“I have always had the philosophy that everything we do in life should have passion, integrity, adaptability and style. That is exactly what Just Run is built on.” I have a passion for running, my community, new experiences and have always loved the shoe design industry. It is important for me to bring the best products, backed with integrity, to the same neighborhood I call home. My goal was to have a specialty store that is not only passionate and skilled enough to sell a marathoner their ‘race-day shoes’, but at the same time provide the same quality of service for a walker, runner or the every day ‘twenty-four seven’ customer. Let’s be real, We all want to feel good and look good , I am just making it easier to do both at the same time. And I love it!

{ COMMUNITY }

AT THE VANGUARD OF CULTURE Bringing together a community of artists, performers, foodies and arts lovers BY WENDY LEMLIN

VANGUARD CULTURE

Vanguard Culture founder Susanna Peredo Swap has been seriously

cultural epicenters of Paris and New York City—as well as traveling in 15 different countries—her experiences ran the gamut from arts administration, advocacy and public relations to active participation as an actor and jazz vocalist. When she returned to San Diego after living through 9/11 in New York City, she immersed herself in the local arts scene, but soon realized that the area lacked a cohesiveness and sense of community among the various sectors in San Diego’s cultural landscape. There was little to no connection between performing and culinary arts, for example, or between visual artists and musicians. So she decided to do something about

Other programs include: • Food Events, such as the Ceviche Chef Showdown Competition, or The Foodie Soirées—industry mixers and food sharing get-togethers for Creatives, featuring art installations, performances, chef demos and more. • The FORUM, a professional development workshop series designed to support San Diego’s creative industries and educate participants on the business side of their respective industries.

grew to encompass a wide variety of art and foodie events; today, the all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is dedicated to advancing and bringing together San Diego’s eclectic creative industries. To accomplish this, the group engages the community with quality arts journalism, industry mixers, public events and professional development. With over 15,000 subscribers and with as many as 10,000 views a month on their website, it’s obvious that the group is doing something right. “We think of Vanguard Culture as a virtual space where creativity can be inspired amongst ourselves by one another’s work,” Peredo Swap explains. “For instance, in our Dine with an Artist series, 10 to 12 guests enjoy a four-course meal with a prominent local artist, musician, designer or arts leader. The featured chef creates a menu inspired by the work of the artist, and the lucky diners enjoy the rewards of great food and conversation with other art and culture aficionados in an intimate setting. On August 11, Dine with an Artist will feature iconic clothes designer Dame Zandra Rhodes and the

Arts coverage is central to Vanguard Culture’s mission and is accomplished through three channels on the website: • The Buzz, articles covering artist interviews, show reviews and other insights into San Diego’s arts and culture scene. • The Dish, restaurant reviews and food critiques. • Poetic License, a chronicle of art studio visits. “We hope to elevate San Diego’s cultural identity,” Peredo Swap adds, “and increase cultural tourism to our city. Studies have shown that visitors who travel for the arts tend to stay longer and spend more money in the cities they visit. So, if we can create a thoughtful city plan for infrastructure to support San Diego’s creative industries, the potential is tremendous.” ✲

STANDING UP FOR SCIENCE

The Fleet Science Center’s CEO takes STEM learning to the community BY BRIANNE BROWN

20

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

HOLDING A SIGN THAT READ, “Stand Up for Science,” Dr. Steve Snyder joined many of his colleagues from the Fleet Science Center as they made their way down Harbor Drive at the 2018 March for Science San Diego on April 14. Not only does Snyder talk the talk and encourage those around him to stand up for science, but his work with the 45-year-old museum in Balboa Park proves that he walks the walk, too—and not just when he’s marching. Snyder, the President & CEO of the Fleet Science Center, is a passionate advocate for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and works diligently to not only develop educational programming within the walls of the museum but also to bring science out to the community. After taking the science center’s helm in 2013, he expanded the mission of the institution, broadening the reach of programs such as the Fleet Inquiry Institute—which teaches the inquiry method of science learning to more than 1,000 San Diego-area educators per year—and launched 52 Weeks of Science, a program that leverages community resources to bring science and technology events to San Diegans of all ages in the communities in which they live, work and play. But inside the walls of the Fleet, too, Snyder is making a difference. In June, the museum’s annual fundraising gala—Busting the Myths of Wine—raised more than $205,000 that will directly benefit the Fleet and its mission to connect all San Diegans to the power of science. “By expanding who we reach and where we reach them, we are moving towards our goal of realizing a San Diego where everyone is connected to the power of science,” Snyder says. While many San Diegans likely visited the Fleet on a field trip as students, Snyder balks at the thought that the Fleet is old and venerable. “We are always evolving and bringing in new and exciting programs and exhibitions. Every time you visit the Fleet, you experience something new,” he says. Indeed, the Fleet’s latest offering, MythBusters: The Explosive Exhibition, takes up almost half of the second floor and is an interactive exhibition that allows visitors to debunk commonly held beliefs they like do on the popular television show. The exhibition also features a live show that encourages audience members to participate using the scientific method. During the staff preview, Snyder bravely volunteered to participate in the live demonstration where his reflexes and reactions to both light and sound were tested. “If you’ve never tried to dodge a paintball, you haven’t truly lived,” he laughs. Whether he’s marching for science or dodging paintballs, Snyder is making a difference in the community. San Diego is home to many different industries that specialize in science and technology, so grooming the next generation of scientists is incredibly important to Snyder. And under his guidance, the Fleet Science Center is doing just that. ✲

SIMPLE PLEASURES

THATCH brings sweet simplicity to quality jewelry Tucked away amidst the hustle and bustle of Liberty Station is a shop that specializes in simplicity. THATCH jewelry is made by hand right here in this unimposing, sunny design studio. The all-female metalsmith team uses repurposed, locally sourced 14k gold and sterling silver to create a lineup of forward yet simplistic 14k vermeil boutique jewelry. The THATCH collection is inspired by modern lines, art and the stars in the night sky. The philosophy of the collection is to create a quality, made-by-hand jewelry collection accessible to women; a fine jewelry sensibility with a much softer price tag. The brand launched with the signature constellation collection as well as custom engravable pieces to honor life’s milestones and has since grown to encompass a wide assortment of necklaces, cuffs, earrings and rings. The small team of five women handles all aspects of the business in-house, from design and production to sales and marketing. In 2017, they opened a little showroom (coined the “jewel box”) to showcase their collections and meet with stylists, brides and anyone who wanted to come in and be adorned. Since then, the women have created every piece with love, to be loved by those who recognize the true value of a unique, handcrafted piece of fine jewelry.

