Let’s celebrate dogs in our community! Have you ever stopped to think about how great dogs are? They’re always welcoming when we open the door. They’re the best of company and never answer back. They’re fun when we want to play. They support us with our special needs. They give us endless loyalty and security in our lives. So to acknowledge them we’re organising a great family Doggy Day Out in aid of The Dublin SPCA in Marlay Park on Saturday 8th May 2010, from 12pm to 4pm. Imagine being part of a local event to celebrate dogs – a day for all the family! You will be able to meet and talk to other dog owners, give your dog a great day out and participate in our many events for dogs that will be running in Marlay Park that day, including: Agility Testing; Temptation Tunnel; Micro-Chipping; Certificates of achievement for child and dog marathon, Dog Photography plus lots more!

Honey and Lemon Lamb & Raspberry Cranachan HONEY & LEMON LAMB 225g / 8oz Fresh raspberries 4 tsp Drambuie (or vanilla essence if preferred) 2 Tbsp Caster sugar 275ml /10 fl oz Double cream (chilled) Mint leaves (to decorate) Method: Toast the oatmeal lightly in a heavy pan. Whip the cream and Drambuie or vanilla until soft peaks form, adding the sugar slowly. 8 Lamb chops or any good cut, cubed Marinade 3 Tbsp Honey Fresh ground black pepper 2 Tbsp Lemon 1 Clove garlic 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 Tbsp Tomato sauce
Fold the toasted oatmeal into the cream mixture along with most of the raspberries. Decorate with the remaining raspberries and some mint leaves.
Method: Mix all the marinade ingredients together, softening the honey if necessary. Coat the lamb well and refrigerate. Leave for a few hours, overnight is good. Grill the chops, coating in the excess marinade. Any left over marinade can be heated and poured over chops.

Do You Know Your Director Duties? by Brendan Dillon, Dillon Solicitors When deciding to go into business people frequently opt to set up as a limited company due to the advantages it provides. It is important however that people becoming directors of these companies become Brendan Dillon familiar with the legal obligations and responsibilities attaching to their position. The primary function of the directors of a company is to manage the company on behalf of the members. A director has a fiduciary duty to act in a manner which places the interests of the company ahead of their own. This can be difficult as in many Irish companies the directors and members of the company are one and the same and therefore, it can be difficult to distinguish between the company’s property and the director/ member’s property resulting in directors treating company property as though it was their own.

Directors are obliged to carry out their functions with due care, skill and diligence and are liable for any loss resulting from their negligent behaviour. Director’s statutory duties: These duties arise under the Companies Acts 1963 2001 and include: 1. A director has a duty to comply with their obligations under the Companies Acts and to ensure the requirements of the Companies Acts are complied with by the company. Beat Exam Stress by Sara Sweetman If exam nerves are getting the better of you, read on... It used to be thought that being a child meant living the happiest days of your life. How times change. Now, with the points race, pressure on course places etc, more and more children are falling victim to stress. So if you (or your children if you are a parent reading this) are feeling pressured, with nowhere to turn, we have some great tips to help you get through exam season relatively unscathed. • First a few words about stress. Stress is caused by the way our body responds to outside events, not necessarily by the events themselves. Some stress is good: adaptive stress releases adrenaline and helps us to rise to a challenge. It’s a temporary state and the body returns to normal very quickly. Problem stress occurs when the body stays in a heightened state for a prolonged period of time. It’s this type of stress which causes problems for today’s children. Unlike when we were young and exams were end-of-term or even end-of year events, there now seems to be relentless pressure to perform all year round. The result of this is that children get very little down-time in which their body can recover from all that adrenaline. Not everyone suffers in the same way from stress. Some children seem to cope with it well. Research has shown that these children are generally more positive, have a good sense of humour and have parents who themselves deal well with potentially stressful situations. Some of the signs that a teenager is feeling under pressure are: • •
feeling excessively tired crying and seeming a bit down

having panic attacks even about stuff unrelated to schoolwork broken sleep stomach upsets and a change in appetite seeming unwell but without any specific symptoms
Finally, it’s useful to understand that while exams are important, they are not worth making yourself ill over. You can always sit them again. Exam Busting Tips: •
Get plenty of rest - sleep is important

Take regular breaks - you’ll stay fresher
•
Leave time for some fun - when you’ve reached your revision goal, reward yourself with an activity you enjoy
•
Be realistic - don’t overdo it
•
Eat properly - avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee or coke
•
Exercise - It’s a great stress buster and improves your mood
•
Be nice to yourself - don’t beat yourself up about the things you haven’t done: be positive about all you’ve achieved
•
Relax - When it all gets too much just chill for a while. You’ll feel much better

Round the Garden in May by Tom Percy May is a magical month when the garden is warm and enticing. Don’t discard the horticultural fleece just yet though, as a late frost can do enormous damage to tender young shoots. Prepare Carrot root fly is about, so cover the carrots securely to ensure the pests cannot gain access to lay their eggs. It’s also the time to cover fruit with net to keep raiding birds off. Continue to keep a vigilant guard against weeds. The best way of ensuring they don’t come back is constant use of the hoe to weaken seedlings before their roots get chance to grow down. Hoe on a dry day, so that the uprooted weeds have less chance of recovery.

