EMBARKING ON A NEW ADVENTURE La Jolla’s favorite neighborhood pet shop, Decker’s Dog + Cat, is happy to announce that they’re opening a second shop in Bay Park (next to Sprouts) late this spring. Offering a similar selection of items as the La Jolla store, the new shop is a little larger, meaning even more collars, leashes, harnesses, nutritious pet food brands, and toys. We’re obsessed with the sourdough bread they make at Ranch 45. Sourdough bread is slow-fermented using a starter instead of yeast to make it rise. According to Ranch 45’s General Manager, Pam Schwartz, this starter dates back about 100 years. The crispy, almost crackly, crust yields to a soft, slightly chewy center with that characteristic tangy flavor of sourdough bread. Baked fresh on the premises, the restaurant uses it for sandwiches, toast, and to complement its hearty dishes. Best yet, you can buy a whole loaf and take it home. Watch for more goodies from Ranch 45 soon, as they add a butcher shop and gourmet market.
THE NEW PLACE TO BE Raising the bar for shampoo Aveda is dedicated to caring for the world we live in while taking beautiful care of our hair. It gently cleanses and provides weightless long-lasting nourishment, and it has this fragrant, calmingblend of 25 pure flower and plant essences.” The bar form is package-free, concentrated, and perfect for travel! IF THE SHOE DOESN’T FIT, RETURN IT! If you’ve been doing more running, hiking, or walking lately— slow down a sec and ask yourself: Do my toes ever tingle or get numb? Any black toenails? So moved, she decided to move her shop from Little Italy to La Jolla! “Liverpool Los Angeles is a total wardrobe solution designed for the La Jolla lifestyle,” Lisa says. “On trend, superior fitting clothes at an exceptional value. HOW TO HOST A HUMMINGBIRD BY WENDY VAN DIVER
Anna's Hummingbird
18
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
What isn’t there to love about hummingbirds? Weighing in at less than an ounce, they drum the air with their wings from 20 to 200 times per second, producing the distinct humming sound that inspired their name. Tiny and gregarious, hummingbirds pop into our garden as welcome guests—and we hope they will never leave. San Diego is home to five hummingbird (hummer) species, with the most common being the Anna’s Hummingbird, which resides here all year long. Yet, there is nothing common about this bird who brightens our yards with its iridescent green feathers and rose-pink throat. Four additional hummingbird species (Black-chinned, Costa’s, Allen’s, and Rufous) migrate to our region each spring and stay until fall.
Black-chinned Hummingbird
Hibiscus
Rufous Hummingbird
In the garden, hummingbirds are perfect guests. They're so quiet, self-reliant, and entertaining, there is little a host needs to do to make hummers happy. But we’ve found a few ways for you to try.
SHUTTERSTOCK.COM
Hummingbirds have one of the highest metabolic rates relative to body size of any animal on earth. They require about half of their body weight in sugar daily. Hummers use their sense of sight, not smell, to find nectar. They are drawn to flowering plants with rich, brilliant colors—particularly red—a color not detected by most insects; long, Pink Autumn Sage
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
19
Jacaranda tree
Although nectar provides hummers the quick energy they need to sustain their extremely high metabolic rate, they also require protein in the form of insects. If you’ve ever seen a hummingbird sit high on a twig and then suddenly swoop and hover at what seems to be a random spot in the air, you’ve witnessed “hawking,” the term used for a hummer catching insects in mid-air. Hummingbirds use their exceptionally acute vision to find gnats that are invisible to us. They also glean them and other insects from spider webs and flowers. Spiders, the hummer's favorite insect food source, compose an estimated 60 to 80 percent of its diet. Since hummers need to feed almost continuously, it is not overdoing it to provide a hummingbird feeder or two in your garden. The feeder, made of glass or plastic, should be easy to take apart. Avoid feeders with yellow bee guards because—ironically—the color yellow attracts bees. Plan to change the feeder frequently (every week in cooler weather to every few days in summer) to prevent bacteria and mold growth. Each time you change the feeder, scrub every crevice with a bottlebrush and mild vinegar and rinse it thoroughly.
Allen’s Hummingbird
Hummingbirds use soft plant fibers and spider silk to bind their tiny nests and attach them to the branches of sheltered trees and large shrubs. If you want to invite them to nest in your garden, plant hummingbirdfriendly trees and shrubs such as Jacaranda, Toyon, and California Fuchsia.
DIY NECTAR The recipe is simple! Combine one-quarter cup of sugar per one cup of water in a saucepan. Bring to a full boil on the stove for two minutes. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature before pouring it into the feeder. Note: Don’t use honey, red food color, or red-colored commercial mixes. Real nectar is clear and the nectar you make should be too!
20
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
If you discover a nest, steer clear. It is good to know that hummingbirds usually lay two eggs the size of jellybeans, which are not always laid at the same time. Incubation, which does not begin until the second egg has been laid, lasts between 16 and 18 days. It is estimated that a mother hummingbird, who raises her babies alone, leaves the nest up to 200 times a day to gather food. You will want to give the new family space for a few weeks, until the babies depart the nest for good. Perhaps the only time a hummingbird gets picky is at bath time. Although hummers love to splash about, they prefer shallow moving water. Sprinklers and fountains suit them best, so purchase a floating solar-powered fountain for your bird bath. You’ll discover that hummingbirds love to groom themselves and frequently preen to keep their beautiful feathers fluffy and clean. ✲