A LOOK BEHIND THE FRAMES In 1981, Anne et Valentin opened a small frame shop in a beautiful location in the historic 15th century city of Toulouse, in the south of France. It was quickly discovered that the frame selection in France at the time was very poor. The only way to improve their selection for their customers was to create, design and manufacture their own collection. The first small collection debuted in their own shop and with a few international opticians. In 1994, the first titanium frames were introduced. Today, Anne et Valentin is sold in 20 countries in the finest boutiques. It remains a small company, employing fewer than 30 people globally. The frames embody a timeless beauty and strength with a chic, modern bent. Find these classic frames at Be Seen Optics. Anne et Valentin Eyewear {1} Cool, $420 {2} Picture, $555 {3} Alma, $405

BLOCK OUT

Tips for choosing and applying sunscreen BY NORA BYRNE

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE A SUNSCREEN, REVIEW THE LABEL TO SEE IF IT: 1. Offers broad-spectrum protection. This means that it protects you from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of your skin, prematurely aging your skin and leading to wrinkles and age spots. UVB rays damage the upper layers of your skin, causing redness and sunburn. And both UVA and UVB rays can cause cancer. 2. Provides a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. SPF refers to how well a sunscreen can protect you from UVB rays specifically. In other words, it indicates how well it can keep your skin from burning. No sunscreen can block all UVB rays, but those with SPF 30 can block 97 percent of UVB rays. An SPF above 30 can block slightly more, but it’s really only an incremental improvement. 3. Is water resistant. No sunscreen is waterproof. Water and sweat will wash it off eventually. That’s why you have to reapply it periodically. But sunscreens can resist water for a certain amount of time. If the label says “water resistant,” that means it’s effective for about 40 minutes in the water; “very water resistant” means it’s effective for about 80 minutes in the water.

SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

4. Contains the type of active ingredients you prefer. Some ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide, deflect the sun’s rays. Those products that contain these active ingredients are known as physical sunscreens. Other ingredients, such as oxybenzone, absorb the sun’s rays and are known as chemical sunscreens. Some products contain a mix of both types of active ingredients.

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage your skin and can even lead to skin cancer. That’s why it’s so important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays with a good, quality sunscreen. But with so many options to choose from, how can you be sure you’ve picked the right one?

30

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

Physical and chemical sunscreens can be equally effective, provided they meet the other criteria mentioned above and are applied properly. But they differ in other ways. Physical sunscreens are hypoallergenic, so they may be better for those with sensitive skin. But they also don’t absorb into the skin as well, so they tend to be more visible. Chemical sunscreens absorb better, so they’re less conspicuous. But some research suggests that the chemical oxybenzone can be harmful to coral reefs. So if you live in or are visiting an area with coral reefs, you may want to choose a physical sunscreen instead. Of course, finding a good sunscreen is only half the battle. It’s equally important to apply it properly. So here are a few tips to help you do just that. • How much? A good rule of thumb is to use one ounce of sunscreen. That’s roughly the amount needed to fill a shot glass. • How often? Apply 15 minutes before you’re going to be in the sun. After that, reapply at least every two hours. You may need to reapply more often if you’re going to be in the water or sweating a lot—for instance, every 40 or 80 minutes, depending on if your sunscreen is “water resistant” or “very water resistant.” • Where? Apply sunscreen to any exposed skin, including your lips. You may want to buy a separate lip balm that contains SPF. The right sunscreen applied properly can help you protect your skin. And that can help you stay safe and enjoy your summer to the fullest. ✲

Take history and adventure to new heights in Cusco, Peru BY EMILY BOOTH

ucked away up high in the Andes sits an opportunity to travel back in time. Cobblestone-lined streets narrowly pave the way up mountainous hills, while a native woman dressed in fluorescent, traditional clothing smiles at you kindly. The architecture looks like something out of the European Renaissance, complete with wooden balconies and lavish places of worship, but the Inca foundation tells an

even older story. And just as the sweeping views of the surrounding mountains take your breath away, you’ll need to pause for a moment and remember to breathe. After all, you’re standing at 11,200 feet above sea level and there’s still a lot more to take in. This is Cusco, Peru, the former capital of the Inca Empire and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Western Hemisphere. Oozing with history, culture and activities, this fascinating town is so much more than a jumping-off point for expeditions to the nearby Machu Picchu. While it would be foolish not to pay a visit to one of the Seven Wonders of the World while you’re there, Cusco itself is worth the trip. Aptly dubbed

the “Rome of South America,” Cusco’s history dates back as far as 1000 B.C., with the Incas beginning to appear around 1200 A.D. It wasn’t until 1438 that their civilization really began to flourish as they expanded their empire throughout South America—all without the use of wheeled vehicles, working animals, knowledge of steel and a system of writing. The civilization that continues to baffle modern-day archaeologists eventually began to crumble due to a combination of a civil war and widespread disease, and then finally to Spanish rule in 1572. With excavation sites visible throughout the city today and much mystery still to be solved, exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a

must. Start the day at the vibrant Plaza de Armas and marvel at stunning architecture while standing in the exact center of what was once the Inca Empire. From there, wander into any of the three significant churches, particularly the famed La Catedral. A piece of art in itself, the cathedral has become a major repository for colonial artwork and archaeological artifacts, which hang from a gold and silver-drenched interior. Just south of the plaza sits the strategically placed Temple of the Sun, or Coricancha, which once served as the Inca’s most sacred and central site. What’s left now is a rather large Spanish fingerprint on top of sophisticated Inca masonry—a unique fusion of two cultures and eras worth seeing firsthand.

Peruvian man playing a flute, Sacred Valley

- IF YOU GO DAY TRIPS Don’t miss the stunning views of The Sacred Valley, or the pristine sight of the salt ponds of Maras, both of which can be done in a day. Last, but certainly not least, put aside a few days for the wonder that is Machu Picchu. While it can be done in a single day via train, many tour agencies around town offer multi-day trekking trips for all ages and budgets. Ambitious hikers wishing to take on The Inca Trail will need to plan ahead, as space is limited year-round.

