by Jennifer Greene Barbara Brown is a qualified Reflexology therapist from Ballycullen. She has been a qualified Reflexologist for 2 years, following training by The Healing House and holds an ITEC Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology and Reflexology.

So, where did the interest in reflexology start?

“I have always had a keen interest in alternative medicine and I have seen its benefits first hand. My mum was my tutor on the Reflexology course, as she has been a teacher and practitioner for the last 16 years.

I continue to learn and recently qualified in Holistic Massage,” Barbara explained.

Many people may think 'my feet look horrible and will be commented upon' - Is this true?

No. Before starting a treatment, a reflexologist will examine your feet. If they feel you may need treatment from a chiropodist or doctor for a foot condition eg verrucas or corns, they will tell you. Other than that they are there to do a job and aren't judging your feet, or indeed you. Your feet have their own shape and structure, and are nothing to be ashamed of!

Sum up reflexology in a sentence Reflexology is the technique of applying gentle pressure to reflex points on the feet and hands to bring about a state of deep relaxation, stimulate the body’s own healing process and help a person return to a state of balance and well-being (homeostasis).

I asked Barbara to dispel a few of the myths and answer a few questions many potential clients may have about Reflexology.

Who can have reflexology?

From newborn babies to the very elderly. Your age and state of health are taken into consideration by the therapist, when planning the nature and duration of your treatment. Then the pressure he/she uses will be adjusted to meet your individual needs.

Reflexology is torture if you are ticklish - Is this true?

No! As soon as you relax you’ll find that the firm, sure touch used by the therapist doesn't tickle. I have never lost a client because they found the treatment ticklish, even those who were bracing themselves for an ordeal have been very pleasantly surprised.

What does reflexology actually do for you?

Reflexology is a holistic treatment, since the whole person is treated instead of singling out a symptom. A reflexology treatment works through each organ, gland and body system. It has many benefits including relaxation, pain and stress relief, improved circulation and digestion, stimulation of the immune and nervous systems and balance for the mind, body and spirit.

Spiced Rhubarb Cake & Borscht (Beetroot Soup) SPICED RHUBARB CAKE

Clean the beetroot, top and tail, being careful not to cut too far into the flesh. Do not peel. Simmer whole in unsalted water until tender (from 30 - 50 mins, depending on size). Drain, cool and remove the skin by rubbing.

Chop or grate the cooked beetroot into a large saucepan.

Add the stock, carrots, onions and celery. Bring to the boil and add the peppercorns, lemon zest, salt and bouquet garni. Cover and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, then add salt to taste. Strain the resulting broth through a fine sieve into a serving bowl, squeeze the pulp gently to get all the liquid, then stir in the lemon juice.

Rhubarb is just coming into season now so make the most of the early crop with this delicious and moist rhubarb cake.

To serve, put the cream or yoghurt into the centre of the bowl, pour in the soup and give it a couple of swirls.

Sprinkle a little chopped parsley on top.

1.5lb / 600g Fresh Rhubarb 4oz / 100g Butter 3oz / 75g Sugar plus extra for sprinkling 2 eggs 4oz / 100g Self Raising Flour 1 tsp Mixed Spice 0.5-1 tsp Ground Ginger For the topping: 3oz / 75g Butter 4oz / 100g Flour 2oz / 50g Demerara Sugar Rinse and chop the rhubarb into 1in / 2cm chunks. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time beating well to avoid curdling. Fold in the flour and the spices. Spoon the mixture into a greased and lined 8in / 20cm cake tin. Level out the mixture and cover with the prepared rhubarb and sprinkle with sugar.

Make the topping by rubbing the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs and stirring in the sugar. Spoon over the rhubarb. Bake for 45 - 50 mins at 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4 until firm and springy to the touch.

BORSCHT (BEETROOT SOUP) 1 litres Beef Stock 900g Beetroot 450g Onion, grated 225g Carrots, peeled & grated 2 Large sticks of Celery, chopped 1 Bouquet Garni Salt and Pepper 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice.

1 tsp Lemon Zest 4 - 6 Black Peppercorns Garnish: Soured cream, yogurt or crème fraîche, about 1tbsp per person. Finely chopped parsley 10 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

Cooking up a Storm for Sam

by Sandra McKenna Sam McMahon was born on 16th February, 2001 at The National Maternity Hospital in Dublin. He arrived 12 days early and barely tipped the scales at 5 pounds. He lives in Knocklyon with his Mum (Caroline), Dad (Brian) and older brother Ben.

Determined to raise the standards of home cooking, Neven Maguire will demonstrate how to transfer his expertise from the restaurant to the domestic kitchen, offering expert advice to both the novice and experienced cook.

On 14th November, 2008 he was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA). Although there were many small hints that there was something different about Sam, it took many years of doctors’ visits and tests to establish that he has FA.

Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder.

Onset of symptoms can vary from childhood to adulthood and can include loss of coordination (ataxia) in the arms and legs; energy deprivation and muscle loss; vision impairment, hearing loss, slurred speech; aggressive scoliosis (curvature of the spine); diabetes mellitus; and a serious heart condition.