THE FRESHEST CEVICHE EVER How one local chef has found a new, delicious niche in challenging times PHOTOS BY JUSTICE PHOTOGRAPHY
In a word, Joshua Shapiro is enterprising. He has always been up to something, whether it’s as a chef working in fine-dining kitchens, managing hotel sustainability programs, or as a private chef. Most recently, Josh was the general manager at Liberty Public Market in Liberty Station, overseeing operations and advising and assisting more than 30 independent, local businesses. He was also building a catering company as a side project, until everything came to a halt and the coronavirus pandemic forced the closure of businesses and the cancellation of all kinds of events and gatherings. “I wanted to be proactive and stay safe and legal, so we pivoted. We created Reel Street Eats to take three of our favorite restaurant-quality ceviche recipes out onto the streets and to the people at local farmers’ markets,” Josh says. Reel Street Eats’ ceviche dishes are fresh, flavorful and they sell out fast. The fish is top quality, sourced from local fishermen. There are three ceviche dishes (two raw, one cooked) featuring fish caught off the San Diego coast, bought directly from the fishermen, and served as quickly as humanly possible. “On the boat yesterday and on the plate today,” as Josh puts it. The vegetables, juices—all the ingredients—are fresh, and every order is prepared in full view of the eager customer. A bell is rung each time another lucky guest is served.
WHERE TO FIND REEL STREET EATS Mainstreet Oceanside Farmers’ Market Corner of Pier View Way & North Coast Hwy Thursdays 9 am to 2 pm North Park Thursday Market 30th & North Park Way Thursdays 3 pm to 6:30 pm Vista Farmers’ Market 325 S Melrose Dr Saturdays 8 am to 12 pm
“My team and I like to talk to our guests about how we source our fish and other ingredients,” Josh explains. “So many communities have been impacted this past year, and local restaurants, farms, and fishermen are among the hardest hit. I wanted to get back to my culinary roots, serving great food that is honest, accessible, well handled, and packed with flavor. I’m glad I’ve found a way to be part of my community and local food system during these challenging times.”
La Jolla Open Aire Market 7335 Girard Ave Sundays 9 am to 1 pm
The response to Reel Street Eats has been overwhelmingly positive and they sell out at the farmers’ markets on most days. “We sell out because our ceviche is that good, plus it’s a necessary part of serving the freshest local fish,” Josh says. “When you buy our ceviche, nothing is left over from yesterday’s market. The food was sourced, prepped, and served just for you. It’s a difference you can taste, and it’s a big part of what makes this San Diego’s best ceviche!” This spring, in addition to the farmers’ markets, Reel Street Eats is planning some pop-up partnerships with local breweries and spring festivals. They’re also rolling out a preorder function on their website, so keep watching reelstreeteats.com for details and follow @reelstreeteats on Instagram. ✲

Salmon fishermen from the world over recognize Vancouver’s Campbell River as the salmon capital of the world. This succulent salmon lives up to its reputation, but what really blows us away about this dish is the way the slightly bitter taste and crunchy texture of the sauteed Chino Farms Chinese broccoli elevates the flavor of the fish. A drizzle of ginger soy beurre blanc provides the perfect finishing touch.
A complete protein and gluten-free, quinoa is the kind of food we feel good about eating. This nutritious bowl emphasizes the color green with fresh spinach, basil-based pesto sauce, and a garnish of sliced avocado. Dig in and you’ll discover chunks of feta and other veggies, too. The specific greens and veggies vary, but they’re always the freshest available.

Americana Restaurant Green Eggs and Ham
Here’s proof that Sam-I-Am was right. This dense scramble of eggs, spinach, mozzarella, parmesan, fresh tomatoes, and fresh house-made pesto deserves to be tried in a box, with a fox, anywhere! But it’s easier to enjoy this dish that pays homage to the great Dr. Seuss at the restaurant. Served with a mixed salad of fresh greens and balsamic dressing.
Pomodoro Artichokes
Although it’s commonly thought of as a vegetable with its vivid green leaves and stalks, the artichoke is actually the flower of a thistle plant. People have been enjoying eating it since ancient times but never quite as much as we do at Pomodoro. Served as antipasti, these giant, tender artichoke hearts are roasted slowly with onions, then sauteed with extra virgin olive oil and garlic. Crusty bread soaks up all the goodness.

