ABOUT HEATING
Staying Warm this Winter by Brian McGarry, Plumber As the weather gets colder and heating bills rise, there are many low cost options which will help you to reduce your bills. You know that closing doors and windows, adding insulation, installing double glazing and turning off radiators in rooms which are not in use all help. Here are a few you may not have considered:
LPG or pellet boilers. You can find more information about the efficiency of boilers and where to purchase them on www.sei.ie/harp Finally, if you book your boiler service before 31st Jan I will also give you a FREE central heating survey!
Turn Your Heating Down Just 1ºC can knock 10% off your heating bill! Keep your thermostat at 20ºC. Programme Your Heat Get a programmable thermostat or programmable radiator controls to vary temperatures throughout the day, keeping the heat down when not needed. Follow the 30-Minute Rule Set the heating to switch off 30 minutes before bedtime, and set it to turn on 30 minutes before you get up in the morning. Take a Shower Consider a shower instead of a bath - a shower usually uses about a fifth of the energy of a full bath. You might also consider installing a low-flow shower head to reduce the amount of hot water being used. Get Your Boiler Serviced Have your boiler inspected and serviced by a professional every year and you will save a minimum of €150 a year! An annual boiler service will reduce the likelihood of breakdown, save money; reduce CO2 emissions and improve your boiler's reliability and safety. Remember, by law, only an RGII member can service a gas boiler. If you have a boiler older than 15 years then it is likely that during the next few years that you will have to replace it on reliability grounds. Change it now and start saving immediately! If you have a natural gas supply then it is likely to be the lowest cost option in terms of both boiler installation cost and running cost. If you don’t have a natural gas supply then the choice is between oil, 8 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS
Family Law Mediation by Brendan Dillon, Dillon Solicitors Many people associate marital breakup with letters between solicitors, trips to court, huge legal bills and an enormous amount of stress and emotional trauma for both spouses and, in particular, their children.
There is little doubt that by engaging in a mediated process the parties will reduce their legal costs significantly from the costs that would be incurred if they went to court. There is also the added advantage of retaining control of the outcome as mediation can only be successful if the parties themselves reach an agreement which is obviously much better than asking a judge to impose an outcome on the parties. I myself have extensive experience in the area of family law, having advised on all aspects of family law for many years and trained as a family law mediator. If you have any queries in relation to how family law mediation might be of interest or assistance to you please do not hesitate to contact us and we would be happy to explain the process in detail.
In recent years however there has been a move away from the traditional means of resolving family law disputes.
For more information on family mediation or any aspect of family law please contact Dillons by phone on 2960 666, email at info@dillon.ie or log onto our website www.dillon.ie
A number of years ago a family law resolution model known as collaborative law was developed here. This involves both solicitors working together with the two spouses and all four parties meeting on several occasions with a view to the resolving in a mature and constructive fashion all of the issues which require to be agreed in relation to property, other assets, maintenance, custody and access, pensions, taxation and succession act issues. In the last six months a number of solicitors in Dublin have trained as family lawyer mediators. Mediation is a process where the husband and the wife attend a number of sessions of mediation with a view to resolving their issues and coming up with a set of proposals which is then converted into a binding agreement by their solicitors. The role of the mediator is to facilitate the discussions between the husband and the wife. The mediator can provide information but not legal advice. The mediator’s role is to maintain a focus on the resolution of the issues and look for ways and mechanisms as to unlock the difficulties. The training which was conducted through a U.K. model known as Resolution which has been operating successfully in the U.K. for the last fifteen years is based on a child centered approach to the resolution of family law issues. The experience in the United Kingdom has demonstrated quite clearly that the impact of family law breakup on children is greatly alleviated if the parties can reach a resolution of the issues between them in a constructive and mature manner, without having to engage in lengthy and confrontational legal proceedings. 14 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ABOUT GARDENING
Round The Garden in January by Tom Percy Prepare If you have some mildish weather this month, take the opportunity to dig over your ground. This will expose any garden pests and provide a snack for birds.
Prune Prune apples and pears as soon as you have a milder day and remove old fruit, either hanging or on the ground, as these encourage pests.
It’s a good idea to check all tree stakes and make sure greenhouse glass is secure against high winds. When you harvest cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, swedes or turnips, turn the ground over, burying the stems in the bottom of a trench to prepare a perfect spot for runner beans.
Now is the time to prepare grafts by cutting trees back. After cutting, scions for should be labeled and heeled into the ground ready for use. Use lime wash or a caustic soda spray to treat the stumps of old fruit trees, making sure you remove all dead bark. Do not be tempted to prune soft fruits, such as apricots, cherries, figs, nectarines or peaches.
