Kemi Badenoch elected Conservative leader in historic first

The Conservative Party has elected Kemi B adenoch as i ts f irst Blac k leader since the party's founding in 1834 Announced as the new Opposi tion Leader on Saturday, Badenoch has made histor y not only as the f irst Black leader of the Conservative Party but also as the f i rs t Black woman to lead any maj or political party i n the UK

At 44, Badenoch, a mother of three, secured

53,806 votes from party members, while her opponent, Robert Jenrick, received 41,388 votes after the parliamentar y party eliminated four other candidates The announcement coincided with a new poll showing the Conser vatives leading Labour for the f irst time since December 2021

The Shadow Secretar y of State for Housing, Communities, and Local Government opened her acceptance speech by expressing gratitude to her predecessor, Rishi Sunak, the party’s f irst British Indian leader I want to thank Rishi; no one could have worked harder during such challenging times Rishi, thank you for all that you did We wish you and your wonderful family the ver y best for the future," Badenoch said Rishi Sunak responded on social media, extending his support: "Congratulations to Kemi Badenoch on being elected Conser vative Party leader I am conf ident she will be an outstanding leader of our great party She will reinvigorate the party, uphold Conser vative values, and challenge Labour Let's come together behind her

Born Olukemi (later shortened to Kemi) Olufunto Adegoke, on Januar y 2, 1980, in Wimbledon, London, she was the daughter of Nigerian Yoruba parents Her mother travelled from Nigeria to the UK to give birth at St Teresa’s Private Hospital just before the British Nationality Act of 1981, which removed automatic birthright citizenship for those born in the UK Shortly after her

birth, Badenoch returned with her family to Nigeria, where she spent much of her childhood Her father, Femi Adegoke, was a general practitioner, and her mother, Feyi Adegoke, a professor of physiology She is one of three siblings, with a brother and a sister Badenoch’s early years were spent between Lagos, Nigeria, and the United States, where her mother lectured At age 16, she returned to the UK to live with a family friend due to Nigeria’s worsening political and economic climate, which had affected her family Though born in the UK, Badenoch described herself in her maiden parliamentar y speech as “to all intents and purposes a f irstgeneration immigrant ” Before becoming leader, Badenoch ser ved in the Cabinet under Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak from 2022 to 2024 She has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for North West Essex since 2024, and previously represented Saffron Walden from 2017 to 2024

Badenoch’s election signals a continued shift to the right for the UK's oldest political party, indicating that it may adopt a more hardline stance on issues such as immigration, climate policy, and cultural matters in opposition

Can Kemi Badenoch steer the Tories back to glory?

Kemi

Badenoch has now stepped into the leader’s shoes for the Conservative Party, with high expectations of her to steer the fractured Tories back on track, as they work to rebuild, following the General Election outcome

Badenoch assumes this role with a hopeful outlook as just hours before she was named leader of His Majesty’s official Opposition, a new opinion poll showed the Conservatives inching ahead of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's faltering Labour government As the new leader embarks on her mission to “ renew, ” she has so far held back from outlining specific policies in both her campaign and victory speech, opting instead to focus on returning the Conservatives to their “first principles ”

As she embarks on the daunting task of rebuilding the diminished Conservative Party, Badenoch’s immediate priority will be to restore unity within a party known for its internal divisions She must also find a strategy to either counter or

Additionally, she must keep in mind that Boris Johnson, ousted as prime minister in 2022, may still harbour ambitions for a political comeback

Ultimately, the significant challenges facing the 44-year-old leader converge on one ultimate goal, that is regaining the voter support lost in the recent general election and although the next general election isn’t expected until 2029, leading the Opposition can be a demanding and unrewarding role Political analysts have repeatedly noted that public dissatisfaction for the Tory party ran so high that the election was more about removing the Conservatives than about choosing a government This deep-seated discontent poses a difficult path forward for Badenoch, as she strives to lead her party from a right-

wing stance

Moreover, it’s hard to ignore that Badenoch is the same figure who once stated that not all cultures are equally valid when discussing immigration She has drawn criticism for remarks suggesting that autistic individuals receive undeserved privileges and protections, as well as for calling maternity pay excessive With her election as the Opposition leader, she is facing renewed backlash from families bereaved by the Covid pandemic, who feel insulted by her assertion that the Partygate scandal was “overblown ”

