Siddhartha Mukherjee an Indian-American has won the prestigious 2011 Pulitzer prize for his book “The Emperor of All Maladies: A History of Cancer.” He is an oncologist by profession and this is his first book. The book is a huge success and he advocates a strong antismoking campaign and also regular breast cancer screening to battle the growing incidence of the disease in India. Siddhartha is a Rhodes scoholar and is an award winning science writer. He is also a cancer physician at the Columbia University Medical Centre where he also teaches medicine. His book has been ranked as one of the top 10 in the non-fiction category by the New York Times review. Continued on page 26
Gandhian leader Anna Hazare who has called off his fasting after the government has agreed to set a committee to draft the Lok Pal bill has shot off a letter to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi alleging smear campaign against the committee members by Congress leaders. Hazare was also stung by the criticism of his statements and by the surfacing of a CD containing a purported conversation allegedly featuring Shanti Bhushan, his colleague on the joint drafting committee for the Lok Pal Bill. Hazare took no names, but appeared clearly to be accusing senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and HRD and Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal of “creating confusion” and “derailing” the discussions in the committee. “One of the General Secretaries of Congress Party has been making many statements... I assume that he has the support of the party... Most of these statements are factually wrong, which
