Welcome to the November/December issue of About Rathfarnham Hello everyone and welcome to another jam packed issue of About magazine. In this issue we cover and give advice on several subjects which affect a lot of people we know, whether you are into your late thirties or early forties and trying to have a child we have great piece on a group of clinicians who might be able to help. Maybe you are in the middle of your pregnancy, well we have a great piece on 3D or 4D scans, my wife and I had these done with our 2 and they still can’t believe it’s them inside mummy’s tummy. Kilmacud Music Society have been treading the boards now since 1982 and we profile them in this issue along with local writer Donal Donnelly and his new award winning book. Are you looking to increase your social circle or looking for romance, well check out Dine to Meet, a dating agency that doesn’t charge the earth for no results. We also have our Legal favourite, this time from Miriam Dillon and thank you to her for her very informative important piece this month. Along with our other highlighting on Charity pieces is a very important school in Rathfarnham, Saplings is a school for Autistic children and whose parents are on the relentless quest in raising €14,000 per month to keep their children educated in the way they need, any help you can give is, I’m sure, most appreciated. As these times grip even harder and with “the pain” seemingly only around the corner, I think it is very important to not only support local businesses but to give and donate locally too, we must look after our communities and the people closest to us, well It is Christmas soon after all. If you know of any other Charities or Community groups who would wish to be covered in the next issues please have them contact me on my email which you will find opposite, and if you use any of the advertisers please let them know where you found them. Ahhh, Christmas and my favourite saying “not long now till a bit of puddin’! ”, would love to know where it came from. Anyway it wouldn’t be Christmas without a few Competitions, well in this month’s magazines we have over €1000 of prizes to be won, from Rathfarnham Shopping Centres €500 worth of Vouchers, Tickets to the Mill Theatre, Giddy Studio’s Adult Night out this Saturday, A Child’s Aquarium to our favourite Wordsearch and Crossword Competitions, you never know your luck so have a go….. Saplings School for Children with Autism When Luke Maiden started in Saplings School for Children with Autism aged 5, his language was so delayed that he could barely put three words together. After three years of special education and therapy at Saplings, Luke is a changed boy. “He now talks fluently,” says Luke’s mother, Rowena. “And he’s learnt how to read and write. Not only has Saplings taught him how to communicate, but it’s also given him the coping ability to attend the local national school for his second class every morning. He absolutely loves it and is making friends.” Recently Saplings had to let go of its Speech and Language Therapist because of funding problems.

challenging behaviours – such as tantrumming, aggression and self-injury – which often accompany autism. “Without the early intervention provided by their school,” adds Rowena, “many of the children who attend Saplings would face institutional care from an early age. The school is literally a lifeline for the kids and their families. We can’t afford to not keep it going.” Families of the 24 children who attend Saplings must fundraise at least €14,000 per month to cover basic costs. Saplings School Rathfarnham provides one-to-one education to 24 children on the autism spectrum. It teaches everything from lifeskills – such as toileting and coping with visits to the dentist – to communication skills, reading and writing. Children who are non-verbal are taught to use sign language and to communicate with pictures. Most importantly for the children and their families, Saplings tackles the extremely 6 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ABOUT FERTILITY

Fertility can be child’s play with Achieve Fertility, Dublin’s first integrated fertility clinic by Dave Shipsey B.Sc, Grad Dip, C.Ac, A.Ac, M.A.F.P.A ,M.B.B.A. Fertility problems affect 1 in 6 couples in Ireland. There are a huge number of contributing factors that have led to the overall decrease in fertility. These include pollution, stress, diet, lifestyle and age, to name but a few. As a result of the increased need for choice amongst couples seeking help to conceive naturally or through artificial reproductive techniques (A.R.T.) such as I.V.F. (invitro fertilisation), Achieve Fertility was set up in 2009. It is made up of 7 practitioners from both complimentary and conventional medical backgrounds. Our mission is to provide comprehensive and expert advice on all aspects of fertility, pregnancy and post natal care. Through our affiliation to the Zita West fertility clinics and our special relationship with embryologist Dr. Declan Keane, Achieve Fertility has massive resources and expertise in all areas of fertility, gynaecology and obstetrics. With the increasing pace and demands of modern living, further exposure to various forms of everyday chemical pollutants fertility has decreased. • • •

Male factors account for 40% of fertility problems Female factor accounts for 40% of fertility problems 20% of problems are combined problems or are due to unexplained causes.