GETTING THERE American Airlines and LATAM Airlines offer daily, direct flights to Lima from LAX. From there, choose one of the many South American-based airlines that fly to Cusco every hour. After you’ve endured the rather lengthy nine-hour flight to Peru, you’ll be pleased to know the second leg is a mere hour and 20 minutes short.

WHERE TO STAY ERIC WILSON

While Cusco’s history is what draws travelers in initially, the artsy nooks and local markets will make you want to stay awhile. The picturesque Barrio de San Blas is any romantic’s dream and boasts views and serenity with which the Plaza de Armas cannot compete. Take the uphill journey slowly though, because although the walk itself isn’t very far, it is quite steep—particularly at 11,000 feet above sea level. Upon arriving to this little slice of Spanish-influenced paradise, prepare to get lost in artisan-everything. Workshops, galleries, cafes and bars colorfully adorn the neighborhood, and exploring all of these could quite easily consume half the day. A few minutes south of Plaza de Armas awaits a taste of Cusco’s lively local scene: San Pedro Market. Haggle with local vendors over a new woven alpaca sweater, a pound of produce or a few trinkets to take home with you. Slow down and warm up with a bowl of sopa (traditional Peruvian soup rich in quinoa, potatoes and lots of veggies) and a plate of lomo saltado (stir fried beef), or sip on a cup of coca leaf tea to combat the altitude. This gigantic, three-block market sells anything you can (and cannot) dream up. Once the capital to one of the most extraordinary empires of all time, Cusco is now home to palpable history, magnificent surroundings and colorful cuisine. Spanish influence gives way to a more primitive foundation and deeper roots, giving it an unparalleled charm. With museums, restaurants and excursions galore, there’s plenty of magic for everyone in this utopian-like city in the Andes. ✲

Lodging in Cusco is an abundant mix of hotels, hostels and vacation homes. For a taste of luxury, try the Palacio del Inca or the JW Marriott. Both are set in historical buildings and offer impeccable style and world-class spas. Mid-range hotels like Novotel Cusco Hotel boast modern renovations and historic charm, complete with fantastic courtyards.

WHERE TO EAT Being named the Leading Culinary Destination by the World Travel Association is no small feat, but Peru has claimed the top spot for six years in a row! The capital city of Lima has paved the way for the rest of the country, and Cusco is just the place to dig in. Acclaimed South American chef Gastón Acurio’s Chicha gives guests a creative sample of the region, while Pacha Papa gives food adventurers the opportunity to try the Peruvian delicacy, Cuy—guinea pig. And if not-sogamey food is what you’re after, highly-rated vegetarian and international restaurants abound. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on a pisco sour at one of the many bars around town!

NATUROPATHIC WELLNESS KOI Wellbeing focuses on patients’ individual needs BY BRIANNE BROWN Dr. Brooke Leverone

DR. BROOKE LEVERONE always knew she wanted to work in the medical field. Raised by a mother who stressed the importance of eating her vegetables, avoiding soda and sugar and getting outdoors regularly, Dr. Leverone knew from an early age that naturopathic medicine was her calling. But it almost didn’t happen that way. “I was going to traditional medical school for my MD, but I became disenchanted with the profession,” Leverone states. “So I took some time off after undergrad to travel and do volunteer work. It was during this time that I met a woman who was a naturopathic doctor and she inspired me to look into it.” The rest, as they say, is history: Leverone applied to The School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University and went on to obtain a residency in women’s health specializing in functional medicine and bioidentical hormones. Following that experience, Leverone knew she had found her calling. “I wasn’t sure 38

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

that this was the specialty I would stick with, but the impact we made on women’s lives was so profound, I knew this was what I wanted to focus on.” Connecting with KOI Wellbeing CEO Jeff Sternberg and CFO Leah Freeland proved to be exactly what Dr. Leverone needed. “[They] had a vision to create a space of wellness for the community. … The concept they had of bridging the gap between traditional western medicine and naturopathic medicine aligned with my own beliefs of practicing medicine,” she notes. “At KOI, we believe that everyone has the right to optimal health and wellness, and that’s exactly what we’re here to provide.” In addition to hormone therapy, KOI and the doctors that work there provide healthcare for the whole family and specialty services. Leverone’s unique understanding of hormone therapy allows her to treat her patients with their total health in mind, rather than simply treating symptoms. “So many women feel like they are ‘crazy,’ when really it’s just that traditional medical care doesn’t focus on hormones. Too many women are walking around feeling like there is something wrong with them and they don’t have to. That’s why I’m so passionate about educating people about their health and hormones and letting them know that there are other options. “ Patients at KOI Wellbeing can benefit from hormone balancing treatment and bioidentical therapy. Because hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, insulin and cortisol are vital to maintaining overall health, an imbalance can cause symptoms ranging from hot flashes to digestive problems and insomnia. These issues can often be addressed with a customized treatment plan that may include professional-grade supplements, nutrient injections and lifestyle recommendations. In addition to educating patients on how hormones can affect their everyday lives, Dr. Leverone believes that people can take additional preventative measures to feel their best every day. “Minimizing stress and reducing inflammation are two of the most important preventative measures we can all benefit from. Take time out for yourself every day, get out into nature and unplug from the technology for awhile. It’s also important that you’re recovering from the day with a proper 7–8 hours of sleep every night!” While no one really enjoys going to the doctor, Dr. Leverone is looking to change that. “Most people dread going to the doctor, and who can blame them? The waiting rooms aren’t that comfortable, it feels cramped with people who are sick and it’s usually in an office building with fluorescent lights. KOI created space that is filled with natural light and feels very much like a spa. We’re here to help people, not make them more stressed. Our whole team strives to make sure our clients have what they need and are taken care of.” ✲

Tastes Like

Summer! Is it just us, or does everything taste better this season? BY WENDY LEMLIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY NOUSHIN NOURIZADEH