Osteria Romantica
Pizza Barese owes its special flavor to smoked Buffalo mozzarella and nutty gorgonzola cheese. It’s topped with a tender Barese sausage and broccoli rabe—which looks like it’s related to broccoli but tastes more like a mustard green. Here, broccoli rabe provides just the right amount of bitterness to cut through the rich cheese flavors and buttery crust. This is a delicious and beautifully balanced pizza.
This classic dish featuring short-grain Italian Arborio rice in fresh pesto with grilled prawns is so popular, it appears on the restaurant’s specials list once or twice a week. We think it’s because they blend the perfect amount of pungent pesto—made in-house with fresh basil, garlic, lemon, pine nuts, and olive oil—into the tender risotto. ✲

The Splendors of
Sedona BY TERESA K. TRAVERSE
Absorbing the aura of Capitol Butte, one of Sedona’s most notable red rock formations 34
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
EXPANSIVE BLUE SKIES, striking red rocks, and near-perfect weather make Sedona, Arizona, a captivating place. The kind of place that makes people like me, a resident of Phoenix, return to again and again. We’re drawn to this northern Arizona city because it’s a haven for recreation, a spiritual destination, and a small town with a sophisticated vibe. Here’s how to experience this enchanting oasis in Red Rock Country—one neighborhood at a time.
WEST SEDONA One of Sedona’s most notable red rock formations, Capitol Butte (or Thunder Mountain) is on full display from the Sedona Airport Scenic Lookout at the top of Airport Road. Pay three dollars to park in the lot across the street from the lookout and enjoy the breathtaking vistas. Nearby Airport Mesa is also one of Sedona’s famed vortexes (centers of energy) that are thought to be healing and energizing. Even if you don’t feel the vortex, you’ll love the scenery. From here, you also can access multiple hiking trails. The Airport Loop Trail is a 3.2-mile relatively flat jaunt offering jaw-dropping views of all the major red rock formations in town. If you’ve worked up an appetite, Chef Mercer Mohr’s Mesa Grill is nearby. Dig into a White Cheddar Burger or a Vegan Burger Bowl at this American spot. If you’re in the mood for more hiking, you can get up close to Capitol Butte on the relatively easy, 1.9-mile Sugarloaf Loop Trail. The Devil’s Bridge sandstone arch has become a social media star and is one popular 4.2-mile out and back hike. Crescent Moon Ranch or Red Rock Crossing offer beautiful views of Cathedral Rock—the most photographed red rock in Sedona.

In the heart of Sedona, Tlaquepaque (pronounced “Ta-la-key-pa-key”) Arts & Shopping Village is a must-visit Sedona institution. Modeled after a Mexican village with sand-colored buildings and fountains, it features more than 50 boutiques and restaurants. Spend an afternoon window shopping. Food highlights include the French fine dining restaurant Rene, the vegetarian spot, The Secret Garden, and the creative desserts at Sedona Cake Couture. Sedona is an artistic town, and home to many art galleries. Find modern art and jewelry at Renee Taylor’s three galleries, wildlife sculpture and art at Rowe Gallery (complete with a tree that runs through the ceiling), and stunning landscape photography at Eclectic Image Gallery. Just across the street from Tlaquepaque is Creekside Coffee. Perk up here, enjoy a decadent pastry, and gaze out the windows showcasing red rocks.

Museum. Modern Mexican restaurant, Elote Café, is notable. The margaritas and signature elote or Mexican corn appetizer are stellar. Reservations are required. All of the red meat at Cowboy Club is fantastic. The old school steakhouse vibe is fun, and the cactus fries are a must.
OAK CREEK CANYON Forgive the pun, but Oak Creek Canyon gorge is a gorgeous place. Drive down this scenic two-lane road that follows Sedona’s main tributary, Oak Creek, in an unforgettable setting of lush green trees and towering red rocks. Pull over at designated spots to soak up the beauty. You can hike, picnic, and fish here. Indian Gardens Café & Market, the oldest continually operated general store in the neighborhood, is a great place to fuel up. Inside, there’s coffee and fresh Southwestern food like Sourdough Chilaquiles at the counter and local products for sale. The trailhead for one of Sedona’s most iconic and magical trails, West Fork, is in this canyon. Hike for three miles one way alongside Oak Creek and towering red rocks. It’s a beautiful sight.
VILLAGE OF OAK CREEK About 20 minutes from Central Sedona, the Village of Oak Creek is home to the popular site, the Chapel of the Holy Cross. Completed in 1956, the stunning chapel is built directly into the red rock. The village also is home to some of Sedona’s well-known hiking trails. Hike Bell Rock Trail 1.1 miles out and back to get a close-up view of this aptly named red rock. For a tough climb and stunning views, hike 1.2 miles to Cathedral Rock. To see all of the major red rock formations in the village, hike the 3.9-mile Courthouse Butte Loop Trail. Post-hike, head to the chic lounge Butterfly Burger that’s helmed by noteworthy Chef Lisa Dahl for its titular food and boozy milkshakes. Sedona is an International Dark Sky City, meaning the city has taken steps to preserve the night sky. Be sure to look up when the sun has gone down to see the sky blanketed with twinkling stars. If you’d like a guided experience, consider booking a tour with Sedona Stargazing. Professional astronomers will give you an overview of major constellations. For more information, see visitsedona.com. ✲
Keep in mind that Sedona is at an elevation of 4,350 feet, and you may feel the effects. Be sure to contact tour companies, attractions, restaurants, and other businesses to confirm hours of operations.
GETTING THERE By Air There are several daily flights from San Diego to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. From Phoenix, it’s a two-hour drive to Sedona. In Black Canyon City, don’t drive past the exit for Rock Spring Café, a legendary restaurant famous for homemade pie. If you have time, Arcosanti is an architectural gem and worth a stop.
By Car From San Diego to Sedona, it’s an eight-hour drive on Interstate 8. Break up the trip with a stop at Yuma and visit Castle Dome Mines Museum & Ghost Town, or Dateland, renowned for its date palm trees, date shakes, and other date delicacies.