Couples marry later and due to financial constraints or career choices decide to start families in their mid thirties. At this time a woman’s chance of conceiving in any month has declined from 20% in her teens and 20’s to 3% in her 40’s. Incidence of miscarriage increases also with age, as does sperm quality. At achieve fertility we use an integrated approach to fertility, we encourage both partners to complete a detailed case history which looks at all relevant aspects of their life. From this information the team will work with the couple to decide on the best course of treatments to help realise the couples dream. Achieve fertility therapies include: A male and female acupuncturist, chiropractor, fertility nurse, hypnotherapist & psychotherapist, nutritional therapist and a reflexologist. Acupuncture has been shown to improve likelihood of IVF succeeding by 64%; it helps balance hormone levels, improves sperm quality and quantity and can regulate menstrual cycle and egg quality. It relieves stress and restores the body’s natural harmony. 8 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

Chiropractic therapy can help to correct any misalignments in the spinal column which may impede nerve transmissions to the vital organs and prevent normal function. Fertility Nurse will advise on any necessary medical tests and the results from such tests. She can also help with decisions on various clinic and options available. Hypnotherapy & counselling; as fertility is 90% subconscious it can address any blockages that may exist due to trauma guilt or fear. Nutritional therapy can help couples to tailor their diet for optimum health and therefore improve the chances of conception. Reflexology; can address any hormonal imbalance and help to regulate the cycle, it can also ease stress and help the body function at its optimum. Achieve fertility offers comprehensive, confidential, compassionate and expert fertility solutions tailored to a couples individual requirements. ABOUT RECIPE

Murgh Makhani (Butter Chicken) Butter chicken or murgh makhani is an Indian dish popular in countries all over the world where Indian restaurants are found. The dish was invented by accident at Moti Mahal Restaurant in Daryaganj, New Delhi. While the dish's general recipe is well known, the actual flavour can vary from restaurant to restaurant even within Delhi. It is a dish made by marinating a chicken overnight in a yoghurt and spice mixture. The chicken is then roasted or baked.

a medium heat. 6. Add the cubed chicken and sauté, stirring constantly until the chicken has turned white. This doesn't take long so make sure you don't overcook the chicken. 7. Pour in the tomato paste. Mix thoroughly. Add the cream and heat through. After adding the cream and stirring, you may add additional tandoori masala. About 3-5 tablespoons full is generally sufficient. 8. Cover and simmer for just over 10 minutes

A sauce is made from butter, tomatoes, almonds and various spices, usually including the famous tandoori masala spice mix and sometimes cream. Once the sauce is prepared, the marinated and roasted chicken is chopped and added to it. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of butter 1 large onion ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon (optional) 2-3 cloves of crushed garlic 2 teaspoons of grated ginger 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric 1 tablespoon of ground coriander 2-3 teaspoons of chilli powder 50g tandoori masala powder 400-500 grams of skinless, boneless chicken thighs or breasts (chicken on the bone, this will probably be 800 g) 100-200g tomato paste 100g full cream 1 small lemon or lime ½ cup of unsweetened yoghurt Method: 1. Trim and cut the chicken into small cubes. (Cooks who prefer chicken on the bone, put long thin slices laterally into the chicken) 2. In a big bowl add Tandoori powder, yogurt and squeeze in lemon juice. Massage this well with your hands so that all the chicken is evenly covered in the Tandoori powder. Cover and put aside for at least an hour. 3. With a clean knife slice the onions very finely. 4. Heat a large saucepan or frying pan for 5 minutes or until evenly hot (whichever is first). 5. In the pan melt 2 tablespoons of butter until it is frothy. Add the onions and the cinnamon to the pan and fry lightly. When the onions are soft and starting to brown, stir in the crushed garlic and ginger. Then add the turmeric, chilli and coriander, and sauté over 10 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

