Three months after 26/11 attack convict Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab's execution, Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was hanged in a top-secret operation on Saturday morning inside Delhi’s Tihar jail. Afzal Guru, who was convicted of plotting the 2001 terror attack on the Indian Parliament, was hanged at 8 am inside Delhi's Tihar Jail and was buried inside the prison complex soon after his execution. Guru spent over 10 years on death row in the Tihar prison and was hanged in an operation shrouded in secrecy. Guru was informed about his
hanging after a death warrant was issued by a Delhi court. There were eight people, including a doctor, a magistrate and some jail officials, present when he was hanged and buried quietly soon after the hanging. After he was woken up at 5 am, he offered prayers
before calmly approaching the noose, officials said. A Muslim cleric was also present during his hanging. The mercy plea of 43year-old convict, who was sentenced to death in 2002 by a special court and later upheld by the Supreme Court in 2005, was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee a few days back, Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said. On December 13, 2001, five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine persons. Rupanjana Dutta, Associate Editor, Asian Voice, CB Patel, Publisher/Editor, Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar interviewing PM David Cameron at 10 Downing Street
Rupanjana Dutta David Cameron will be visiting India with his trade mission, within a week's time, in an attempt to strengthen the IndoBritish trade and investment ties and address claims that visa restrictions are discouraging Indian students to come to Britain to study. This is Mr Cameron's second visit within 30 months of his last trip, and taken most of the British & Indians by awe. Perhaps because this is the first time in recent history, a British PM has ignored the usual protocol, and is going back to India, before the Indian Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) has made a return visit to Britain, since Cameron's first official tour. and about in our constituencies. I am very fortunate as I live in the constituency I represent and can get to Parliament by simply getting on the tube.
Lee was first elected to Parliament for the Ilford North constituency in the General Election of May 2005. Lee has lived in Redbridge for most of his life and was educated locally. He is married to Estelle. Lee's voluntary service included working for Victim Support, the Barkingside Youth Centre Committee and the Acorns appeals committee at Whipps Cross Hospital and being a governor of local schools. Lee served as a member of the Commons Health Select Committee and the Transport Select Committee. He was PPS from June to December 2010 to Philip Hammond the Secretary of State for Transport. In January 2011 he joined the Speakers panel. He was appointed as PPS to Chris Grayling as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in 2012. What inspired you to stand for Parliament? I wanted to put something back and help the local community. My back ground is that I worked for a major international charity. I realised that I could do more. I got involved in local politics and was elected as a councillor. I then decided to try to get elected as an MP. What are your proudest achievements in politics? The progress we have made in raising the issue of education and training for young people who have special needs. I have worked closely with The National Autistic Society which is a first rate organisation. I am also a patron of Autism Awareness Campaign
What are your long term goals? If I have the honour to be reelected I wish to carry on representing my constituents to the very best of my ability and work as hard as I can to ensure that their interests are protected. I understand the modern pressures faced by individuals and families and want to be someone in a position to help. If you were Secretary General of the United Nations, what one thing would you change? I would like to make the United Nations far more proactive on the issues relating to human rights. We can see that in countries such as Sri Lanka, Burma and Syria people are being oppressed. These are genuine concerns that the international community should be doing much more to address.
UK. Please tell us about your current position? Last Year I was appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Chris Grayling the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. What has been the biggest obstacle in your career? This has to be the bureaucracy and red tape that slows progress and improvement. It takes far too long to make necessary changes that would help to improve the quality of life and make things just a bit easier for my constituents. Who has been the biggest influence on your career to
date? My wife. What is the best thing about your current role? There is the opportunity that I have a chance to make a difference and to help my constituents. It may not be on every occasion a major issue

with India, which is now one of the fastest growing economiespossibly explaining PM's second official visit within this short span of time. It is also speculated that perhaps the PM will also attempt to reinforce British defence exports following New Delhi's choice of France's Rafale over the Euro-fighter Typhoon. According to a report in FT on January 10th 2013, the deal is yet to be
attempting to promote sales of other defence and civil equipment such as helicopters and to encourage Indian groups such as Tata to reinforce their investments in the UK. In a one to one exclusive interview with CB Patel, Publisher/Editor of Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar and Rupanjana Dutta, Associate Editor, Asian Voice, PM Cameron discussed the agenda on his much anticipated trip to India. Though it is not
may be off his table at the moment. When asked about the aim of this trade mission, PM Cameron enthusiastically said, “This is my third visit in the last 6 years, to build on my previous visits. What I want to build on is the Indian community here in the UK and in India. In terms of cultural links, business links, university links, there is a lot more we can do, particularly in small and medium size enter-
but if through my efforts I can help and support even just one person I feel that I have fulfilled the role. And the worst? Very long hours. As MPs we spend far too much time confined in Westminster talking at each other and not enough out
prises. There are fantastic businesses here in the UK, people who have real connections with India and love Britain too and I am taking them along. There is a lot of confidence, lot of energy, (and the aim is) to make lot of links (between) businesses here and in India” Of course, it is apparent one of the other aim for his forthcoming visit to India is to usher Indian students to Britain, who after the withdrawal of the Post Study Work (PSW) visa scheme have started choosing Universities in countries like Australia and the US over Britain. Official data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency show student enrolments in British universities fell from 39,090 in 2010-11 to 29,900 in 2011-12. Overall, the growth in foreign student numbers rose by only 2 per cent in 201112 – well under half the 5.5 per cent recorded in the previous year. Jo Beall, director of education at the British Council, said the figures, suggested that “changes to UK visa regulations may have dissuaded many students from applying”. Discussing immigration issues, as per the questions of our Editors, PM Cameron told Asian Voice, “We (the Coalition government) should not give of any vibes of anti

contribution that immigrants have made and continue to make in the UK. There are many people of Indian origin, who also want proper control. In terms of welcoming foreign students, there is no limit to Indian students coming to the UK, to British Universities and study here. All that they
have to have is a place (in a University) and basic knowledge of English communication. There is also no limit to the number of (foreign) students who can stay and work in Britain, in a graduate job, after finishing their degree” Continued on page 7

Terrorist goes to the gallows Afzal Guru, the mastermind behind the December 13, 2001terrorist attack on India’s Parliament was sent to the gallows last Saturday, February 9, his body interred in Delhi’s Tihar jail. The law took its course. He was sentenced to death by the Delhi High Court and the verdict was confirmed by the Supreme Court. His clemency appeal was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee, who a few months earlier, had turned down a similar appeal from Kasab, one of the terrorists involved the Mumbai 26/11 bombings and shootings. Justice was done and seen to be done. The Indian judicial is often slow but it delivers. The death penalty in India is a sentence of last resort for crimes that are horrific in nature. The Indian are slowly coming to recognize that their country is in a state of undeclared war. It is a type of conflict new to history. The assailants may be non-state operatives but their han-
dlers and wire pullers form part of the statecraft of governments working through the mechanisms of a formal state. It has long been accepted that Saudi Arabia plays a major role as an incubator and funder of Islamist terror, and that Pakistan trains and harbours terrorist groups to promote its messianic Islalamist fantasies. Afzal Guru was an ooperative of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, while the plan to bomb India’s Parliament was brainchild of another Pakistani outfit called the Jaish-e-Mohammed. Muslim organizations in India who have demonstrated on the streets of Delhi, Lucknow and other cities in favour of Afzal on the ground that he didn’t receive a fair trial have done themselves and the community, they claim to represent, no favours at all. India will take proper heed of this unacceptable behavior.
Protecting Indian freedoms from extortionists The recent uproar over the invitation to novelist Salman Rushdie by the organizers of the Jaipur Literary Festival, and the refusal of the West Bengal government to allow him to attend the Kolkata Book Fair, plus the initial ban of Kamal Haasan’s film Vishwapooram, not speak of the fatwa issued by the Grand Mufti of Srinagar against a Kashmiri women’s pop group, are a wake-up call for India. In every case, the agitation was led by Muslim clergy, with Muslim mobs on call to supply the violence. The only silver lining to this dark cloud of creeping intolerance was the Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s firm action against the Mufti’s followers. Vishwaroopam was eventually released after Kamal Haasan agreed to cuts dictated by his Muslim critics. Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal Chief Minister and her Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalitha bore the greatest shame in these tawdry episodes. The former for preventing Mr. Rushdie from coming to Kolkata, the latter for her role in the ban imposed on Vishwaroopam. The virus of intolerance keeps spreading. The Shiv Sena, the militant face Hindutva, responds lawlessly to any book, newspaper article, art exhibition or museum artifact that violates its limited cannon. The kindred factions of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, likewise, threatened to break into Delhi art gallery, because some the pictures on display didn’t fit its blinkered sensibility. Emulation by the brain dead has become a national pestilence. The source of the tectonic disturbance that threatens the foundation of the democratic and secular foundations of the Indian polity comes mainly from Islamist forces within the country. That is the unvarnished truth that bears no denial. The decision by the late Rajiv Gandhi to overturn a Supreme Court judgment in the Shah Bano case, which upheld the right of a 70 year old divorce to alimony from her lawyer husband, in favour of Muslim Personal law was an error of catastrophic proportions. Its hydra-headed consequences have plagued the peace of the country ever since. Muslim clergy and mobs have been encouraged to make demands that are brazen and outrageous, with India’s supine politicians giving way to every challenge for fear of losing these vote banks. The short-term interests of the party took precedence over the long-term interests of the nation. It’s enough to make one weep. So when the Bangladeshi novelist Taslima Nasreen
sought asylum in Bengali-speaking Kolkata, the city’s Muslim mobs egged by mullahs took to the streets in an orgy of looting, the Communist-led Left Front state government surrendering in shameful silence, as did the Union government in Delhi; and Ms Nasreen was denied residence in the city. She now resides in Delhi as Kolkata is out of bounds for her. The invitation to Salaman Rushdie to attend the Kolkata Book Fair, the largest event of its type in Asia and one of the largest in the world, thanks to the behind-the- scene machinations of the increasingly odious state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, denied him entry for fear of a public disorder. Blackmail prevailed over civilized literary discourse. Small wonder that the local Telegraph newspaper carried as its banner front-page headline, a single word: “Disgrace”. Disgrace, it assuredly was. There much sanctimonious hand-wringing and breast-beating on censorship and bigotry from some national newspapers, notably the pro-CPI (M) Hindu newspaper, which simultaneously castigated what it chose to describe as the “demonization of Muslims”. To brand legitimate criticism and rightful expressions of concern as “demonization” carries the stink of a mutant McCarthyism. Were the perpetrators of 9/11 in New York men from Mars? Did the killers and bombers of 26/11 descend from outer space? And who were the agents of the 7/7 bombings in London? Not monks from a Trappist monastery, surely. Islamist fiction attributes these events to the dark energy of “Zionist-Hindu” conspirators out to blacken the fair name of Islam, but the time has come to end liberal indulgence of such fun and games. A number of enlightened Indian Muslim voices, such as Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, have condemned the activities of their extremist co-religionists. They well understand how badly this plays with non-Muslim communities in the country. Public alarm at these manifestations of intolerance is spreading. This shall not pass is fast becoming the general mood. Pakistan was created as a homeland for the Subcontinent’s Muslims. The Land of the Pure guarantees the sanctity of sharia, the suppression of infidel minorities and death for blasphemy. Mullahs and mobs in India are best advised to head in that direction - or any other Islamic haven from Saudi Arabia to Egypt and beyond, - for their spiritual and social redemption, and leave benighted India to its own devices...
Time to call Rajapakse regime to account India has walked a tightrope in its dealings with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse. New Delhi has bent backward in its bid to accommodate his government’s concerns and anxieties in the aftermath of civil war and the defeat of the Tamil Tigers. Much water has passed under the bridge since then and no enabling measures to achieve reconciliation have been promulgated. Mr Rajapakse comes out with verbal sweeteners, from time to time, but the ritual has ceased to have any credibility. It’s more of the same: all Sri Lanka’s citizens are equal, he assures international audiences, but viewing the customary practice, some are more equal than others. He must recognize that Sri Lanka’s independence in February 1948, the rights of the country’s Tamil population have been steadily eroded by the governing Sinhalese elite. No accord with constitutionalist Tamil leaders were ever honoured, but with the accession to power of SWRD Bandaranaike a dangerous turn for the worse occurred. The new prime minister brought the lower class Buddhist clergy into play; they in turn brought with them mob power. The centre could not hold and mere anarchy was let loose with Sinhalese thugs looting Tamil businesses and killing innocent Tamils. The destruction of the great Tamil library in Jaffna in 1983 was the straw that broke the camel’s
back and led to the rise of the Tamil Tigers. The recent sacking of Sri Lankan Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranaike following her impeachment by Parliament was a decision that the country’s top court declared null and void. The former Chief Justice of India’s Supreme Court, J.S.Verma, was to have headed a four-member delegation of the International Bar Association to investigate the circumstances of Ms Bandaranaike’s removal from office. Justice Verma and the delegation were denied entry into Sri Lanka. President Rajapakse must understand that it takes two to tango, that India, too, has its domestic compulsions, notably the mounting anger in Tamil Nadu at his cavalier treatment of the insecurities and anxieties within the Sri Lankan Tamil community. His rejection of Tamil autonomy is a wake-up call to India to cast aside illusions about Mr Rajapakse credentials as a conciliator... The pity is that the Sri Lankan President has just completed a visit to the sacred Buddhist sites in Bihar including Bodh Gaya. Apart from ritual prayers, what has he imbibed of the spirit Buddha sought to inculcate in his followers? Precious little, it would appear. President Rajapakse is addicted to the intoxicant of unbridled power. But for how long will this inebriation last?

“Our London” Navin Shah
GLA Member for Brent and Harrow
Your local police teams scrapped by the london’s mayor In January this year Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Stephen Greenhalgh commenced Public Consultation meetings in the London Boroughs to have views of Londoners on ‘Police and Crime Plan’. Consultation process has been put in place in the context of the draconian cuts of some 25% proposed by the London’s Mayor in the emergency services including the police and fire. The changes in London’s police service are driven by the cuts rather than improving the quality of the police service. I welcome the consultation programme to engage with residents in each and every Borough of London. However, my experience of the public meetings in Brent and Harrow, hosted by the Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, would suggest that the meetings have been shambolic. The picture for local policing looks grim. S a f e r Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs): The biggest and the most serious casualty as result of the proposed new policing model is the local policing in the area you live. Ken Livingston during his Mayoralty introduced SNTs, in every single ward of London, comprising a team of 6 dedicated officers lead by a Sergeant. The new plan completely dismantles and destroys the local dedicated ward teams. Hugely reduced dedicated police in wards are planned to comprise 1 PC, 1 PCO per ward. A Sergeant
will be shared between unknown number of Wards. The residents have condemned the new SNT model as ‘reactive’ (rather the current ‘proactive’ SNTs). The residents could not see any logic in dismantling the current model which has been successful in tackling antisocial behaviour, reducing the fear of crime and forging better community relations. Closure of Police Stations & Front Counters: In Brent the plan is to close Willesden and Harlesden Police Stations. Harrow would see the Pinner Police Station closed and the police presence at the Civic Centre removed. In addition the Wealdstone Police Station is already closed. Londonwide, some half of the police stations are due to close. At the London Assembly the Mayor gave a commitment that new and better front counters in the locality will be provided before the police stations are closed but at the public meetings the panel including the Deputy Mayor for Policing and senior Met Officers failed to give any such commitment. Police Numbers: At every opportunity the Mayor and his Deputy tell us how there will be more police in London but the figures given by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) don’t stack up. The fact is that compared to 2010 Harrow will end up with 17 less police officers and Brent will see a reduction of 35 police officers. Continued on page 8

As it is Don't Import Caste Divisions into UK
Of Political Power A debate in Parliament this past week about lobbyists – those who try to influence the Government reminded me of a debate I moderated for this paper at the time of the last election. It was the Asian equivalent of Question Time between Keith Vaz (Chairman of the Home Affairs Committee), Dominic Grieve (Attorney General), Sarah Tether (then LibDem Housing Minister). The day before I was at the Neasden mandir where to my surprise there were complaints that politicians turn up at election time, make promises, and then you can’t ever get access. In fact I’ve found these three politicians at least accessible – not necessarily able to wave a magic wand on every case – bit at least coming to and hosting events. So how do you lobby? Well here are some rules: MP’s are generally powerless within Parliament or amongst civil servants. They only have some weight outside Parliament if writing to say, your bank! The reason laws and regulations are in place that their influence can’t do much other than maybe speed up a lazy civil servant who may not have taken your case seriously. Use a group if you can persuade the group to take up your cause. If MPs think there is only one person, then nothing will get done. If they think an entire community may be up in arms, then that’s different. Headache: Cross-lobby between say the Tory councillor who can bug the Labour MP etc. Fear of numbers: Petition – get a load of signatures. Definitely a Facebook and Twitter page on the issue. And then send the tweets you receive – and include the politician in them and maybe a journalists tweet handle too. Don’t know what any of this means – get someone to help you who does. It’s easy. In fact maybe the National Hindu Students Forum should hold seminars on lobbying.
Greed: Let the MP know who have written to his Party leadership, whips office, and Party Chairman to keep them informed about how effective and helpful the MP is going to be on this issue. Publicise: Find from www.parliament.uk which select committee is taking evidence on the issue concerned and submit your evidence to that select committee. Find out the All Party Parliamentary Groups considering the issue and write to all their MP members so you build a coalition. Be specific, to the point and don’t sound crazy. Ie don’t let them discredit you or mark you as irrelevant. Maybe get a professional to write the letter. And make it clear what you are asking for. Do not show anger. Do not rant. Provide chronologies, key persons involved and their titles and contact details on a separate sheet – make their life easier. The Jewish lobby in the US, whose methods I studied as an intern in the US Congress have a simple rule – they don’t care who they work with, Jew or non-Jew, but they do care if you support them. So don’t assume only Indian politicians can help you. But do try to make clear that whoever does help you is helping the community that you carry with you – and get endorsement letters from organisations for your cause. One poor lady came to me after the event almost in tears telling me the story how her daughter had been attacked and one person after another just pushing her from pillar to post. What does she do? Does she write to Asian Voice to take up her cause? Does she go to her council? Does she write to MPs and Councillors? What about Citizens Advice Bureau? The police? The weakest in our community are being maltreated because those in positions of influence are very good at calculating how much power they have. So you have to increase your power. The above approaches help. They create real power or perceived power.