Now that May gray and June gloom are behind us, we welcome summer’s warm embrace. We welcome her bright-as-sunshine flavors and the freshness of just-picked ingredients. We welcome the lighter textures of the season's dishes and all the components of the taste of summer. But, really, what does summer taste like? At Beaumont’s Eatery in Bird Rock, Chefs Shahab Porteymoor and Sebastian Ahmadpour will tell you that it’s all about sun-ripened tomatoes, at their peak locally right now. In their Heirloom Tomato Salad, the fruits (yes, a tomato is a fruit!) are showcased in a “shareable” dish, but it’s so good that you'll probably want to keep it all to yourself. Going beyond the usual, the tomatoes are partnered with tangy goat cheese and bathed in a cold-smoked tomato brodo (broth), for that extra layer of flavor,

augmented with fresh herbs, smoked salt and confit garlic. “When they are in season, tomatoes exemplify summer flavor in a wonderful balance of sweetness and acid,” Porteymoor explains. “It is a social season, and our new menu encourages friends dining together and sharing multiple items, and, in this way, the taste of summer is also the taste of companionship and fun.” Local seafood paired with seasonal fruits and vegetables ranks high on the list of summer’s quintessential palate. Steven Riemer, Executive Chef at The Catamaran Resort’s signature restaurant, Oceana, combines all the tasty elements of the season in a Seabass Ceviche with Cucumber, Avocado & Jalapeno. “I love crispy fresh cucumbers, and summer is their prime season,” he enthuses. “Being right here on the water at Mission Bay, ceviche is the perfect patio appetizer, bringing ocean and earth together. It’s light, yet satisfying, and combines local ingredients that are at their best right now—fresh seabass caught in our waters, California avocados, tomatoes and a touch of mango—all refreshingly tied together by the citrusy lime marinade. Go beyond the usual Margarita for a cocktail pairing; I highly recommend a Mai Tai for an extra-summery tropical kick.” For Chef Paul Arias at The Fishery, spot prawns are the stars of summer seafood. Trap-caught about 50 miles off our shores at a depth of several hundred feet, they are only harvested when the seas calm in late spring and summer. Spot prawns have an exceptional marine sweetness due to the colder waters in which they live, and Arias combines these limited-availability crustaceans with classic ingredients from neighborhood farmers markets in Chilled Spot Prawns with Corn, Peach and Avocado Salad. “Stonefruit like peaches and fresh corn right off

the cob pair an inherent sweetness with the richness of seafood; locally grown tomatoes add a complement of acidity,” he states. “This is a luxurious dish that nonetheless exudes the casual vibe of summer.” Drawing on his French background, The Marine Room’s Executive Chef, Bernard Guillas, presents Héritage Jambon De Bayonne Prosciutto as his idea of how summer should taste. “Héritage Jambon de Bayonne, is the prosciutto of France, air cured in the Basque and Gascon regions in the south, and its nutty flavor and ‘melt in the mouth’ texture makes it one of my favorites,” he raves. “This preparation embraces the season with the quintessential American summer fruit, compressed watermelon, and locally harvested leaves and flowers. The creaminess of the feta, crunch of pistachio and delicate soft gel of 50-year-old sherry weaves all of the flavors together in a celebration of summer.” Conjuring up the ideal day at the beach, Paglia e Fieno is Osteria Romantica’s homage to the season in owner Fabio Speziali’s native Italy. Succulent clams are the main attraction in this dish, arranged on a mound of housemade white and green taglioni pasta. “This is a light and fresh

dish,” declares Speziali, “with the clean taste of the clams enhanced— but never overpowered—by a delicate white wine clam sauce. It is redolent with the aroma and tastes of the seaside and the easy living of the season.” “A summer vacation for your mouth” is how Chef Mareyja Sisbarro at Brockton Villa describes her Sesame Crusted Ahi Salad. Salads are an easy go-to for warm weather eating, but “salad” doesn’t have to mean boring, as this far-fromordinary one so deliciously exemplifies. “It’s green and light, and the generous portion of seared-rare ahi adds high-quality protein that is substantial, but not heavy,” the chef continues. “Plus, there’s a lot of flavor and texture going on in this salad— grapefruit slices, edamame, snap peas, avocado and Kaiware (sprouted daikon radish seeds), all splashed with homemade Green Goddess dressing and garnished with watermelon radish as a nod to what is probably summer’s most iconic fruit.” According to Alex Emery, Executive Chef at The MED Oceanview Restaurant, nothing tastes better than a chilled soup on a warm day, especially when it is an upgraded interpretation of a classic. In his King Crab Cucumber Gazpacho, he switches up the usual tomato red for a vibrant green and the result is a refreshing take on a classic favorite, made substantial by the addition of succulent king crab meat and the balancing saltiness of salmon roe. “To me, this gazpacho has all the flavor elements of the season,” Emery points out. “Cucumber is a summer crop and has the added advantage of helping to keep the body temperature down, so it really does cool you off— hence, the saying ‘cool as a cucumber!’ I add kale and other greens for a healthy combination and meadow-green hue that stays bright

to the last drop. Touches of lemon juice, lemon fluid gel and lemonflavored butterfly sorrel raise the refreshing factor with citrus undertones. This is my idea of what summer tastes—and looks—like.” “When I think of the taste of summer, stone fruit immediately comes to mind,” muses Jason Knibb, NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar Executive Chef. “Cherries, peaches, apricots, plums and nectarines all are in season, plentiful and at their juiciest and sweetest. Summertime is berry time, as well. Although great to eat on their own, these fruits add exceptional layers of flavors when prepared with certain proteins, especially poultry.” This is evident in Knibbs’ Duck Confit with Stone Fruit, in which pickled cherries, blueberries, apricot, mustard seed mostarda, and fennel and arugula balance the richness of the duck with sweet and acidic profile of the fruit. The taste of summer in a pizza? Definitely, if it is a Summer Squash and Goat Cheese Pizza with a nod to the season right in its name! At Bella Vista Social Club & Caffé, the oceanview patio on the cliffs above Torrey Pines is the ideal setting for enjoying this made-to-be-shared pie, especially during Happy Hour on a balmy evening. Chef/co-owner Nico Caniglia cites the bright flavors of the toppings as being summer crave-worthy: “The beautiful yellow squash looks like sunshine, and the juicy red tomatoes are one of the season’s most delicious offerings. The goat cheese is light and refreshing. Pair the pizza with a Burrata, Spinach and Heirloom Tomato Salad, and it becomes a meal that totally fits on summer’s social calendar.” Lastly, for fish lovers, the taste of summer has to be that of the local California halibut that is caught off of the Baja coast. Its mild taste and

flaky texture make it a regional favorite and Chef Percy Oani of The Shores masters it in his Local Halibut with Cauliflower Couscous. “This dish promotes better bathing suit bodies for summer,” the chef jokes. “Riced fresh cauliflower takes the place of the traditional wheat couscous, and the local halibut itself is naturally low in fat, so the dish is healthy and light without the heaviness of starch, cream or butter. But that doesn’t mean lacking in flavor, by any means! Lemon tarragon-infused chimichurri enhances and excites the freshness of the halibut, and the dish will leave you feeling well satiated, but not stuffed.” In defining the “taste of summer,” we use words such as “light,” “refreshing,” “beachy” and “fruity.” The flavor of the season is found in the freshness of patio dining cooled by gentle breezes and warmed by good company.