ABOUT MOTORING

Brought to you in association with

The All New Nissan Juke The success of the Nissan Qashqai is welldocumented. It is credited with kick-starting the now highly lucrative crossover segment and Nissan admits that it was a lifeline at a time when several of its top sellers were due to expire. To this day there are long waiting lists for the Qashqai, despite the arrival of several new competitors. Nissan wants to repeat all that, but at a lower price point. Enter the Juke. Nissan Ireland offers three trim levels: XE, SV and Sport. The entry-level Juke is the 1.6 XE petrol model at €18,195. That features 16-inch alloys, CD stereo with aux-in, six airbags, electric windows all-round, ESP stability control and air conditioning. There's a €1,300 jump to SV spec, which includes 17inch alloys, front fog lights, Bluetooth, cruise control, a leather steering wheel with stereo controls, dualzone climate control, a USB port, SV upholstery and body-coloured door mirrors and handles. Top-of-the line Sport models get sportier 17-inch wheels, privacy glass, red interior trim and a bright red centre console. The premium is €500 over the SV. As both the 1.6-litre petrol engine and the 1.5-litre turbodiesel sit in Band B in terms of emissions and taxation, Nissan can offer the former for less. The diesel models attract a €2,000 premium. Four-wheel drive is offered under special order only, while the CVT automatic costs an additional €2,900. 12 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

That all-important commanding driving position is present and correct, so the Juke immediately feels bigger than its rivals. However, on the road it proves quite agile and is keen to corner. The suspension is tauter than in the most comfortable of superminis, but in return there's not too much body roll. It doesn't engage in the same way the MINI and Fiesta do, but first impressions suggest that it's still quite good to drive. The steering and brakes are well-weighted and easy to modulate, though the five-speed manual gearbox in the example we drove seemed a little recalcitrant. Nissan's gearboxes are usually quite slick so we suspect this could be due to the low mileage on the test car. Nissan hit the nail on the head with its Qashqai. We'll shy away from predicting whether or not the same can be done with the supermini segment. We love the unique appeal of the Juke and it's bound to attract a bunch of potential MINI buyers into Nissan showrooms. Our short first drive suggests it's not as fun to drive as some rivals, but it is much more practical. It's on sale now. For all your new car news and reviews check out www.completecar.ie, there you can ask the experts anything from what they think of any particular model to any advice you might need concerning any motoring problems.

ABOUT COMPUTERS

Home PC Security by Stuart Ferguson Web Scams Anne Galligan of Micropro Computers has made About Magazines aware of a serious threat that has cropped up recently and that is of unsolicited phone calls made to people telling them of how they can help speed up their aging home PC by “Online PC Care” or an “Online PC Doctor”. Firstly you are asked if your PC is running a little slow, you will probably say yes and then be told to enter their website as they have the solution. They will then direct you to a link and ask you to download the software sometimes called LogMeIn that will help you, unsurprisingly an error message then appears but that is only a decoy to enforce their premise that there was something wrong in the first place, you are then asked to pay up to €200 to have this virus or error removed and repaired. By now though the program you have installed has given them remote access and opened a portal or back door into your Home PC and they can now access at any time, they have all your details, your email addresses so they can now target them and more importantly they can keep taking the €200 fee as often as they like. By the time you realise that you have been wronged the website that you visited has been taken down and is no more, all you can do is contact the Garda and take it from there and have your PC looked at by a professional. If you have already taken this call you can contact Micropro and they can advise you on what to do next if you have already followed these instructions. Here are some more tips to help with your security: Backup your Files: There are several tools you can use to back up your computer. They vary widely in price, size and ease of use. Some tools, like external hard drives, may provide instructions for how to back up files. In most cases, copying files is as easy as finding the information you want to back up on your computer and copying it onto the media or drive you're using. Use a more sophisticated Password: Your dog’s name or your favourite child ( if you have one) is not enough, try to use a complicated password using letter and numeric in about 8 or so digits, you will be surprised at the more you use it the more you remember it. One trick is to use a phrase like this “My dog has four legs”, so it becomes – mydh4leg5.