A critically acclaimed Black actor, David Oyelowo has said that he had to move to America to further his career after hitting a glass ceiling in terms of race and class in Britain. This is sad, but perhaps it is true to a very large extent. In India, caste and especially those who are Dalits face more acute hardships and problems for the upward mobility. For centuries, they have been oppressed by the high caste Hindus primarily because of the jobs they were forced to do. Mahatma Gandhi in his earlier years of freedom struggle and defining strategy through peaceful and non-violent means was focussed on the problems of Dalits. He called them Harijans (children of God). In his lifetime, Gandhiji was able to change attitudes of the most of the conservative upper caste Hindus, and to ensure that age-old discrimination is stopped forever. The adequate and ample (as it appeared then) provisions were made in the Indian Constitution, which was adopted by the Parliament prior to the proclamation of the Republic of India, on the 26th January 1950. Reservations of Dalits, were enshrined for ten years in the jobs and the education system. Other provisions were also included, but have this legal framework improved the conditions of the Dalits, let alone the other so called backward castes? The honest answer is sadly no to a very large extent. Constitutions and rules can be altered and twisted by politicians and so called activists to suit their own purposes. The reservation for Dalits for 10 years have not only remained on statute books in India today, but has widened to include over half of the Indian population of 1.2 billion. Besides Dalits, scheduled tribes, scheduled castes, as well as the minorities (Muslims) have been given the legacy of the “reservations”. Mandal Report is a classic example how the country was divided in terms on the caste lines, and still the targeted are suffering the age old hardships and “underclass status”. It has come to my notice that there are groups in Great Britain, notably under the Anti-Caste Discrimination Alliances, who are campaigning to have legislation against class discrimination. The campaigning group, ACDA is far from the reality when they accuse the government that the progress on this issue has been blocked by high caste interests. ACDA should also know that it is completely unhelpful to start dividing communities into progressive and obstructive forces. ACDA claims that “caste discrimination” is prevalent in Hindu and Sikh communities in the UK. This is incorrect.
castes and that is well documented. Muslims, as well as Buddhists also have defined castes within their faith traditions. I'm told that the Muslims have 72 different castes and Kabilas, where inter-marriage is either prohibited or not a common occurrence. 2) Unlike other faith groups very seldom, if any violence has taken place within the Hindu castes. 3) Its true that, there is a caste structure in the classification of communities, but that is not the main culprit for the age-old pains. It is the way the social system has evolved, which is the main cause of today's tragedies. 4) Social engineering has its own limitations, especially if it is created by the government or the establishment.
I would like to bring some facts into this debate:
To illustrate this further, let me narrate what happened 101 years ago regarding Patel's central Gujarat- mainly today's Nadiad and Anand districts. (In Britain today, according to an estimate more than 150,000, and nearer to 200,000 Patels reside, whose ancestral homes are from Kutch, in the north to Umargam at the Southern tip of Gujarat. From Anand and Nadiad districts alone perhaps 80,000, if not more Patels are living in Britain today). The then English (to the average India all British, whether Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish as well as English were ENGLISH), collector of Kaira district called a conference at the pilgrim town of Dakor in 1912, to divide Patels according to some village groupings. Patels in central Gujarat, predominantly through prowess in agriculture had prospered and some villages were progressing through education, and the developments of professions, businesses and commerce. Twelve outstanding villages were Bhadran, Dharmaj, Karamsad, Nadiad, Nar, Ode, Pij, Sojitra, Sunav, Uttarsanda. Vaso and Virsad The Collector succeeded in creating two groups called chha (six) Gam and panch (five) Gam. Imperial powers have their own strategies. For several decades, Patels from these two groups, especially in marriage and other career opportunities suffered due to this divisive groupings. With a large number of them living in Britain and the advantage and their own excellence in education, the younger generation of Patels are very routinely able to find and select spouses from beyond these boundaries, as well as inter-caste marriage is commonly accepted, without any taboo. I dread to speculate what would happen if the proposals of “Anti-Caste Discrimination Alliance” ever become acceptable. As-it-is we have a number of problems due to race, gender and class discrimination. Let us not rush into the fire from the frying pan.
1) Hindus and Sikhs have different

Mind Walking comes to London Award winning, multicultural aerial theatre company BandBazi takes to the road this spring with a poignant study of a man as his mind falters and he is gradually lost to the alternative reality of dementia. Tanika Gupta’s Mind Walking is a warm, humorous and poignant celebration of the life of one extraordinary individual, the enduring love story of a mature couple and the tale of a family coming to grips with a mind as it leaves the present and wanders back into an untold past. Bobby has led a remarkable life. Migrating from India as a young man he found love in the UK with his with wife Moira but as a Parsee, Bobby was expected to marry within the community. His family disowns him and as a result he cuts them, their religion and their culture from his life forever. Then as his mind unravels so too does the truth of the heritage that he has concealed from those around him. As secrets and stories tumble out of Bobby’s mouth, his family starts to ques-
tion their ancestry and shared history. An aerial drama by acclaimed playwright Tanika Gupta, Mind Walking is an intergenerational story of family ties, religious dogma, cultural expectations and the role the past plays in defining the present. The work was first staged in 2011 as a co-production with Q Theatre P r o d u c t i o n s Mumbai. That tour included performances at Delhi International Festival, Jagriti Theatre, Bengaluru Centrestage Festival and the National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai. Tanika Gupta is an acclaimed British playwright and TV dramatist. Mo Luthra Branding Consultant www.moluthra.com The link between celebrities and brands has been around since the beginning of media really. Whether that was radio or television adverts, famous faces and voices have been used to endorse products to the masses. In recent years this dynamic has changed markedly. Rather than just sticking a face with a brand, celebrities now carry much more power and significance. They have affectively pushed their role as mere ‘product shifters’ to actual participants of the business.
‘Power celebrities’ now carry titles such as ‘creative directors’ or ‘brand curators’. The list includes heavy weight names such as Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Victoria Beckham and Beyonce Knowles. This trend started a couple of years back, most notably with Victoria Beckham who became a creative director for Land Rover by helping them add nouveau style to their new Evoque range of vehicles. The question though, do they really have the business and brand sense to add that dimension to a company or is it just a whim to make the celebrities feel good and sell another story for the business? Take for example Beyonce, hot off the heels of her fabulous Super Bowl performance. In October last year she signed a $50 million deal with Pepsi, labelled not an endorsement but a partnership. The deal included the standard commercials and print advertising but it also fea-
tured a fund that will be directed by Beyonce to use creatively as she chooses. Whether that proves any worth to Pepsi will be seen.
In an age where consumers are seeking more transparency from brands, and through social media celebrities are more exposed than ever, these kinds of partnerships aim to add a higher level of authenticity and credibility. The more connected world we live in means the lines between business and popular culture are ever merging.

'Shubh Yatra' Prime Minister Continued from page 2 “I think that these two messages have got lost in all the other things that are happening and I want to get those messages across to Indian students. It was quite right to get rid of those bogus colleges, that were not teaching and were just a form of illegal immigration, but there are 40,000 Indian students still here in the UK. “I am going to make a very clear statement. We want bright Indian students who want to come to the UK and if they want to stay and work in Britain (after completion of degree in graduate level work), they are most welcome to. There are lots of business representatives, university representatives who are coming with us in this visit.” London Mayor Boris Johnson during his last year's visit to India alleged that negative signals on student visas are perhaps being sent by the Coalition ministers. He said it was “crazy that we should be losing India’s top talent” to universities in Australia and the US. Speaking about a possible youth exchange programme, as suggested by Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar, PM Cameron said, “Very interesting thought. We are trying to deepen the relation (with India), and it is certainly a welcoming idea.” When asked about possibilities of showcasing British
Indian cultural talents in India (again as suggested by Asian Voice) Mr Cameron replied with a smile, “The British Council representatives are coming with us to India and they can have a discussion with the Indian Council of Culture.” While Mr Cameron is hopeful of a fruitful meeting with the Indian PM, the Indian ministers are also geared up to welcome the UK delegation. During a recent visit of the Commerce and Industry minister Anand Sharma, he told the reporters present in India House, “there will be substantial outcome from the forthcoming visit of British Prime Minister David Cameron to India later this month.” Sharma who was here to address the investor community said, "We have two incoming high-level visits within few days - in less than 12 days. First President Hollande of France and then Prime Minister Cameron." He said leaders from defence, manufacturing sector, mining, education, retail, banking and financial sectors will form part of his delegation. Describing India's partnership with UK and France as strategic and very important, Sharma added: "Both UK and France are key partners. With UK, we enjoy a special relationship for historical reasons”
"We have a large Indian diaspora (in the UK) and a large number of Indian professionals and Indian students and the exchange embraces diverse sectors, from education to vocational education, to R&D innovation, health care, advance manufacturing, nuclear science and space science...” "With UK we have fairly robust engagement when it comes to institutional linkages, trade and investment. There has been a marginal contraction of trade but that is happening globally because of the difficult economic situation...” The Indian Minister further said: "We have concerns which have affected the investors confidence, flow of capital from one part to the other and also trade” "Still the two-way trade is USD 15 billion. British investment in India is about USD 28 billion. There are more in the pipeline." The Minister noted that India's investments are also very substantial in the UK. "Indian companies are second largest employment provider in the manufacturing sector in the UK." He hopes that as a sequel to opening of FDI in retail, "there will be flow not only of investments but also of technology, modern grading, processing, cold storages, entire cold chain - integrated value chain, not only within the country from farm to kitchen but beyond that". Barrister who failed to pay more than £600,000 in VAT convicted HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigators found that Rohan Pershad, 44, of London had failed to declare or pay £627,839 of VAT for 12 years. Pershad, who practices in London, instead spent the cash on two luxury homes in Surrey and Somerset, and private school fees for his children. Pershad, pictured, was deregistered for VAT by HMRC in February 2000 following a history of failure to submit tax returns and to tell HMRC (formerly HM Customs and Excise) about a change of address. This meant he was unable legally to trade above the VAT threshold, which was between £54,000 in 2001 and £67,000 in 2008. However, his Self Assessment tax returns showed his income had increased from £85,000 in 2001 to £346,000 in 2008, breaching the VAT registration limit by £279,000. During this period he continued to use his invalid VAT num-
ber on invoices, meaning he was collecting the VAT on his fees but pocketing the money for himself rather than paying it to the public purse. After his VAT de-registration, the thenHM Customs and Excise cancelled his VAT registration altogether from August 1999, after Pershad became a “missing trader”, disappearing below the VAT radar. However, he continued to ignore his VAT responsibilities, resulting in no VAT being paid from June 1999 to September 2011. Confiscation proceedings are underway. HMRC currently has a legal profession taskforce operating in London.
Woman jailed over stolen visas Shagufta Mahmood, 22, from Greater Manchester caught in a sham robbery of more than £8 million worth of visas stolen has received a suspended jail sentence. She was found with 877 blank visas - highly valued by criminals and terrorists - with a black market value of up to £10,000 each. The Associate Press reported that in January 2009, police recovered nearly 1,500 visas and more than 2,000 passports stolen in the raid but an investigation to the trace the rest continued. The police executed a warrant at Mahmood's home last July and discovered the haul in a black bin liner stashed in her loft. She was
jailed for seven months, suspended for two years, at Manchester Crown Court after she earlier pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods. In October 2009, courier Alan Burke, of Oldham, was jailed for four-and-a-half years after he admitted conspiracy to steal. "Prime mover" Mohammed Bilal Khan, of Werneth, was jailed for fiveand-half years, Mohammed Fiaz, was imprisoned for three-and-a-half years, Mohammed Shanaz, of Chadderton, was sentenced to three years and Jawad Karim, of Oldham, was ordered to serve 21 months in a young offender institution. All four had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to handling stolen goods.

Mela The word 'Mela' stands for a 'gathering or 'fair'- a place to enjoy oneself. The name certainly does justice, since this restaurant is a perfect place to have fun, as you celebrate gastronomy delight. But now the restaurant offers more than just finger licking food. It runs cookery classes, not to give away their secret ingredients to fame, but to make interested people familiar with the Indian cooking style, ingredients and the use
of its right quantity that makes food taste unique and heavenly. One of the oldest Indian restaurants, Mela is situated in the heart of West End, a part of the capital that’s near Covent Garden and right on Shaftesbury Avenue, an area usually associated with Chinese food. Mela remains to stand-

(and of course stomachs) to more than the usual 'tikka masala or vindaloo.' Asian Voice has reviewed Mela years back, but what attracted a revisit was the ever evolving menu, the frequent new inclusions, the uncompromising quality and taste of its wide range of dishes. Mela's new cooking classes are designed by Chef Patron Kuldeep Singh to help one understand the nuances of Indian food, knowledge of ingredients and traditional recipes. There are several packages available, including Corporate, summer barbecue, Indian curry and drinks and of course only Vegetarian classes that lasts upto 3 hrs. Magician 'vanishing cash' to face jail? A magician who worked in Harrods could be facing jail after allegedly vanishing cash from his cheese till. Amit Gadhia, 35, was a kids’ entertainer at the posh shop but was later moved to the food hall. Prosecutor Tom Gill told a court: “He was previously a magician in the store and used his talent to take money with one hand and secrete it with the other.” Gadhia, who worked at the London store for two-and-a-half years, said he stole because he was broke. He is believed to have taken around £70 in the run-up to Christmas. On searching, security
staff found a wrap of cocaine. Catherine Newey, defending Gadhia, said: “He simply had no money to get the basics and was tempted by the opportunity.” Gadhia, pictured, who is divorced and has no children, admitted to police that he had taken between £1 and £20 on
different occasions in the lead-up to Christmas as reported by the Daily Mail. Catherine Newey, defending, said her client had run into financial difficulties after his parents’ home was burgled and he contributed a ‘significant amount’ towards a security system. Ordering a probation report, Hammersmith JP Michael Cartwright reportedly warned: “All options are open, including custody.” Gadhia, of Enfield, North London, was due to be sentenced on Monday, after admitting theft by employee and possessing a class-A drug.

A world where no child is bought or sold Come, help us to create such a world Lady Mohini Kent Noon
If we sit in the face of evil and do nothing, what does that make us? Where is my conscience if I continue blindly with my privileged life whilst a small child is being sold into a brothel? In 2013 this newspaper will support the LILY campaign to oppose that evil. Every fortnight we will offer you a glimpse into the sinister world of sex slaves, little children who should be in school, through the personal narratives of these witnesses to hell.

Hitmen jailed for 40 years Two hitmen who stabbed an innocent schoolboy to death by mistake have been told they deserve to die behind bars after a judge handed them a minimum term of 40 years. Ben Hope, 39, and Jason Richards, 38, both from Cardiff, were each paid £1,000 in "blood money" to murder a middle-aged family man who owed money to a shady businessman. But the "hit" went horrificly wrong when the balaclava-clad killers, who were high on drugs, went to the wrong address in Roath, Cardiff, in April 2010 and murdered teenager Aamir Siddiqi by mistake. South Wales Police Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley described the murder as one of the worst he had seen in his 27-year career.
who then sold her on to a brothel for a handsome profit. Lily had been raped and taped in a pornographic film before she could be rescued. She was lucky to escape, to be cared for and educated. She is now 18 years old and poised to start her adult life. She has tried to put the trauma behind her but it still lies buried deep within her. But, hers is a story of hope. The LILY Foundation is named after her. We offer future hope to the millions of lilies out there that they can be rescued or, better still, prevented from being trafficked into brothels. Let me become their voice. Please show that you care by helping us through events and campaigns in the UK. The LILY Foundation, in partnership with iPartner India, works to support local

At present, we support six organisations in India and two in Britain, NGOs who are doing excellent work on the ground to bring about change through raising awareness and through poverty alleviation. India has the largest number of poor people in the world, and also the biggest number of malnourished children. Our work includes rescue & rehabilitation, healthcare, education, skills training, employment and even legislation. In short, giving them a life. iPartner India is a British registered charity. They invest in building up the capacity of local, grassroots projects and facilitate a greater reach. In 2012, the combined efforts of LILY & iPartner India have had an impact on about 1000 lives. Your local police teams scrapped by the london’s mayor Continued from page 3 The examination of Londonwide figures also show a reduction in police numbers. I’m totally opposed to the Alice in Wonderland like plans of the Mayor’s Office (MOPAC). The residents and lobby groups of Brent and Harrow, like many other areas of London, have given a complete thumbs down to the new policing model and there is widespread feeling that the Mayor, his Deputy Mayor
and Met Police are not listening to the community. The rhetoric from the Deputy Mayor for Policing and crime is that he wants to see more officers rooted in the community and reconnect with public but he is replacing the current much larger and successful ward based teams with smaller SNTs These proposals are short-sighted and will fundamentally undermine the ability of local police service to keep us safe.

