One thing that is for sure, is that school holidays will happen and Summer Camps will be in demand! So, once again this year, we have a fantastic ‘summer camp special’ for you. Camps for young children, right up to teenagers - all run by locals for locals. There is everything on offer from sports activities, arts & crafts to languages. So, don’t delay - book your places! The Summer Camp Special will run across our Dundrum and Rathfarnham issues next month. So, if you missed out, just call us to be included for the July issues. If you would like to Highlight a local event, cause, group or community activitity, why not get in touch? This page is given over free of charge. Last month we Highlighted Carolyn Huey’s ‘Doggy Day Out’ in Marlay Park. By all accounts it was a wonderful success, with thousands raised for the DSPCA. Thank you all for supporting a great cause. On a personal note, this is my last time publishing About Knocklyon. It has been more than 4 years since I put out the first issue (my it has improved!!) and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of it. I have met hundreds of wonderful local people and unearthed local gems through the clubs, activities and groups all active in the area. I also got to know hundreds of local business people, with businesses of every shape and size. I am stepping aside to develop ‘About Magazines’ as a licenced business and hopefully bring more ‘About Magazines’ issues to communities around Dublin and beyond. If you want to know more (see page 47) just give me a call on 499 3022. Stuart Ferguson will now be at the helm and is your new contact for the magazine. His looking forward to hearing from you. I am sure that you will support Stuart and continue to provide him with your local news, events and advertising in the months ahead.

ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESS

Pauline has the ‘Ki’ for success! by Fiona Tuomey We have all been bombarded with bad news stories of businesses closing and redundancies. However, it is not all doom and gloom. There are plenty of enterprising local people, who are turning things and putting their best entrepreneurial foot forward!

pop down to see Pauline in Tramway Cottage and find your ‘Ki’ to a renewed you! You can find Pauline and Ki for Life at Tramway Cottage, 19 Rathfarnham Road, Terenure, Dublin 6. Phone: (01) 406 7675. www.kiforlife.com

Last year Pauline McDermott was made redundant from her job at a local estate agent. However, while Pauline was greatly saddened by her job loss, she picked herself up and decided to forge ahead and open her own business. For many years Pauline studied Complementary therapies including Shiatsu, Bio-Energy and Hypnotherapy. She has worked with individuals and businesses in Ireland and UK, but purely as a labour of love and a way of generating a small income. Redundancy proved to be the push she needed to realize her dreams.

Pauline McDermott, Ki for Life

According to Pauline: “I believe that some things happen for a reason. As soon as I made the decision to open my own business, beautiful premises called ‘Tramway Cottage’ came available on the Rathfarnham Road”. “It was the perfect location for my business, Ki for Life, a little oasis of peace, right in the heart of Terenure”. ‘Ki’ means ‘Energy’ in Japanese and Pauline offers a range of complementary treatments which offer clients a chance to recharge, relax and re-energize. Pauline explained: “I suffered ill-health for many years and benefitted greatly from treatments such as Bio-Energy and Shiatsu. This lead to a life-long interest in complementary therapies. At Ki for Life we offer treatments, regular workshops and free trial classes for people who may not be familiar with our treatments, but would like to find out more.” So, if you find yourself stressed out, lacking in energy or simply in need of a bit of TLC, why not 12 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

ABOUT LOCAL CLUBS

Driving Ahead at Ballinascorney Golf Club, Rathfarnham by Pauline Kearney On March 21st the members of Ballinascorney Golf Club turned out in force to support their captains’ drive-in. This ever popular occasion ensured a full time sheet with shot gun starts at 10am and 2pm. The day boded well for a good year’s golf for club members, a club that has exciting plans for the development of the course during the coming year.

Many visitors have described Ballinascorney Golf Club as one of Dublin’s golfing hidden gems, situated as it is behind Marley Park. It’s a fiveminute drive from Rathfarnham Village and boasts spectacular panoramic views over Dublin City. It is an ideal course for any golfers or would-be golfers in the south-Dublin area.

The club has taken a number of significant steps in recent months Plans recently approved by members include an extension to the golf course and provision of a par 5 hole. The new layout is expected to be playable this summer. It has appointed Golf Course Maintenance Services Ltd to a 2-year contract to maintain and service the course. Their pedigree, being a joint venture set up by Carr Golf and the K Club, will ensure that the course is maintained to highest standards. The club management is also engaging them in the design and provision of a new course layout, which will greatly enhance the playing experience for the members of Ballinascorney Golf Club, societies and green fee visitors.

Captain 2010 Jim Kennedy and Lady Captain Maureen Flanagan.

These are giant steps for a small club, where every new member and visitor is guaranteed a warm welcome. Many members have expressed delight at the improvement in the appearance of greens, fairways and bunkers on the course in recent months. All members of Ballinascorney Golf Club have unrivalled access to the course with very few limitations or restrictions on tee times. The social activities associated with the club are renowned. The Thursday night mixed competition is an extremely popular occasion, in which many members are eager to take part. If you enjoy your golf and the social activity associated with a club with full club house facilities, then this is the place to be. At the moment there are a limited number of memberships available to gents and ladies, at very affordable fees. 14 | ABOUT KNOCKLYON

ABOUT GARDENING

Round the Garden in June by Tom Percy June is a wonderful month, with lots of sunshine, no risk of frost, and plenty of daylight hours to spend in the garden. Prepare Tomatoes being moved from greenhouse to outdoors should be conditioned for a few days. Take them out during the day and put them back at night to avoid the shock of a change in climate. Plants which have finished flowering can be lifted and divided in June. Now is the time to stake carnations and dahlias to encourage upright growth. Mulch around trees and shrubs to conserve moisture.

Prune Continue to thin out carrots, parsnips, beetroot and other such plants. This is also the month to thin out plums and apples, but it’s best to wait until after the trees’ natural shedding before tackling this job. Cut back on untidy growth of bushes and shrubs and remove unsightly seed heads. One thing to bear in mind is that the garden isn’t just about work. It is also a part of the home, a place to use and enjoy. So make sure that you allocate time to do simply nothing, apart from rest in the shade and admire your handiwork.

Plant Purchased and greenhouse raised plants can be planted out this month, but do make sure to water in really well. Sowing should be done in sets to give a succession of fresh salad and vegetables over the coming months. In very dry weather, it is a good idea to thoroughly soak the seed drill prior to sowing.

Bytes & Pieces Managing your email As email becomes more and more popular as a method of communicating, sorting the ‘wheat from the chaff’ becomes increasingly difficult. If you are expecting an important mail from a friend or are looking for an older email, it’s often a bit of search amongst all the marketing messages and order confirmations that are also sent to you. The trick is to set yourself up with two email accounts. Choose an easy to remember one for your friends and family to send messages on, and a more unusual address (making you less likely to get spam) for when you sign up to websites, or buy online. For example, you could have one account with your ISP (e.g. yourname@o2.ie) and another with an independent operator such as hotmail or googlemail e.g. yourname@googlemail.com. You can use their own programs to access the mail, or use something like Windows Mail, Windows Live, or Thunderbird (free from Mozilla) to see both accounts in one window but in separate folders.