14 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

If you need to write down your passwords never store it on a file on your computer, you would be surprised how many people have a word document called Passwords on their Home PC. Public Wireless Hot Spots The most convenient wireless services are free hotspots offered by coffee shops, schools, libraries, etc. but they can carry the greatest risks. Many hotspots are completely open, or protected by a common password. Clever scammers using the network can intercept messages as you send and receive information. If you're connecting to email or e-commerce sites, you may be transmitting passwords that can be snatched out of the ether by a nearby crook. So beware, try to avoid accessing your Paypal account, or online banking in the middle of a busy public café. Email Filters All email accounts will quickly become overloaded with junk, some which will contain dangerous viruses and scams. The good news is that any good email program now contains a lot of options for filtering out the stuff you don't want. Learning how to use those tools properly will make your email experience faster, safer and a lot simpler. Servicing and Upgrading

You wouldn’t let just anyone enter your house unchecked, so don’t let just anyone have access to your home PC. It carries in its circuits a lot about you and you want to keep that private. Use a reputable Servicing Dealer certified by a manufacturer, this is a great indicator that they have reached significant standards to bear the manufacturers servicing logo. By all means if you are recommended someone who home calls for servicing, is a certified training professional or advertises prominently with a landline number, use them, but a photo copied name and mobile number only through my door would not be enough. If you are worried about how to make your online experience more secure there are professionals that we have used and we are sure that if you ask for advice they will give as much information as possible. Bytes & Pieces Free Software! Buying a new PC? Sticking with the old one but recognising the need to upgrade your software? Don’t assume that you have to buy new software licences, especially if your PC is only for home use. There are many tools these days which do the job just as well as the expensive packages but which are available free. Openoffice is a great solution for word processing, spreadsheet and presentations. It will open documents created in other packages e.g. Microsoft Word. (www.openoffice.org.) If you want a good email package, download Mozilla Thunderbird. This is produced by the same team that offer the Firefox web browser (also free) which is generally recognised as far superior to Internet Explorer. (www.mozillamessaging.com/en-GB/thunderbird/) For antivirus software go to AVG. You won’t see them promoting the free edition on the home page of the site, but if you type FREE into the search box on the top right, that’ll take you to the download area. (www.avg.com.)

ABOUT GARDENING

November’s Winter Preparation by Tom Percy General This is a good month for double digging; incorporating manure into the bottom of the trench and deepening the topsoil. If you intend to use the greenhouse through the winter, now is the time for a thorough wash down and clean up prior to insulating with bubble wrap or heat sheets. Use a small amount of detergent when cleaning the glass. Reduce ventilation, but give the greenhouse a good airing on fine days to prevent disease. Be sure to regularly rake and remove leaves and other debris from all beds and your pond. This is a great time to use the garden vacuum mulcher.

can be sown now. Cabbages and leeks can also be planted as they will stand over winter. Fruit November offers an opportunity to plant new raspberry, blackberry and other soft fruit canes. Add compost and feed with 8 oz per square yard (250 grams per square metre) of bonemeal. Apple and pear trees should be pruned and figs need thinning. Trees and Shrubs Flowering shrubs and trees for next year can still be planted, borders thinned and any alterations carried out.