On a positive note, this election marks a few historic firsts where the Tories have outpaced Labour The Conservatives have now elected both the first Asian leader and prime minister, Rishi Sunak, as well as the first Black female leader of any major British political parties with Kemi Badenoch While Labour has 66 ethnic minority MPs in Parliament, that diversity is not reflected at the top levels of Keir Starmer’s cabinet This representation is significantly lower than that seen in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s cabinet, where senior posts, including the prime minister, chancellor, home secretary, and foreign secretary were, for the first time, all held by individuals from minority backgrounds

Currently, the Conservatives find themselves in a complex position, and Kemi Badenoch’s appointment is, in many respects, a controversial choice Yet perhaps this bold approach is precisely what the party now requires Badenoch has the potential to bring a decisive contrast to Rishi Sunak’s cautious balancing act between the party’s different factions Whether this is the right decision for the party or not will ultimately be revealed with time and we’ll just have to wait and see!

World v/s Trump: A fragile alliance?

Donald Trump’s re-election brings a complex, high-stakes challenge to the UK, reigniting questions about the stability of UKUS relations For Britain, Trump’s “America First” agenda often translates into unpredictability, complicating transatlantic relations As the British government navigates the uncertainty, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy have made a significant effort to forge ties with Trump and his administration Their September dinner with Trump, paired with Lammy’s extensive outreach to Trump allies, reflects a deliberate attempt to strengthen diplomatic channels and address shared concerns, notably around defence However, core differences between the UK and the Trump administration's priorities suggest a potentially bumpy ride ahead

In the UK, understanding the motivations behind Trump’s appeal among American voters has often been challenging While Brits are well-versed in American pop culture, the underpinnings of US politics centred around individual freedom, limited government, and gun rights frequently baffle the British public Many in the UK struggle to reconcile these values with Trump’s rise, viewing his actions and rhetoric through a more collectivist lens rooted in British political culture, which tends to prioritise social responsibility and consensus Issues like gun ownership, the death penalty, and a fervent commitment to personal freedoms play an integral role in American life, in ways that may appear exaggerated or alien from a British perspective

Interestingly, Trump has garnered a notable level of support among some British figures Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson offered his congratulations to Trump following his re-election, citing his confidence in Trump’s vision for a “strong America ” Several politicians, including Nigel Farage,

Trump’s approach as potentially beneficial, not only for America but also for global stability

Trump’s victory as the 47th US President marks a shift in foreign policy, with an emphasis on resolving global conflicts His administration is expected to focus on the wars in Ukraine and Israel, where his influence is seen as pivotal Trump’s second term may prioritise de-escalating tensions in these regions, in contrast to Joe Biden’s approach In the volatile Middle East, Israel faces conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as tensions with Iran Trump has supported Israel’s fight against Hamas but may give Netanyahu greater autonomy in dealing with Iran, without prioritising humanitarian concerns

Trump’s presidency could influence global security in crucial ways, particularly regarding NATO and defence spending His stance on trade and tariffs could complicate UK business interests Additionally, his rollback on Biden-era green policies poses challenges for the UK’s sustainability ambitions, as investments in renewable energy wavered after his win

As questions loom over the future of India-US ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated his friend Donald Trump on his election victory Modi expressed eagerness to

together for global peace and prosperity Trump’s return could benefit India, particularly through fresh tariffs on China,

The growing challenge of anti-Hindu sentiments

Hinduism remains the world’s oldest religion and third largest, with more than 1 billion followers More than just a faith, it serves as a way of life and a philosophy that promotes virtuous living, guiding the Indian diaspora and adherents worldwide Indians have made significant contributions across various fields from technology and science to medicine, arts, and business fueling economic growth and innovation both domestically and globally However, this rise has coincided with increased anti-Hindu sentiments

Globally, the rise in anti-Hindu activities targeting temples has become a growing concern, reflecting an unsettling wave of intolerance and hostility toward Hindu communities These incidents are part of a troubling trend that endangers both the sanctity of Hindu places of worship and the safety of those who follow Hindu Dharma While Hindus are a majority in India, they remain a minority in most other parts of the world, facing unique challenges and vulnerabilities as a result

In countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan, where Hindus comprise roughly 8% and 2% of the population respectively, they have endured ongoing struggles as religious minorities These communities have been particularly vulnerable to violence, especially during major religious celebrations, and have witnessed frequent desecration of temples For instance, during a period of political upheaval that saw former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign and flee to India, Hindus faced a surge in violence

In India, tensions have also escalated, exemplified by a clash in North Kolkata during the Kali Puja immersions, although police claimed it was unrelated to the festivities Additionally, since the new government in Jammu and Kashmir and the abro-

gation of Article 370, terrorist attacks have increased, with Pakistan-based groups shifting their focus from the heavily secured Kashmir Valley to the Jammu region Exploiting Jammu’s challenging terrain, these groups have launched 43 attacks in 2023 alone, often infiltrating through the International Border and Line of Control, sometimes using tunnels

The global landscape of anti-Hindu sentiments extends beyond South Asia, as seen in Canada, where violence erupted at the Hindu Sabha temple in Brampton when a group waving Khalistan flags clashed with Hindu devotees Canada has witnessed a rise in anti-India and Hinduphobic incidents in recent years, including targeted attacks on Hindu temples India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar condemned this violence,

between Canada and India, as well as between Sikh separatists and Indian diplomats Statistics Canada reports that from 2014 to

Pakistani, or South Asian descent, including two targeted attacks on Hindus Furthermore, data from the California Civil Rights Department indicates that anti-Hindu hate crimes are the second-most reported form of religious bias in California

Are We Now Socialist?

The rec ent c ha nges to pension tax ation under the UK budget proposed b y Chanc ellor Rac hel Reeves have sparked vigorous debate across the pol itica l spectrum On one ha nd, these ref or ms c an be seen as steps t oward weal th redistr ibution, aligning wit h principles of economic eq uality and s ocial welf are On the other, critics argue that the policies ma y disincentivize pe rsonal savings and undermine financial s ecurity

Redistribution

Addressing Wealth Inequality: One of the core tenets of socialism is reducing the gap between the wealthy and the less fortunate By including pension pots in inheritance tax (IHT) calculations, the new policy seeks to limit the transmission of substantial, untaxed wealth across generations This change ensures that those who inherit significant sums contribute a fair share back to society, aligning with the principles of progressive taxation

Example: Under the previous system, an individual with a £1 million pension could pass this wealth on tax-free, even when the recipient was already well-off The new policy changes this by subjecting pensions to IHT, thus redistributing wealth through government channels and potentially funding public services that benefit the wider community Fairer Tax System: The inclusion of pensions in IHT calculations helps address a loophole that allowed large sums to be inherited without contributing to tax revenue While other assets, such as property and savings, have long been subject to IHT, pensions were a notable exemption The reform aligns pensions with other forms of wealth, creating a more balanced tax framework where all high-value assets are treated similarly

Funding for Public Services: Increased tax revenue from high-value pension inheritances could bolster government finances This additional revenue can be directed towards public services, infrastructure projects, and social welfare p r o g r a m s t h a t s u p p o r t t h o s e w h o n e e d i t m o s t Redistribution of wealth in this way can help reduce societal disparities and fund the social safety net that underpins a fair society

Example: If pension-based IHT contributes an additional £5 billion to the treasury annually, those funds could enhance the NHS, improve public education, or support social care, directly impacting the quality of life for millions of citizens

However, past policies on H-1B visas might impact Indian IT companies Despite challenges, former Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu is optimistic about the long-term growth of USIndia relations, citing strong foundations in defence, technology, healthcare, and energy collaboration INDIA OFFICE Bur ea u Chief : Nilesh

As India emerges as a potential global power, it faces challenges, including efforts to defame the country under the guise of terrorism, which may deter international investment These issues are often tied to geopolitical tensions and economic rivalries Regardless of the motivations behind such propaganda, it is crucial for India to maintain a diplomatic approach and avoid antagonism, as is happening now, focusing on fostering constructive relationships and promoting its positive contributions on the world stage