GETTING PERSONAL WITH CANCER At UC San Diego Health, personalized medicine means a treatment just for you Dr. Ezra Cohen
Most medicine is based on the expected response from the average person. Personalized medicine, also known as precision medicine, is about tailoring treatment to each individual. This means more precisely diagnosing an individual’s disease and more precisely matching an effective treatment for it. If you’re a cancer patient, personalized medicine may be achieved by gathering information about you and your cancer, your genes, your immune system, and the genes and molecular characterization of your tumor, for example. Your treatment plan is then fine-tuned to your cancer. It takes sophisticated technologies and highly specialized medical expertise to collect and interpret genetic, molecular, and immunological information. This is why the most promising advances in cancer care are happening at NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and university-based medical centers, such as UC San Diego Health and its Precision Immunotherapy Clinic. We asked Dr. Ezra Cohen how he and his and colleagues at UC San Diego Health’s Precision Immunotherapy Clinic are unleashing the immune system to fight cancer. What is immunotherapy, and is it a new frontier for cancer treatment? “Essentially, immunotherapy is harnessing a person’s own immune system to fight, and hopefully eliminate, their cancer. The concept of immunotherapy is not new. It has existed for more than 100 years. What is new is our more sophisticated understanding of the immune system. We now know what turns it on and what turns it off. We know how the immune system goes from recognition to forming a response, and we have the ability to track that. With this knowledge and technology, we are at a point now where we can develop cell therapies, vaccines, and drugs that harness the immune system. Yes, this is the future for oncology. Every oncologist today has at least one patient in their practice who would not be alive with conventional treatment. I have patients who had recurrent or metastatic disease five or six years ago and they are now diseasefree. A decade ago, the treatments we gave them did not exist and these patients would not be alive.” What makes the Precision Immunotherapy Clinic special? “Everyone’s cancer is different. Under the microscope they can look identical, but when we go to the molecular level, no two cancers are exactly the same. And no two immune systems are the same. We all respond differently to cancer and treatments, so it does not make sense to treat two patients the exact same way. At the Precision Immunotherapy Clinic, we evaluate each individual’s cancer at a molecular level and analyze their immune system to devise the best possible therapies and get them into the right clinical trials. This level of sophistication is not possible at most hospitals.” Does each case require extensive collaboration? “Most definitely. Each case is assigned a coordinated team of physicians and scientists. After evaluating a patient’s data, clinical information, and
50
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
personal desires, we hold a Precision Immunotherapy Case Conference to discuss and determine the best therapeutic options. Many times, we can identify a clinical trial that would be a good option. The patient is also a key part of our collaborative process. Most of our patients have done a lot of research on their cancer. They tend to be proactive and eager to pursue the options we find for them.”
UC San Diego Health’s Precision Immunotherapy Clinic
Is immunotherapy an option for people with advanced cancer? “Yes, it is. My colleagues and I already have patients who are alive and cancer-free who would not be ten years ago. Roughly, about 15 percent of patients with advanced disease and solid tumors are responding to immunotherapy to a remarkable degree. At the Precision Immunotherapy Clinic, we are dedicated to taking that number higher by applying a case-by-case approach to understanding the individual’s cancer and immune response, and tailoring therapies accordingly.” Oncologist and internationally renowned cancer researcher, Ezra Cohen, MD, is the director of the UC San Diego Health’s Precision Immunotherapy Clinic, which offers the most promising investigational immunotherapy treatments. TIDE POOLING 101
52
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
Although commonly thought of as an activity best-suited for winter and early spring, in reality any cool day that’s foggy and not too sunny is ideal for your next tide pool adventure. Choose a day when there’s not much on the calendar so you can take your time. To get the most from your experience, here are a few things to know before you go.
SUZANNE OFELDT, SHEWANDERS PHOTOGRAPHY
Dike Rock, La Jolla
Nature is most definitely our greatest teacher. For proof, spend a couple of low-tide hours at the beach. San Diego’s coastline is blessed with several pristine spots where the tides rhythmically rise and fall, creating diverse and remarkable ecosystems for a plethora of adaptable sea creatures.
Tide pools are comprised of three distinct zones. At the highest, the “splash zone” is exposed most of the time and is only submerged at the highest tides. The second, the “middle intertidal zone” is submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide. The third and lowest zone is the “subtidal zone,” which is located below the reefs that are exposed at low tide. This zone stays submerged at low tide, but we’re able to look within and marvel at the fish and other creatures as though we’re peering in a window.
WHAT TO SEEK Any time spent tiptoeing through tide pools is bound to be exciting, but you’ll get more out of the adventure if you know what to look for. The following are just some creatures to have
California Sea Hare
on your radar: Barnacles Found in most tide zones, barnacles are small sea creatures