Ismael Aumeerally The New Face of Luxury Ismael Aumeerally is a Partner as well as Head of Revenues and Partnerships at MGMT Concierge, a private members concierge service based in London. Catering to discerning individuals, MGMT operates within the glamorous world of super yachts. In summer 2012, MGMT Concierge was exclusively responsible for providing concierge services to all super yachts that came to the City for the 2012 Olympic Games. MGMT Concierge provides clients with the very best of what London and the UK has to offer – from red carpet events to Michelin star chefs, to private jet trips and luxury yacht charters. Ismael was invited to join MGMT when he was in his previous position, which was the Jaguar CEO/chauffeur programme manager, UK. Ismael’s grand parents are from Gujarat in India and settled in Mauritius in the early 1930s. He was born in Mauritius and had an idyllic childhood there, before studying Law in London in 1994. As an only son and the youngest, he was guided towards a legal career although his mother allowed him to follow his dreams – “As long as I had a degree in my back pocket. With her blessings I entered the automobile industry in 1999.” He told us. Being from French Mauritius helps Ismael on two levels. He said, “Multi lingual abilities help in any profession. In the lifestyle and high net worth industry clients expect a one stop shop where there are not dozens of layers of people involved in delivering a single aspect of an experience. Being from Mauritius helps because I have lived the sun, sea and sand lifestyle. I use my experience and my professional relationships back in Mauritius to help make our clients’ dreams come true.” Being Asian, Ismael feels, is an advantage in any industry. He says that we distinguish ourselves from others not only through our work and work ethics but also through our family values and abilities to work as a team. Asian philosophy is always to respect elders, so we value business mentors and leaders. It is
Ismael Aumeerally
why Indians in the UK are seen as hard working and dedicated, he commented. Ismael is generous with his contact database and nurtures his relationships. I told him that this is a rare quality. “In French there is a saying; ' show me the friends you have and I will show you the man you are'. That applies to business too since the kind of relationships in your network are what make you what you are worth. In the current business environment, it is even truer since business is done with people who can bring other worthy deals to the table. Relationships take ages to build and minutes to break which is why people are right to be protective of how they use and open their network to others. However, there has to be a right balance as people will mirror your behaviour.”
In French there is a saying; ' show me the friends you have and I will show you the man you are' We asked Ismael to tell us some characteristics about his clients. He says that they may differ in background but share a common love of super yacht ownership and the lifestyle it brings. Although by definition they form part of the top
rich list in their country of origin, they are still primarily people who value great service and transparency in all that MGMT does for and with them. Different nationalities have different perceptions of great things and great experiences, Ismael observed. But his clients also enjoy learning and embracing other cultures. He says in any case, a lot of what he offers his clients is the experience of the quintessentially British lifestyle. Ismael said that his company is selective about who it welcomes as members of MGMT concierge. “Unlike other concierge companies we do not act primarily as a restaurant table booking service or conduit to tickets for a Wimbledon final. Although these can easily be arranged, we focus on creating experiences for our clients (as we know what they like and enjoy) while trying to get them to try new things. Our clients are by invitation only and need to meet two criteria. First they must be super yacht owners or be part of the super yacht world and secondly must be recommended by an existing member. With regard to our partners we are as selective, since we must make sure that they can deliver a service that is of the level that is expected and that we can trust to exceed those expectations.”
National Hindu Students Forum (UK) By Kiran Patel
Heavy snow will not stop a visit from Hanuman Ji The National Hindu Students’ Forum (UK) North Zone Hanuman Chalisa has created a fantastic atmosphere in the North of the country whereby students and the wider community await to flock to the host City each year. Being such a renowned everlasting experience which attendees take away, the bhakti event has built strong ties amongst the students and the samaj. The North Zone 108 Hanuman Chalisa has created an amazing legacy in numerous cities and also has a living legacy of its own. Starting off as a NHSF Manchester initiative, students of Manchester University gathered to hold a Hanuman Chalisa, and invited all other NHSF chapters in the North of England to join in at the Bhakti event. The event then created its mark in Bradford during 2011
where there was a powerful imprint left amongst the wider community with over 600 attendees. This then expanded in February 2012 where Hanuman Ji once again proved that heavy snow on the day of the event two years in a row would not prevent students and the samaj coming together and building bridges to show love and devotion in exactly the same way Hanuman Ji did to Lord Ram by being his biggest bhakt. On Saturday 9th February 2013, NHSF Liverpool hosted the annual event which in its true form, integrated students and the Hindu samaj. As a gesture, each guest was given a scroll which had the Hanuman Chalisa printed on upon entering the Mandir, the morning started off with a havan where the priest explained to students
why a havan is carried out. The havan was followed by attendees showing their prem (love) of the forty Chupai’s written by Tulsidas Ji based on Hanuman Ji as the perfect model of a devotee. Reciting these forty verses, students, friends and families were singing with such passion and devoutness that one could see the strength come alive in each individual through the bhakti yoga. Young children were also greatly involved with some taking to the microphone to show that at a tender age, they too can recite the Hanuman Chalisa. The evening ended with Siva, the NHSF Liverpool president saying “Sangathan Mein Shakti Hai” that in unity lies strength as shown through the day where bridges were built between the students and the wider samaj.

I wrote my views before on this subject and will like to repeat that the policy of such high fees for university education will certainly effect the minds of people which will create a selfish British Society who will be only looking after himself or herself. Already the Government is thinking to reduce the benefit system and if it continues like this for another 20-30 years British Society a greedy and selfish Nation. It perhaps will not even remain even a Nation. I would strongly suggest that the Government must remove the fees for university education for local students and let 1% tax to be increased for education for the children of our country. You can keep the fee for overseas Students as it is. Dharam Sahdev Ilford
Go vegetarianism The country is rocked by the revelations that most beef sold in some super markets had horse meat. Even Pork has been found in beef products. This scandal is getting bigger and even school meals could have had horse meat. There could be severe health implications. The whole question of how meat is obtained and how it is produced has come into focus. Animals are transported thousands of miles to other countries cut into pieces and sent back to the country which transported the animals in the first place. So this is our 21st. Century where human beings fill their stomachs with violently abused God’s creatures and no animal, bird, insect or sea animal is safe from the human mouth. For those of us who have inherited the vegetarian diet and never had the misfortune to eat other living beings should consider our selves really lucky. How sad then that many Hindus and Jain’s have taken to meat eating. For over 30 years we have campaigned to promote vegetarianism and persuaded a huge number of people to never eat meat in the UK and many parts of the world. However Hindu and Jain organisations and their religious leaders have never actively made this issue the centre of all that their faiths stand for. It is almost as if the religious leaders are scared that if they push the idea of giving up meat eating they will lose their followers. Ahimsa is the root of all the religions that were born in India and until this principle is practiced everything else is meaningless. It is time for Hindu and other faith leaders from India to speak out and certainly all those who consider themselves as proud Hindus to give up meat eating. Please go to our website: and sign your pledge to go vegetarian if you are not. Nitin Mehta Via Email

All power to Lord Adam Patel and Mr MJ Akbar I am a regular reader of Asian Voice and I read the contents beneficially, which are full of varieties and vibrancy. Many thanks to all the concerned individuals at Asian Voice. The Asian Voice of 9th Feb 2013, page 6, made me very proud, not only for my preferred news weekly, but of Lord Patel and Mr Akbar. Both are very prominent Muslims and are internationally well-known. Mr Akbar declared without any hesitation with facts and figures, the happy and acceptable conditions of Muslims in India and vividly described the tragedies of his fellow religionists in other so called “Muslim” countries. Lord Adam Patel is perhaps the first Muslim to be elevated to the House of Lords, who gave Yeoman service, as the main co-ordinator for the British Muslim’s Hajj pilgrimage, to their holy land. It was right and proper for CB to salute Lord Patel in his “As it is” column. It requires courage and intelligence to correct one’s opinion and proclaim accordingly. I am sure that other Muslim leaders will respond to the stand taken by Lord Adam Patel. In our working democracy, like the Great Britain, one must stand up for one’s opinion and express their agreements and disagreements, with the views expressed by prominent persons like Mr MJ Akbar and Lord Adam Patel. Finally, I must congratulate CB for his seven points to ponder for all in this important dialogue with the Gujarat Chief Minister, honourable Narendra Modi. Well done and keep it up. Afzal Guru’s execution Execution of terrorist Afzal Guru is best news, proving bold decision by ministries, and President. Message to whole world, terrorists on death row, potential terrorist is, they will face death with no clemency even by President. Evil politicians, vested interests, and bogus human rightists will wring their hands and shed few tears. The mammoth India will march on. May God strengthen President to expedite hanging of more convicted terrorists and resolve pending, anti India issues. He embodies patriotic spirit of Subhash Bose, Sardar Patel and Atalbihari Vajpayee to make such bold decisions. India needed pragmatic President, instead of pro-west and proMuslim philosophers who evaded proIndia decisions. Though this is election gimmick to deflect BJP’s remarks about weak kneed UPA, it is a welcome measure to assuage India’s ego that has been compromised by constantly watching traitor enjoying 5-star hospitality. Human right organisations must realise that the person who plans and who picks up a gun or bomb, indulges in terrorism, loses human right, especially when he attacks ego of nation, temple of

Give Praise where it is due
CB’s AV article of 9th February (page 6), is an in-depth study, of the correct attitude and foresightedness required to be shown by one and all, who are at the helm of affairs. You have rightly pointed out that it is no good always beating about the breast over old things. One has to look at the prospective, prosperous future and the prevailing harmonious atmosphere in all parts of Gujarat. The good governance is to ensure such a calm and quiet amongst various sections of the society. Time again it is, pointed that the role of a journalist is to give a wake up call at the appropriate time. In this article you have rightly appreciated and taken note of Lord Adam Patel’s both, original response and the latest response by approaching CM of Gujarat for his constructive rule of 11 years. EU nations have approached CM and invited him for participation in the world business meet to be held in Nov. 2013. British govt. has reconsidered its original decision. As a journalist, one has to be always looking at the bright and right side . Lord Patel, who once criticised CM of Gujarat , has shown his courage and wisdom in meeting him .This is cause for which one has to persistently work hard to make people realize that Gujarat receives better treatment. I congratulate you on this.
As usual, CB’s piece “As it is” in last week’s Asian Voice took my breath away. It is written with inside knowledge, courage of conviction and to foster good relations amongst all Indians, especially Gujaratis, irrespective of their religion, caste, creed, culture or social standing. Like most Gujaratis, I am an ardent supporter of Narendra Modi, mainly due to his incorruptible personality, honesty and his love for Gujarat. He is turning Gujarat into one of the most dynamic, progressive and industrialized State in Asia and his role model is the tiny island nation of Singapore. He is the Lee Kwan Yew of Gujarat, a giant amongst the political pigmies of the Indian nation. My admiration for Modi does not mean I will not point out a dent in his armour where it is apparent. I was most surprised and disappointed that Gujarat BJP did not give party tickets to a single Muslim candidate in the recent State Assembly elections won so handsomely by BJP, even though fringe Muslim communities like Daudi Bhora, Ismali, Kokni, Mammon and Ahmedia Muslims support BJP and Modi. Due to enormous propaganda by the foreign controlled Indian media and the Congress, so many Hindus and Muslims alike were taken in by this propaganda, blaming Modi for the riots. CB has demolished this half-baked truth point by point in his piece. So the change of heart by Gujarati Muslim Lord Adam Patel to communicate with Modi is a welcome sign and reflects the changing time. He is following into the foot-steps of other successful Gujarati Muslims like Lord Gulam Noon and Shri Bashir Khanbhai former M.E.P. Lord Adam deserves our understanding and appreciation, as his action may not be universally understood or appreciated by members of his own community.

Coming unstuck Romanians and Bulgarians who are desperate to migrate to this country should be advised that Britain’s streets are not paved with gold but with discarded chewing-gum blobs. I’m surprised, by the way, that no Asian entrepreneur has yet considered developing a safe, quick and easy way to get rid of these unsightly stains. The first one to do so would no doubt become a multi-millionaire overnight as local councils all over the country rush to place bulk orders for such a magical product. Rudy Otter Via Email

Fair and just Muslims should take execution calmly, and must placate elements who may threaten dire consequences. India has weathered worse threats and violence to take such threats seriously. Yet when highly placed shameless politicians express anguish at execution, India should not be complacent, but meet rebels with ruthless force. Outrageous increase in visa fees The increase in Visa fees for India is totally out of proportion. It’s a very steep increase from £46 to £92 I.e. an increase of 100%. This will certainly deter number of potential tourists to India. It makes sense for those NRIs making regular visits to India to acquire OCI or PIO card. These schemes main purpose is to offer hassle free travel. OCI is not a dual nationality as such and it is definitely a better scheme out of the two.OCI offers life time of Visa as opposed to 15 years for PIO. But strangely enough, the cost of OCI is £172 whereas PIO card is £217! For those people who are eligible for OCI but do not have sufficient evidence, Nativity certificate is readily acceptable along with other documents. More information on OCI and PIO can be found on the Website of Indian High Commission.

Harvard professor and Economics Nobel laureate Amartya Sen was on his annual seasonal visit to Kolkata renewing his roots and engaging with the local community. Participating in a oneto-one conversation with actress Sharmila Tagore on the present state of India at the Kolkata Book Fair, he spoke his mind on the country’s Left, particularly of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Nuclear accord He was critical of the party’s decision to oppose the IndoUS nuclear energy deal and its chronic inability to perceive the larger social and economic picture. The party made much of its concern for the poor and disadvantaged, without
lines of the recently concluded Vibrant Gujarat. In a conversation with Israel’s Ambassador Alon Ushpiz and Consul General Orna Sangiv, Mr Modi showed particular interest in Israeli models of water management including water recycling for 50 of the state’s cities. He also discussed the possibility of an Israeli partnership in the defence manufacturing sector. (Hindu February 3)

rousing address promising to transform his country to Vibrant India just as he had with Gujarat. If Mr Modi was testing the waters of India’s emerging middle class, he must have been encouraged by the response. It is early days yet for India’s next general election, but Mr Modi is on a roll. Vishwa Hindu President Ashok Singhal compared his national popularity to Jawaharlal Nehru’s, but such praise from the leader of a grouping notable for its obscurantism may turn out to be double-edged. The Parishad’s demonstration in front of a Delhi gallery exhibiting the best of modern Indian art, because of some exhibits depicted the female nude is a case in point. Some of the greatest classical Indian sculptures include the male and female body; hence this alleged defence of “Indian culture” was asinine. Mr Modi will have to distance himself from the lunatic fringe, if he is to win over the country’s middle class permanently. Addressing another gathering, he contended that Nehru’s charisma had achieved little of substance. Wrong. Mr Modi

These were the areas of critical need, which if addressed effectively would result in genuine poverty amelioration and the platform for upward social mobility. Instead, the CPI(M) chose the more eye-catching media route of agitation on diesel oil and petrol price rises, which have less impact on the poor and more on the middle classes. Such price fluctuations are controlled by market forces, which every government in the world must take on board. (Hindu, Times of India February 4). Glib populism with its abundant promises and poor delivery is the bane of Indian politics.

While he was appreciative of the DRDO’s many achievements, he was also critical of its failure to deliver on time critical products such as the Tejas warplane, which is still to receive Full Operational Clearance (FOI). The first flight of Tejas occurred in January 2001. Delayed deliveries had led inevitably to costoverruns. DRDO is still stuck with Tejas Mark I, when Tejas Mark II should have been nearing production. (Times of India, Hindu, Telegraph February 6)

A private sector company is coming up trumps with a drone gadget. Once ready the drone can be used by security forces as an effective surveillance tool by the security forces in counter-insurgency operations. The robot in flight can transmit real time images to ground control of a 50-kilometre battlefield radius with clear locations of the enemy including camps and soldiers hiding behind bushes caught on night vision camera. “Information sent back by the robot can help security forces plan their operations with precision,” said Diwakar Vaish, head of robotics and research at the Delhi-based ASet Institute of Training and Research. Mr Vaish also demonstrated a spider robot that crawls on the ground and sends back data to controllers. These presentations were made at a three-day exhibition at Kharagpur’s Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Most ambitious of all, will be the forthcoming robot devised to read the mind. Mind boggling! It’s called the mind sensing robot, to give it its proper name. It can read certain facets of the human mind through the object’s sensory nerves Mr Vaish also demonstrated humanoid robots developed by the institute. These are prototypes. The armed forces have showed an interest in them, as have security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations. (Times of India February 4)
Fulfilling a dream Former US diplomat and now writer William Avery’s thought
provoking article on the state of higher education in India is well worth reading. (The Economic Times, February 3) Mr Avery establishes the telling link between higher education and economic growth, citing the examples of Japan and South Korea. He then moves on to China which has invested so heavily in higher education that its numbers coming out these institutions are the greatest in recorded history. Incredible. India’s performance, in contrast, has been uneven and faltering. The IITs and IMMs may be centres of excellence but their numbers, in relation to India’s massive needs, are small. India was in danger of losing this critical race, he said. Not allowing the best foreign universities to come to the country and make a vital contribution to quality education was shortsighted. Mr Avery is right. The Communists and BJP killed the enabling legislation in Parliament, fearing, no doubt, that a sophisticated public might sully their vote banks.
India’s lifeline However, there could be a lifeline for the country. US universities, such as Harvard and MIT, have started free online courses that were tailor-made for Indian students. Their learning models were the most advanced in the world. Mr Avery concludes: “As the revolution in free online education [translation technology can makes these into Hindi] takes hold, Indians should ask only one thing of their government: stay out of the way…..Ultimately there is a role for the government in setting standards for the new type of education, and for certifying institutions. But that is for later. The need of the hour is to get new university students learning by the lakh and then by the crore. “China’s investment in higher education, while impressively executed, may have been poorly timed. For China invested in an old and costly model of higher education. There is a new model out there, one uniquely well-suited to India. By investing in this model, India could win the higher education battle today, and the economic growth tomorrow.” Over to you, Narendra Modi.