The Negatives: Dis inc entives to Save a nd Financ ial Security Reduced Incentive to Save: One of the key drawbacks of this policy is the potential disincentive for individuals to save diligently for retirement Pensions have been viewed as a reliable way to secure financial independence later in life while allowing wealth transfer to loved ones Including them in IHT may discourage high-income earners from saving beyond a certain point, fearing that much of their efforts will ultimately be taxed away

Example: A professional aiming to build a pension pot of £1 million may reconsider their savings target, opting instead to spend more during their lifetime or invest in assets that offer better tax efficiency This shift in behaviour could lead to lower overall pension savings rates and increased reliance on state support during retirement

Erosion of Retirement Planning Security: People often save in pensions for a sense of security and the promise of leaving a legacy for their families

Are We Now Socialist?

Continuation from page 3

The introduction of IHT on pensions challenges this notion and may lead individuals to reassess their retirement strategies Those who wish to avoid hefty taxes may be driven towards riskier investments or alternative savings vehicles, potentially compromising their long-term financial stability

Complexity and Plan nin g Challenges: The new rules add a layer of complexity to financial planning, particularly for those with larger estates Individuals may need to employ costly estate planning services to navigate these changes effectively This could create disparities where only those who can afford professional advice manage to optimize their estate, while others face higher tax burdens without recourse

Exa mple: High-net-worth individuals may pivot towards trusts, offshore investments, or other sophisticated tools that provide tax benefits but are inaccessible or too complex for the average pension saver This could lead to unequal treatment between those with expert financial guidance and those without

Individual Incentives

While the budget changes may advance social equity by taxing substantial inheritances more effectively, they do so at the potential cost of disincentivizing individuals to save for the future The policy embodies a classic socialist principle: greater taxation on accumulated wealth to foster a more equitable society However, critics argue that undermining the incentive to save could have long-term repercussions on economic behaviour and individual financial well-being

Diwali and Halloween come together

In the true spirit of Canada’s multiculturalism, we decorated our front porch with banners for both Diwali and Halloween, which brought joy to many passersby, especially the school children on their way to and from the nearby school

The happiness on their faces is indescribable it’s something that can only be felt In the evening, children dressed in Halloween costumes came to our doorstep, and as I handed out candies, I saw little angels in them, thanking us with pure and innocent smiles Diwali, primarily a Hindu festival, is also celebrated in various forms by other faiths Jains observe Diwali to mark the liberation of Mahavira, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas to honour Guru Hargobind’s release from a Mughal prison

Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil, encouraging us to remove the darkness of animosity and grudges, to seek forgiveness, and to forgive others for any wrongs, intentional or not Halloween, observed on October 31, has both pagan and religious roots but is celebrated today with secular traditions, especially in Europe and North America People enjoy parties, costumes, jack-o’-lanterns, pumpkin carving, and candy The holiday also begins the Christian observance of Allhallowtide, a three-day period dedicated to remembering the dead, which starts with Halloween on October 31 and is followed by All Saints' Day and All Souls’ Day

Coincidentally, October 31 is also the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, an extraordinary leader, freedom fighter, and architect of India’s integration, also known as the Iron Man of India In a fitting tribute, this day has been designated Rashtriya Ekta Divas, or National Unity Day Time magazine featured Sardar Patel on its cover on January 27, 1947, and dedicated four pages in its foreign affairs section to him, referring to him as “The Boss” in American political terms a nod to his selfless dedication to India’s independence from British rule

We wish everyone a Happy New Year, Vikram Samvat 2081 May God bless you all, and may you stay safe and healthy

National Fertility Awareness week: Addressing infertility challenges for minority communities

With deep insight into cultural stigmas and the barriers Asian communities face in accessing IVF, she advocates for better fertility education, improved NHS funding, and the eradication of taboos around infertility Professor Nargund emphasises the importance of equal access to fertility care, underlining the pressing disparities affecting minority communities' health and well-being

What are some of the unique cultural challenges and stigmas Asian couples face when it comes to discussing or seeking help for infertility, and how can these taboos be addressed within the community?