with a shell. They attach themselves to rocks or other sea creatures and stay there for life. Seek: Tiny shells affixed to something. Their color usually matches their habitat. Hermit Crabs On their own, hermit crabs have a soft shell, so they adapt to a larger one. If you see a scrambling snail, it’s likely a hermit crab. They gather in calm pools of water and under loose rocks. Seek: Snail shells about an inch across or larger that aren’t attached to anything. Limpets There are many types of limpets. They are also plentiful and can be found in many parts of the tide pool including flat exposed areas of rocks and edges of mussel beds. Seek: Small cone-like shells that are firmly attached to rocks. Mussels Mussels assemble themselves by the thousands forming massive clusters. They prefer areas where there is a high flow of water in the middle intertidal range. Seek: Long, almost wedge-shaped shells ranging in hues of dark blue, brown, and black. Sea Anemones Since they need to be covered by water most of the time, expect to find sea anemones in calm pools of water. Also check for them in deep cracks or in flat areas where the water congregates. Related to jellyfish, sea anemones can sting,
Mussels
so do not touch. Seek: Submerged organisms that resemble flowers with petal-like tentacles circling the mouth. Sea Hares The color of these slimy looking sea slugs changes based on pools and other intertidal areas where there is a good amount of algae. Seek: Blobs that resemble jelly with no obvious shell or limbs.

TIDE POOLING TIPS Sea Stars The sea stars we find in tide pools commonly have five arms with eyes at the end of each. They propel themselves with tiny tube feet. Look for them in shallow spots within mussel and barnacle beds. Seek: Submerged creatures with multiple arms and many short spines or bumps on top in a wide-range of colors. Shore Crabs Shore crabs are wary of visitors, so be patient. Scooting this way and that, they hide in crevices and can be found in the water or on the rocks above it. Seek: Fast-moving critters with jointed legs and upturned spikes at the edge of their shells. Marine Snails Similar in appearance to garden snails, marine snails like calmer
1. Check the tide chart for the tide pools you’re visiting and plan to get there one hour before low tide. 2. Wear sturdy shoes with ground gripping, water resistant soles. 3. Step carefully to avoid crushing animals and plants. 4. Touch organisms gently and briefly, if at all. 5. Do not remove any animals, shells, or rocks.

