortgage. ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS

Effective Debt Collection - A Must in Today’s Environment by Pauline Horkan, Dillon Solicitors

The following are a list of 10 tips to follow to help you collect your debts: 1. Check your terms and conditions of business. 2. Make sure you confirm an order for a supply of goods / services in writing. You should send a sales order form which should incorporate your terms of business (usually on the back of the form). When a solicitor is instructed on debt collection matters they will seek evidence of the “contract” i.e. order form, invoices etc. 3. Make sure you know who you are doing business with i.e. is it a Company or an individual. Get details of the correct address. 4. If you are dealing with a Company try and get a personal guarantee, in writing, from a Director. This may not always be possible. 5. Review your credit control system. Are you sending regular reminders? 6. Make it clear that you cannot continue to do business with a creditor until some / all of the existing debts are paid. It is worth noting that since the introduction of the Late Payments in Commercial Transaction Regulations in 2002, penalty interest applies if payments for commercial transactions are not met within 30 days, unless the agreement between the parties specifies otherwise. 7. Check out the creditworthiness of a new customer. A simple, inexpensive way to vet Companies is by checking their status on the Companies Registration Office website regularly and not only when the Company first purchases goods. If you require more up-to-date information you can carry out a full Company search. We can assist you in this. 8. As soon as it becomes clear that the debt is unlikely to be paid i.e. calls not being returned, then instruct a solicitor to issue a 10 day demand letter. 9. Don’t instruct your solicitor to write a demand letter unless you are prepared to proceed with Court proceedings immediately. If you do issue proceedings it will show you are taking the matter seriously and are not going away. 12 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

10. Once judgement is obtained it may be enforced in a variety of ways. In some instances it may be enforced by a sheriff who may seize goods of the debtor. Alternatively, a judgement against a property owned by the debtor can be registered which means that if the debtor wishes to sell the property you must be repaid before they can do so. We have set up a customised Debt Collection Department in our office which uses a unique “case steps” process to ensure that all cases are managed proactively and efficiently. If you have any debt collection matters that we might be able to help you with do not hesitate to contact Pauline Horkan or Barbara Sherry on 01-2960666 or paulinehorkan@dillon.ie / barbarasherry@dillon.ie

ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS

Finding Time for Romance Finding time for romance often proves to be difficult if not impossible for most people these days. Hectic work schedules, household chores, taking care of your children’s endless demands usually leave you exhausted at the end of a long week. When you are juggling a busy lifestyle and a relationship, finding time to keep the candles (never mind the fires) of romance burning can be a huge struggle. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’re trying to regain some time for the love that you have, following these simple steps below should make your struggle to regain romance a whole lot easier. If your relationship is a priority to you, then you should be giving it all the attention it needs. = Create your own simple rituals that show you care for each other, such as leaving notes, a phone call or emailing each day. = Listen without giving advice, taking responsibility, or trying to "fix" things. Let your mate enjoy the luxury of knowing that you are really listening, only giving feedback when asked. = Talk to each other about what's going on in your lives besides the day-to-day running of the household or office talk. = Turn off the TV for 15 minutes every night to talk and check in with each other. = Instead of the standard, "How was your day?" exchange, pick at least one good thing about your day and share it with each other. = Date at unusual times - make breakfast dates and brunch dates or meet each other for drinks after work. You can keep the dates short. = Hire help - Hire a babysitter or someone to cut the lawn and use the time to do things together.

14 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

by David Kavanagh, Avalon = Give each other a kiss when coming and going. Give plenty of hugs and try to laugh together. = Plan a regular "date" night once a week and stick to it = Make a “love list”-write out ten things you would like your partner to do for you each month, neck massages, foot rubs etc, (small things that don’t take a huge amount of time) and commit to doing at least two a week. It is very easy to drift apart from each other. You need to validate each other’s experiences and make time for your partner, however difficult this is. Make lists of what you have to do during the week, see what can be deferred or delegated and use this time as quality time with each other.

ABOUT CHILDREN - DIFFICULT EATERS

Eat Your Greens! by www.mychild.ie

Healthy eating for children is one of the most important parenting topics, but what do you do if your child is a fussy or difficult eater? Mum, Hollie Smith shares her top tips from her book, ‘Dealing with Difficult Eaters: Stop mealtimes becoming a battleground with fussy children’, co-written with Dr. Sandi Mann and Sally Child.

1. Be Cool Easier said than done, admittedly, but it’s true that attitude is everything when it comes to feeding children. Never let them see that their food issues are upsetting you – in some cases it will simply make things worse.