Have you always wanted to be a singer? Music has been a part of me as far as I can remember. My father used to sing nasheeds, and I grew up from a young age looking up to my father in terms of any music. So I guess it’s always been a part of me in a way, my identity. How did you accomplish your signature style? Music has always been a passion. I have never been taught, I’m self-taught. Everything that I have learnt, I’ve imitated and created my own style from it. By listening to western, urban, hop hop influences with a blend of sufi, I have merged different genres of music to create a unique style of music. Your song, ‘Jadon Holi Jai’ managed to get an incredible 10,000 views in only 4 days of its release, how does it feel? I honestly feel blessed. People often forget that I am a debut artist because of the success of the

song. I feel blessed and happy that real music is coming back. How did the song come about? Well the first day I met Rishi in London was a great day in itself. The moment we sat down, he knew what I’m about and I knew what he was about. In terms of putting down the vocals, it only took 20 minutes to do the whole track. In terms of the track, I chose the track (I’m going take full credit for this one!), my parents listened to this all the time when I was growing up so I was brought up listening to it and when Rishi heard it, he loved it too. What was it like working with Rishi Rich? Rishi is one of the finest producers in the world – his style is very clear, I recognized his unique style from one of the first tracks he did. The fact that his old songs are still so fresh today shows that his music is almost ahead of his time. I’d like to think my style of music takes you back to the
Who has been your inspiration? My main inspiration was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan when he was alive. I never had the privilege of seeing him live, but he was a massive inspiration. He took the world, not just Asia, by storm. His style is unmatched, unparalleled, even in 2013. We worked on a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan track and basically we were going back to basics in terms of vocals but with a modern twist. I’m nowhere near Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, I’m not even trying that, but what I am trying to do, is give it a style of my own, which is what I did with Jado Holi Jai. Will you be producing an album soon? We’re working on it; we’ve got a couple of tracks ready. An album is definitely in the pipeline and hopefully, inshallah, it’ll be put together. Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years time? I take everyday as it comes and I feel humbled by everyday. My music being recognized is just a bonus. Neetu Chandra’s Kuthu dance in ‘Settai’
Aamir Khan wears ghagra in PK It’s a common knowledge that Aamir Khan has begun shooting for Rajkumar Hirani's PK in Rajasthan. However, what took us by surprise was Aamir's get-up! Aamir is seen wearing a blazer along with a ghagra (something we've never seen anybody wear as yet). Wonder what is the significance of this particular look? PK is an upcoming political satire directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The film stars Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles. Aamir has been accompanied by his wife and son at the sets. Aamir has a 45-day shooting schedule lined up in Rajasthan and he couldn't afford to spend that long a time apart from his family. So he decided to take them along with him, said a source.
Neetu Chandra had earlier danced for a Kuthu song in the film “Yuddham Sei.” She has currently paired with Jayam Ravi in the film “Aadhi Bhagavan” directed by Ameer. This film is to be released soon. Apart from this, Neetu Chandra has agreed to dance for a Kuthu song in the film “Settai” which has Arya, Santhanam, Premgi, Hansika and Amala in the cast. There is great expectations prevailing about this film since it is a the remake of the super hit Hindi film “Delhi Belly.”
Ekta Kapoor’s next movie to be titled ‘Villain’
Say Bollywood film, and the next thing that comes to mind is Who’s the hero? But, what’s interesting is that producer Ekta Kapoor has decided to focus on the anti-hero and called her project, Villain, which will be directed by Mohit Suri. Yes, Mohit and Ekta have tentatively titled their film ‘Villain.’ Ekta is trying to buy the rights to the title since it belongs to someone else as of now. But knowing her influence in the industry, she will surely manage to get it,” says a trade insider. Ekta and Mohit are currently looking a new face to fit the role of an angry young man. “Anti-heroes have always taken actors to the next level. For my film too, I am looking at a young Amitabh Bachchan,” says Ekta.

Sherlyn Chopra thrown out of ‘K*masutra 3D’... fumes!!! The makers of ‘K*masutra 3D’ are looking forward to replace Bollywood actor Sherlyn Chopra and are approaching Hollywood stars like Eva Longoria or Mila Kunis for the film instead. The film director Rupesh Paul decided to replace the actress, after Chopra left him miffed by uploading a video clip of the photo shoot of the film on her Youtube channel without seeking his permission, it has been revealed. The Indian model, who seems to be unable to digest this news, took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to express her anger.
Sunny Leone files complaint against Kamaal Khan Sunny Leone lodged a complaint with Mumbai police against Kamaal R Khan for falsely attributing controversial comments on rape to her on his microblogging page. A few days back, Kamaal had written, "Ye lo... Sunny Leone says — Rape is not a Crime, It's just a Surprise Sex." However, the actress tells us that she never said anything like that. She says, "This whole issue is quite sad. I never made this statement at all. No woman in this entire world would. He has written it and tagged me on it. He has not 'retweeted' my comment. I believe rapists need psychological help. They need to be institutionalised."
Zeenat Aman: Yes, I am in love Zeenat Aman, who redefined the liberated unfettered modern woman of Hindi cinema of the 1970s through her no-holdsbarred performances in 'Hare Rama Hare Krishna', has found love again but hasn't decided anything about marriage. "Yes, I am in love. There is someone in my life, I won't deny it. But I am not getting married! Not right now at least. Yes, he has proposed to me. But I haven't decided to take the plunge as yet," said Zeenat. "It's a fact. I've my fingers crossed this time. Let's see how the relationship plays out. If at all there's marriage, it would be very quiet. At my age, I can't have a big fat wedding, though I feel you are as old or as young as you feel," she said. The actress, who was married to actor Mazhar Khan until his death in 1998, has two adult sons - Azaan and Zahaan - who she says, are the prime focus of her life.

I'll start shooting for it very soon," Kamal, 58, said at the screening of the film in Chennai. The sequel will be completely shot in India. Kamal had hinted about this in the credits of "Vishwaroopam", which has hit theatres in Tamil Nadu after a lot of dilly-dallying due to the protests from Muslim organisataions. The Rs 950 million espionage thriller was originally scheduled for release on Jan 25, but the state govt imposed a ban on the film for two weeks after some Muslim groups complained that some scenes in the film portrayed the community in a bad light. The ban was revoked after Kamal agreed to a truce with Muslim organisations.

Priyanka Chopra's family has found the perfect match for her in the form of TV actor Mohit Raina who plays Mahadev in the popular mythological series. Priyanka Chopra had been avoiding the question of marriage stating that she is eagerly waiting for her “Dulhe Miya.” However, things seem to have changed and her family has taken keen interest in finding her an appropriate partner. Recently it was found out that PC's maasi has found a suitable man for her niece. No it's not a Bollywood star or a business man! Media caught up with Priyanka to find out who is the lucky guy. A blushing Piggy Chops revealed that it's none other than the king of small screen, the most adored Mahadev himself! Priyanka's maasi is smitten by the omniscient yogi and considers him to be a wellbehaved, honest young man who is also an exceptionally good actor. “Has marriage brought any change in her wardrobe now that she has transformed from Bebo to Begum?” This question set Kareena thinking. She paused, and said, "This is interesting. I haven't thought about it but I don't think there has been any change. I have always dressed correctly as per the occasion. I have been known as a 'Little Princess' and now I am Saif's 'Little Princess.' Saif doesn't want to change the way I dress. And I am an actor first and then a begum. Today I wanted to wear jeans but they will kill me...." Kareena was
addressing the gathering at the launch of her book The Style Diary of a Bollywood Diva. When Kareena was approached for this book, the actress thought she might write a book when she was 60. "What if something more interesting happens 20 years later? But when I was told that it was going to be a style diary, I realised: 'Yes, I'm stylish and I should take the compliment.' I took the responsibility of how it feels like to be a style diva," Kareena said, further adding that she would love to write her autobiography in the future.
Salman Khan is known for not stepping up on the stage to accept awards. But there was an exception on February 5th that too after 14 years when Salman went to the podium to accept an award of Best Brand Endorser of The Year. According to reports, Salman remained seated even when his name was called out this time too but after his fans cajoled him, Salman decided to go on the stage. He reportedly said that he doesn't generally accept awards because he thinks he doesn't deserve them. Salman even went on to say that these awards create a rift between actors. Even if Salman performs at any award function he doesn't go to the stage to receive awards, generally his brother Arbaaz receives them on his behalf. Salman Khan was last seen receiving an award for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Financial Voice Dear Financial Voice Reader,
As I read through the papers for a Chatham House Investment Committee meeting (its 0225am!) I am well positioned to comment on the investment outlook for 2013. Analysing a series of criteria from valuation of companies, to the returns they produce on the capital they deploy, profit margins, sales growth, annual profit growth, dividend payouts, and most importantly the free cash flow generated by the companies. The companies on my analysis rating the highest include Microsoft and AstraZeneca. Both rate at a score of 90+ out of 100 on my ratings. By comparison, whilst I am and remain a fan of Apple, it has a score of 70. If I measure a company by the free cash flow it generates then Apple should be double the level it is now. If I measure the company by the more conservative book value (one favoured by Warren Buffett then Apple is fairly priced). On the same book value measure, Microsoft is 50% undervalued – meaning it would rise 50% to be fairly valued. AstraZeneca can rise 30% to be fairly valued. When I look at such numbers I do not care what the company makes or its future plans. I look at trends and its performance. To me companies are just number generators. They just produce earnings and revenues and cash after paying all taxes and expenses. Google on these measures is rated 74 out of 100. So what’s all the fuss about Apple then? It’s instructive because it teaches us how sometimes the media gets carried away by focussing on one element and so lead to a share price becoming undervalued, but will inevitably resume, when a fuller analysis of all relevant measures is undertaken. So what are all these? Examining Apple for instance you see the return on capital invested is relatively high compared to other companies. This is because the company has many patents and has already sunk much cost in development. Now is the exploitation phase. Balance sheets are being overlooked for companies being pushed lower, like Apple, and the amount of cash sitting on the books. After all a profitable company is worth at least the cash on its books. Pricing power is driving the company’s share price unduly down because profit margins are no longer in the 40% bracket but only 30%+. You would think we would be impressed, but not apparently. What makes someone like Buffett so good at investing is he focusses on the most important factors and also waits for the market to put too much emphasis on the other factors. So in the case of stocks he likes it would be the amount of free cash flow the company generates. This is cash after all other payments. It is actually different to profits or earnings because unlike cash, profits can be manipulated by accountancy standard. Of course, patience also helps and I remain positive for 2013 on Apple. Indeed by December 2014 I expect a 50 return. www.investingbetterblog.com
Sebi free to freeze accounts of Sahara: SC The Supreme Court last week told market regulator Sebi that it was free to freeze accounts and seize properties of Sahara group's two companies for defying court orders by not refunding Rs 240 billion to investors. A special bench of Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice JS Khehar also pulled up Sebi for not taking action against the companies Sahara India Real Estate Corporation(SIREC) and Sahara Housing Investment Corporation (SHIC) - in accordance with its August 31, 2012 order that allowed the regulator to attach properties and freeze companies' bank accounts in case of a violation. Acting on Sebi's contempt petition, the bench also issued notice to the
group and gave it four weeks time to respond as to why contempt action should not be initiated against the companies for not complying with its order. "What steps are you taking? You are not taking any action. The judgment tells you what to do but you are not doing it," the bench told Sebi counsel arguing the contempt petition. It wasn't satisfied by Sebi's contention that the market regulator had approached civil court in Bombay for freezing the companies' bank accounts. The regulator added it had also issued notice to the Sahara companies. "Why you gave notice and did not take action. You have to execute our order," the bench said.
December industrial production unexpectedly shrank for a second straight month in December, weighed down by weak investment and consumer demand, casting doubt on finance minister P Chidambaram's view that Asia's-third largest economy is showing signs of recovery. The index of industrial production (IIP) fell 0.6 per cent annually in December, data released by the Central Statistics Office showed on Tuesday. Manufacturing output, which accounts for the bulk of industrial production and contributes about 15 per cent to overall gross domestic product (GDP), fell 0.7 per cent in December from a year earlier. "What is clear is that any meaningful industrial recovery is eluding us. Demand destruction is far more well entrenched than we thought," said Sujan Hajra, chief economist at brokerage firm Anand Rathi in Mumbai, who said he now sees GDP growth
next year of 5-6 per cent. Preliminary data from statistics office last week predicted growth of 5 per cent for the fiscal year ending in March 2013. That was worse than anticipated and triggered an angry response from Chidambaram. Chidambaram said the Central Statistical Organisation had used "dated data" and argued that GDP growth was following an upward trend in a sign of revival. He reiterated his view that 5.5 per cent growth was possible. "We can recapture the
magic of 2004-08. The average growth was 8.5 per cent during that period," he said on Saturday. "Why should we, without any reason, denigrate our own performance and record? I have no doubt in my mind that we will come out of the trough and we will climb back to a growth rate of between 6-7 per cent next year," he said. Chidambaram is under political pressure to unveil a growth-oriented budget on Feb 28 for the next fiscal year, as the government gears up for an election due by early 2014 at the latest.
ArcelorMittal posts $3.73 bn net loss in 2012
ArcelorMittal, world’s largest steelmaker, has reported a net loss of US $ 3.73 bn in 2012 which is largely due to $ 4.3 billion write down related to the company’s European businesses. It had posted net profit of $ 2.26 bn in 2011. Operating profit or EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) also fell by 30 per cent to $ 7.08 bn in 2012 vis-a-vis $ 10.11 bn in 2011, ArcelorMittal said in a statement. The company’s sales too were down 10.39 per cent to $ 84.21 billion in 2012. However, ArcelorMittal gave a positive outlook for 2013, saying it expects higher EBITDA and 2-3 per cent
increase in steel shipments in 2013. It is also expecting “marginal” improvement in per-tonne steel margins in 2013 as it hopes to reap full benefits of asset optimisation plan that was completed during the second half of 2013. “Year 2012 was a very difficult time for the steel industry, particularly in Europe where demand for steel fell a further 8.8 per cent... Although we expect the challenges to continue in 2013, largely due to the
fragility of the European economy, we have recently seen some more positive indicators,” the company’s Chairman Lakshmi Mittal said. He added that various measures taken last year to strengthen company’s businesses, including reducing capacities and net debt are “expected to support an improvement in the profitability of our steel business this year.” For 2013, the company has set a capex of USD 3.5 billion on various operations and expansion plans. However, it has proposed to reduce the dividend for 2013 by about 74 per cent to $ 0.20 per share against $ 0.75 per share of 2012.
But he is also faced with the arduous task of trimming a swollen fiscal deficit that has put country's investment-grade credit rating in peril. He has already ordered spending cuts in welfare, defence and road projects for this financial year. Critics warn that at a time of low growth, lower spending risks deepening the slowdown without helping the deficit-to-GDP ratio. Rate cuts may help: The Reserve Bank of India reduced its policy interest rates by a widely expected 25 basis points on Jan 29 to spur the economy, and investors hope slower price rises will lead to another. "Despite incremental efforts we are still staring at a weak growth print," said Jyotinder Kaur, economist at HDFC Bank. "We expect a rate cut in March as growth is consistently surprising on the downside while the pace of CPI (consumer price inflation) has stabilised."
China becomes biggest trading nation, pips US
China surpassed the US to become the world's biggest trading nation last year as measured by the sum of exports and imports of goods, a milestone in the Asian nation's challenge to the US dominance in global commerce. US exports and imports of goods last year totaled $3.8 trillion, the US commerce department said last week. China's customs administration reported last month that the country's total trade in goods in 2012 amounted to $3.9 trillion. China's increasing influence threatens to disrupt regional trading blocs, said Goldman Sachs Group Inc's Jim O'Neill.
Libor scandal: RBS fined £390m
Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has been fined £390m ($610m) by UK and US authorities for its part in the Libor rate-fixing scandal. The UK's Financial Services Authority issued a fine of £87.5m, while about £300m will be paid to US regulators and the US Department of Justice. The bank said wrongdoing had been uncovered by 21 employees, who had now been disciplined or left the bank. Chairman Sir Philip Hampton said it was a "sad day for RBS". RBS is the third major bank to admit attempting to manipulate Libor. Last
year Barclays and Swiss bank UBS were also fined by regulators for similar failings. RBS said that £300m of the fines would be paid using money clawed back from bonuses already paid, and reductions to future bonuses. Widespread misconduct: "There were serious shortcomings in our systems and controls and also in the integrity of a small group of our employees," Sir Philip said in a statement. "We have to fix the culture in the banking industry... the board has used all means possible to ensure the gravity of this
issue is reflected in the remuneration received by employees." The rate at which banks in London lend money to each other for the short-term in a particular currency. A new Libor rate is calculated every morning by financial data firm Thomson Reuters based on interest rates provided by members of the British Bankers Association. The FSA revealed that the bank qualified for a 30% discount on its fine because it agreed to settle at an early stage of the investigation. Without the discount the fine would have been £125m.
It said the misconduct at RBS was "widespread" and had involved "a number of employees and occurred over a number of years". RBS's Japanese subsidiary has pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud relating to the manipulation as part of the settlement with US regulators. The bank has entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the US Department of Justice on other charges. Feeling the deal
Suresh Vagjiani Sow & Reap A Property Investment Company
Last week we agreed a property with a view to purchase and resell, the property price was £365,000 and it was worth £475,000 to £500,000 with some works required. It’s a two bedroom flat in West Hampstead; the property was actually being bought for £325,000 but with the lease extension done at the same time of purchase it was coming to £365,000. There’s only so much you can do to a two bedroom flat therefore it’s reasonable to estimate a maximum of £20,000 for a standard refurbishment, on the assumption everything needs to be done. The location is a strong one; and the property consists of 750 Sq Ft and the end value was based on £665 per Sq FT, on a long lease we came to the figure of £500,000. The numbers stacked up, but the problem with flats is you have no control over the communal areas no matter how nicely you do the inside of a flat up. The communal areas here had the musty smell you get in a hopistal or a school. This can be off putting for a future buyer. The flat too is a bog standard flat you would expect in a purpose built block, meaning there was nothing grand or special about it, however the location is strong and this is the first mantra of property investment. It is very important the communal area looks good even if the numbers stack up; if the communal areas are poor it can be a real downer on the deal. In order to resell a property from a quick buy and sell perspective it needs to appeal at first glance, in the same way a new car appeals to a buyer. It's an emotional appeal. When you look at the numbers most of the time it makes no sense to purchase a new car, as soon as you drive it out it loses the most money from its value. For this reason we decided not to proceed with the purchase as a buy and sell project. We were doubtful the property would resell quickly enough to justify a flip. However as a Buy to Let it worked very well due to the location, the inbuilt equity and the achievable rental of £500pw. So we are going ahead with it on the basis of a long term buy and hold property. The client we are working with on this will be purchasing a property worth at least £475k for £385k, so with £90k in equity.
Not easy to g et some thing which has nearly 25% inbuilt equ ity in this prime lo catio n o f W est H ampste ad . I get emails with this kind of discount and more all over the UK pretty much on a daily basis but the questions that arise are: where will the price be in a year's time from purchase? Will it be higher or lower? And what is the reason why the property is discounted? The reason why many of these properties are heavily discounted is plain and simple, no one is purchasing them and so they have been packaged up and sold to a naive investor who really believes there’s a genuine discount to them. Sometimes these properties have been packaged so as to reduce the deposit required so the purchaser has to part with very little money thus making it easier to agree the sale especially to investors who have little funds available. When a large number of units are sold this way there is no actual discount as the discounted price becomes the market price;