Sam is bright, out-going and fun to be with. He loves reading, playing PS3 and watching TV. He likes to swim and wants to learn to play the drums. His favourite colour is red.

While the mental capabilities of people with FA remain completely intact, the progressive loss of coordination and muscle strength caused by FA leads to motor incapacitation and the full-time use of a wheelchair.

There is currently no treatment or cure for it.

The Sam McMahon Trust and Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance Charity are to benefit from a cookery demonstration by award-winning chef and restaurateur Neven Maguire in the D4 Berkeley Hotel on 8th March 2010.

Following a drinks reception at 7pm, Neven will demonstrate how to cook some great recipes taken from his new culinary guide and cookbook, “Home Chef”, at 8pm.

Round the Garden: Marching On!

by Tom Percy Prepare March is the first month when the lawn starts demanding attention. Feed the areas where the grass is thin, or re-seed if the grass has been worn away. If the soil is inhibiting growth, or the grass is discoloured, then it is best to replace that section.

Remove over wintered greens and set out new asparagus beds. Mint beds should be renewed by lifting and replanting.

To prevent the mint spreading round the garden it is advisable to plant in below ground containers.

Give long lasting feed to established plants and trees. Scatter three or four handfuls of blood, fish and bone in a circle around the base of fruit trees, then gently trowel in.

Raspberries, currants, blackberries and gooseberries could also use a sprinkling of gently dug in blood, fish and bone.

Now is the time to graft onto stock, apples, cherries, pears and plums the scions that were cut four weeks earlier.

Prune Tidy up any creepers that need pruning and be ruthless with old and leggy growth. Box, holly, laurel, bay, rhododendrons and conifers can be moved or trimmed. Replace any damaged plants.

Cuttings can be taken of aburilons, acacias, carnations, single flowering late chrysanthemums, fuchsias, gardenias, geraniums and petunias.

Plant Carnations, chrysanthemums, dahlias, pansies, violas, roses and ranunculus can all be safely planted this month. If you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it last month, now is the time to propagate rock plants by division. Any rooted cuttings of fuchsias, heliotropes, marguerites and pelargonium can be potted on now.

Spring Clean Your Thinking!

by Janice Coyne, Style Consultant Isn’t it good to see the stretch in the day and realise that spring really is around the corner?

At this time of year we often think about a spring clean: the house, the garden, the wardrobe, etc. But, how about a spring clean of our thinking?

How challenging would it be to re-think how we felt about ourselves - especially our bodies when we look in the mirror?

Imagine that when you get up and have that first bleary-eyed look at yourself in the morning you were pleased with what you saw? This is not a pipe dream or wishful thinking. We are all too ready to be self critical. How much better would it be to be self praising – or at the very least selfaccepting?

what are the best clothes for our body shape, colour and lifestyle.

Everyone has positive and attractive features and we could all benefit from focussing on those for a while, making an effort to ignore the inner critic and working at enhancing those attributes that others might wish were theirs. Take a little time out this season to re-think yourself into a positive frame of mind ladies, and remember that the wardrobe spring clean can also be part or this year’s therapy to a new you.

Studies have shown that there is a direct link between our appearance and our self esteem.

When we are feeling down or low about ourselves we are most likely to dress in dark colours and not to make an effort with our hair and makeup. What’s more, our body language will send a very clear “I’m unhappy” message to anyone around even if we don’t shuffle about with hands in pockets looking at the ground!

If, on the other hand, at the start of a ‘feeling low” day we took the time to do both hair and face and wore the clothes we knew worked the positive effect on ourselves when we looked in the mirror would begin to change our mood.

Spring into Action!

by Kevin Mills, Chem Dry Express Yes, it is that time again - Spring Cleaning! As the weather gets milder, flinging open the windows to the fresh air and attacking the house is something which many find very therapeutic! To help make things easier we’ve got some great tips from a local professional – Kevin Mills at Chem-Dry Express.

“With anything you must prepare in the right way. You want to get the job done fast but not cut corners. You want to use safe products but they have to be effective.

Most importantly you don’t want to take on a job that is meant for a professional, as you’re only wasting your time and energy!

The good news is I have enough tips for you to get through everything and have your house like new again!

1. Planning Don’t take on more than one task at a time. This will enable you to work efficiently and effectively. When items are found that belong in another area, place them in a basket and take the time later to return each item to its rightful place.

2. Clutter This is a great time to simplify and de-clutter your home. Recycle old books, magazines and clothes which you no longer wear. Replace with candles and flowers.

3. Fridges Springtime brings a change in diet, so this is a great opportunity to clean the refrigerator. Use a chemical free combination of salt and soda water. The bubbling action of the soda water combined with the abrasive texture of the salt works great as a cleaner.