2. Be Resilent Whether you’re trying to expand the limited food horizons of a fussy eater, or overhaul the habits of a child with a weight problem, you’ll need to be consistent, firm and resolute.

3. Be A Foodie Get them in the kitchen, cooking their own food, and in the garden, growing it. Take them shopping, let them choose, allow them to prepare meals and snacks. Experiment, try something different every so often.

4. Be A Good Eater Yourself Sit at the table with them, eat your greens, keep your treat intake limited. You are the foremost influence on your children, in eating and everything else.

7. Be Well Informed Do your homework so you know what the basics of nutrition are – that way, you’ll know off the top of your head what healthy alternatives you can offer a child who is asking for junk food. There are many different foods out there… it’s just a matter of discovering them all.

8. Be United Get everyone else involved on your side. There’s not much point in dealing with a difficult eater one way, if someone else is dealing with it a different way.

9. Be Reasonable Maybe your little difficult eater just doesn’t like certain foods, or maybe they have a perfectly understandable preference for white bread. Why not? A child should never be made to eat anything.

10. Be Moderate Don’t fret or obsess about food – apart from driving yourself insane, you may have the opposite effect to the one you were hoping for. What our kids eat is, and should be, something to care about and be concerned about. It’s all about balance. You can get your hands on a copy of Hollie's book at www.amazon.com.

Sponsored by:

5. Be Careful Don’t offer food as a bribe or reward, however desperate you get, and keep praise low-key. Be sure not to ‘label’ them – you may well have a difficult eater on your hands, but don’t call them one to their face.

6. Be Sensitive Watch out for the difficult eater with an underlying emotional need, and always treat the issue with care and understanding. 18 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

ABOUT GARDENING

Round the Garden in September September brings a definite shift in the feel of the garden. The colour palette changes to a ‘dryer' one with golden yellows, deep oranges, and glowing reds. A few plants suddenly shout for attention coming to the fore for the first time, but more start to prepare themselves for the colder times ahead. Ornamental grasses lead the way, with many ‘flowering' over the coming weeks.Of the perennials, of particular interest are Heuchera, Agapanthus, and Helenium (sunflower). All offer flower in the early September garden, with the sunflower providing the additional benefits of excellent height and structure and wonderful seed-heads. Elsewhere, interest is provided by fruiting plants. A September star plant is Callicarpa bodinieri ‘Profusion'. It's an unusual shrub grown for the

by Tom Percy

rich magenta colour of its plentiful berries which, whilst it does little of interest for a good part of the year, screams and shouts just when the garden needs a burst of something new. Finally, the garden centres will start to stock spring bulbs at this time of year, and it really pays to buy these now while they are fresh.Too many people seem to put off buying their bulbs until later in the season, but think about buying them now and take advantage of the better (and fresher) selections available.

ABOUT LOCAL COURSES & CLASSES

Local Courses & Classes Ok, you know how every year you promise yourself that you are going to take up a sport, hobby, learn something new or just get out of the house one evening per week? Well, there is no excuse this Autumn not to do so. There are plenty of inexpensive local courses and classes taking place throughout the coming weeks. So read on and get involved! Churchtown School of Music The Churchtown School of Music was established in 2005, in dedicated premises at Churchtown Park House. Last year we sent three students off to third level music colleges to start their graduate studies and this year we have another three going the same route. This year we are encouraging all those adults who have time on their hands to join us in the mornings to finish what they started all those years ago. Or simply just start from the beginning! We are also running Music Appreciation and Learn to Read Music classes. We also have Pre-Instrumental classes for ages 4,5 and 6. This is a 2 year course following on from Monkey Music. These classes bridge that gap between Monkey Music and choosing an instrument. After that we offer Intro to Guitar or Intro to Singing. These are group classes giving the children a taste of the discipline of learning an instrument in a comfortable setting. 22 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

Monkey Music Monkey Music was introduced to Ireland in 2007. Recently we were invited to collaborate with the RDS in providing Music Education for Junior and Senior Infants in two inner city schools. This has been a great success and is continuing in the Autumn. We are also delighted to announce that we will be running classes in The National Concert Hall starting Sat Sept. 5th. Our weekly classes will also continue in Churchtown School of Music on Monday and Saturday mornings. If your child is in pre-school and you can’t come to the classes don’t forget we can come to you. Just ask your Crèche/Montessori to contact us to organise a free demo session. TO ADVERTISE TELEPHONE 49 9 3022

ABOUT LOCAL COURSES & CLASSES

Local Courses & Classes Danú Yoga The word Yoga, meaning union, is about bringing balance to the whole self. Whether you are looking for deep relaxation, stress reduction or spiritual transformation, then Yoga has something to offer you. It is simple to learn, easy to practice and a tool that you can use throughout your lifetime. Yoga treats the person as a whole using postures, breathing, relaxation and meditation. Classes in the Danú Yoga Centre are structured around the Chakras. These are energy centres within the body which contain memories of all that the body has been through, not just on a physical level but emotionally and spiritually. A regular student, Ciara, who attends Danú Yoga Centre has said “Since starting Yoga I find my body and mind are more relaxed. My energy levels are higher. I feel more in touch with my body. Yoga has definitely contributed to my emotional well being.”