as a property is only worth what someone will pay for it. Many of these are sold on a high yield; this may be correct but what if the underlying capital value decreases? This is what one should be focusing on when investing, not the yield. The yield is secondary. The interesting part of this particular deal is also the benefit gained from financing. A normal BTL mortgages require a 25% deposit. As there is a 25% discount on the property this property once developed can be refinanced after a six month period and the initial deposit can be extracted from the property, meaning you have no money tied up in this deal and you're able to be in a position to look for another one; of course you would need to obtain a mortgage with no penalty on it. You need to wait six months before the mortgage lenders will allow you to take money out. There are a few which will consider the fact you have done work on the property and hence consider the enhanced the value but their terms tend not to be favorable. Th is time pe riod e xists as an at tempt t o red uce frau d in the mortgage mark et; what it has d one is slo w do wn t he pace at which investors with limited fu nds can prog ress. In short this has served to slow down the pace of the housing market at a time when housing needs are not being meet adequately. We decided this wasn't a flip not because the numbers weren't right, but the feel of the property wasn’t right. This feel factor is very important for a quick resell. Only two kinds of buyers are in the market one is the invester and the other is the end user. It's the end user we want not the investor. The investor is like us and will not pay the right price; they will be looking for a deal. The end user is likely to purchase with emotional appeal and therefore pay a premium if they like the property. A property we did agree on with a view to buy and resell was a lateral flat in Hampstead. This was a probate sale, it has a high ceiling and is a light and airy property with an extremely good feel factor. This is one property which will have a emotional pull once developed. Even in its present state we believe there is a chance we can sell this prior to completion. The property will be purchased for just over £1.1m and we believe the resell will be around £1.5m developed. It is rare to get lateral flats in this location, most flats of this size tend to be spread over 2 or even 3 floors, this destroys the look and feel not to mention the wastage in space. It is very important to be aware of the emotional aspect of property, I have seen properties go for ridiculous amounts at auction where emotion really comes into play. Specifically I remember a property which had a guide price of £1.5m and it sold for £3m! It was in a super prime location. Clearly there were some emotions at play here, compounded by the lack of properties which come on to the market.

Telecom giant Vodafone said it would challenge the Indian tax authorities order regarding the transfer pricing case pertaining to sale of shares of its Indian unit to a Mauritiusbased group company. "As this latest order relates to a share subscription and share subscriptions are not covered by transfer pricing rules either in India or internationally, we will be challenging the order as it has no basis in law," a Vodafone Group spokesperson said. The Indian tax authorities last week have issued a order to Vodafone alleging that Vodafone India under-priced its shares issued to a Mauritius-

Human rights: the courts v the UKBA 3 of the is getting Article more complicated since Convention on the Rights Ithemmigration Government intro- of a Child (and UK legisduced its own version of human rights law and where it considered the balance should be struck. As predicted in previous articles that there would be a challenge to the new rules introduced on human rights, the deluge of cases has begun. Judges now have to apply a two tier system. They are first required to consider the law as laid down by the UKBA in the Immigration Rules. Then they have to consider and apply the principles on human rights as set out in the cases decided in Strasbourg. Where there is a conflict the Strasbourg law takes precedence. The Immigration Rules have laid down that a person must complete 20 years in order to succeed under a private life. However the courts have stated that the law on human right as established in Strasbourg confirms that where a person has lived in the UK since childhood a claim on the basis of a private life must succeed unless there are very serious reasons to justify expulsion. In relation to children, it has been clearly ruled that the Rules do not provide a proper consideration of where the best interests of a child lie and in fact there is a conflict with its duty under
lation which adopted this). In particular the UKBA had argued that the best interests of a child are adequately taken care of when there is one parent is in the UK to look after the child. The Courts roundly rejected this argument on the basis that it cannot be in the best interests of a child to lose contact with a parent simply because someone else can look after the child. These cases are just the beginning of a long line of decisions that are likely to be decided in the courts. In other good news, a case has decided that where evidence is sent to the UKBA after an application is made (which existed but was not available) before a decision is reached, it can be taken into account in a case on appeal. There is some bad news for accountants as a recent case has concluded that ACCA does not have degree awarding powers and accordingly the qualifications it awards are not UK recognised degrees. The spokesperson added Vodafone has also filed a writ petition challenging the jurisdictional issues on the basis of precedent established in the recent Vodafone International Holdings BV - Hutchison Supreme Court judgment. Vodafone is also engaged with the Indian government regarding the Rs 112 billion tax liability issue related to the British firm's acquisition of Indian
I'm really very optimistic on India: Mukesh Ambani
Reliance India chairman Mukesh Ambani is bullish on both India and the US because of the aspirations of a billion people in one and a fundamental transformation of the energy scene in the other. "I'm more optimistic than most" India's richest and Asia's second richest man said in an interview when asked about his assessment of the world economy five years after the financial crisis began. Ambani said he was very "bullish" on India despite a slowdown of India's growth to 5.5 per cent and foreign investors' complaints about poor infrastructure and lack of reform. "India has had some slow growth, but I'm really very optimistic on India,"
he said. "I'm very bullish on India, because it's really the aspirations of a billion people. And ours is a country where all the billion count." "We are on a long-term growth trajectory. And this is just not growth in terms of GDP numbers, right? This really is for the wellbeing of each and every Indian. And that's the aspiration," Ambani said. Ambani was equally bullish about the US saying, "My view is that this

year we will see the beginning of a recovery, particularly in the US" because "There has been a fundamental transformation in the energy scene in the US." Ambani felt that the US will be independent of foreign imports of energy in the next five or seven years as it "truly found non-conventional energy in shale oil and gas, which is really bringing benefit not only to the population in the US, but really to across the world." Things were getting better elsewhere too, he said noting "China is maintaining steady growth. It's not decelerating. Europe has found its own transition path, and they will transgress through the financial system in an ordinary way."
If you felt the government would encourage airlines to expand their fleets after the closure of Kingfisher caused fares to spike, think again. Low-cost carrier IndiGo wanted to import 16 aircraft this year but the aviation ministry has allowed them to bring in only five.
For the remaining 11 aircraft, IndiGo has been asked to submit detailed plans on how it intends to use them. This process may take time as the ministry is in the process of finalizing new norms for schedule airlines to fly to tier II and III cities. And, the nod to import more planes would be linked to meeting the new norms under which it may be mandatory for all airlines to have smaller turboprops in their fleet to fly to smaller towns. IndiGo has so far placed orders for 280 Airbus A-320 aircraft and is yet to receive over 200 of them till 2025. It currently has 63 aircraft, with three of the five cleared planes being inducted this year and two more expected this fiscal. The aircraft acquisition committee is headed by aviation minister Ajit Singh and the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) had even objected to this hierarchy some months back due to fears that this could delay the process of importing aircraft.

Sterling staged a dramatic turnaround in the currency markets as last week’s session drew to a close. Reversing losses which sterling incurred since the start of 2013 to outperform all of the sixteen most-actively traded global currencies. The pound’s positive showing was largely attributable to comments by Bank of England Governor in waiting Mark Carney during a questions and answers session with the Treasury Committee at the House of Commons. Analysts had been expecting Carney to trot out more of his ultra-dovish philosophy regarding quantitative easing, following recent comments calling for global central banks to introduce even looser monetary policies. Carney took the markets by surprise by suggesting that flexible inflation based targets are still the best way to determine monetary policy. Investors had been anticipating that Carney would favour a switch to GDP based targets. Adjusting policy in order to control domestic

$46.0bn which analysts had been anticipating. The euro weakened last week over concerns that the recent appreciation of the currency could affect exports and thus hinder growth. Initial concern was raised by French president Francois Hollande during last week’s euro group meetings with the point then reiterated by ECB president Mario Draghi during the ECB’s monetary policy statement on Thursday. The euro zone clearly remains in recession as real GDP in the overall euro area has contracted for four consecutive quarters. Germany has been the “strong man of Europe since 2009. In contrast to real GDP in the overall euro area, which in Q3 2012 remained 2.4% below its Q1 2008 peak, German GDP was 2.0% above its previous peak. However, it appears that German real GDP also dropped in Q4. Data on real GDP in Germany, as well as in most other individual economies in the Eurozone, are due for release on Thursday.

Islamabad: Switzerland has refused to reopen long-running corruption cases against Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari because he has immunity as a head of state, Pakistan's law ministry said. The development could draw a line under a three-year row that has pitted Pakistan’s top court against the ruling Pakistan People's Party, cost a prime minister his job, and threatened to bring down the government before the end of its term. At the insistence of the Supreme Court, Pakistan wrote to Swiss authorities
in November over the multi-million-dollar allegations against Zardari, which date back to the 1990s. He and his late wife, former premier Benazir Bhutto, were accused of using Swiss banks to launder $12 million in alleged kickbacks. Yasmin Abbasey, a top law ministry official, said the Swiss declined to reopen the cases which were frozen when Zardari became head of state in 2008. “They said the president has immunity. This was the main issue and they have confirmed it,” she said. Pakistan’s top

court spent nearly three years demanding the coalition government led by Zardari’s PPP to ask the Swiss to reopen the cases. The tussle cost PM Yousuf Gilani his job last June, when SC convicted him of
My fate is in the hands of God, not America: Hafiz Saeed
Lahore: Ten million dollars does not seem to buy much in this bustling Pakistani city. That is the sum the United States is offering for help in convicting Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, perhaps the country’s best-known jihadi leader. Yet Saeed lives an open, and apparently fearless, life in a middle-class neighbourhood here. “I move about like an ordinary person - that’s my style,” said Saeed, a burly 64-year-old, reclining on a bolster. “My fate is in the hands of God, not America.” Saeed is the founder, and is still widely believed to be the true leader, of Lashkar-e-Toiba, the militant group that carried out the 2008 attacks in Mumbai, in which more than 160 people, including six Americans, were killed. The United Nations has placed him on a terrorist list and imposed sanctions on his group. But few believe he will face trial any time soon in a country that maintains a perilous ambiguity toward jihadi militancy, casting a benign eye on some groups, even as it battles others that attack the state.
Saeed’s very public life seems more than just an act of mocking defiance against the Obama administration and its bounty, analysts say. As American troops prepare to leave Afghanistan, Lashkar is at a crossroads, and its fighters’ next move - whether to focus on fighting the West, disarm and enter the political process, or return to battle in Kashmir - will depend largely on Saeed. At his Lahore compound - a fortified house, office and mosque - Saeed is shielded not only by his supporters, burly men wielding Kalashnikovs outside his door, but also by the Pakistani state. On a recent evening, police officers screened visitors at a check-
Islamabad: Fiery cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri, who recently led a protest against the Pakistan government to push for electoral reforms, approached the Supreme Court to seek the restructuring of the Election Commission. Talking to reporters after filing a petition on the issue, Qadri said his stance was based on constitutional provisions which stated that the Election Commission could be reconstituted. According to the Constitution, he said, the poll panel would consist of five members, and the
names of 15 candidates should be presented before parliament for appointing these members. The parliament would have to hear all 15 candidates, he contended. The Constitution makes it mandatory to hold a parliamentary hearing before the appointment of members, he claimed. Qadri, who heads the Pakistan Awami Tehrik party, has claimed in recent interviews that the members of the Election Commission representing the four provinces were not appointed in an impartial manner.

point near his house, while other officers patrolled an adjoining park, watching by floodlight for intruders. His security seemingly ensured, Saeed has over the past year addressed large public meetings and appeared on prime-time television, and is now even giving interviews to Western news media outlets he had previously eschewed. He says he wants to correct “misperceptions”. During an interview with The New York Times at his home, Saeed insisted that his name had been cleared by the Pakistani courts. “Why does the United States not respect our judicial system?” he asked. During that stretch, his group was focussed on attacking Indian soldiers in the disputed territory of Kashmir - the fight that led the military’s Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate to help establish Lashkar-eToiba in 1989. But that battle died down over the past decade, and Lashkar began projecting itself through its charity wing, Jamaat-udDawa, which runs a tightly organized network of hospitals and schools across Pakistan.
contempt for refusing to obey orders. After Gilani’s removal, fears arose that his successor Raja Ashraf could suffer the same fate, and the government could fall before completing its fiveyear term in March. The PPP faces a tough fight in the election. Should it lose, Zardari might lose the presidency and his immunity. Political analyst Hasan Askari said the news from Switzerland meant the chapter was closed for now, but warned the opposition would still use the issue to attack the PPP as polls approach.
Pak rupee at all-time low Karachi: The Pakistani
rupee on Monday plunged to its all-time low of 100.1 against the US dollar on worries of dwindling forex reserve after reports of the country repaying USD 146 million to the International Monetary Fund. The Pakistani rupee fell to the 100 rupee mark after it opened at 99.30 in the open market. It has now lost 39 per cent of its value against the US currency since March 2008. "This is the first time the rupee has weakened to beyond the 100 rupee mark and it happened on Monday in the open market where the dollar traded around 100.1 rupees," Intikhab Ahmed, analyst, Capital Investments, said. He, however, said the official state bank rate/inter bank rate for the dollar remained at 98 Pakistani rupees. "But in the open market it traded at slightly over 100 rupees," he said. The IMF has given Pakistan a USD 10.7 billion loan until September but the government has drawn only about a third of it. The government has said it had no intention of seeking a new loan from IMF.
Pak cleric moves Supreme Court to seek restructuring of Election Commission
Tahir-ul-Qadri
The cleric recently led thousands of his supporters in a sit-in protest outside parliament. The demonstration ended when Qadri and the government signed a deal that said his demands for electoral reforms would
be considered. In a surprising development, deputy prime minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi too has demanded the reconstitution of the poll panel. The senior PML-Q leader, an ally of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party, said he had full confidence in Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G Ebrahim but called for the other members to be changed. Mr Elahi claimed his party was the first to demand the restructuring of the Election Commission and now other parties had agreed on the move.

Pope Benedict to step down on Feb 28
Speculation is rising over who will be elected the next leader of the Roman Catholic Church, a day after Pope Benedict shocked the world with a surprise announcement that he is stepping down. The pope, a German formerly known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, told a group of cardinals on Monday in a routine meeting that he will step down February 28 because his advancing age was making it difficult to carry out his duties. Pope Benedict will be the first pope to resign from his post since the year 1415, when Pope Gregory stepped down to resolve conflicting claims over the leadership of a church that now serves some 1.2 billion followers worldwide.
(SFJ) legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said. "It was rather an organized, deliberate and politically engineered action by Congress (party) leaders," he said. In a media release, SFJ said to secure support for its "genocide" petition; it had met various officials of the US Department of State. It had also submitted a legal brief, statements of survivors and evidence
relating to the 2011 discovery of mass graves in Hondh-Chillar, Haryana, and other states of India. The group also presented official Indian government records showing that a total of 35,000 claims of deaths and serious injuries were filed by Sikhs who suffered attacks during November 1984. More than 20,000 of these claims were from attacks that took place in the states of Bihar,
Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, it said. On Dec 15, a petition with more than 46,000 signatures was submitted to the Obama administration urging it to recognise the violence against Sikhs during November 1984 as "genocide".
Ravi Shankar’s daughters accept Grammy for dad Los Angeles: Two months after his death, Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar has won the best world music album Grammy for "The Living Room Sessions Part 1" spanning a wide range of Indian classical styles. He was also honoured with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement award. The maestro's daughter Anoushka Shankar, who too was nominated in the same category for her album "Traveller" accepted the Grammy on behalf of her late father at the Grammy awards show. Ravi Shankar died in December at the age of 92, after heart surgery at a hospital in La Jolla, California, near San Diego. Earlier, Anoushka and the musician's other daughter, singer Norah Jones accepted the posthumous Grammy Award at a

Jones, who has won nine Grammys of her own, said of her father: "We know he was very excited to be receiving this award.
We really miss him. He lived and breathed music." "I remember him drumming on the breakfast table, trying to get me to learn to play seven (beats) over five. I'm still trying to learn that. We are very happy to accept the award for him." Her half sister added, "It was 60 days ago today that he passed away. It's kind of difficult to be standing up here, like Norah said, I am thrilled that he knew about this award before he passed away at least. But I wish we weren't standing up here for him." Although her mother, Sukanya, was in attendance at the event, she did not take the stage. "She's the reason he was able to be alive as long as he was, so I'm eternally grateful to her," Anoushka said of her mother.
N Korea conducts third N- test, sparks condemnation
Seoul: North Korea conducted its third-ever nuclear test, a move likely to anger its main ally China and increase international action against Pyongyang and its new young leader, Kim Jongun. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned North Korea's test, saying it was a "clear and grave violation" of UN Security Council resolutions. South Korea said the size of the seismic activity indicated a nuclear explosion slightly larger than the North's two previous tests at 6-7 kilotons, although that is still relatively small. The Hiroshima bomb was around 20 kilotons. The US Geological
Survey said that a seismic event measuring 5.1 magnitude had occurred, with North Korea later confirming the nuclear test. "It was confirmed that the nuclear test that was carried out at a high level in a safe and perfect manner using a miniaturized and lighter nuclear device with greater explosive force than previously did not pose any negative impact on the surrounding ecological environment," KCNA said. The test prompted the UN Security Council to call for an emergency meeting and came as China celebrated the lunar new year, potentially increasing embarrassment for Beijing, the North's
sole major economic and diplomatic ally. "I think it will be proven to be a self-defeating and self-suffocating blunder on the part of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)," an Asian diplomat to the United Nations said. "They have chosen the worst timing to conduct this testing ... This will also be an open invitation to the international community to up the ante to corner the DPRK." It may take days to ascertain whether the North used highly enriched uranium for the first time in the nuclear test, a move that would give it a second path to a nuclear weapon.
North Korea has used plutonium in previous tests and needs to conserve its stocks as testing eats into its limited supply of the material that could be used to construct a nuclear bomb. The Vienna-based Comprehensive NuclearTest Ban Treaty Organization, the international atomic test monitor, said the event had hallmarks similar to the North's previous nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. "This act would constitute a clear threat to international peace and security, and challenges efforts made to strengthen global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation," it said.

