Pumpkin Shortbread Cook the Pumpkin: Cut the deseeded pumpkin flesh into small chunks. Steam or boil with a little water for about 20-25 minutes. Ingredients: 120g (4oz) plain flour 50g (2oz) butter 50g (2oz) icing sugar 1 egg yolk, beaten Topping: 120g (4oz) cooked pumpkin 225ml (8fl oz) single cream 225g (8oz) light brown sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon Icing sugar, for dusting Instructions: Pre-heat oven to 350°F/175°C/Gas mark 4. Grease and line a shallow 18 x 28cm (7x11in) tin. Sift the flour and icing sugar into a bowl and rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and mix to a dough. Lightly knead on a floured surface until smooth, and then press into the base of the tin. Lightly prick all over with a fork and bake for 10 minutes, until golden. For the filling: Purée the cooked pumpkin until smooth. Stir in the cream, eggs, sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the base and bake for a further 40 to 45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin, then cut into 18 fingers. Remove from the tin and lightly dust with icing sugar before serving. 10 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS

Civil Partnership – A New Beginning by Brendan Dillion, Dillon Solicitors The purpose of the Civil Partnerships Bill 2009 is to establish a statutory civil partnership registration scheme for same-sex couples together with an extensive package of rights, obligations and protections for those who register under the scheme. The Bill also establishes a redress scheme for opposite-sex and same-sex couples, cohabiting couples who are not married or registered as civil partners. The Civil Partnerships Bill will have a significant impact on many areas of the law including family, probate and property law. The following are some of the key provisions of the Bill: Civil Partners • A statutory civil partnership registration scheme for same-sex couples. • The introduction of the concept of a ‘shared home’. Where civil partners share a home one partner will not be able to sell or mortgage the property without the prior written consent of the other civil partner. • A civil partner will have the legal right to claim from the estate of a deceased partner irrespective of whether or not their partner had made a will. • Pension schemes which include a spousal benefit will be deemed to also apply to civil partners.

including maintenance, property and pension adjustment orders and provision from the estate of a deceased cohabitant. • A provision that a same-sex cohabitant of a deceased person has the same right as an opposite-sex cohabitant of a deceased person to seek damages in the event of his or her cohabitant's wrongful death.

Cohabiting Couples

• The recognition of cohabitant agreements which regulate the shared financial affairs of cohabiting couples.

• A redress scheme for opposite-sex and same-sex cohabiting couples. This scheme will allow a financially dependent cohabitant to apply to court for certain remedies

If you require any further information on any aspect of Civil Partnership please contact us on 01 296 0666 or by email on info@dillon.ie

ABOUT CHILDREN - DIFFICULT EATERS

Eat Your Greens! by www.mychild.ie Healthy eating for children is one of the most important parenting topics, but what do you do if your child is a fussy or difficult eater? Mum, Hollie Smith, shares her top tips from her book, ‘Dealing with Difficult Eaters: Stop mealtimes becoming a battleground with fussy children’, co-written with Dr. Sandi Mann and Sally Child. 1. Be Cool Easier said than done, admittedly, but it’s true that attitude is everything when it comes to feeding children. Never let them see that their food issues are upsetting you – in some cases it will simply make things worse. 2. Be Resilient Whether you’re trying to expand the limited food horizons of a fussy eater, or overhaul the habits of a child with a weight problem, you’ll need to be consistent, firm and resolute. 3. Be A Foodie Get them in the kitchen, cooking their own food, and in the garden, growing it. Take them shopping, let them choose, allow them to prepare meals and snacks. Experiment, try something different every so often. 4. Be A Good Eater Yourself Sit at the table with them, eat your greens, keep your treat intake limited. You are the foremost influence on your children, in eating and everything else.

7. Be Well Informed Do your homework so you know what the basics of nutrition are – that way, you’ll know off the top of your head what healthy alternatives you can offer a child who is asking for junk food. There are many different foods out there… it’s just a matter of discovering them all. learn to draw spooky halloween cartoons with amazing cartoon illustrator chris judge. create a life size spooky character of your own! when: october 27th & 28th time: 11.00am to 1.30pm

giddy studios

9. Be Reasonable Maybe your little difficult eater just doesn’t like certain foods, or maybe they have a perfectly understandable preference for white bread. Why not? A child should never be made to eat anything.

rathfarnham, d 16 p: 01 4240440 m: 0879879515 w: giddystudios.com

10. Be Moderate Don’t fret or obsess about food – apart from driving yourself insane, you may have the opposite effect to the one you were hoping for. What our kids eat is, and should be, something to care about and be concerned about. It’s all about balance. You can get your hands on a copy of Hollie's book at www.amazon.com

5. Be Careful Don’t offer food as a bribe or reward, however desperate you get, and keep praise low-key. Be sure not to ‘label’ them – you may well have a difficult eater on your hands, but don’t call them one to their face. 6. Be Sensitive Watch out for the difficult eater with an underlying emotional need, and always treat the issue with care and understanding. 18 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

8. Be United Get everyone else involved on your side. There’s not much point in dealing with a difficult eater one way, if someone else is dealing with it a different way.