ABOUT LIFE COACHING

Mums – Are You Looking to Return to Work? Are you a Mum who is thinking of returning to work? Have you taken a brief Maternity leave or have you been a ‘stay at home’ Mum for several years? For some Mums the mere thought of re-entering the work place can be a daunting experience, no matter how short the period of absence. The thought of having to prepare for interviews can bring back dreaded memories similar to that of sitting the Leaving Certificate - the stuff of nightmares! In order to prepare for the inevitable here are some questions you might want to ask yourself - in no particular order: Are you planning on returning to the same employer? Do you want to work in the same profession? Do you need to upgrade your skills? Are you worried about the gap in your CV? Have you been putting off deciding when to return to work for ages? Are you lacking in confidence or has your selfesteem hit rock bottom? Are you dreading the day you willË have to go for an interview? Do you feel you need to prepare for this but you don’t know where to start?

Life and Business Coaching

Building your confidence is crucial before even considering applying for a job. You want to be able to put you best foot forward and let your future employer see that you are more than capable of juggling bringing up a family with holding down a career regardless of whether you are working full or part-time. Remember you only get one chance to make a first impression.

Are you stuck in a rut?

Preparation is the key. You know the old adage ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’. Here are some tips on how to get started. Firstly take some time out to decide what exactly it is you want to do. Once you have decided that you can work on the rest. Set out a plan of action. Make a list of all the things that will be necessary to put in place in order for you to go back to work.

September Computer Tip In the world of the internet, new language arrives all the time and in a matter of weeks you don't have a clue what people are talking about. Terms such as RSS, blogs, twitter, podcasting and phishing may not be everyday conversation ‘down the pub' but you'll hear it in the news, and see it on websites. Whilst a general internet search will show up text trying its best to describe these technologies, www.commoncraft.com does an excellent job of explaining all this with short cartoon-like videos. The site does also include a couple of videos on less obvious subjects like the benefits of using energy saving lightbulbs and electing a US president. There are only a small selection of videos at the moment (they are a husband and wife small company), but the site is well worth bookmarking as more are sure to be published over time.

ABOUT STYLE

Personal Style De-Mystified I was reflecting over the summer on what the recurring questions and issues were that I help clients with during the wardrobe de-cluttering and personal shopping times we have. Often it’s the personal style issue that concerns us most with the following questions coming up regularly: =Do I have a personal style and what is it? =How do I identify it? =How can I be age appropriate now that I’ve had that significant birthday? =I used to know what suited me but feel that I’ve lost my way somehow. It is easy to become confused between fashion and style, however personal style is not about following fashion – it’s about understanding what works for you, your body shape, your lifestyle, and how to express yourself effortlessly and comfortably by wearing your clothes confidently.

by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant Helena, in the Giddy Studios (above the shops) on Grange Road at Marley Park. We will consider the above questions and look at the importance of: body shape, clothing personality, colour, capsule wardrobe and using accessories to change outfits. The evening will begin at 7.30pm with a glass of wine and finish around 9.30 pm with tea/ coffee. The cost is €20 per person. If you are interested in attending please let me know by text (0868067702) or e-mail (janicecoyne@gmail.com) as places are limited. This should be a fun night ladies – let’s de-mystify the style issue once and for all!

We are surrounded by images of stick-thin models wearing clothes that wouldn’t suit the lifestyle of most of the women who look at them. Finding out how to sift through the new season’s fashion to find the pieces that suit and fit you can be a daunting task for even the most dedicated shopper and I know that for many of us that is just too much like hard work: we don’t know where to begin or what to look for. When you understand what your personal style is the hunt for the correct items becomes easier. Understanding what trends in the current fashion won’t suit you and interpreting the parts that will leaves you free to be selective and confident. On Tuesday the 29th of September I shall be hosting a personal style night, courtesy of 42 | ABOUT DUNDRUM

They will never forget precious quality time you thoughtfully create. Love is a winner for you at this time.