Vegetables As they benefit from a cold spell, plant garlic cloves now. Bear in mind that they don’t like to sit in water, so plant them on top of a one inch bed of sand and fill above with fine compost to ensure good drainage. Dress the asparagus bed with rotten manure and dig in after cutting down remaining growths. Beans, peas, lettuce, mustard and cress and radish seeds

Dine to Meet We make the reservation, the restaurant serves the food . . . .the rest is up to you! We all know somebody who has tried different ways to meet new people whether it is speed dating, blind dates, online dating etc. with mixed results. At Dine to Meet, we have a great insight into what can work for one person may not work for another - the saying that ‘one size fits all’ is not true! From a marketing point of view, we are always reminded to focus on similarities of different services in existence – however in our case we took the feedback of why people were disenchanted with the above services and produced a totally different option! Dinner dates in a small group. One of the major concerns about meeting new people is the safe environment & atmosphere of how and where the meeting takes place. We make the restaurant reservation & arrange one small table (and by small we mean 6 or 8 people in total) with same number of men & women. A generalisation is that men tend to be hesitant to try new options and we want to change this and encourage more

ABOUT EMPLOYMENT

Is Your Employer in Difficulty by Jennifer Greene management assured its employees that everything was OK when the reality was far different and 5,000 people subsequently lost their jobs soon after. 2nd Red Flag: Targets Have your targets suddenly increased? Have you been given extra support to achieve these new targets or has more pressure been added to your workload? This could indicate that the company is ‘on the market’ and, as such, it is trying to increase its sale value. 3rd Red Flag: Check the Stock Market The good news is that Ireland's economy will recover

Advances in technology, the relocation of resources overseas or a downward turn within a given industry can have a detrimental effect on the fortunes of a company. The signals that your employer is headed down the wrong path vary from company to company and it can be difficult to know the true situation. However, there are familiar red flags that consistently show up across the board. Here are the signs that you need to look out for to protect yourself and your career.

4th Red Flag: Look Around the Office Watch out for major changes in company procedures with a focus on saving money. Has business travel or client entertainment been stopped ? Has there been a sudden departure of senior colleagues? 5th Red Flag: Previous Lay-Offs If there have been lay-offs in the past then it is likely there will be more in the future. ABOUT RATHFARNHAM SHOPPING CENTRE

Rathfarnham Shopping Centre Rathfarnham was indeed a village at the foot of the Dublin Mountains when, in 1969 the new Shopping Centre was opened on Butterfield Avenue. Developed by PV Doyle owner of the Doyle Hotel Group the Centre came hot on the heels of Stillorgan Shopping Centre and was the second modern shopping centre to open its doors on the south side of Dublin. Some 42 years later, it remains an integral part of the Rathfarnham scene and continues to provide a wide range of shopping facilities to its loyal customer base. The Centre is a partly enclosed 7,432 sqm gross shopping complex, and is well located in a mature residential area. It is accessible from three sides via adjacent busy streetsButterfield Ave, Springfield Ave and the linking Fairways road. The No 15B and the No 75 bus routes provide regular and reliable public transport links to the Centre. There is an excellent mix of retail outlets and ancillary services at the centre. Over 50% of the lettable space is set in convenience goods and an additional 30% is comparison shopping. With approx 400 car spaces at ground level, and three hours free car parking per visit, the centre is ideal for the weekly shop and the last minute dash for essentials. Along with anchor tenants TESCO and PRIMARK/PENNEYS, one can comfortably do the Christmas shopping for menswear, ladies and children’s wear, footwear, books, Sports apparel and equipment. You can have lunch on the upper floor and visit one of a number of outlets dedicated to the art of pampering with hair, beauty, health treatments and products. There are also a number of facilities located at the centre which give it a real community feel – a crèche, Doctors Surgery and the Servite Oratory and it is very noticeable among shoppers that Rathfarnham Shopping Centre is truly a local neighbourhood centre. ABOUT LEGAL MATTERS

An Enduring Power of Attorney – Providing Peace of Mind by Miriam Dillon, Dillon Solicitors “My Mum cannot remember anything anymore and I have no access to her accounts.”

Miriam Dillon

“My Doctor says Dad has to go into a nursing home but the house may have to be mortgaged – Dad cannot sign the papers.”