I have spoken to many Asian patients who unfortunately still face significant cultural taboos surrounding infertility in their communities Unable to have open conversations with loved ones about their experiences, these stigmas can increase the mental challenges for those facing what is already a difficult personal journey Given that stress can have a significant impact on pregnancy and fertility treatment success rates, addressing these taboos through community education is crucial

One prevalent misconception within Asian communities is the belief that infertility is solely a woman s issue While this assumption is false – in reality, male factors contribute to nearly half of all infertility cases – it can nonetheless have a significant impact on a couple’s journey towards parenthood By raising awareness and understanding of fertility issues through community networks and patient support groups, we can help improve education, access, and

outcomes of fertility treatments I have previously been involved in running educational sessions amongst community groups and know firsthand the positive impact it can have

Another unique challenge faced by Asian couples is that there is currently a shortage of Asian egg donors A 2021 HFEA report highlighted that 52% of Asian couples seeking IVF had to rely on White donor eggs, as only 4% of egg donors are of Asian descent With many patients feeling it is important for the donor's ethnicity to match their own, this challenge can result in treatment delays and consequently poorer outcomes Further, awareness-raising within all Asian communities could significantly help address this challenge ”

With disparities in NHS funding and a “postcode lottery” for fertility treatment across England, how do these issues particularly impact the access and outcomes for minority ethnic communities, including Asian patients?

“While an unacceptable postcode lottery for NHS-funded fertility treatments across England persists for all, ethnic minority communities, which depend more heavily on NHS-funded services, are particularly impacted The current disparities in care severely limit ethnic minority patients’ access to fertility treatments and their consequent outcomes Single women and same-sex couples face a unique set of challenges when trying to access fertility treatment due to cultural taboos as well as inequalities in egg and sperm donor provision

Despite NICE recommendations for three full NHS-funded IVF cycles, only 7% of Integrated Care Boards adhere to this guideline I have long campaigned to end the IVF postcode

lottery to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, have equitable access to funded IVF treatment, thereby improving health equity and outcomes The NICE guidelines should also specifically address access to treatment and timely diagnosis of gynaecological conditions impacting fertility that are more prevalent for individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds

We must continue to advocate for crossdepartmental collaboration between the Department of Health and Social Care, the Department for Work and Pensions, the Women and Equalities Committee and the Treasury to address this issue and its disproportionate impact on minority ethnic communities ”

The latest HFEA data indicates that Asian patients experience lower IVF success rates compared to other groups. What are the primary factors driving these outcome disparities, and what steps can be taken to bridge this gap?

The disparities that lead to lower birth rates in IVF treatment amongst Asian patients are extensive and multifaceted Alongside the above economic and cultural factors, preexisting health conditions provide another primary factor that contributes to inequalities in IVF access and outcomes

For example, Asian women tend to be more prone to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a condition that can lead to extended delays in treatment due to NHS waiting lists and prolonged IVF referrals Given the impact of age on both men's and women's fertility, timely diagnosis and accessible treatment of underlying health conditions can have a huge impact on fertility treatment outcomes for Asian patients

To improve fertility treatment outcomes for Asian couples, we must eliminate the NHS postcode lottery, educate communities about fertility misconceptions, and raise awareness regarding pre-existing conditions that can hinder timely treatment

K ey C hanges : Pensions and I nheritance Tax (I HT ) Previously, pensions were a shielded asset when calculating IHT, allowing individuals to pass their pension wealth to b e n e f i c i a r i e s f r e e o f i n h e r i t a n c e t a x T h e n e w b u d g e t changes, however, will see pensions included as part of the estate for IHT purposes Estates over the current threshold of £325,000 will face a 40% tax rate on the excess value W orked Examp le 1: Th e Mo derate Pension P ot

Scenario: An individual has a pension pot valued at £400,000 and other assets (e g , a home and savings) worth £200,000 Their total estate value is £600,000 C urrent System:

• Pension excluded from IHT calculation

• Estate value for IHT = £200,000

• Result: No IHT due, as the estate is under the £325,000 threshold N ew System:

• Pension included in IHT calculation

• Estate value for IHT = £600,000

• Amount over the threshold = £600,000 - £325,000 = £275,000

• IHT liability = £275,000 × 40% = £110,000

O utco me: Under the new rules, the estate incurs an IHT liability of £110,000, significantly impacting what the beneficiaries receive