Plant Seed potatoes benefit from being "sprouted" before planting. Place the seed potatoes in a warm and light area to let the eyes sprout. The potatoes will then grow quickly after planting. Hotbeds can be used to force asparagus, broad beans, carrots, onions and radishes. Early cucumbers can be seeded under glass or in a hotbed. Avoid planting trees this month unless absolutely necessary and then only do so from pots. If you have to do so, protect base with a covering of well rotted manure.

ABOUT STYLE
Happy New You! – Balance & Shape by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant Happy New Year Ladies! By the time you read this Christmas will have come and gone in a busy blur and we'll be looking out at the short dark days hoping that spring will make an early appearance this year. What to do with the long dark nights? Happy New Year Ladies! By the time you read this Christmas will have come and gone in a busy blur and we'll be looking out at the short dark days hoping that spring will make an early appearance this year. What to do with the long dark nights? In September last year I hosted a Style Night in Giddy Studios in Rathfarnham and many of you came and had a fun time looking at the issues that arise when we try to figure out the difference between style and fashion.
Finding out what our best features are and enhancing them with both the style or length of our clothes as well as the clever use of the correct accessories can open up your existing wardrobe in new and interesting ways. This need not cost the earth either, as eye catching necklaces and belts are particularly popular at the moment. We shall have a closer look at how to use accessories in the best way for your body shape and discover the simple answers to the question of updating a look without breaking the bank. As before the night will begin with a glass of wine at 7.30pm, concluding with tea/coffee at 9.30pm and cost €20. Please text or e-mail me to book a place as numbers will be limited. Hope to see you there ladies.
I discovered on that night that a question almost everyone wanted an answer to was on body shape and how to dress to enhance or disguise what nature had endowed us with. I have therefore set another date for Tuesday the 2nd of February. I hope to take more time to discuss different body shapes and allow time for questions relating to this. The key words to keep in mind when we are making decisions for ourselves on what to wear and how to wear it are “balance” and “proportion”. How to bring balance to your own shape and silhouette will depend on your height and the proportions of your body. Two people of similar height and body shape can still be differently proportioned and therefore would need to be mindful of this when choosing clothes. This can explain how, if you are shopping with a friend of similar size and colouring to yourself, an outfit can look great on one of you and not the other. 22 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN
New Year’s Resolution …. New Year’s Renovation For Your Home! by Karen O’Rourke Interior designer Karen O’Rourke has a passion for Period Homes and through her business Renovation Coach, she offers clients an unique personal advice package, aimed at those who are more than a little daunted by the thought of restyling one room or their whole house! “Ideal for homeowners or landlords, we assist on a 1-to-1 basis to renovate their property and in the process saving Time, Money and Mistakes.” says O’Rourke, “We assess the space which requires attention and then offer advice on layout, colour and soft furnishings.” The Renovation Coach package involves two meetings - the first, to understand the client’s needs and the type of project they would like to do. At this meeting Karen looks at the orientation of the house, takes measurements or takes copies of plans if they exist. The Coach then returns for a second meeting, having familiarised herself with the house and project. Areas that will require special attention are highlighted. A question session raises questions and possible problems which the client hasn’t even thought of …YET! Putting off until tomorrow what can be done today! “We meet people every day who are not living in the home they want to live in. They keep putting the redecoration off until weeks turn into months and then years” says O’Rourke. “Many home owners would love to transform their homes with the help of an Interior Designer but most think that only people with big properties and even bigger budgets can afford one! In fact, by contracting an Interior Designer a saving of 15% to 25% can be made of the total interior spend - even after paying their fee.” Karen’s main business is Concept Design Interiors in Rathgar which specialises in helping clients make the most of their properties while avoiding costly mistakes. Established by O’Rourke in 1999 Concept Design Interiors advises property owners on how to achieve quality and well designed finishes to their properties. 24 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

Total Hair Care - A Totally New Experience! Total Hair Care’s new salon officially opened in Rathfarnham last month, with a galaxy of stars and glamour in attendance. Officially opened by TV3’s Glenda Gilson, the salon also featured on TV3’s Xposé. Audrey Rogers, established her Total Hair Care salon back in 2004. She relocated from her premises in the Total Fitness Complex to the Grange Road Retail Centre, opposite Marlay Park. Total Hair Care is Ireland’s first salon to offer private areas where clients can have their hair tended to in private rooms.
Audrey’s love of hairstyling and passion for perfection runs in the blood! Among her staff of 12 are Audrey’s son Philip, who runs the Barber Shop and her daughter, Aimee, a Master Colourist, working with the ALFAPARF Milano range of luxury products. So, if you are looking for a little pampering from Indian Head Massage to Highlights; Hair Extensions to Beauty Treatments – why not pay Audrey and her team a visit? Final word to Audrey “I’m certain that our clients will love the new salon and enjoy the standards of luxury we are trying to deliver. The luxury is for them and they deserve it.”