Manila: The world's largest saltwater crocodile in captivity has died in the Philippines, 17 months after the suspected man-eater was hunted down and put on display for tourists, his caretakers said on Monday. "Lolong", who measured 6.17 metres (20.24 feet), died on Sunday night from a mystery illness inside his small enclosure in Bunawan, a backwater town in the country's remote south. "This is a very, very sad day for us. He had brought fame to our town. We are now thinking of having his remains preserved," town spokeswoman Welinda Elorde said.
Rapist-killer dad, a cleric, goes scot-free
Riyadh: A Saudi preacher accused of raping and torturing his 5-year-old daughter to death has been released from custody after agreeing to pay 'blood money'. Fayhan al-Ghamdi had been accused of killing his daughter Lama, who suffered multiple injuries including a crushed skull, broken back, broken ribs, a broken left arm and extensive bruising and burns. Social workers say she had also been repeatedly raped and burnt. Fayhan al-Ghamdi admitted using a cane and cables to inflict the injuries.
Gwadar port: China ignores Indian concern
Beijing: China said it would go ahead with plans to manage the Gwadar port in Pakistan, which observers claim might pave the way for Beijing's naval presence in the Arabian Sea. India has expressed concern over the Chinese move. "China and Pakistan are friendly neighbours. Over long period of time, Chinese companies have been participating in cooperation projects across the board," said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying during a briefing. China will support projects in Pakistan.
Iraq bombs kill 36
Baghdad: Car bombs struck two outdoor markets and a group of taxi vans in Shiite areas across Iraq last week, killing at least 36 people and wounding nearly 100 in the bloodiest day in more than two months, as minority Sunnis staged mass anti-government protests in a sign of mounting sectarian tensions. Tens of thousands of Sunni protesters rallied in five major cities against Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite accused of monopolising power. Sunnis also complain of official discrimination.

the situation."A leader's job "is to visualise the situation ahead, look for new avenues, and bring about changes in the situation". "We see that in the last six decades we (India) have failed to do that. As a result, there is widespread despondency in the country." "But I think differently," Modi went on, and said in Gujarat he had used the "same constitution, same laws, same rules and regulations, same files, same offices (and) same people" to bring about radical changes. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi made a powerful entry on the national centrestage by aggressively hawking his Gujarat model of development as an alternative to the ruling coalition at the Centre. Modi’s forceful performance at the country’s top commerce college -Shri Ram College of Commerce -- and the response it got from his youthful audience is likely to add to the momentum already building up within the BJP for his formal projection as the party’s prime ministerial candidate even at the cost of losing Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar as an ally. It was Modi’s first public appearance in Delhi since his third straight victory in Gujarat and it came amid steadily growing indications about the larger Sangh Parivar tilting towards showcasing him as BJP’s counter to Rahul Gandhi for the 2014 match up.
He appeared to have pitched it just right, Modi started off by painting himself as an unrepentant optimist. “For me, the glass is always full,” he declared, waving the tumbler kept for him at the lectern. The “we-can-doit” theme ran through the nearly hour-long speech, with Modi asserting that the 21st century would be India’s and declaring that the country can overtake China in manufacturing. Modi appealed for a rebranding of India to make it a global power. Modi underlined that the government's job was not to run businesses but to provide good governance. The root of all our problems is a disease called lack of good governance. In Gujarat, he said, "we have given emphasis on good governance".In an obvious reference to much of India, he said: "Normally, our administration follows the fire-fighting model. When there is a problem, they look for ways to set right
Meeting with PM, seeks parity in gas pricing: Modi met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and expressed his unhappiness over the Centre's refusal to provide gas to the state at the same price at which it is given to Mumbai and Delhi."It was a very good meeting and we had a long discussion during which several different issues came up. I gave an assurance that Gujarat will give full support to all measures taken for the welfare of the people," Modi said.In a memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister, Modi demanded that Gujarat be provided gas at the same rate as places like Delhi and Mumbai."A legal battle is on between us and the government of India. Gujarat is not given gas at the price at which Delhi and Mumbai get it. "The Prime Minister has assured me that he will himself look into these issues and will take decisions for the welfare of the people," he said.
Cept set to take BRTS to Lahore
Who do civic authorities in Pakistan's second largest city — Lahore — turn to when they want to improve their bus service? They have requested experts from Ahmedabad's Cept University to give inputs towards improving Lahore's latest public transport service — Metro Bus System. A small stretch of the multi-crore service is being inaugurated and the authorities have invited Cept experts to Lahore to help them replicate the success of Ahmedabad's Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). This is the first such bus service anywhere in Pakistan. The invitation is from the chief executive officer of the urban unit of Punjab state, Nasir Javed, for an 'urban forum' organ-
ized by state government there. Javed wants Cept experts to stay back for a few meetings and share their experiences in implementing the BRTS network. The forum is for civic authorities in Pakistan to discuss urban issues. The Cept team will reach Lahore on March 11. "The Lahore authorities were interested more in the operations of BRT. They are keen to know about implementing smart card ticketing, GPS enabled services, scheduling and security," said a senior faculty member with Cept University. Some 45 caterpillar, or articulated, buses would run on the inaugural stretch in Lahore between Chungi Amar Sidhu and Gajjumata. A special pur-
pose vehicle the Lahore Transport Company ( LTC) has defined two corridors on which the service will run — Ferozepur Road line extending 28 km and Multan Road Line which is 12 km long. Cept University's associate director Shivavand Swamy said, "The Lahore team had participated in Asian BRT meet in Ahmedabad and now they have invited us there to share our experience."In 2010, Cept University was given the status of centre of excellence in the area of urban transport and research by the central government. The Ahmedabad BRTS has won both national and international awards since it was implementing in October 2009.This includes the International award for Sustainable Transport Award - 2010 at Washington DC, the National Award for Best Mass Transit Rapid System Project - 2009 from the Centre and the International Award for Outstanding Innovations in Public Transportation 2010, Germany.
The Story of Kartikeya – 2
arkandeya continues his story: “Together M with the girl, Lord Indra
went to meet Lord Brahma, the father of the human race. Indra told Brahma, ‘O Lord, please show us a brave and virtuous husband for this girl.’” Brahma said, “I have already decided who it shall be. A son will soon be born who will be a fierce warrior. He will become this girl’s husband. O Indra, he will also become the general of your army and commander of devas against the asuras.” Indra thanked Lord Brahma and went to the place in the heavens where all the rishis, led by the great sage Vashishta, were performing a yagna or sacrifice. There he drank Somaras along with the other gods. The rishis were throwing in various herbs and materials of homage into the sacrificial fire. They first poured ghee into the fire, invoking Lord Agni. This was the same Agni whom the two rishis, Bhrigu and Angiras had carried into the sun when it was in yoga with the moon.
Kejriwal calls Goa's amended Lokayukta law 'stupid' Anti-corruption crusader Arvind Kejriwal launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar calling his controversial amendments to the Lokayukta law "stupid". Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal, founder of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), also wondered why Parrikar, whose image was that of an honest person, was looking to protect corrupt people. "Manohar Parrikar is said to be an honest person. Why is he doing this? Why is he trying to protect corrupt people? What are the pressures on him? Is he giving a message that development is linked to corruption," said Kejriwal, asking people to outright reject the amended law. "The BJP and the Parrikar government has cheated the people of Goa. His government's amendments are weakening the Goa Lokayukta act," he said, adding that the pre-poll promise made by the BJP to bring in a strict and strong Lokayukta had been betrayed after coming to power in March last year. The bureaucrat-turnedcrusader-turned-politician also said that postamendments, the public ombudsman would serve as a "puppet."
Agni emerged from the sun and entered the sacrificial fire. He accepted the mantras of all the rishis and the homage they paid to him. Agni then gave the materials of homage to the other gods and was about to leave when he saw the
wives of the rishis, sleeping. Bedecked with ornaments, they looked so beautiful that Agni got excited. He wanted to cojoin with all of them and so was about to enter their minds. The daughter of Daksha Prajapati called Svaha was also present at the yagna. She loved Agni dearly and desired physical
union with him. She saw that Agni had become excited seeing the wives of the seven rishis. She took the form of Shiva, the wife of Angiras, and came to Agni, claiming to be Angiras’ wife. Agni proceeded to mate with her. One by one, Svaha took the form of each of the rishi’s wives and had intercourse with Agni. However, she was not able to take the form of Arundhati, the wife of the rishi Vasishta. This was because Arundhati had done a lot of tapas and was very powerful. Thus, Svaha took on six different forms and mated with Agni six times. Svaha then realised that if anyone were to see her in the form of the rishi’s wives, they who were innocent could be falsely accused of having union with Agni. So she quickly took the form of a female eagle. In a vessel, she collected the sperm from the five unions and flew away with it. To be continued…

India rejects OIC suggestion to allow mission to J&K
Strongly rejecting Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's suggestion of allowing an OIC factfinding mission to Jammu and Kashmir to assess rights situation there, India said on Friday the grouping has no "locus standi" on such matters and termed suggestions to this effect by Pakistan foreign minister as "propagandist". "The OIC has no locus standi on matters concerning the internal affairs of India or the recent incidents on the LoC. We have already clarified that UNMOGIP has no relevance in regard to the latter. "The propagandist suggestions made in the foreign minister's statement are neither new nor helpful," official spokesperson in the ministry of external affairs said. He was responding to a question regarding the statement made by the foreign minister of Pakistan at the recently concluded OIC contact group meeting on Jammu and Kashmir held in Cairo. Backing Pakistan, the OIC had asked India to allow an OIC fact-finding mission, international rights groups and humanitarian organisations to visit Jammu and Kashmir to
assess the rights situation. A joint communique, adopted at an OIC summit that concluded in Cairo, "called upon India to allow the OIC fact-finding mission, the international human rights groups and humanitarian organisations to visit Jammu and Kashmir", a statement issued by the Pakistan foreign office had said on Thursday. The communique had also welcomed Pakistan's proposal for an investigation by the UN military observers group for India and Pakistan into recent ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC). It expressed "deep concern" over the ceasefire violations. The communique had further called on India to undertake an "independent investigation into the discovery of mass graves and ensure free and fair trial of those responsible" for "heinous crimes". The Pakistani delegation to the summit was led by foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar, who had called for an probe into the ceasefire violations on the LoC by the OIC. The move came in the wake of India's rejection of Pakistan's call for a probe by the UNMOGIP.

Stampede claims 36 lives at Allahabad rail station
Life term means entire life: Centre By AV Correspondent In what has taken the prison authorities aback, a tunnel, leading from the ‘Chhota Chakkar’ barrack in the Sabarmati Central Jail to a gutter outside the jail, was being dug for the last 5-6 months. The tunnel was said to be about half-way when it was detected inside this high security prison. The 18 feet tunnel dug by the accused in the Ahmedabad blast case has put the jail authorities in the dock. The shocking and daring act by some inmates was detected in the early hours of Monday. Jail authorities say that 14 accused in the Ahmedabad blast case, including three engineers, had been clandestinely at work to dig an escape route. Housed inside the barrack number four or chhota chakri, the 14 inmates were carrying out the digging exercise near a toilet just adjacent to a garden were they were working as part of their routine work. The 18 feet tunnel had a five feet wide opening and
ran parallel to a drainage line which would create an escape route. Officials at the prison say that the inmates were using their expertise to dig up the tunnel near a garden which is just near the barrack number four where they used to work in the garden for three hours and also used for washing their utensils. For the high security prison, which houses almost 3,700 inmates, the incident has brought into focus the lax monitoring inside the prison. The Sabarmati jail houses 3,700 inmates, 900 more than the capacity.
Realising the laxity, the authorities tried to downplay the incident. “This is a jail made by the Britishers, the walls are 21 feet high even the depth of these walls are 21 feet, even if they would have succeeded in making the tunnel, it would have been impossible for them to flee through the tunnel,’’ said P C Thakur, I G Prisons. Meanwhile, the Ahmedabad crime branch has been asked to investigate the case even as the jail authorities were revamping the security set up inside the prison which also includes some hardened convicts and terrorists.
way, and officials claimed the number of devotees in the Kumbh city had already crossed 20 millions at noon. Officials expected by the night, the number of pilgrims taking holy dip would cross the three-crore mark. In the Kumbh mela area, spread across 1,936.5 hectares and 14 sectors, Akharas leaders and their
followers began their preparations for the shahi snan, early. Nagas drank cups of tea to beat the early morning chill, painting their bodies with ash, while devotees decorated their Guru’s rath (vehicles) for the formal processions. Mahanirvani Atal Akhara lead the first shashi snan at 6.10 am, leading an hour-long procession with devotees and followers in tow. Uttar Pradesh Police, which was placed on high alert following the handing of Afzal Guru, was deployed across the mela grounds to manage crowds and to apprehend any untoward activity. With a sea of humanity descending upon the snan ghats since early morning.
More than 30 mn people take a dip on mauni amavasya
Some emerged elated, others were in tears. Carrying plastic gerrycans of muddy water from the Ganges, a dip in the holy Sangam moved, one way or another, the many millions who swarmed the ghats on Sunday morning at Allahbad. At 6.30 pm, the Shahi snan on Mauni Amavasya was still under-
The Centre has cautioned state governments against granting remission of life sentence in a “wholesale manner”, where either a death sentence has been commuted to life or where life term is given for an offence carrying death penalty. The advisory comes when the Centre has promulgated that life sentence awarded for aggravated sexual assault will cover a convict’s natural life and is supposed to be a deterrent against the growing trend where states governments have freely remitted life sentence; virtually reducing it to 14 years imprisonment in disregard of the requirement laid down under law. “Notwithstanding anything contained in Section 432, where a sentence of imprisonment for life is imposed on conviction of a person for an offence for which death is one of the punishments provided by law, or where a sentence of death imposed on a person has been commuted under Section 433 into one of imprisonment for life, such person shall not be released from prison unless he had served at least fourteen years of imprisonment,” Section 433A states.
At least 36 people died and scores of others injured on Sunday evening when a stampede broke out at the Allahabad Junction teeming with pilgrims returning from the Mahakumbh. The incident occurred around 7 pm, allegedly when a railing leading to a footbridge over platform no. 6 collapsed.Divisional Railway Manager of Allahabad, Harindra Rao, said 10 people died at the station itself. Rao also said over 20 people are undergoing treatment at the Railway Hospital. According to eyewitnesses, there were more than 4,000 people on the 150-metre long bridge, and many of them were leaning on the railing. While hundreds of people were trying to climb the stairs of the bridge, many others were trying to come down. Suddenly, GRP men resorted to lathicharge (to clear the bridge), resulting in railing collapse and subsequent stampede. Rao, however, said