SPRING IS THE TIME FOR BREAKS, and this spring we need one more than ever. So, grab your flip flops and the kids—especially the teenagers—and head up the coast to Oceanside for a laid-back day filled with sun, sand, surf, and good vibrations. San Diego County’s northernmost beach town boasts more than 3.5 miles of wide sandy beaches, plus miles upon miles of trails for cycling, running, and walking. Its far-stretching harbor is the launching point for all kinds of water adventures from deep-sea fishing to whale watching cruises. Downtown there’s an array of unique eateries, cute shops, and museums to discover. And, for tweens and teens, there are extreme adventures that take things up a notch. HANG TEN Referred to by many as California’s capital of surf, Oceanside is home to lots of professional surfers, surf instructors, and future surf stars. According to The Encyclopedia of Surfing, it is “one of Southern California’s most consistent surf spots” with waves practically guaranteed year-round on both sides of the pier and other beach breaks along its gorgeous 3.5mile stretch of beach. If you’re just getting your toes wet with the sport, arrange to take lessons with one of Oceanside’s surf schools. If the act of paddling out and catching waves isn’t your thing, you won’t feel left out. Surfing is so deeply engrained in the culture of this town that it oozes out into the streets and alleys. Oceanside has been at the forefront of surfboard design and manufacturing since the 1950s. Visit Shaper’s Alley to get a full appreciation for the number and quality of surfboards that are created there. Also check out the California Surf Museum. Besides a permanent collection that chronicles the history of surfboards and wave riding, it features a stunning collection of surfboards showcasing the progression of materials used by surfers from around the world. HANG TOUGH For a fun way to explore the town, O’side Ride has a fleet of freakishly fun fat-tire electric rides for rent. HANG OUT Not every activity in Oceanside is going to make your heart race. Oceanside has the honor of being one of just 14 California cities to be designated a California Cultural District. You could spend the entire day visiting museums and galleries! In addition to the California Surf Museum, Oceanside Museum of Art is located in the heart of town. It features exhibitions of contemporary art, landscape painting, photography, neon sculpture, and studio furniture. Five miles to the east, Mission San Luis Rey has an interpretive museum dedicated to its Franciscan heritage. As you walk around this friendly town, you’ll grow to appreciate Oceanside’s strong creative foundation in the stunning murals you’ll find on ordinary buildings. Go on your own mural hunt! The Visit Oceanside Conference and Visitors Bureau has created a downloadable map with specific mural location information available on their website, visitoceanside.org. HANGRY? NO WAY! When it comes to food, Oceanside is a haven for foodies. The downtown area has something for everyone’s palate, from the pickiest to the most adventurous. Locally known as “flip-flop fine dining,” Oceanside prides itself on its array of restaurants offering fresh, locally sourced ingredients, creative style, and a collaborative community spirit. If you visit on Thursday, head for the MainStreet Oceanside Farmers' Market and feel an instant connection to the community. Local farmers, artisans, and chefs form an impressive stretch of booths featuring just-picked organic produce, handmade jewelry, clothing, soaps, and scrumptious baked goods. Order lunch or a snack from one of the innovative food vendors. Look for the Boo-ba-licious tent featuring Boo Boo’s Sweet Potato Pies (original, vegan, and gluten-free varieties) made with love by a very huggable Oceanside grandma, and treat everyone to a mini pie. Also be sure to step right up to the red and white striped tent and select a bucket or two of Cheryl’s Caramels. Handmade with love by Oceanside resident, Cheryl Stoner, these fresh, soft, and buttery caramels come in a variety of decadent flavors. You won’t get hangry and you won’t get thirsty, either. Oceanside is home to several award-winning craft breweries, winery tasting rooms, and more than a dozen craft coffee venues, each with its own imaginative flair. At day’s end, when you brush the sand from your feet and settle back into the car, don’t be surprised if you’re humming a Beach Boys tune. O’side sets off good vibrations. The kind of vibe the whole family could use right now. ✲
When You Go
Most of the activities we mention here require advance reservations, so be sure to call ahead. Oceanside is located 35 miles north of the San Diego city limit. If driving, follow I-5 North. If taking the Coaster commuter train, consult the time schedule at gonctd.com.

Getting hooked on hiking in Mission Trails Regional Park PHOTOS BY MICHELE ADDINGTON
Reaching the summit of Kwaay Paay Peak
Feeling an extra spring in your step this season? It’s time to get outside and celebrate our beautiful surroundings while you do something that’s good for you. Hiking checks all the boxes: It’s fun, it’s healthy and, in San Diego, we have so many options. Known far and wide for its diverse topography, San Diego County boasts many hiking trails that lead us along beaches, ridges, canyons, and mountains. Perhaps most notable is the trail system at Mission Trails Regional Park, one the largest urban parks in the entire nation. 68
ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
Located only eight miles northeast of downtown San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park covers 8,000 acres of mountains, lakes, and valleys. It’s home to nearly 65 miles of trails, two lakes, a stretch of the San Diego River, and the Old Mission Dam—a California State Historical Landmark. The breadth and biodiversity of this open space urban park is so remarkable that some people get hooked on hiking its trails several times a week—or in the case of Michele Addington—practically every day. Michele, who moved to San Diego with her family as a child in 1982, discovered Mission Trails soon after her arrival. “Even then I loved nature, and Mission Trails was practically in our backyard,” Michele says. Today, she
knows every trail like the back of her hand. She has found a way to share her passion by routinely planning and leading small groups of hikers through the Meetup group, East County Singles and Couples Over 45. Meetup is an online platform for people to find opportunities to learn new things, meet people, and pursue passions— like hiking—with others. “Social Pace is how I refer to the speed of most of my hikes,” Michele says. “This provides the opportunity for the hikers to search for flowers and shrubs and discuss what they are. We talk about their names and how they were used by the Kumeyaay. We just saw a roadrunner this week!” Michele explains that during this period of COVID-19, people have been eager to connect with each other and her hikes offer them that opportunity. “Health is another reason people start to hike,” Michele says. “They want to lose weight or maintain weight, hiking certainly offers that.” Beyond weight loss, the American Hiking Society reports that hiking can reduce the risk of many more health issues including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, anxiety, osteoporosis, and arthritis. Since walking is low impact, hikers derive the cardiovascular benefits of aerobic activity with a minimum of stress, strain, and pounding to the body.