And when you put it all together, r e m m u s f o e t s a t the is: delicious!

MAGNIFICENT ORCHIDS One of the most popular houseplants of all time PHOTOGRAPHY BY NOUSHIN NOURIZADEH ORCHIDS BY BRIDGET’S BLOOMS

10 FUN ORCHID FACTS 1. Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants. They have also been around the longest as they are one of the oldest flowers in existence. 2. There are more than 25,000 documented orchid species throughout the world. This means the number of orchids on the planet is four times the number of birds and four times the number of mammals! 3. The smallest orchid is the size of a dime. This amazing orchid is small enough to fit in a doll house! 4. The vanilla orchid (and its vanilla bean) is the only commercially grown orchid crop (Vanilla planifolia). These orchids are yummy enough to eat and cook with! 5. Orchids have the tiniest seeds in the world. This makes them a challenge to grow and cultivate. They take forever to sprout and actually turn into a plant! Growing orchids from seeds is only for the patient and very green-thumbed. 6. There can be up to three million seeds in a single orchid seedpod. You’ll never see them though,

because they are the size of a speck of dust and are only visible under a microscope. They require contact with a particular fungus to germinate and grow. 7. It takes patience to grow an orchid. The plant’s first flowers won’t appear until at least five to seven years after germination. The houseplants you find in stores are often a decade old. 8. Some orchid flowers bloom for mere hours, while others last up to half a year. Phaleanopsis orchids are versatile enough to last in a cut flower arrangement longer than most. 9. Orchid flowers always grow upside down when mature. The orchid can have enough blooms to be heavy enough for it to hang down. 10. Orchid plants can live to be up to 100 years old. ✲

GUT FEELING Tricks to satisfy cravings, keep your system in shape and shake up your pantry BY KELSEY TAYLOR

It’s time for mindfulness when it comes to what you put into your body! Read up on these tricks to clean up your diet without missing out. We’ve compiled a list of tasty, not-too-grueling shortcuts to tame the bloat and convince even the laziest, bedridden Netflix bingers to use these tricks.

SEE YA, SWEET TOOTH!

Two words: Energy bites! Late-night cravings aren’t going to subside, so trade your Ben & Jerry’s for these sweet treats instead. Not only are they vegan and gluten- and dairy-free, but they won’t let down the nut lovers out there.

CARBS, DAIRY AND MEAT CUTS

You don’t have to be afraid of carbs, but incorporating a low-starch veggie substitute every once in awhile is a healthy balance that also allows you to get more fiber! Noodle substitutes, such as “zoodles” can include spaghetti squash or zucchini. If you don’t have a spiralizer on hand, you can buy pre-packaged zoodles. Add vegan pesto for an excellent dairy-free alternative to traditional pesto or chickpeas or meatless meatballs to make it heartier. We’ve given you some tricks to tweak your dietary routine, so hit the kitchen rather than the drive-thru and try something new! ✲

Add ginger to your tea.

Chia seeds can be added to oatmeal, smoothies or even yogurt.

CLEAN UP TIME

Try swapping your salt for spices like za’atar, paprika or cumin. It can be tempting to dump salt all over your entree, but these spices will add colorful flavors to your dish, while still fulfilling your salt cravings. Added bonus, these spices won’t wreak havoc on your arteries.

DE-BLOAT

There’s nothing worse than a bloated stomach right before you’re about to put on a fitted dress. The gas that comes after isn’t fun, either! Incorporate these foods into your diet to help tame the bloat: • Ginger – incorporate in tea • Cucumber – pair with hummus for a healthy snack • Fennel – add to a salad • Asparagus – roast as a side • Dandelion greens – toss into a soup or mix into eggs • Apple cider vinegar – use with homemade salad dressings • Lemon – marinade your meats Fiber-rich snacks like whole grains, flax, vegetables, fruits, beans, seeds and crackers will help circulate things in your gut. Fats like avocado, nuts and coconut oil are all “good” fats that can also regulate your gut!

SUPERFOOD, SUPER YOU!

Superfoods are foods that are nutrient-dense. Chia seeds are an anti-inflammatory, and conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and Celiac disease are all related to inflammatory diseases. It’s been said that chia seeds have more Omega-3s than salmon, and they can serve as a thickener in recipes because they’re incredibly absorptive. Try them out in your muesli, oatmeal, smoothies and granola! Turmeric—that spice that gives yellow curry its vibrant color—is a superfood, too. It also fights inflammation and keeps blood sugar levels steady. A cousin to ginger, it can boost your body’s natural antioxidant capacity.

IN LIVING COLOR

Breathtaking artistry in all colors of the rainbow BY BRIANNE BROWN ROY G. BIV is a name many learned in elementary school. A simple mnemonic device to help you remember the colors of the rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet— these are the primary colors that make up our world. But which one in particular inspires our favorite artists and their respective works?

While virtually every color of the rainbow can be found in these paintings, green pervades many of them, subtly underscoring works such as Coup D’etat and taking a front-row seat in Venice Moon Dogg E. Sol Emphasis

IAN ELY PHOTOGRAPHY Perhaps more than any one color in particular, Ian Ely’s remarkable photographs are notable for their contrast of many colors. His Sol Emphasis, for example, showcases a litany of colors, from the purples and pinks of the sky above to the yellows and oranges shining through to the blues and greens of the water. “To me, a blue sky is boring,” Ely says. “I prefer an aspect of drama, a contrasting variety of colors.”