people were not lathicharged and the police only attempted to regulate the movement of the crowd by asking passengers to stand in lineRelatives of the victims have complained that there were no facilities at the railway station and that authorities took more than two hours to act after the stampede started. They say there was only one doctor at the station attending to people who were injured in the stampede. Both the DIG Railway and the DRM have denied reports that a portion of the banister collapsed under the weight of passengers jostling for space on the over-bridge. The state government has announced a compensation of Rs. 5,00,000 to the kin of those killed in the incident and Rs. 100,000 to the injured. Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru hanged
Continued from page 1
Embarrassed and angered by Kashmiri separatist leader YasinMalik's decision to share the stage with 26/11 mastermind HafizSaeed in Islamabad to mourn the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, the government is weighing the option of revoking his passport on grounds of national security. It also seems certain the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader will be questioned by security agencies as
soon as he returns home to explain his hobnobbing with India's most-wanted terror fugitive, almost giving Saeed legitimacy as a champion of the Kashmiri cause. Participating in funeral prayers for Afzal held in absentia by pro-Kashmir groups in Islamabad, Malik called his hanging a "blot on Indian democracy". Malik is in Pakistan to visit his wife, a Pakistani national. Even as the pro-azadi JKLF leader urged leaders
from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to organize public protests against Guru's hanging, Saeed, who was to lead the funeral prayers at 2pm, reached the venue ahead of schedule and left after urging the Pakistani government not to maintain silence on the Kashmir issue. Incidentally, this is not the first time that Kashmiri separatists rubbed shoulders with Saeed. A moderate Hurriyat delegation led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq had
reportedly met Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin in December during a visit to Pakistan, much to the chagrin of the Indian security agencies. Considering the possibility of his meeting terrorists and criticizing the government during more such trips abroad, there is a good reason to seize his passport," said the official. Sources in the security establishment hinted Malik may be detained after he returns to India.
the execution of Guru even as BJP questioned the delay in carrying out the death sentence. Both Congress and the BJP said the hanging of Guru, a Jaish-e-Mohammed militant, would send a message to terror outfits that India would not tolerate terrorism. Questioning the delay in Guru's hanging, BJP said it should have happened much earlier after the confirmation of the capital punishment by the Supreme Court in 2005. In Chennai, Information and Broadcasting minister Manish Tewari said the decision to hang Guru was not based on political considerations. "The process of Article 72 unfolded and once the mercy petition was rejected by the President the law took its own course," Tewari told a press conference. "We woke up to this news and we are very happy with the decision of the government. Though this should have been done earlier, it is a welcome move. Only the government can tell why there was a delay," said Gautam Negi, the son of Matbar Singh Negi of parliament's watch and ward staff who was killed in the attack. "We are relieved now," said Avdesh, whose wife Kamlesh Yadav was also killed in the Dec 13, 2001 attack on the Indian parliament. In Srinagar, People's Democratic Party

environment protection. He told them that Gujarat is the first state in India and among the four states in the world to have a separate department on climate change. Briefing the lawmakers about Gujarat's advances in solar energy, Modi told them about Asia’s largest solar park in Charanka in Patan district and about state government's roof-top solar policy. The post also spoke of Gujarat's work in other forms of renewable energy, including wind energy. European Union envoys invite Modi for lunch Earlier on January 7 Modi was invited to the Chanakyapuri residence of Michael Steiner, Germany's envoy to India. Modi spent the next two hours with Steiner and his other guests - ambassadors of all countries in the European Union. Over lunch, he faced some "tough" questions on the 2002 riots in Gujarat, and he answered them all patiently. He also told the envoys about his model of governance, and his ideas for India. The meeting was the first European envoys had had with Modi since the
riots nearly 11 years ago. Coming three months after British high commissioner Sir James Bevan met Modi in Gandhinagar, the meeting signalled the end of the EU's diplomatic boycott of him. "Yes, he (Modi) had lunch with us in January," Joao Cravinho, the EU ambassador in New Delhi, confirmed. Possibly apprehensive of reactions around the world, both sides had been extremely discreet about the meeting so far. "This was an informal meet, as we wanted to engage with him now," a top diplomatic source said. He added that "the important point is that, unlike the British and the Danish envoys, the European ambassadors did not go and meet him in Ahmedabad... rather, he came to meet us." Another diplomatic source said, "We decided to invite him for this lunch for precisely three reasons: he has been re-elected for the third time, he has got political legitimacy, and he has made his ambition quite clear that he wants to play a national role. We cannot ignore him now." Sources present at the
meeting, however, insisted that concern over "human rights" remained at the heart of the envoys' engagement with Modi. "If we have to address those concerns, we have to engage with him. That was made abundantly clear to him during the luncheon conversation. And last year, we have seen some movement in the judicial process which is somewhat encouraging," said a source, referring to the August 2012 court verdict that sent MLA Maya Kodnani to prison for 28 years for the Naroda massacres of 2002. In March 2002, EU ambassadors had resolved to break diplomatic contact with the Modi government at the levels of ambassador, deputy chief of mission and consul-general. A review in 2008 had decided to extend the freeze. Cracks in the consensus appeared in 2011, when the Danish ambassador to India met Modi at least a couple of times. In July 2012, Ambassador Cravinho recommended to Brussels that the EU should continue to abide by the 2002 resolution. However, in October
2012, the government of British Prime Minister David Cameron established diplomatic contact with Modi at the highest level. The breaking of the "consensus" by Britain which chose to inform EU partners of its decision just before going public with it - had annoyed the EU diplomatic community, with most ambassadors privately questioning the timing of the British decision, barely two months before assembly elections in Gujarat. 2002 riots were unfortunate, Modi tells envoys During the meeting Modi told the envoys that the 2002 riots in the state were unfortunate. Steiner told reporters that he had always maintained that Germany had no intention of interfering in Gujarat Assembly elections and that it will take a "fresh look" after the election results. "That is exactly what we were doing and part of it is to talk directly to Modi. India is a democracy. We respect democratic institutions. We respect election results in India and we have full trust in
The arrival of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Buddhist and Hindu shrines in the country was greeted by protests from Tamils everywhere, from Bodh Gaya to Tirupati, with one man arrested for trying to immolate himself in Chennai where the protests were led by DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. The temple town of Tirupati saw angry protests by political workers from Tamil Nadu, who converged in thousands to oppose Rajapaksa’s visit. Nearly 2,500 protesters, who dubbed Rajapaksa anti-Tamil, were arrested throughout the day by the Chittoor police with section 144 in force to prevent violence. Rajapaksa is scheduled for a darshan of Lord Venkateshwara before
leaving for Colombo. Alerted by Tamil Nadu intelligence wing that Tamil outfits will stage protests against the Lankan president, Chittoor police had thrown a security blanket from the airport at Renigunta to the temple
town. Throughout the day, even as Tamil Nadu politicians shouted slogans against Rajapaksa in Chennai, hundreds of political workers descended on the town since morning. One poster carried by the protesters said “Chase
out destroyer of 2076 Hindu temples, killer of Hindu temple priests.” Stalin, comparing Rajapaksa to Hitler and Mussolini, said his blood stained hands could never be cleaned. More than three thousand cadres gathered for the protest. Even as he took off from Colombo, Tamil political parties in India took to the streets in Tamil Nadu, New Delhi and Tirupati to denounce the visit by Rajapaksa. Holding placards demanding "Strict Action Against Rajapaksa" and shouting slogans against him, Vaiko and several supporters gathered in Parliament Street in the heart of Delhi. They denounce Rajapaksa for ruling out autonomy for Tamil areas.
India considers revoking Yasin Malik’s passport
expressed disappointment over Guru's hanging, saying the "sensitivities" of the people of Jammu and Kashmir should have been taken into account before taking the decision. At least 40 people were injured in the day-long clashes between security forces and violent protestors on Saturday, even as authorities clamped curfew on the entire valley in the wake of Guru's hanging. Defying curfew restrictions, violent mobs indulged in stone throwing at security personnel in Baramulla, Srinagar and south Kashmir's Anantnag districts. A senior police official said the injured included 23 policemen who were controlling violent mobs during the day. All the local cable operators were instructed by the authorities to suspend their operations in Srinagar. The internet connectivity also remained suspended in most parts of the valley. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said union home minister Susilkumar Shinde had called him Friday evening to inform him about the decision to hang Afzal Guru. Omar said the home minister asked him to take steps to maintain law and order in the valley and assured him of the central government's support in this regard. Pak reacts cautiously Meanwhile, Pakistan reacted cautiously to the execution of Guru saying it did not want to "go into details" of his trial.
its judicial system. Because of this respect and trust, we are now in a new phase," the German Ambassador said. However, he refused to give further details of the meeting but other sources in the know said, during the January 7 meeting with EU delegation, Modi said he would abide by the judicial verdict and that these events were unfortunate. Asked if the EU, which has boycotted Modi for over 10 years after the riots, was softening up, Cravinho said, "The accountability of what happened in 2002, I think is the matter that is of interest to Indians and is of interest for people around the world." He said that in India, there is a certain amount of emotion attached to what happened in 2002. "And it is a matter that we will follow with great interest...," he said. According to the sources, EU countries feel this is the right time to engage with Modi, who has been elected third time and has no judicial verdict against him. There is also a feeling among these countries that he is a player at the national level.
Modi invited to attend European Parliament
There is also an invitation to attend the European Business Meet in Brussels later this year,” Modi’s blog said. Modi to visit UK in May? According to a report appearing in “Rajasthan Patrika” Modi is likely to visit UK in May. For Modi’s UK visit, protocol permission from the prime minister’s office (PMO) was required and that was on the agenda of his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his visit to Delhi on February 6. With Modi emerging as global figure, his visit to UK will be fruitful for both the countries. 'Black day' for Indian sports as IOC drops wrestling from Olympics
As Praveen Togadia faces denunciation and arrest for his provocative rhetoric, BJP leaders seem uneasy about the way the VHP leader upped the ante. Saffron strategists see the provocation from the VHP firebrand as an unnecessary distraction at a time when they were hoping to pin Congress on secular issues like poor governance and the anemic economy. "We will be comfortable taking Congress on the Hindu rate of growth instead of Hindutva," said a senior BJP leader. He was articulating the party's hope of cashing in on the discontent over sputtering growth, as well as the feeling that choice of Hindutva as the battle theme for 2014 will help Congress by helping it dodge questions about its poor scorecard in government, consolidate Muslims behind it and recruit allies from parties who would not like to lose Muslim votes. BJP leaders see profit in keeping Hindutva on the backburner also because it does not want to inconvenience its ally, JD(U) boss Nitish Kumar. The popular Bihar chief minister, who has successfully made forays into the Muslim constituency of Lalu Prasad, is already under pressure to prove his secular credentials in view of the looming prospect of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi getting projected as BJP's prime ministerial choice. An aggressive return to Hindutva can shrink Nitish's options, impelling him to look elsewhere. In fact, many in the BJP feel that Togadia's recourse to rabble rousing can even work to Modi's detriment. The Gujarat CM has tried
Praveen Togadia
to live down his "communal" image by training the spotlight on his achievements on the development front, and by projecting himself as a man who is obsessed with growth. This is in perfect accord with the dominant school within the BJP. The sense of intrigue stems from estranged equations between Modi and Togadia, and the widespread perception that the latter has tried to sabotage the Gujarat CM in two successive state elections. Modi got the better of his rival in both instances. Not just that, he also enjoys the support of Togadia's senior colleague in VHP, the veteran Ashok Singhal who is believed to have had a role in tilting the debate in Modi's favour. However, many in the BJP feel that Togadia, given his tenacity as well as the intensity of tension with Modi, may not acquiesce to the Gujarat CM's emergence as the top saffron leader so easily. FIR filed against Togadia: As the demand for action against Togadia over his alleged hate speech intensified, it is being learnt that an FIR has been filed against the VHP leader at Nanded, Maharashtra. The police action
British Gujaratis seek CM Modi’s help in restoring LondonAhmedabad direct flight The British Gujaratis are now urging Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to take up their plight with the UPA government, restoring the LondonAhmedabad direct flight. After the sweeping victory of Mr Modi, many readers of Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar have not only called us to pass on their congratulatory messages to the re elected Chief Minister, but have also desperately sought help for the problems they continue to face, during their regular trips to India. A petition campaign was launched by AV+GS and National Congress of Gujarati Organisations (UK) and thousands of
people signed it. There were a number of letters pleading for direct flights which were also forwarded to the Chairman of Air India including from British Gujaratis and their leaders like Lord Bhikhu Parekh, Lord Navnit Dholakia, MPs Keith Vaz, Stephen Pound and several others as well as the Congress, BJP and NCP leaders of Gujarat. Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar are now relaunching the petition to restart the campaign in order to convince Mr Modi to take up the plights of his Gujarati friends in India. If you agree with us, send us your view and details and we will forward it to CM Modi.
comes after t h e Maharashtra government ordered an inquiry into the provocative speeches made by Togadia in Nanded last m o n t h a g a i n s t members of a particular community. The state government, after being asked by the Centre to investigate into allegations of Togadia’s provocative speeches, assured it of due legal process. "The Home Ministry's advise is clear.
Once they have confirmed forensic evidence, appropriate action as per law must be taken against Togadia," an official said in New Delhi. At a public meeting at Bhokar town in Nanded district of Maharashtra on January 22- details of which are now surfacing after a video-recording was posted online Togadia had allegedly attacked Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi and members of a particular community. The VHP leader had also triggered a controversy by making a controversial speech on February 1 near Adilabad in Andhra Pradesh.
The wrestling fraternity in India reacted sharply to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to drop wrestling from the 2020 Olympic games. With the graph of Indian wrestling going upwards, the decision comes as a big jolt to young and budding wrestlers. Mahabali Satpal, coach of both Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt, reacted strongly and said that it's the 'black day' for Indian wrestling. "I cannot understand this decision by the IOC. Why have they done this to wrestling, which is one of the oldest sporting disciplines of the Olympic games? It's a black day for Indian as well as world wrestling," said an emotional Satpal. He urged the sports ministry and the
Government of India to take up this matter to the highest body and make sure that wrestling gets back its due place. "The Government of India and the sports ministry has to protest this decision and take up this issue to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) so that wrestling gets back its place in the Olympics," added Satpal. Citing that wrestling is a highly popular sport even amongst the western countries, Satpal said, "The TRP (Television Rating Points) of wrestling events at the London Olympics was quite high and it's a popular sport amongst the audience. Besides, powerful nations like Russia and USA also take part in the Olympics. So, its quite baffling why the IOC took this decision."

By AV Correspondent ount Girnar is a sacred hill both for the Hindus M and Jains. The Jains call it
Mt. Neminath. According to history, Siddhas have used it as a retreat to undertake tapasya since ancient times. The 3,660 feet hill is connected with Lord Krishna. When Kalayavan, apparently a warrior of foreign origin, was chasing him, the Lord got the better of the powerful adversary in a curious way. Raja Muchkund was sleeping in one of the caves of Raivatachal mountain (the ancient name for Girnar). He was taking rest after fighting on behalf of the gods. After his exertions Muchkund had only one desire – rest and repose. He got a boon that whoever disturbed his sleep would be reduced to ashes when he opened his eyes. This boon Krishna knew. What better way to get rid of, apparently a warrior of foreign origin, was chasing him, the Lord got the Kalayavan. So he pretended as if he was running away from Kalayavan and led him to the cave where the king was sleeping. Krishna covered Muchkund with his upper cloth. Kalayavan after the long chase mistook the sleeping figure for Krishna and woke him up and was reduced to ashes. Girnar

ating raw fruits and vegetables will keep you feeling better, look fit, E become healthier and live longer. Listed
below are twenty health benefits of eating salad. Hopefully this will encourage you to add salads as a staple to your diet. Fresh fruit and vegetables are delicious, so mixing them in an array of different combinations to create a salad ensures exciting meals. Salads are delicious and knowing that they are also good for you, adds to the delicious factor. Visually satisfying: First, you eat food with your eyes. Salads have varied textures, shapes, sizes and colors which make them visually appealing and satisfying. We enjoy foods that entice our eyes and also eat more of them. Try different combinations: A salad does not have to be just lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. There are thousands of ingredient combinations possible for making a salad. You could have a different salad every day for years! Decrease calories: As long as you don’t add a bunch of fried ingredients that swim in dressing, salads are low in calories and can help you lose weight. Adding fruit and good fats such as olive oil, nuts and avocados to a salad enable the body to absorb lycopene (in tomatoes), lutein (in dark green vegetables), iron (in spinach) and other nutrients. Add fiber: Eating healthy foods aid in helping the body feel energetic and filled with vitality. Salads add fiber to the diet which reduces cholesterol and constipation. High fiber salads eaten before a meal tend to help you consume less of the higher calorie foods served afterward. This fiber fullness side effect will help you lose weight. Crunch and munch: Eating a variety of textures keeps mealtime interesting. Salad ingredients can add a nice crunch which is much better for you than munching on cookies or potato chips. Eat salads to stop the craving. Easy and fast to make: Compared to making homemade lasagne or waiting for Chinese food to be delivered, making a salad is relatively quick. The basic salad only requires that you wash and cut the vegetables. No baking is required. After buying vegetables, washing and storing them in the refrigerator decreases the time it will take you later to prepare a salad. High in vitamins and minerals: Salads are high in vitamins and minerals such as: vitamin A (immunity), vitamin C (fight infection, boost iron absorption, maintain healthy bones, gums and skin), vitamin K (strong bones, heal wounds, assists blood to clot), calcium (build strong teeth and bones, nerves to carry messages, muscles contract), alpha- and beta-carotene
(antioxidant that help protect against cancer and heart disease), iron (maintain healthy blood) and many other vitamins and minerals. Perfect meal during summer: Stifling heat in the summer not only curbs the appetite, but also lessens the desire to slave over a hot stove. That makes eating a salad the perfect meal when it is so hot in the summer months. Since there is no cooking required to make a salad, you won’t have to worry about adding extra heat from an oven. Increases vegetable intake: The perfect way to increase the number of vegetables in your diet is to eat a variety of salads often. Eating plenty of raw vegetables ensures that you are getting the benefit of the enzymes found in them. These enzymes enable your body to absorb the nutrients found in the food. More nutrient absorption leads to better health. Everyone can make it: You simply can’t go wrong when adding basic salad ingredients, so it isn’t necessary to be a chef or even know how to cook in order to make a delicious salad. Children can easily assist in preparing salads. It is also the perfect meal to motivate children towards eating a variety of vegetables since they are more apt to eat what they help prepare. Unlimited options: There is no end to the number of recipes for salads and dressings. The only limiting factor is your imagination. Be the farmer: It is possible to grow most, if not all, the vegetables in a salad. Not only is it convenient to pick the amount of vegetables needed for a salad from your own garden, but you will know exactly how everything was grown. As an added bonus, you will feel a sense of pride at being able to provide for yourself. Makes everyone happy: There are numberless types of salads which means that everyone can have a different salad at the same table by simply adjusting the ingredients according to their likes and dislikes. Do not cause bloating: Do you hate that super full feeling and the bloating that happens after eating a fatty meal? Well, salads do not cause bloating. Salads help to fill you up, but they do not feel heavy nor do they make you feel lethargic. Wards off disease: Salads help protect the body from diseases such as cancer and heart disease because they are high in fiber which improves digestive health. The raw fruits and vegetables in a salad also are antioxidants. Exciting: Salads are so varied, that they are exciting. Really! Think about it! You never know what you will find under the next leafy green.