Round the Garden in October - Garden Bulbs

GARDEN FORCE

by Tom Percy

{CORR DESIGNS}

Before the end of October, you should ensure that you have planted your spring bulbs. Tulip bulbs should wait a little longer until nearer the beginning of November however, as this reduces the risk of them developing virus. You should however aim to plant before any hard frosts occur.

drainage. Put some broken crockery in the bottom of the pot and add enough grit to leave an inch or two's layer beneath the soil. Whilst you don't want to overwater them, if your tubs are very sheltered or we have a particularly dry winter, a watering won't go amiss on a frost free day.

The range of bulbs available these days is immense. Miniature daffodils are very popular for small gardens, although you can't beat the standard ones for a big splash of colour. But think beyond daffodils to hyacinths, snowdrops, iris, allium and crocus bulbs to get a variety of colour. If you don't like seeing all the foliage left in your garden after the spring flowering, plant your bulbs in tubs. You must ensure that your pots have good

ABOUT MARKETING

Will Your Company Survive the Slowdown? by Fiona Tuomey As the credit crunch continues to bite and the disposable income available to many households decreases, there are few businesses that aren’t feeling the pinch.

you can! But you need to advertise where your ideal future clients/customers are and give them a BIG enough reason to inspire them to take the action you require. We can help you with this message.

The old adage is that at times like this, spending on marketing is often the first thing to go. This is actually a false logic as advertising is an investment in your business, not an overhead. When there is an economic slowdown, the spending pie available to business shrinks. To even stand still you must increase your share of that pie. If you stop marketing while your competitors continue to do so, you will find yourself with a smaller share of that shrinking pie.

Is there a marketing package available to you? Every business is different. We can meet the needs of any business from a one-man-operation to a national organisation. You can reach 5,000 homes from as little as â‚Ź25 per issue.

During the recession, your prospective clients/customers are looking for the best value for money possible. This requires super-effective marketing, as you will need YOUR message to stand out and then convince people, more powerfully than your competitors.

Remember, advertising is only intended to drive a response. If the phone is ringing but you are not winning new business, try asking your potential customers why they didn’t buy from you. Don’t forget competitors are here to be competed with and knowledge is power. ABOUT HALLOWEEN

5 Ideas for a Stress Free Halloween by Fiona Tuomey As the years pass, we have become more ‘American’ in our celebration of Halloween. Costumes have become more elaborate (fewer bin liners!) and Halloween decorations more elaborate. But if you're a working parent, you probably want ideas for making Halloween safe and fun for the kids and easy for you. 1. Keep the Costume Simple Devoted mums sewing her child’s Halloween costume from scratch is a myth. The most elaborate costumes I see at Halloween are shop bought. Homemade costumes tend to be dress-up clothes or creative uses of polonecks and bedsheets. So, unless you adore crafts, keep it simple. Your little one will be delighted to wear their favourite tutu or fire fighter's helmet, with colour co-ordinated clothes you already own. If you or your child want something shop bought, check out eBay, dublinwaste.ie and your local charity shop for deals. You can find gorgeous costumes for under â‚Ź10 each. It's certainly easier than staying up all night making a monkey costume!

•

Find a way to make your child visible to cars, whether it's light-up shoes, a glow-in-the-dark wrist band, etc.

4. Choose Sweet Free Treats I would never want to be the killjoy who gives apples to the children. But, there's something to be said for handing out treats that won't rot their teeth. Think about giving out fake tattoos or little toys that you'd put in a goodie bag. You can find them in the ₏uro discount shops, Penny’s etc.

in Ballinteer Community School, Dublin 16 (10am to 1pm daily)

5. Find Another Way to Celebrate If you can’t get home from work on time, explore whether some friends or relatives would want to join you for a Halloween party on the weekend closest to the day. Whatever you decide - have fun and take some photos of your children. The time passes quickly and these times will be treasured memories in the future.