Southern California

MARTIN LAWRENCE GALLERIES Gallery mainstay Kerry Hallam is on display at Martin Lawrence Galleries in La Jolla, and it’s hard to imagine a Hallam work without thinking in shades of blue. Featuring windswept seascapes and iconic landscapes via acrylic on canvas or hand-pulled serigraph, pieces such as Southern California feature the blues of the ocean which subtly transition to the blue hues of the mountains beyond. Other Hallam works include unique nautical charts with acrylic atop vintage maps. Approaches to San Diego is one of these one-of-a-kind works, and the blues of the San Diego Bay offset against the inset maps of Mission Bay and the Gulf of Santa Catalina evoke relaxing ocean breezes and perfect California summers. Martin Lawrence Galleries, 1111 Prospect Street, Suite 140, La Jolla 858.551.1122 martinlawrence.com

ART AUCTION Art auctions date back centuries and were originally how art was traded amongst the elite members of society. Since the 1970s, contemporary art markets have been impacted by art auctions. The classic rule remains, however, that if you really want a truly remarkable piece of art, you must be willing to pay more than anyone else. A number of traditions are observed during art auctions, but they generally follow the same process: art pieces are listed in a brochure that promotes the artwork up for auction; art is divided into lots; you will receive a bidder’s card that you will use to bid or outbid other attendees; and a buyer’s premium—a percentage of the final sale price—is added to your bid to cover costs such as shipping and handling, paperwork, etc. Don’t miss the Martin Lawrence Galleries West Coast art auction in Costa Mesa, CA, on September 29. This is a superb opportunity for seasoned collectors and novices alike to acquire rare offerings and truly unique pieces. For more information, visit martinlawrence.com.

FLOWER POWER Summer’s top 10 garden blooms

Summer’s hot days are now upon us. But it’s not too late to fill pots and borders with hot weather flowers that will pump out color all season long. The key to success will be to keep these plants wellwatered while they root. Once they are established, they should never be allowed to completely dry out. 72

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

BY ARMSTRONG GARDEN CENTERS

Remember to work in an organic planting mix and starter fertilizer at planting time. The mix will improve drainage and help to retain water and nutrients. If you are establishing in containers, use an organic potting soil straight from the bag along with starter food. Colorful plants need plenty of nutrients to keep producing blooms. For non-stop color, feed monthly with an organic bloom food. The middle number of the NPK will be the highest of the three. It’s phosphorus that promotes flowering. Although many of the flowers listed below will tolerate drought, regular water is needed for the best blooms. They also need well-draining soil—never allow these plants to be in soggy soil. Many stalwarts—including geranium, salvia, coneflower and zinnia—have exciting new cultivars. Don’t miss them.

■ COMMUNITY

First, Cora Vinca is an easy-care heat lover. It blooms profusely and needs no deadheading. Cheery flowers in a compact form make it a perfect border plant. Daylilies are classic summer flowers and are virtually carefree. For season-long color, choose reblooming varieties. The latest hybrids have large, wide-petaled flowers in rich colors from sherbet-toned blends to rich purple, red, pumpkin, near-black and more. Coneflowers have undergone a remarkable transformation. Just about every color is available now, with the exception of blue tones. But you’ll find pink, pristine white, bright yellow, orange, fire-engine red and, of course, purple. There are also doubles and pom-pom forms that don’t even look like coneflowers! Another flower that’s undergone a major makeover is gaillardia. Choose from bright yellows, clear oranges, reds, rust tones, apricot and more. Gaillardia ‘Fanfare,’ with tiny trumpet flowers instead of petals in red, orange and yellow, is sensational. Cosmos, with its country-simple flowers is a fool-proof summer bloomer. You get your choice of heights with different varieties. Cosmos can contribute charm to any garden style. Pure white cosmos are often used to fill boxwood parterres in Provence—a sophisticated, yet carefree choice. Salvias (there seem to be zillions) are the quintessential Mediterranean-climate summer bloomer. If you haven’t already introduced yourself to the world of salvias, do it by growing a stunning new one: Amistad. It has sensational spikes of rich, royal purple flowers with black bracts on a well-behaved four-foot plant.

Zinnia

Pass on the large flowered zinnias and plant the super Profusion series. These award-winning, mounding plants will be covered with 1 1/2-inch flowers right through the dog days of summer. You won’t find the complete zinnia color range, but there are enough choices to give your garden pizazz. With the exception of English types and a few others, lavenders will produce spikes of color summer into winter. Look for the new Spanish and French varieties with very prominent “ears” in contrasting colors. Don’t overwater them while they become established. If you’re not sure, it’s better not to water. Geraniums will never go out of style because they’re simply fantastic in California gardens. There are terrific new kinds called interspecifics—hybrids of zonal and ivy geraniums. Two series are available: Calliope and Caliente. They have gorgeous foliage, large sturdy blooms and a pleasing, mounding habit.

Geraniums

Marigolds

Lastly, consider the lowly marigold. If you want a jolt of hot-toned color, marigolds can’t be beat. For a fresh look, don’t mass them and don’t line a flowerbed with them. Simply plant them in threes or fives in a mixed border. Marigolds make mixed flower borders zing. There’s no better time than now to try out some new versions of traditional classics and old standbys. You’ll love seeing the bright blooms all summer long. ✲

NO FORK, NO PROBLEM!

A HANDS-ON APPROACH TO SUMMER DINING Summer is back and we’re digging in hands-first BY EMILY BOOTH l PHOTOS BY RONEIL CHAVEZ

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

Behold, the season of fun is upon us! Longer days and warmer nights give way to summer breeze and culinary ease. The cuisine we love becomes as playful as the season itself, as finger food and shared plates return to the party. Jump into summer and ditch the silverware for these forkless favorites.

1. SPICE & RICE It’s not every day that you get to eat Thai food with your hands, but the Golden Moon Appetizer is a chance to do just that. Wrapped in egg paper and fried to golden brown perfection, these playful little pockets are packed with curry powder, minced chicken, potato, peas and carrots. Couple these with a side of cucumber salad for that perfect curry cool down.

2

2. THE BROKEN YOLK Breakfast is perhaps the best time of day to give the fork the back seat. Set the day’s tone with a fun approach to food with this Waffle Sandwich. Yep, you read that correctly. Fluffy scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese and applewood-smoked bacon are pressed between two Belgian waffles to create a handheld phenomenon. Dunk it in some maple syrup for that perfect combination of sweet and savory. This is how you rise and shine.

3. ELIXIR Sunny SoCal days call for food that suits it, like the Mediterranean Panini. Get your hands on this pressed sandwich, featuring sautéed zucchini and red peppers, hummus, creamy feta cheese and Kalamata olives. Perfecting the delicate balance of light and rich, this handheld can easily be enjoyed on the go, or on San Diego’s own version of the Med. Pro tip: Keep your other hand company with a cold-pressed juice.