Relationship Rules Part 2
hank you readers for your comments on last weeks article. Seeing as though the subject of relationship rules resonated with so many people and it is Valentines Day this Thursday, I felt that it would be beneficial to you if I write a Part 2. Happy reading all: People can often forget themselves when they are in relationship and it is important to remember the following fundamentals so you can relish and enjoy every relationship you have. Firstly, your time with others is a blessing. No material item can replace the sentiment of appreciating the person you are with. When you value and become grateful for being in the presence of someone, they feel it. When you listen to them actively and support them (even if your views differ) you are teaching yourself how to love without condition. Taking this approach makes you feel light and
has a positively profound effect on the other person. This as a result strengthens your relationships and creates bonds that are difficult to break. Secondly, little things go a long way. Stephen Covey talked about ‘The Emotional Bank Accounted’. This is where you ‘credit’ someone as opposed to ‘debit’ him or her through your actions. Recognizing the contribution and strength of others is a great act of service. This investment in them does not cost you a cent and as a result will make you and them feel amazing. Never disrespect anyone in public, it is a very damaging thing to do to him or her and also damages your credibility and makes you look like a bully. Even in heated situations, take a loving stance by being light and seeking harmony. What do you think you will gain by doing this? Thirdly, keep your promises. If you say you
Hot food in plastic plates cause kidney stones
Plastic plates are a favourite of parents and picnic-goers the world over, but new research suggests that eating hot meals on melamine crockery could actually be harmful to health. Taiwanese researchers have found that hot temperatures increase the amount of melamine we are exposed to - and this can increase the risk of kidney stones, the Daily Mail reported. They studied two groups of people who ate piping hot noodle soup. One group ate from

melamine bowls, the other from ceramic bowls. Urine samples were collected before the meal, and every two hours for 12 hours following the meal. Three weeks later, the volunteers consumed the same kind of soup but the type of bowl they used was reversed. Urine samples were collected again. Total melamine levels in urine for 12 hours after eating the soup was 8.35
are going to do something, do it. Don’t make promises you can’t keep. If you stay true to your word, overtime this builds your credibility and trust. This makes you look good and reliable. Be honest in the same vein. Of you can’t do something, be frank and honest as to why you can’t do it. Be true to yourself and the other person. Lastly, never stop communicating. Be calm and share your thoughts and feelings. Have a trusted friend that you can talk to, it will make you feel better and will help you to regroup and appreciate your relationship. If you don’t feel comfortable talking, write things down and have a brain dump of your thoughts. Downloading your thoughts will make you feel lighter. micrograms when the participants ate out of the melamine bowls versus about 1.3 micrograms when they ate out of ceramic bowls. Lead researcher by Chia-Fang Wu, of Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan, said: "Melamine tableware may release large amounts of melamine when used to serve high-temperature foods." He noted that both higher temperatures (from hot soups, for example) or more acidic foods can encourage melamine to contaminate food, especially in older or low-quality kitchenware. But he added that the amount of melamine released into food and beverages from melamine tableware varies by brand, so the results of this study of one brand may not be generalised to other brands.

Armstrong tops Forbes' list of ‘most disliked athletes’
Senior India batsman Sachin Tendulkar equalled Sunil Gavaskar's record number of first class hundreds by cracking a superb century against Rest of India on day three of the Irani Cup. Coming into the match one short of fellow Mumbaikar Gavaskar in the Indian record list of 81 first class hundreds, Tendulkar struck his 30th ton in his other first class cricket matches and 18th for his home state Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium. Gavaskar had notched up 81 first class hundreds between 1971 and 1997, including 34 in 125 Tests for India. In the course of his superb tuning up innings for the upcoming four-Test series against Australia, the 39-year-old Tendulkar also crossed another milestone -25,000 runs in first class
Sachin Tendulkar
cricket. Tendulkar, who has 51 Test hundreds in 194 games, needed 104 when he went out to bat in his 479th innings in first class cricket for reaching the second landmark. Coming in at three down, one place below his normal batting order as night watchman Shardul Thakur was sent in ahead of him, Tendulkar played some breathtaking shots, especially in the arc between long off
Sunil Gavaskar
and cover, to bring up his new landmark in his 303rd first class game. He completed the 100 with a single off S Sreesanth who tried to unsettle him with short-pitched balls. Tendulkar took 139 balls and 228 minutes to bring up his hundred, which was enshrined with 12 fours and two sixes -- one each off left arm spinner Pragyan Ojha and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, the second one also bringing his half century.
Tendulkar's maiden first class hundred had also come at the same ground against Gujarat in December, 1988. In international cricket, the iconic batsman has 100 hundreds, including 49 in ODIs, a format from which he retired before the home series against Pakistan recently. Break-up of 100s of Gavaskar and Tendulkar in first class cricket: Gavaskar: 34 in Tests, 20 in Ranji Trophy, 3 in Irani Cup, 6 in Duleep Trophy, 1 for Rest of the World against England (his last first class game), 2 in county cricket for Somerset and 15 in other games including a century against Sri Lanka in 1974-75 in unofficial Test. Tendulkar: 51 in Tests, 18 in Ranji Trophy, 2 in Irani Cup, 3 in Duleep Trophy, 1 in county cricket for Yorkshire and 6 in other games.
Indian athletes win 46 medals Fair trade regulator fines BCCI at Special Winter Olympics `520 mn for abusing monopoly
Children battling poverty and disability bringing medals home is an example of triumph over adversity. The Indian contingent at the Special Winter Olympics in South Korea made the country proud as it won 46 medals. They left India in obscurity, but on their return, at least for a day, the athletes were celebrated, proudly showing off their medals after a record haul in South Korea. Achieving this feat has not been easy. Several of these children have severe financial constraints, but they have not let that stand in their way. Rajkumar's father owns a hand cart and earns just Rs 4,500. His entire income is barely enough for ten sessions of figure skating train-
ing. But Rajkumar has always been taught to dream big. Despite his hyperactivity disorder, the 18-year-old never took a backward step and his reward was a gold and silver at the games. Just like Rajkumar, Suman and Alpana, too, come from humble backgrounds. Their parents sometimes don't have enough money to put food on the table. But they always supported the aspirations of their children who can now proudly call themselves Olympic champions. Each of these kids is an inspiration, each of them is a hero. The all important question now is if their feats will encourage more Indians to come forward and support their ambitions.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) multi-million-dollar deals involving the Indian Premier League (IPL) during Lalit Modi's reign as the leading administrator, and its fierce move to stop the rival Indian Cricket League (ICL) from functioning, has invited the wrath of some government investigative agencies. Market watchdog Competition Commission of India (CCI) has asked the national cricket board to stop denying access to potential competitors in the market, which is a result of the board going all out from 2007 to 2011 in its bid to wipe out the Zee-floated ICL. The fair trade regulator has also imposed a penalty of Rs 522.4 million on the board for abuse of its dominant position, which led to the failure of ICL. The commission issued the orders after investigating a complaint filed by a Delhibased cricket fan Surinder Singh Barmi. He had alleged irregulari-
N. Srinivasan
ties in the grant of franchise rights for IPL team ownership, grant of media rights and award of sponsorship rights and other local contracts related to the T20 tournament. The CCI has directed BCCI to "cease and desist from any practice in future denying market access to potential competitors, including inclusion of similar clauses in any agreement in future". The BCCI was slapped with a $433m income tax notice last year, adding to the list of complexities that have been growing recently. The Enforcement Directorate had also recently fined IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and its owners and directors for serious Fema violations.
Disgraced US cyclist Lance Armstrong has topped a new list by Forbes magazine of the most disliked athletes. According to the list, Armstrong narrowly passed American football player Manti Te'o, who reportedly faked the death of a fictitious girlfriend to gain appeal, to be on the top of the list, after both got only 15 per cent votes in a survey, Sport24 reports. Te'o, who got second place in Heisman Trophy voting as last season's top player which made him a top National Football League prospect, reportedly faked the death of a fictitious girlfriend to gain sympathy. Third on the list, at 19 per cent appeal, is 14-time major golf champion Tiger Woods, following an epic sex scandal that destroyed his marriage and damaged his marketing image and sponsorship deals. Other sportsmen on the list are NFL Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, Alex Rodriguez of Major League Baseball's New York Yankees, NFL Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, US stock car racer Kurt Busch, World Peace's teammate Kobe Bryant and NFL Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
Pak postpone T20 Super League
Organisers of Pakistan's first major Twenty20 league, which has been hit by a warning over security fears, postponed the contest but said it was due to the "overwhelming response" from players. The Pakistan Cricket Board had planned to stage the Pakistan Super League (PSL) from March 26 as the first step towards reviving international cricket in the country. No international cricket has been played in Pakistan since militants attacked the Sri Lankan team bus during a Test match in Lahore in 2009 and the country is still rocked by almost daily bombings and shootings. The PCB says around 80 foreign players have already signed for the league but a warning from the Federation of Cricketers Association to international players not to tour has also prompted Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa to hint their players will not feature in the PSL.
Doping widespread in Australian sport, finds probe
Australian sport is awash with peptides, hormones and other banned drugs with whole teams believed to be doping, an official report said. Some professionals were taking substances not yet approved for human use, the Australian Crime Commission said in its report delivered after a year-long investigation. The commission also alleged that criminal elements might have infiltrated professional sports and fixed matches to manipulate betting markets. It found dope being administered by sports scientists in cahoots with coaches, doctors and pharmacists. Justice Minister Jason Clare said the findings were “shocking and would disgust Australian sports fans.” But he did not reveal which clubs and which sports stars were fingered by the investigators because that might impede criminal charges being laid.
Rebel Indian tennis players now come up an association
They might have signed peace with the All India Tennis Association but that has not stopped the disgruntled players, led by Somdev Devvarman, from forming the Indian Tennis Players Association to handle "contemporary issues" that have not been addressed by AITA. A few days after ending their revolt and making themselves available for the Davis Cup tie against Indonesia later this year, the 'rebels' have now come up with the ITPA to address players' concerns. "A Not-for-Profit Association, the ITPA is being constituted as a Section 25 Company and is built on the premise that the existing
Mahesh Bhupathi
structure of tennis administration in the country does not represent or adequately address contemporary issues faced by players in the country," the players said in a statement. The founding members of the ITPA include Jaidip Mukerjea, Mahesh Bhupathi, Karti P
Rohan Bopanna
Chidambaram, Enrico Piperno, Manisha Malhotra, Prahalad Srinath, Somdev Devvarman, Rohan Bopanna, Aditya Sachdeva and Mustafa Ghouse. "We believe that the ITPA will provide the players a voice that will stand united in our concerns and suggestions for the improve-
Somdev Devvarman
ment of the sport in the country," said Somdev. Mukerjea has been made interim president of the body. "Mr Jaidip Mukerjea, will act as interim president in the ITPA's formative period until the General Council and the General Body of the ITPA formally meet.
"The founding member players of the ITPA believe that Mr Mukerjea will bring a balanced and objective view to the running of the organisation given his past accomplishments as a Davis Cup player and captain as well as a respected statesman," the statement read. The 11 revolting players, led by Devvarman, had put forward a charter of demands before AITA ahead of the Chennai Open. AITA yielded to most of the demands but the players refused to compete in the Korea tie since they did not get a few assurances in writing. The AITA recently gave all the assurances in writing which ended the rebellion.

Zeballos surprises Nadal to win Chilean Open
Argentine Horacio Zeballos sprung a major surprise by beating Rafa Nadal 6-7, 7-6, 64 to win the Chilean Open on Sunday and clinch the first title of his career. World number 73 Zeballos held his nerve in the final set, breaking Nadal when he was serving to stay in the match to seal victory after almost three hours in the Pacific coast city of Vina del March "I'm shocked. I've beaten one of the best players of tennis history. It's an incredible sensation," an emotional Zeballos said. "I still think I'm dreaming. It's an honour playing against him. I enjoyed being with him at the locker room, eating with him. He's a great guy, I would like to ask him if he's from this planet," the Argentine added with a big smile. Nadal was playing his first tournament since suffering a shock defeat to the un fancied Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon last June, having been sidelined by a troublesome knee injury and his comeback delayed by illness.
Praveen handed a suspension
Indian pacer Praveen Kumar has been suspended from participating in the upcoming inter-state Vijay Hazare Trophy matches after being issued a show cause notice by the BCCI following his unruly behaviour in a Corporate Trophy game recently. "Praveen Kumar has been issued a Show cause notice by the Board. He has been suspended from participating in the forthcoming interstate Vijay Hazare Trophy matches," the BCCI said in a release. Praveen, who was named in Uttar Pradesh's 15-member squad for the Vijay Hazare trophy, has now been left out of the squad. The bowler was issued a letter by the BCCI on Saturday, asking him to explain his stand on the incident at the Board's Corporate Trophy held in Raipur last week, where he was playing for ONGC.

Struggling India opener Gautam Gambhir has been dropped from the squad for the first two Tests against Australia and been replaced by Delhi teammate Shikhar Dhawan, while veteran offspinner Harbhajan Singh is back in the fray. Gambhir's opening partner Virender Sehwag, who too is coping with indifferent form, has been retained. Keeping the debacle against England and the struggles of R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha in mind, the national selection committee chaired by Sandeep Patil felt Harbhajan is still India's trump card at home. The bowler, who is one short of playing 100 Test matches, is likely to be included in the playing XI too. This will be the bowler's second comeback in less than a year. The selectors picked a 15-member squad for the first two Tests against Australia beginning later this month. Apart from Dhawan replacing Gambhir, Tamil Nadu batsman Murali Vijay has been picked as the reserve opener. Among other decisions taken, young medium-pacers Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been included while Saurashtra all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja retains his place. Suresh Raina, who scored a century in the Irani Cup game for Rest of India and has been in good
form in the ODIs, has been left out. Patience ran out with Gambhir: Gambhir hasn't managed a Test hundred in almost three years now and the selectors, it is learnt, had been toying with the idea of breaking up the usual opening combine for some time now. Gambhir and his Delhi batting partner Virender Sehwag haven't managed a century stand for the first wicket for 28 innings, apart from a 137-run stand against South Africa in Centurion almost twoand-half years ago. Sehwag's reputation alone seems to have preceded his form and fitness. The aggressive opening batsman hasn't had much to show either, except for a century against England in Ahmedabad. He also missed out on the Irani tie. However, the selectors seemed in no mood to tinker with both the open-
ing slots, considering it a risk against Australia. Before coming into the England series, Sehwag and Gambhir opened the batting in South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand, where their average partnership was around 27.45. Post the South Africa series, the slump got worse and the batsman managed a mere 140 runs together in 10 Test innings. Dhawan, who was impressive in the Duleep Trophy, with two hundreds in two matches at an average of 77.25, has been suitably rewarded. However, the selectors' decision to continue with Murali Vijay, despite the righthander managing a mere 148 in eight Ranji innings and no particular contribution in the Duleep Trophy either, seems surprising. Vijay's two big knocks this season are the unbeaten 266 in the Irani Cup tie five months ago and the
116 in the Irani tie that ended on Sunday. Vijay's inclusion comes at the cost of in-form Mumbai opener Wasim Jaffer, who last played a Test for India five years ago. Jaffer, who has been in supreme touch this season with 915 Ranji runs in seven matches, was busy scoring yet another century on Sunday afternoon in Irani at the Wankhede Stadium where, ironically, the selectors were busy picking the squad. Meanwhile, the bowling attack, that was left in shambles with the unavailability of the injured Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav, has been replenished with two youngsters, Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who will join the ranks with Ishant Sharma. Dinda enjoyed an impressive Ranji outing this year while Bhuvneshwar has been rewarded for his one-day performances against Pakistan and England. The rest of the squad contains players retained from the Test series against England. Squad: MS Dhoni (captain & wicket-keeper), Virender Sehwag, M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashok Dinda.
Women's World Cup: India beat Pak to finish 7th Skipper Mithali Raj finally came good with an unbeaten century as Indian women beat arch-rivals Pakistan by six wickets in a seventh place play-off encounter in the ICC Women's World Cup in Cuttack. Already out of contention after being hammered by Sri Lanka, the 'Women in Blue' came up with a much improved performance as they first restricted Pakistan to 192 for seven in 50 overs and then reached the target in 46 overs at the Barabati
Stadium. Skipper Mithali, who had been in woefully out of form, helped herself back into form with an unbeaten 103 off 141 balls with the help of 13 boundaries and a six. The only regret she would have is that her best came when it
mattered the least. Mithali added 87 runs for the unbroken fifthwicket stand with Reema Malhotra, who remained undefeated on 25. The Indian women were in a spot of bother at 108 for four but the Indian captain
found an able ally in Malhotra as they comfortably won their last game of the tournament with consumate ease. Mithali also enjoyed couple of useful stands of 43 and 49 with opener Thirush Kamini (26) and Harmanpreet Kaur (16). Earlier, the decision to bat first after winning the toss didn't quite work for Pakistan, who were saved to a large extent due to the contrasting half-centuries from Nain Abidi (58) and Nida Dar (68 not out).