“I always had a power of attorney for my Aunt’s accounts – the Bank says I cannot rely on it anymore.” Sound familiar?! These are some of the distressing tales from the families of people who have lost mental capacity. Losing one’s mental capacity means that you cannot make decisions in relation to the normal day to day things that we all take for granted. This can be very upsetting for the people involved and also for the family of the person who loses mental capacity. When this happens what traditionally happens if the family of the person affected will have to bring an application to Court to have the person made a Ward of Court. This means that somebody from the Wards of Courts Office will liaise with the family in relation to any decisions in relation to the effected person’s affairs. This application can take some time, is expensive and very upsetting for all concerned.

There are procedures which require the Attorney to register the document and where two notice parties have to be notified of the making of the application. This is to ensure that the Attorney does not abuse the power given to him/her under the Enduring Power of Attorney. Once the Enduring Power of Attorney is registered the Attorney can then make all decisions on behalf of the effected person such as where he or she should live, the care he or she should have, decisions in relation to the sale of property and other financial matters. The Donor, when making the Enduring Power of Attorney, can decide the extent of the power which the Attorney is to have. At all times medical evidence is required to confirm that the person has the capacity to understand the document in the first place and further medical evidence will be required in the event that the attorney wishes to register the document. There is no doubt that by signing an Enduring Power of Attorney can reduce the stress for the person affected and his or her family in the unfortunate event of somebody losing their mental capacity.

There is an alternative which many people are not aware of. It is called an Enduring Power of Attorney. An Enduring Power of Attorney is a document that is signed by somebody when in a state of full mental capacity (“the Donor”) appointing one or more persons to be their Attorney(s) in the event that at some stage in the future they lose mental capacity. It means that the person appointed as attorney can then step into their shoes and make decisions as if they were the Donor.

ABOUT LOCAL EVENTS

Highlighting - The King of Greystones 2010 The annual King of Greystones charity triathlon couldn’t happen without a team of dedicated helpers who make sure everything runs smoothly. One of these volunteers gives us their perspective on the day…

It seems like an age ago now, but on Saturday August 7, I got up early to make my way to Greystones in my capacity as official volunteer for one of the most worthwhile charity events in the Dublin area, The King of Greystones Triathlon 2010. The brainchild of a small number of incredibly selfless people, The King of Greystones has been running for eight years now, and to my shame, this is the first time I’ve been directly involved. It was raining on my drive to the event, and I have to admit I was less than enthusiastic. However, on arrival, the sun actually managed to peek out and I could feel a tingle of excitement among the 100-strong team of volunteers who were queueing at the registration tent. We were all given details of our jobs for the morning, along with a T-shirt, and a very impressive goodie bag. As a non-competitor, I felt a bit guilty taking this, but that didn’t hold me back and I got stuck into a packet of Tayto, as I had missed brekkie. (I also got a flag! And it’s not often I get a flag so I thought it worthy of a mention.) After that, there was a briefing from the organizers about our duties for the day, and information on the event. This year, the funds raised were going to two charities: The Wicklow Hospice (a non-profit organisation that was set up by the people of Wicklow, to promote the right of every person to choose where they wish to spend their last days) and The Sam McMahon Trust (set up to raise funds for nine-year-old Sam, who was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia in 2008), which also funds the research centre FARA.