“We were approached by ladies from the Muslim community who wanted to avail of our services but for religious/cultural reasons were uncomfortable removing their headscarves in a public. They asked us whether we would consider facilitating them by allocating a private area. The new salon now provides a completely private room for anyone wishing privacy for the full range of services provided at Total Hair Care”, explained Audrey. The salon also offers a separate Barber Shop, Full Hairdressing Salon, Beauty Rooms and Private Rooms (by appointment) for clients who wish to have total privacy.

We know we should exercise but how much does it really matter? The short term benefits of regular exercise include a healthier heart, healthy muscles, bones and joints, and more energy. Regular activity over the long term reduces your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. If you only exercise to lose weight by the way, you are unlikely to stick at the regime. If you take a 30 minute walk and reward yourself with tea and biscuits upon your return you will be eating more calories than the exercise used up. So focus on exercise for overall health improvement and think of weight loss as just one of the potential benefits. Regular eye health checks are important, particularly for children and older people. For adults many eye diseases are picked up during routine eye examinations and the earlier your optometrist catches problems, the easier they are to treat. ABOUT LOCAL GROUPS
‘The Age of Stupid’ by Fiona Murdoch Rathfarnham Parish Eco Group invited members of the local community to a screening of The Age of Stupid film, the new cinema documentary from the director of McLibel and the producer of the Oscarwinning One Day in September. In The Age of Stupid Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in a devastated future world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: Why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?
following the film in which a wide range of issues around climate change were discussed. People were also invited to take part in an eco quiz and were given a list of eco tips, action ideas and recommended eco books to take home. Rathfarnham Parish Eco Group was started a year ago by a group of parishioners concerned about environmental issues.
Members of Rathfarnham Parish Eco Group pictured after the showing of The Age of Stupid film with Sylvia Thompson of The Irish Times (6th from right), Councillor Emma Coburn (3rd from left), Catherine Brennan SSL (fifth from left) chairperson of Eco Congregation Ireland, and Rev Ted Woods, rector of Rathfarnham Parish.
Introducing The Age of Stupid, which was held in Rathfarnham Parish Centre, Sylvia Thompson of The Irish Times, said that the film told the story of “planetary neglect”. It had inspired a movement of people to take action against climate change and its director, Fanny Armstrong, had become known throughout the world. She was behind the international 10:10 movement, which challenges people, churches, businesses and organisations to cut their carbon emissions by 10 per cent by the end of 2010. In the thought-provoking film, the character played by Pete Postlethwaite, ponders, “We could have saved ourselves, but we didn’t. What state of mind were we in to face extinction and simply shrug it off? … Is the answer, on some level, that we weren’t sure if we were worth saving?” The film, described by The Guardian as "the first successful dramatisation of climate change to hit the big screen" presents a bleak view of the future if nothing is done to prevent runaway climate change. Ms Thompson chaired a lively question-answer session 30 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM
They include an eco tip in the monthly parish magazine and last summer they held a Walk/Cycle to Church Sunday when the two people who walked /cycled the furthest to church won a prize of a trip to Oxfam with their own personal shopper! In December 2008 and 2009 the group took part in the Stop Climate Chaos annual bell-ringing event to raise awareness about climate change. The Group is an initiative of Eco Congregation Ireland, an inter-denominational project that encourages churches and communities to pursue eco-friendly lifestyles. People from throughout Ireland attended an ecumenical service for the UN climate summit held in Christ Church Cathedral in December, which was organised by Eco Congregation Ireland, Trocaire and Christian Aid. The speaker was Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. She said faith-based communities were a critically important part of tackling the problem of climate change. For further info see www.ecocongregationireland.org or call Fiona on 086 1706923.

ABOUT SELLING
Selling Online at eBay by Jennifer Greene It’s January, so you may be short on cash or looking to offload some unwanted gifts. So, how about selling them on eBay? Here’s a few tips to help you to maximise your sale. • Include a photo. More than any other single factor, the photo that you include with your auction will determine the final value for which your item is sold. Take the photo yourself against a white background. • Use HTML to make your listing clean and readable. Bidders will bid if and only if they can figure out what you're saying. Make your auction listing readable and user friendly so that you don't chase bidders away. • Start auction format listings at €1.00 unless you have a reason not to. For most common types of items you'll receive more bids in the end if you begin your listing at €1.00, and you'll ultimately save on listing fees as well.
nobody is likely to be watching will miss out on critical last-day and last-hour bids that can mean the difference between a huge sale and a huge disappointment. • Be flexible about payment to encourage bids. If you want to really maximise the number of bids you receive, be flexible about payment: by accepting payment from PayPal, by personal cheque, by money order, etc you'll ensure that the greatest number of bidders has a chance to bid on your item. • Pack carefully and ship quickly after payment. You've gone to all the trouble to make a sale, so don't lose the race in the last mile by packing your item so poorly that it's damaged in shipment or waiting after receiving payment before you ship. Buyers that have a great buying experience will leave you positive feedback and buy from you again. Buyers that have a poor buying experience will leave negative feedback, will never buy from you again, and may also complain to eBay or to your bank or the postal authorities.