3

4. AMERICANA The slider just might be the ultimate handheld food, but this version of it might have you reaching a little faster. These Pastrami Sliders are built upon savory roasted garlic rolls and are bound together by tangy grain mustard and melted swiss cheese. A side of black pepper rye au jus seals the deal, creating the perfect fusion of flavors at this fork-free party. Grip, dip, repeat.

Forks aren’t invited to pizza parties and that’s just a fact. Sorry, we don’t make the rules, we just obey them. This Neapolitan-style Pizza Vegetariana will have you licking your fingers and praising the pizza gods. Cooked in a woodfire oven, this masterpiece is topped with grilled red peppers, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, soft mozzarella and fresh basil. This is what hands were made for.

7

6. GIRARD’S GOURMET “The bigger, the better” has never been truer than when it comes to sandwiches, and the Grilled Gerard Gourmet Special is living proof of such a claim. Turkey and bacon are piled high on grilled Italian bread along with all the fixings. Tomatoes, roasted red peppers, avocado, sprouts, mayo and provolone turn this dish into a two-handed situation. Bring your best appetite.

7. POMODORO

6

You’re never too old for fried finger-food. Case in point? The classic Calamari Fritti. Lightly breaded then deep fried, a simple combination of squid and zucchini creates a playful, but sophisticated dish—no cutlery necessary. A squeeze of fresh lemon and a side of marinara make this antipasti a top-pick on our list. Save room for the secondi!

You don’t need an excuse to eat with your hands, but we gave you a few anyway. Get a little dirty and dig into the handheld lifestyle this summer with laid back eats and bite-sized treats. Whether you grip, grab, dunk or dip, don’t forget to have fun with it!

Petco Park: San Diego Padres Opening Day Ceremony

Spend a day enjoying America’s favorite pastime in one of three SoCal stadiums BY CHRISTINA ORLOVSKY PAGE

Summer days call for time spent outside, and no summer would be complete without taking in a ballgame. Luckily for Southern California sports fans, there are three Major League Baseball (MLB) teams hitting it out of the park right in our backyard. From the modern marvel that is Petco Park in San Diego’s East Village to iconic Dodger Stadium and Angels Stadium in between, you don’t have to travel far to enjoy America’s favorite pastime. Whether you root, root, root for the home team, or stay true to your hometown club, a day at the park is always a good day. Here’s a look inside three stadiums worth a day trip.

LA Dodgers

PETCO PARK

DODGER STADIUM

The newest local ballpark by four decades, Petco Park is a destination in itself. Recognized by USA Today in 2016 as the “undisputed best ballpark in baseball,” the stadium represents everything that makes San Diego America’s Finest City. From spectacular skyline views to unique architecture that incorporates historic buildings into modern design, the home of the San Diego Padres offers so much more than sports to its visitors. Take in the full Petco Park experience by visiting the Western Metal Supply Co. building, a registered historic site that dates back to 1909 and now houses a team store, bar and restaurant, hospitality suites and rooftop seating.

Home to San Diego’s National League rivals to the north, Dodger Stadium is the third-oldest stadium in MLB, behind Boston’s Fenway Park and Chicago’s Wrigley Field. It’s also the only ballpark in baseball to have never increased its seating capacity throughout its history. An iconic landmark in the City of Angels, Dodger Stadium has earned its spot as one of L.A.’s most popular tourist destinations.

Home of the San Diego Padres | Opened: 2004 Seating capacity: 40,209

Elsewhere, Petco Park’s unique features include a variety of experiences added in 2018, including the Breitbard Hall of Fame—originally housed in the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park—which highlights accomplished professional, collegiate and amateur athletes throughout San Diego’s sports history; the San Diego Section of CIF Baseball and Softball, a showcase of local high school baseball and softball teams; the Virtual Reality Experience, which allows fans to hit as many virtual home runs as possible in 90 seconds; and The Pirch Beach, the stadium’s newest group space, inspired by the local beach culture. Fans’ furry friends can even get in on the action in The Barkyard, which features five semi-private dog-friendly viewing areas, while families can enjoy their own mini MLB game with their littlest leaguers at Park at the Park. Stadium Eats: Not your average ballpark nachos! Petco Park’s most popular menu item is Seaside Market’s Burgundy Tri-Tip Nachos, topped with Diego Queso, barbecue sauce, sour cream and green onions. Some of the city’s most popular culinary institutions are also in residence, including Hodad’s, Phil’s BBQ and Carnitas’ Snack Shack. Fun Fact: Beer here! Move over, concession lines: This May, Petco Park launched a new seat-based beer-hawking service—the first of its kind in California in 35 years. Choose from seemingly endless craft beer options—a whopping 86 beers are available for purchase!

Home of the Los Angeles Dodgers | Opened: 1962 Seating capacity: 56,000

“Nothing says Los Angeles like the extraordinary views of the city from the Top of the Park at Dodger Stadium,” says Janet Marie Smith, Dodger Senior Vice President of Planning and Development. “To the north, beautiful Elysian Park is in the foreground and the San Gabriel mountains beyond, while to the south, one can enjoy sweeping views of the downtown skyline. On a clear day, you can see the ocean as well as the Hollywood sign. The distinctive 1960s pastel seat colors not only evoke the colors of the Los Angeles sunset, but are a reminder of the mid-century modern architecture that defines the coming of age of the City of Angels.” Seats range from $14 to premium offerings in the exclusive Lexus Dugout Club. Family-friendly fun in the form of movie nights and bobblehead giveaways make Dodger Stadium entertaining for folks of all ages. Additionally, unique food options including a chicken and waffle sandwich; churro cake; and Cheeto-lote (roasted sweet corn rubbed with chipotle lime mayo and dusted with Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, cotija cheese and tajin seasoning) satisfy the food cravings of a diehard fan base that dates back six decades. Stadium Eats: Hot dog! “The Dodger Dog is a staple, a timeless classic and part of the traditional ballpark experience that our fans love,” says Lon Rosen, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. “Over the years, the menu at Dodger Stadium has expanded to include gourmet dishes that suit many palates and tastes, but the number-one-selling food item remains the Dodger Dog.” Fun Fact: The Dodgers have had only 17 rainouts in Dodger Stadium history, with the last one on April 17, 2000. The team’s current run of 1,486 consecutive home games without a rainout is a club record. ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