As a co-organizer for the East County Singles and Couples Over 45 group, Michele plans her hikes several weeks in advance. “I always stress safety first. I provide a list of what to bring, which always includes plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, gloves, snacks, ICE (in case of emergency phone number), a good pair of hiking boots with a change of shoes and socks to leave in the car,” she explains. She also recommends bringing collapsible hiking poles on moderate to difficult hikes as well as a camera and a curiosity about nature. “It’s also smart to have the park ranger’s number in your phone and an extra jug of water in your car. I can’t stress safety enough.” Michele says. Michele cautions hikers to be mindful of the temperature when they’re preparing for a hike. “Mission Trails Regional Park is hot in the summer so hiking during the heat of the day (from 11 am to 3 pm) is never a good idea,” she says. “I prefer to start a hike early in the morning and finish no later

than 11 am. I don’t lead hikes in the afternoon and evening because I want the wildlife to have a chance to regain their territory.” Michele stresses to hikers setting off in the heat that they should always carry more water than they think they will need and have the park ranger’s number on their fully charged phones. “A sprained ankle can become a dangerous situation if you’re not properly prepared,” she says. One more word of caution: When the temperature rises above 80 degrees, watch for snakes on the trails. “If the trail is narrow, hike in the center of the trail and listen for signs of rattlesnakes,” Michele advises. “Do not go off trail and be ready to stop and take a few steps backwards to give the rattler room and time to move.” Once fully prepared, all you have left to do is have a wonderful time. There is so much to discover and enjoy along the trails and overhead. No matter how often you visit, you are always bound to see something more. “I’ve hiked Mission Trails a thousand times,” Michele says, “and no two hikes have ever been the same.” We asked Michele to share four of her favorite hikes with us. Choose one, follow her guidelines carefully, and have fun, or sign up to hike with her at meetup.com/East-County-Singles-over-49-having-FUN/. ✲