2. Pick a Good Time to ‘Trick or Treat’ When to trick or treat will depend on your child's bedtime and your work schedule. Little children may find it too hard to stay up past 7pm, so go ahead and take them right after dinner. Many parents I know leave work early on Halloween, to eat earlier and go out trick or treating. It's tempting to stretch the kids' bedtime but this can lead to meltdowns. 3. Make Safety the Priority Halloween should only be scary for fun - not for real. So keep safety above all else and make sure your children are aware of what they can do to stay safe. If you decide to let your older kids go out without an adult, give them a charged mobile phone to carry. Make sure you agree on the route they will take and when they should be home. They should carry a flashlight and promise to stay together. Other safety tips include: • Make sure any masks are easy to remove and leave room to breathe. • Choose costumes that are appropriate for the weather! Avoid purple legs and shivering children. 24 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

ABOUT STYLE

Personal Style De-Mystified by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant I was reflecting over the summer on what the recurring questions and issues were that I help clients with during the wardrobe de-cluttering and personal shopping times we have. Often it’s the personal style issue that concerns us most with the following questions coming up regularly:

On Tuesday the 3rd of November I will be hosting a personal style night in the Giddy Studios on Grange Road. We will consider the above questions and look at the importance of: body shape, clothing personality, colour, capsule wardrobe and using accessories to change outfits.

• Do I have a personal style and what is it?

The evening will begin at 7.30pm with a glass of wine and finish with tea/coffee around 9.30pm. The cost is €20 per person.

• How do I identify it? • How can I be age appropriate now that I’ve had that significant birthday? • I used to know what suited me but feel that I’ve lost my way somehow.

on Saturday Mornings

Good level of fitness and core stability required

If you are interested in attending please let me know by text or e-mail as places are limited. This should be a fun night ladies – let me de-mystify the style issue once and for all!

It is easy to become confused between fashion and style, however personal style is not about following fashion, it is about understanding what works for you, your body shape, your lifestyle, and how to express yourself effortlessly and comfortably by wearing your clothes confidently. We are surrounded by images of stick thin models wearing clothes that wouldn’t suit the lifestyle of most of the women who look at them. Finding out how to sift through the new seasons fashion to find the pieces that suit and fit you can be a daunting task for even the most dedicated shopper and I know that for many of us that is just too much like hard work: we don’t know where to begin or what to look for. When you understand what your personal style is, the hunt for the correct items becomes easier. Realising what trends in the current fashion won’t suit you and interpreting the parts that will, leave you free to be selective and confident. 26 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS

Finding Time for Romance by David Kavanagh, Avalon Finding time for romance often proves to be difficult if not impossible for most people these days. Hectic work schedules, household chores, taking care of your children’s endless demands usually leave you exhausted at the end of a long week. When you are juggling a busy lifestyle and a relationship, finding time to keep the candles (never mind the fires) of romance burning can be a huge struggle. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’re trying to regain some time for the love that you have, following these simple steps below should make your struggle to regain romance a whole lot easier. If your relationship is a priority to you, then you should be giving it all the attention it needs. • Create your own simple rituals that show you care for each other, such as leaving notes, a phone call or emailing each day.

• Give each other a kiss when coming and going. Give plenty of hugs and try to laugh together. • Plan a regular "date" night once a week and stick to it. • Make a “love list” - write out ten things you would like your partner to do for you each month, neck massages, foot rubs etc, (small things that don’t take a huge amount of time) and commit to doing at least two a week. It is very easy to drift apart from each other. You need to validate each other’s experiences and make time for your partner, however difficult this is. Make lists of what you have to do during the week, see what can be deferred or delegated and use this time as quality time with each other.

Trevor Dunne & Co.

• Listen without giving advice, taking responsibility, or trying to "fix" things. Let your mate enjoy the luxury of knowing that you are really listening, only giving feedback when asked.

S o l i c i t o r s 21 Main Street, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14

• Talk to each other about what's going on in your lives besides the day-to-day running of the household or office talk.

IRELAND’S MOST POPULAR PRE-MARRIAGE COURSE

• Turn off the TV for 15 minutes every night to talk and check in with each other.

€140 PER COUPLE

• Instead of the standard, "How was your day?" exchange, pick at least one good thing about your day and share it with each other. • Date at unusual times - make breakfast dates and brunch dates or meet each other for drinks after work. You can keep the dates short. • Hire help - Hire a babysitter or someone to cut the lawn and use the time to do things together. 30 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

ABOUT REFLEXOLOGY

Barbara Brown - Looking After Body & Sole by Jennifer Greene Barbara Brown is a qualified Reflexology therapist from Ballycullen. She has been a qualified Reflexologist for 2 years, following training by The Healing House and holds an ITEC Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology and Reflexology. Barbara practices from her therapy room in Rathfarnham, but also gives clients the option of treatment in their own home.

So, where did the interest in reflexology start? “I have always had a keen interest in alternative medicine and I have seen its benefits first hand. My mum was my tutor on the Reflexology course, as she has been a teacher and practitioner for the last 16 years. I continue to learn and I am currently studying Holistic Massage and I will be fully qualified by Christmas this year”, Barbara explained. I asked Barbara to dispel a few of the myths and answer a few questions many potential clients may have about Reflexology.

problems; back and joint pain; and insomnia, are just a few of the conditions reflexology may help to relieve. Many people may think 'my feet look horrible and will be commented upon'. - Is this true? No. Before starting a treatment, a reflexologist will examine your feet. If they feel you may need treatment from a chiropodist or doctor for a foot condition eg verrucas or corns, they will tell you. Other than that they are there to do a job and aren't judging your feet, or indeed you. Your feet have their own shape and structure, and are nothing to be ashamed of! Sum up reflexology in a sentence Reflexology is the technique of applying gentle pressure to reflex points on the feet and hands to bring about a state of deep relaxation, stimulate the body’s own healing process and help a person return to a state of balance and well-being (homeostasis).