Angels Stadium

ANGELS STADIUM

Home of the Los Angeles Angels | Opened: 1966 Seating capacity: 45,477 After Dodger Stadium, Angels Stadium, or “The Big A,” is the fourth-oldest stadium in MLB, constructed in the 1960s specifically for the American League Angels, who had been playing at Dodger Stadium. It was renovated to become a multi-sport facility in 1979 to accommodate the Los Angeles Rams, but has since returned to functioning as a baseball-only stadium. Paying homage to its location in Anaheim and proximity to Disneyland, Angels Stadium features a large statue of Mickey Mouse outfitted in the Angels logo outside the home plate gate and another inside the stadium representing the last time the Angels hosted the MLB AllStar Game in 2010. Boasting recent technical upgrades, Angels Stadium now houses the third-largest right field video board in MLB, featuring 7.7 million LED lights. Home to a handful of historic milestones—four Angels no-hitters, Rod Carew’s 3,000th hit, Reggie Jackson’s 500th home run, Don Sutton’s 300th win and Albert Pujols’ 600th home run—this season, the stadium also features an Albert Pujols home run tracker beyond the centerfield rock waterfall, where fans can track the all-star’s progress as he climbs the all-time home run leaderboard. Stadium Eats: Get cheesy! One of the most popular dining spots at Angels Stadium is The Big Cheese, which specializes in unique grilled cheese sandwiches. Fans can also change up their dining options at The Change-Up Kitchen, which features a revolving menu each month, with choices influenced by different players. Fun Fact: “The Big A” message board in the stadium’s parking lot has long been used to celebrate each of the club’s victories. After each win, both home and away, the 70-foot-wide halo atop The Big A is illuminated.

{ DOG ABOUT TOWN }

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Summertime is the funner time to be a dog around San Diego BY SKIPPER LEMLIN

COURTESY DALE PORTER, LOEWS SURF DOG COMPETITION

HEY EVERYBODY, IT’S ME, SKIPPER, your Dog About Town, working on my tan and doing some summer chillin’! To humans, “Dog days of summer” might mean long, lazy days with not much going on, but for us convivial canines, it means time for plenty of fun in the sun at beaches and dog parks. It means lots of opportunities for socializing and strutting our stuff at benefit events to help other dogs find homes as amazing as those that we have.

Loews Surf Dog- Buddy

94

ABOUTTOWNMAGAZINES.COM

SURF’S UP! Did you know that the San Diego area is home to TWO world-famous dog surfing competitions? (Yes, dog surfing is a thing!) At the Imperial Beach Surf Dog Competition on July 28, approximately 70 surFUR dogs will ride the waves and raise funds for the San Diego Humane Society. I’ll be there next to the IB Pier along with about 3,000 other spectators, cheering on the competitors who always seem to TOTALLY love surfing. Then, on September 9, the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) sponsors the 13th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon at Del Mar Dog Beach, where about 80 dogs will be shredding those waves and benefiting the orphaned pets at the Center. It looks like so much fun that I might take some surfing or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) lessons given by SoCal Surf Dogs throughout the summer, with class fees also helping HWAC.

IS EVERYBODY YAPPY? At Yappy Hours, you’ll find me schmoozing with Schnauzers, lapping libations with Labs and having a bite of biscuit with Bichons. My favorite YH happens every Tuesday from 3–7 p.m. on the patio at Moray’s, at the tropically-inspired Catamaran Resort on beautiful Mission Bay. While my human and her friends sip specialty cocktails like “Greyhound” and “Salty Dog,” I can munch complimentary treats and hang out with all my fur pals. You can also find me downtown at the Patio Marketplace at Hotel Republic on Thursday evenings from 4–7, where I can quaff “puppy beer” (homemade broth), or in Point Loma for Woofer Wednesdays at The Wine Pub, which raises funds for Rover’s Retreat, a great local rescue organization for homeless, sick, abandoned or elderly dogs.

Leash Your Fitness Yoga

IT’S ME, SKIPPER

WORK IT! To maintain my handsome physique, I keep in shape by running on the beach and doing the occasional exercise class. San Diego County has three 24-hour leash-free dog beaches, and I’ll be “hunting” kelp and chasing my ball almost every day at Ocean Beach Dog Beach or Fiesta Island on Mission Bay. Coronado also has a great oceanfront Dog Beach at the very northern end, abutting the Navy base. At Del Mar’s North Beach, aka Dog Beach, dogs must be leashed in the summer, but from Labor Day until June 15, it is designated leash-free. At Leash Your Fitness classes, the brainchild of personal trainer Dawn Celapino, my human and I work out together. We do yoga (I’m so good at Shivasana, and of course, Downward Dog), run obstacle courses and sometimes do circuit training, but it is always fun together.

COSPLAY ComicCon might be a big deal for humans in San Diego, but for me, I’m all about PawmiCon, held at Hazard Center on July 15 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. The family-friendly event includes carnival games, treats and goodies for both dogs and humans. The best part is the PAWSplay Costume Contest when I can dress like the superhero I know I am! All funds raised go to the pets and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center.

So grab your best buddy and join me about town. And, even if you aren’t fortunate enough to share your life with a canine companion, come anyhow, and maybe you’ll even find some puppy love. ✲

LIVENING UP LA JOLLA Covo’s Augie Saucedo brings a fun, new flavor to town

BY EMILY BOOTH l PHOTOS BY NOUSHIN NOURIZADEH

Born and raised just outside of Los Angeles, Chef Augie Saucedo has long been woven into the culinary fabric of Southern California. Having developed an interest in food at an early age, he wasted no time getting into culinary school and working his way up the ranks. Chef Augie now leads the way at La Jolla’s exciting new concept, Covo, where he’s mixing things up in one of San Diego’s most iconic neighborhoods.

What has been one of your most important roles so far? I worked as the Executive Sous Chef at the San Diego Convention Center, which was a strategic move for me. I knew if I could learn how to cater 10,000-person parties, I could set myself apart from everyone else. Looking back, that position really advanced my career.

Mentors or inspirations? Chef Joe Cochran was my first, and he opened so many doors for me here in San Diego. But I’m also very close to Chef Bernard Guillas, who took my career to the next level. He taught me all about true French cuisine, as well as how to be perceived