Driving Ahead at Ballinascorney Golf Club, Rathfarnham by Pauline Kearney On March 21st the members of Ballinascorney Golf Club turned out in force to support their captains’ drive-in. This ever popular occasion ensured a full time sheet with shot gun starts at 10am and 2pm. The day boded well for a good year’s golf for club members, a club that has exciting plans for the development of the course during the coming year.
Many visitors have described Ballinascorney Golf Club as one of Dublin’s golfing hidden gems, situated as it is behind Marley Park. It’s a fiveminute drive from Rathfarnham Village and boasts spectacular panoramic views over Dublin City. It is an ideal course for any golfers or would-be golfers in the south-Dublin area.

The new layout is expected to be playable this summer. It has appointed Golf Course Maintenance Services Ltd to a 2-year contract to maintain and service the course. Their pedigree, being a joint venture set up by Carr Golf and the K Club, will ensure that the course is maintained to highest standards. The club management is also engaging them in the design and provision of a new course layout, which will greatly enhance the playing experience for the members of Ballinascorney Golf Club, societies and green fee visitors.

These are giant steps for a small club, where every new member and visitor is guaranteed a warm welcome. Many members have expressed delight at the improvement in the appearance of greens, fairways and bunkers on the course in recent months. The Thursday night mixed competition is an extremely popular occasion, in which many members are eager to take part. Bytes & Pieces Managing your email As email becomes more and more popular as a method of communicating, sorting the ‘wheat from the chaff’ becomes increasingly difficult. If you are expecting an important mail from a friend or are looking for an older email, it’s often a bit of search amongst all the marketing messages and order confirmations that are also sent to you. The trick is to set yourself up with two email accounts. Choose an easy to remember one for your friends and family to send messages on, and a more unusual address (making you less likely to get spam) for when you sign up to websites, or buy online. Mum’s the Word! Giddy Studios 'girls night' for Mother’s Day went down a storm. A full house meant that the atmosphere was unbelievable! Sam McMahon Trust – A Fundraising ‘Culinary’ Triumph! by Caroline McMahon You may remember in our last issue we highlighted the story of local boy Sam McMahon, who suffers from Friedreich’s Ataxia. We asked your help to support a fundraising event organised by his family to raise funds for the Sam McMahon Trust. Well, on March 8th at the Grosvenor Suite in the D4 Berkeley hotel, over 400 people attended the Neven Maguire Cookery Demonstration. It was a complete sell-out! His mum Caroline wrote this report. The evening kicked off with a wine reception, during which Neven's new book ‘Home Chef’, was snapped up!
The second session saw Neven bake Warm Pear Tarts with Citrus Mascarpone Cream and Spun Sugar Curls to decorate. When the show was over Neven posed for endless photos and signed book after book. Words can’t convey his generosity and kindness. Not only is Neven Maguire a superb chef but he is a gentle, kind man who was willing to give his time to the Sam McMahon Trust. He presented Sam with a signed copy of his book and encouraged him and his brother to try out the recipes. We, at the Trust are also grateful to Neven’s wife Amelda, who was involved in planning the event and John from Flogas who assisted Neven and supplied copies of the recipes for the demonstration.
During the first session, Neven selected what he considered to be the perfect three-course meal from ‘Home Chef’ and guided the audience through the recipes. Gratin of Hake with Prawns, Spinach and Pesto and a Chicken Chorizo Rice Bake looked and smelled divine.
Thanks are also due to all of the people who bought tickets, donated prizes for the raffle and who worked so hard to ensure that the event was a great success. We raised a fantastic total of €10,500.
We were instilled with confidence that we could recreate them at home.
We have arranged another cookery demonstration with TV3 celebrity chef Andrew Rudd in aid of the Trust and at the Loreto National School, Rathfarnham Parent’s Association on 23rd May.
We raffled some fantastic prizes, including a meal at Neven’s McNeans Restaurant, during the break - all of which added to the fundraising cause.