Who can have reflexology? From newborn babies to the very elderly. Your age and state of health are taken into consideration by the therapist, when planning the nature and duration of your treatment. Then the pressure he/she uses will be adjusted to meet your individual needs. Reflexology is torture if you are ticklish - Is this True? No! As soon as you relax you’ll find that the firm, sure touch used by the therapist doesn't tickle. I have never lost a client because they found the treatment ticklish, even those who were bracing themselves for an ordeal have been very pleasantly surprised. What does reflexology actually do for you? Reflexology is a holistic treatment, since the whole person is treated instead of singling out a symptom. A reflexology treatment works through each organ, gland and body system. It has many benefits including relaxation, pain and stress relief, improved circulation and digestion, stimulation of the immune and nervous systems, and balance for the mind, body and spirit. Digestive disorders eg Irritable Bowel or acid reflux; migraines; sinus problems; PMS and hormone related problems; pregnancy, fertility and menopause related 32 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

ARIES

LIBRA

Take a brake Aries and take good stock of the role you yourself play in the latest dilemma you find yourself in. The problem exists as you continue to do your thinking inside the proverbial box, instead of taking a good long look at the overall long picture. Love is good when you work a little more on the romantic side.

A late holiday, or cruise perhaps? Is well starred for the fortunate Libran. Go on, take a loved one on the bargain trip of a lifetime, you wont regret it. This recession has been the catalyst to your impending lifestyle change. Well done Libra, you finally got with the programme and are finding the true balance of mind, body, senses and spirit.

TAURUS

SCORPIO

Well! well! Taurus. You have so much on your plate and so many choices in all areas of your life. What to do? It’s simple! Do nil for now and wait your time to make decisions based on current need circumstance. Romance leads you to an evening of formal wear and is a time and place where love can blossom all the way to commitment.

The arts are calling you to perform your unique brand of entertainment for the avidly awaiting crowd. So, whether its your special brand of painting or treading the boards or maybe even ice dancing. You are at your happiest earning a living doing what you love. Do not fret about love, when it’s real, it stays.

GEMINI

This autumnal season can be so good for you when it comes to you rejuvenating your weary batteries. Walking among natures’ fragrant greenery is just the aromatherapy you need. Soul-mating on this level of grounded understanding is the most satisfying basis for a working relationship.

You may feel tired and poorly rewarded for your efforts. But, you must realise this is not a life and death situation, rather a passing phase which can give you the opportunity to show your strength and unique talents. An offer to jet away to a foreign space is one not to be missed. Plenty of laughter keeps romance near.

SAGITTARIUS

CAPRICORN

An elder can talk sense, its up to you to listen well and learn. Your love life is your business and nobody can tell you how to feel, so, getting the balance between what makes good sense and downright interference is important. A job offer which has the potential to take you abroad on a regular basis is not to be sneezed at.

A career in computer technology is forecast for the ambitious Capricorn. It’s no harm to know as much as you can about computers as the forthcoming trend will take on a deviant, although similarly conducive trail. The next few weeks sees you following the path of publishing. Your work is more than acceptable. A word of caution: yours is just one opinion. Allow others have theirs.

LEO

AQUARIUS

Life’s lottery is set to be good to you at this time Leo. As you begin to reap the rewards of your personal efforts, your positivity soars to an all time high. You become a very sharing person to those you hold dear. Your natural gift to organise a charitable event is needed now. You and a partner could do with a decent break - a Greek island perhaps?

Cards advise that you remove yourself from the equation and see things from a totally different perspective. Life has so much to offer you but, you can sometimes not see the woods because the trees are in the way. Avoid pushing things out of the way, rather allow these things show you an alternative tomorrow.

VIRGO

PISCES

A Taurus or Capricorn can influence your luck this month. So, whether it’s numbers or names, you are sure to be the overall winner. Unattached? A stranger speaking a foreign tongue is set to capture your heart. An idea to make extra cash is financially viable. Talk to the relative experts. Reconciliation with a loved one is forecast.

As you prepare to go all out holistic in your thinking, a like-minded individual is watching your every move with unbiased admiration. You were always a most psychic individual and will not allow any influence other than your gut (spirit) tell you what to do or how to think. Yes, you are so loved! You get what you deserve so, treat love well.