There may be a build up of limescale around your taps. The best way to get rid of it is to lay paper towels over the fixture and soak it with vinegar, letting it set for one hour. The deposits will soften and become easier to remove. The same applies for shower heads in hard water areas. In the bathroom, pop any mildewed or scummy plastic shower curtains into the washing machine on a warm wash - say 40°C. Don't spin - remove and hang back up straight away so that the creases fall away!

Use old toothbrushes to clean awkward nooks and crannies - like plug-holes and drains. If you find that the bottom of your shower tray or shower doors have watermarks which are difficult to remove - get a nylon scouring pad and water, it works wonders! Want an eco friendly way of removing stains from the toilet? Just pour some cola down, flat or fizzy, it works a treat (honest!)

If the grouting around your tiles is looking mouldy, you can get it professionally cleaned – which will save you money and make your tiling look like new!

5. Carpets & Upholstery (We can help here too!)

Invest in a good vacuum cleaner! Vacuum your carpet twice a week. This will help keep dirt from settling to the bottom of the carpet. If you have pets, try to vacuum three times a week especially in the areas where your pet lies on the carpet.

For fresh stains, carbonated water works well. Just pour a generous amount to the soiled area and gently blot the area with a typical white towel. Avoid cheap carpet cleaning products, they leave behind a soapy residue and the carpets will get worse over time!

1. Upwards of 350 Million Users Worldwide If it was a country, Facebook would be the 3rd largest in the world, amazing isn’t it? Yes, they recently announced that they now have in excess of 350 million users worldwide.

2. Average Facebook User Spends 55 Minutes per Day on the Site That’s a lot of time online, and shouldn’t your business be looking at ways to grab a little of that time?

3. Average Facebook User Has 130 Friends Facebook at the moment generally revolves around relationships with people you “actually” know. But Facebook may in time make the leap to tie people together more casually (like Twitter), in which case the average number of “friends” on Facebook could rise dramatically.

4. Average Facebook User “Fans” 2 Pages per Month The average Facebook user “fans” only 2 new pages per month. So, if you’re going to make growth of your Facebook fan base, a key part of your social media strategy, you must give consumers a reason why they should participate with you. So, if you want to grow your Facebook fan base, move beyond simple Wall posts and add photos, videos, links and other interesting and engaging content.

6. Customised News Feed Facebook’s news feed means that just because someone is your fan does not mean he will see your Wall posts or status updates. Instead, the default news feed is comprised of content that Facebook thinks you’ll like, based on your interactions with content from that author in the past, and interactions by your friends with that content. So test content type regularly, and pay attention to what works best for your brand.

7. Real-time Search Changes the Game Facebook is now making most content available publicly, unless you tell them not to via your privacy settings. This means that a negative status update about your brand might now show up on the first page of Google search results for your company name (at least temporarily). You need to be on top of realtime search. Today.

Bytes & Pieces Printing The majority of documents you send to your printer don't need to be high quality. If you are just printing an email to read off line or to show to someone else for example, printing at the standard setting will use more ink than necessary.

Although you can select the printer options to go to draft just before you print, it's easy to forget about doing this. A more efficient way is to set the default to always print in 'draft' or 'fast' mode, then if you need a high quality select that before printing instead.

Go to Start on the desktop and then select Control Panel and find the option for Printers and other hardware or Printers and Faxes.

When you see the icon for your printer, right click over it and select Properties. Find the fast or draft mode option and then just click the button to close the window.

ABOUT EDUCATION

Highlighting the Work of the South Dublin Adult Learning Centre South Dublin Adult Learning Centre (SDALC) was established over 20 years ago to deliver basic education courses.

Located on the Main Street, Dundrum, SDALC provides services to meet the needs of adult learners through a range of programmes, free of charge, from one-to-one courses to accredited courses.

These courses are run periodically throughout the year.

The SDALC supports adult learners and encourages them to identify their educational needs.

Our classes concentrate on: • • • •

Improving Reading skills Improving Writing and Spelling skills Brushing up on Maths Introduction to I.T. for people with basic education

In addition to FETAC, Junior Certificate courses in English and Maths are also available to students.

Many of our students have also had great success with Leaving Certificate English.

All of our classes are organised to meet local demand. We offer a wide range of classes to assist students to improve their skills and we take into account their special interests. A highlight of the SDALC year, is the publication of the students’ writings.

SDALC provide a professional, confidential, free service to local people aged 18 years and over. We strive to make all of our classes welcoming and learner-centred.

All courses are available on a part time basis during the day or evenings.

One of the programmes we currently offer is the ITABE (Intensive Training in Adult Basic Education).

This course helps students improve their general communication skills, including reading and writing. Revising and improving numeracy and Maths for Life is also available to students, as well as an Introduction to Computer Skills. The ITABE is a 14 week intensive course, which students attend for 6 hours a week. Former students have gone on to take certification courses, such as FETAC. SDALC is part of the County Dublin VEC, so it is approved to deliver courses accredited by FETAC at Levels 2, 3 and 4. The FETAC certification is recognised both nationally and internationally.

Some of the courses accredited by FETAC and delivered by the Centre include Communications, Maths, Computer Literacy and Personal Effectiveness.