wandered down to the beach, to watch the athletes embark on an impressive 750m swim. I realised that although this is also a team event, with each team member taking on one leg of the challenge, many were completing the entire event on their own, which meant that after the 750m swim, they went directly into a 20km cycle, and then a 5km run to finish. Amazing! With the sun shining, I made my way to my post for the morning. I was near the end of the event, guiding the runners, so it was a while before I saw anybody, but as they began to go by, I was once again struck by the sheer passion of the people taking part. Indeed, there were over 300 participants, some young, some old, some fitness fanatics and some less so, and some with disabilities. I was also a little star struck, when I spied ex-Irish Rugby International Shane Byrne jog by. I managed to keep my composure, just, while at all times cheering and flag waving as athletes passed by looking tired and wishing for the finishing line. The morning flew by, and soon I was back at base enjoying the post-event atmosphere, and the barbecue that was accompanied by much-appreciated sunshine. In no time, Shane Byrne re-appeared, this time to announce the winners, and there was a hearty cheer for them all. But the rain was back again, and so after some last-minute clearing up, I made my way back home. It might seem a bit odd for me to thank the organisers, as I was merely a volunteer, but they deserve a huge thanks nonetheless, particularly when you consider the huge amount they’ve raised for charities over the years. Thanks are also due to the many sponsors of the event, including Newcastle Mazda and MenuPages.ie, along with all the local businesses and countless other companies who supported the event and who gave things for free for the barbecue and the goodie bags (thanks Tayto!). This is definitely one to note down in your 2011 diary.

Once the briefing was over, I had a few minutes to spare, so I

ABOUT KILMACUD MUSIC SOCIETY

Kilmacud has Talent Kilmacud Musical and Dramatic Society (KMDS) first tread the boards in 1982 with the play Big Maggie. Their first musical, Fiddler on the Roof was staged in 1984. Since then they have performed many more musicals, most of them very well known and loved such as Showboat, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Oklahoma and Anything Goes.

To celebrate their 21st birthday in 2003, KMDS decided to do something a bit special and performed The Magic of the Musicals, a compilation of songs from the shows, such as Oklahoma, Les Miserables, Chicago and Blood Brothers, to name but a few. In May of that year, KMDS staged two more performances of the Magic of the Musicals but this time for charity. In 2006 KMDS staged The Boyfriend - a jazzy, romantic spoof on the musical comedies of the 1920's. It was set in a fashionable finishing school on the sun-kissed French Riviera, where young ladies were schooled in the finer art of 'marrying well.

They have also staged some of the less well known but equally engaging musicals such as Carrie in 1995 written by Wesley Burrows of Glenroe fame. Carrie is set in Dublin around a window cleaner, a maid and an American actress. In 1998 they staged The Hired Man, the story of Melvyn Bragg's paternal grandparents set around the mines and lands of Cumbria. This was a show much loved by the cast and audience alike, and it won the society an AIMS (Association of Irish Musical Societies) nomination for their choral singing. In 1999 they staged the Irish premiere of Meet Me in St Louis, the Judy Garland favourite. 2001 the society had a very successful show. With their production of Guys & Dolls came two AIMS (Association of Irish Musical Societies) nominations. Tahlia Marvin for her portrayal of Sarah Browne and Marijka Walsh with her portrayal of Adelaide, the long suffering fiancee for which she won Best Comedienne.

32 | ABOUT RATHFARNHAM

To celebrate the 25th anniversary in 2007, KMDS performed the Lionel Bart classic Oliver. This show was a huge success with all performances sold out the week before the show opened!! Last year we staged The Best of Broadway and again a great success. The society performed songs from Broadway Smash Hits such as Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, Joseph, Hello Dolly and Les Miserables to name a few. Kilmacud Musical & Dramatic Society have had many years of music, fun, friendship and entertainment which we hope will continue for the next 30 years...

Dog Grooming Tips Here are some reasons from Sinead’s Dog Spa for getting your dog groomed professionally. 1. Regular grooming encourages healthier skin and coat and best of all it makes your dog feel and look better. 2. A groomer who sees your dog regularly gets to know the feel of their body and can often identify lumps and bumps which could benefit from early inspection by your vet. 3. Regular grooming ensures a dog is well used to being handled and provides for a happier animal. 4. Regular removal of hair from the ear canal helps to reduce the risk of inflammation and possible infection. 5. Matted hair pulls and tugs at the skin and causes discomfort for your pet. 6. Overgrown nails make walking uncomfortable for your dog. 7. Clearing the hair around your dog’s privates can help with basic hygiene while at the same time reduce odours.