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM
Coffee is more than a drink, it’s part of our culture. Sure, we can make it at home, but then we would miss the tantalizing ritual of ordering, waiting, and taking that first sip. It’s fun to try coffee shops and kiosks for the first time, so check out these unique, locally owned spots and see why they’re worth raving about.
CAFÉS Barefoot Coffee Roasters The first thing to note about this ultra-popular café is the coffee beans. They are scrupulously sourced from the highest quality coffee plantations and roasted by hand in small batches to optimize their specific flavor notes. Located in the hip Cedros Design District, Barefoot expresses its own artistic flair with an imaginative menu of coffee and food creations. The Voodoo®, Barefoot’s take on a coconut mocha, is probably the most popular choice at the moment. Also getting rave reviews are the Cacophony, a cappuccino infused with sugar, cayenne, cocoa, and cinnamon, and Affogatos, made with JoJo’s Creamery ice cream. The Breakfasty, a warm biscuit with egg, spinach, and melted cheese is a must-try for foodies. Barefoot also serves delicious toasts on Prager Brothers bread, sandwiches, and the amazing Cardiff Crack Tri Tip tacos. The Lox Toast with tomatoes, cream cheese, capers, and everything bagel seasoning tastes great with any coffee drink on the menu and is available all day. Barefoot curates every ingredient they use from the finest artisans and sources organic when possible. They also serve craft beer from several local breweries with a daily happy hour for discounted wine and beer. Grab a table inside or head to the expansive patio to soak up the South Cedros vibe next to Barefoot’s fire table. Barefoot Coffee Roasters, 439 S Cedros Ave, Ste 204, Solana Beach
Brick & Bell's charming Village of La Jolla shop
Brick & Bell There are two shops (one in the heart of the Village of La Jolla and the other in La Jolla Shores) to try. The Village café is located in a quaint 100-year-old building with a brick façade. The best seats in the house are in front of it where you can admire the building and smile at people passing by. There’s not much room inside the shop. It’s all about putting in your coffee order and picking something wonderful from the display cases of delicious baked goods. Besides a long menu of hot drinks, they offer a nice selection of tea and iced drinks. Brick & Bell serves delicious breakfasts, hearty sandwiches, and, of course, you must order some scones. Baked fresh each morning, they have a miniversion, the ideal size to accompany one cup of coffee. The mixed berry covered with sesame seeds has a delightful tangy flavor, while the maple covered with a generous dollop of frosting is decidedly sweet. There’s also cranberry, chocolate chip, and plenty of other options to try with a second cup of coffee. Brick & Bell has a warm, neighborhood feeling about it that invites good conversation over an excellent cup of coffee and a baked good or two. The way to start the day at Elixir Espresso & Wine Bar
Elixir Espresso & Wine Bar One of three locations (the others are in UTC and downtown San Diego), this busy coffee shop is located on the bottom floor of La Plaza La Jolla. It has a sleek feeling about it with industrial wood, metal décor, and an intimate lounge area. You can settle in there or move out into the courtyard area they share with other plaza shops. But, first, order a coffee or espresso drink made from their signature Screaming Goat Espresso, which is rich and full-bodied with notes of dark chocolate that leave a smooth, pleasant lingering sensation of brown sugar with a smooth finish. The food options are impressive. The Avocado Toast has lots of flavors and textures: seeded multigrain toast covered with avocado, arugula, feta cheese, and slices of hardboiled egg. Elixir also has fresh baked pastries, gelato, gluten-free donuts and desserts, flabtreads, and a fabulous selection of crepes—from the Breakfast Crepe featuring eggs, ham, and mozzarella to the YummyYummy Crepe featuring strawberries, bananas, Nutella, or other delicious things. Wine and local craft beers are also on the menu. The wine selection focuses on California wines available by the glass or bottle. Elixir brings a cool vibe to this part of the Village of La Jolla. Watch for the unassuming metal kiosk as you head east on Sunset Cliffs, and get in line, if necessary. It’s that good. Besides a solid list of excellent hot and iced coffee drinks, there are muffins, bagels—all the basics done just right. Owner John Carpenter has the reputation for being as good at making coffee creations as he is at being friendly. Drive through or park on the street and walk up to make a new friend. THE LEGACY OF IRON Azmi Soylu’s designs in wrought iron withstand the test of time
The art of working iron is an ancient skill practiced with passion by Azmi Soylu who, along with his wife, Darya, owns Gentry Custom Furniture. Gentry is the premier designer and manufacturer of European-style wrought iron furniture and décor for the home and garden—items that withstand the test of time. Ideal for the San Diego lifestyle, each piece in their collection is as sturdy as it is beautiful. We’ve asked Azmi to tell us more. About getting started: I worked in my family’s mining business in Europe until 1999, when I moved to Atlanta to pursue my passion for furniture design. I learned a lot about the American market from furniture buyers and began manufacturing products in my own factory The Soylu family in Bulgaria. These products were very well received, and the following year, I was able offer the first collection of Gentry Custom Furniture products at the International Home Furniture Show, the world’s largest furnishings industry trade show, in High durable base paint suitable for all weather. MAKING IT REAL
PIRCH’s real lifestyle home showrooms bring design ideas to life
When PIRCH recently opened two new showrooms in Solana Beach’s Cedros Design District, they brought in everything but sand from the beach. That’s because PIRCH provides more than chic showrooms for highend home fixtures and appliances, they offer a forum for experiential design. Beyond the typical vignette, which is commonly used in home design stores to show us how appliances and fixtures look when grouped together, PIRCH showrooms provide complete, working set-ups so customers can actually turn things on and off and get a feel for how they function in a real setting. The experience is similar to a model home visit. By interacting with everything firsthand, customers grasp the quality of craftsmanship and how the appliances will look and function in a real home. This provides a wealth of insight to homeowners, interior designers, architects, and contractors—anyone involved in making home design decisions. Situated a block and a half apart on Cedros Avenue, one showroom is dedicated to kitchens and one to the bath (inside) and outdoor living (on an outdoor patio). Although it’s a pleasant stroll between the two locations, a golf cart is available to transport customers who would appreciate a lift. To allow each customer the very best showroom experience, appointments are necessary and can be made online at pirch.com or by phone. ✲

VERY NORTH COUNTY
Solana Beach’s Cedros Soles is celebrating the big 2-0 in style
NOUSHIN NOURIZADEH
In the heart of North County’s Cedros Avenue, Cedros Soles is at the top of our list. Step inside and you’re bound to be drawn to something from the well-curated mix of clothing and accessories—items that are on trend now but also are made to last. Besides its expansive space dedicated to women, the store has departments for men and kids. Everything is geared to the North County lifestyle. Basic, quality pieces you keep reaching for in your closet for many years, because they never go out of style. “Our roots are in North County San Diego,” explains co-owner, Stephanie Stock. “I grew up in Encinitas and love our coastal towns. The casual vibe of the beach and surf is natural for me and I think the store reflects this. If you need jeans, T-shirts, and fabulous sweaters, we are the place to go.”
2
This May, when Cedros Soles observes its twentieth anniversary, they’ll have to do without the major party Stephanie would have thrown prior to the pandemic. “We’re going to get creative and find ways to thank our amazing customers for keeping us around so long,” Stephanie says. “Being closed during COVID-19 deprived us of the relationships we have cultivated over all these years. It makes me realize how many customers we count as friends.”

In lieu of popping champagne corks, the plan is to pop out a wall. “We are going to take down the wall separating the space between our women’s and men’s and kids’ retail spaces and make the store flow as one large space,” Stephanie says. “It will be a great way to celebrate all of our product assortment, our loyal customers, and our twentieth year as a business in this beautiful community.” ✲