• Clearly list the items included in the sale. If you're selling a product that includes additional accessories or material when sold at retail, be sure to mention in your listing that these are included using phrases like "Includes all original accessories!" If item(s) that buyers might expect to be included actually won't be included in the sale, be sure to mention that as well. • Clearly state the item's condition. Do use ratings such as "like new," or "good condition”. Be sure to include actual details like "has a scratch at the upperright of the screen," "is missing two buttons," etc. • Include shipping details. Do include very specific shipping costs(or an actual shipping cost calculator of some kind), also include details about the areas to which you're willing to ship and whether or not you plan to insure the item. • Provide a clear guarantee, warranty, and/or return/exchange policy. Let your bidders know just what they're getting themselves into by bidding. If your sale is to be considered AS-IS, then state that there will be no returns, refunds, or exchanges. • Time your listing carefully so that it doesn't end in dead zone. Listings that are scheduled to finish when 36 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ARIES
LIBRA
Happy new year Aries, remembering that new is not necessarily the way to go. Rather to use the re-invent word and create the changes which can make you master of your own destiny. Love and commitment is on the agenda for some, others may wish to explore a little while longer. Don’t leave love on the back burner too long lest you should be the loser.
Whether you are married or not, this is the year you make wedding vows and is the happiest you have been for the longest time. Going up to Edinburgh for a weekend is the making of you both. A planned visit to Rome is on the cards and has a hint of familiarity which can only be ascribed to past life connections. A gift of pink roses is the sign of love to you.
TAURUS
SCORPIO
If it is vegetarianism, or simply a complete overhaul in the food department you are, from this month onwards, determined to ring the changes where a more healthy and balanced diet are concerned. Thus, the new and more exuberant you is on a mission...to make the most of everything life has got to give and love? Yes! this year you will say a big yes to a marriage proposal.
Backing away from what makes you uncomfortable is the best way to go at the minute. Cards advise that you sleep on making an important decision before making commitments. You may find yourself called upon to forgive and let the past take care of itself. You can truly move on and allow happiness take its place in your life. A welcome windfall is better shared.
GEMINI
SAGITTARIUS
This has got to be the year where you throw caution to the wind and go for what makes you feel warm, content and blissfully happy. Lots of travel, beginning in January sees you having to keep the suitcase ready at all times. Love is there for you but you may demand a little too much, forgetting that we all have failings. Budget now so you may enjoy later.
Wish upon a star Sagittarius as this is truly your year to accept all the good things the universe has to give. The angels and saints are working with you and assisting your efforts, especially the unselfish goals. Yes! You are still loved and minded from the special one who has passed over to the other side. Don’t give up on the house project as the answer is in front of you.
CANCER
CAPRICORN
Although you may have spent years being a sensitive soul, you are making a new year rule to become a true soldier of righteousness. Opening the book on spiritual awareness is the best awakening you ever had. You are now learning how to be the spiritual healer you were born to be. Yes! Your soul mate will adapt to your way of thinking and eventually work with you.
Multiple facets of family news has the power to confuse, yet enhance you this January. Better prepare the budget as the cupid files are open. Your own love life, to mention but one, is one of many success stories you are lucky to be a part of this year. Travel, is fiercely forecast in this spread, Greece being the highlight. Baby news enthrals, as is an option to begin your own business.
LEO
AQUARIUS
Your dreams are becoming more and more prophetic as the year goes on. There is a reason for this. You are on a soul searching path and are want to envelop truth and wisdom. All this and why? You cam only find true happiness and contentment when you are in harmony with the universe of truth and unconditional love. Your past life as an Indian has a profound effect on you.
Going to a wedding is the making of another. This January sees you filled with hope and love. Do not allow petty frustrations get to you. The advice given to you from a spiritual individual is the best you can get. An old house needing a lot of t.l.c. is the one for you. The banker is favourable to you provided your papers are up to scratch. Get copies of everything.
VIRGO
PISCES
If you find yourself tossing and turning when it comes to making important decisions, accept where you are at now. You are not yet ready to commit to a partnership until the nitty gritty is fully understood and sorted. This is your year for love and the chain of events set in motion by the universal powers now, is the forerunner to the ultimate goal.
The lovers card indicates that you will complete the said projects going on at the minute. A man from across the sea has a powerful say in your future. This may well link to a future work area, perhaps to do with your creative talents? Love and settlement are well featured in this spread and as this means so much to you, need to ready yourself to accepting this gift from the universe.