W orked Examp le 2: Do uble Taxatio n Risks

Scenario: An individual aged 78 with a £600,000 pension passes away Their total estate, including other assets worth £200,000, sums to £800,000 The beneficiaries withdraw the inherited pension funds, which are subject to income tax at 40% (assuming a higher-rate taxpayer)

N ew System Im plications:

• Estate value for IHT = £800,000

• Amount over the threshold = £800,000 - £325,000 = £475,000

• IHT liability = £475,000 × 40% = £190,000

• Remaining pension after IHT = £600,000 - £190,000 = £410,000

I ncome Tax on Withdrawals :

• Beneficiaries withdraw £410,000, taxed at 40%

• Income tax = £410,000 × 40% = £164,000

T otal Tax P aid:

• IHT + income tax = £190,000 + £164,000 = £354,000

O utco me: The total effective tax on the pension pot is 59%, drastically reducing the amount the beneficiaries ultimately receive

To illustrate a scenario where the effective tax on a pension could reach 67%, we need to account for both the inheritance tax (IHT) on the estate, including pensions, and the income tax paid by beneficiaries when withdrawing from the inherited pension Here’s a detailed worked example:

Scenario: Large Pension Pot and Estate with HighIncome Beneficiaries

I nitial Details:

• Pension pot value: £800,000

• Other assets: £400,000 (e g , property, savings)

• Total estate value: £1,200,000

• Beneficiary's income tax rate: 45% (additional rate taxpayer)

• Calculation of Inheritance Tax (IHT)

• Estate Value for IHT Calculation:

• Total estate value = £1,200,000

• IHT threshold (nil-rate band) = £325,000

• Amount subject to IHT = £1,200,000 - £325,000 = £875,000

• IHT at 40% on £875,000 = £875,000 × 40% = £350,000

• Remaining Pension After IHT:

• Pension pot after IHT = £800,000 - £350,000 (IHT proportion on the total estate) = £450,000

• Calculation of Income Tax on Pension Withdrawal Beneficiary’s I nc ome Tax:

• Beneficiaries withdraw the remaining £450,000

• Income tax at 45% (additional rate) = £450,000 × 45% = £202,500

• Total Effective Tax Calculation T otal Tax P aid:

• IHT = £350,000

• Income tax = £202,500

• Total tax = £350,000 + £202,500 = £552,500 E ffective T ax Rate:

• Effective tax rate on the original pension value = Total tax / Original pension pot

• Effective tax rate = £552,500 / £800,000 ≈ 69%

It’s been a while since I did Tax Law So do check your circumstances with your accountant The bottom line for me is my pension and yours has to perform better more than ever Those appalling fund managers producing poor performance can no longer be tolerated Take action now Do something about it and sack your IFA and take control

The temple was commissioned by Arte Charpentier, a renowned architectural firm, and aims to bring the ancient art and science of Hindu architecture to France It promises to add to Paris’s rich tapestry of monuments and artistic expression, serving as an ambassador of Indian culture and Hindu wisdom

The foundation stone-laying ceremony was held in September 2022 in the presence of Anand Swarupdas Swami Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS, extended his blessings and recalled the long-standing vision of a Hindu temple in France - a dream sparked over 50 years ago during a visit by Yogiji Maharaj and Pramukh Swami Maharaj to Le Bourget Airport in 1970

The temple is set to be completed by 2026, and in July of the previous year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Paris and received an update on its progress Volunteers from BAPS presented a 3D model and shared detailed construction plans, offering a glimpse into the future of this architectural marvel

Once complete, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir will serve as a symbol of intercultural respect, community service, and global harmony, enriching both France’s cultural landscape and the spiritual lives of the Indian diaspora in Europe

The Electio n C ommission resched uled the by-polls to 14 assembly constituencies (AC s) across Uttar P radesh, Pu njab and Kerala to Nov ember 20 from Nov em ber 13 in view of local festiv als

The date of counting and completion of polls across nine ACs in UP, 4 ACs in Punjab and 1 AC in Kerala shall remain as announced earlier, that is, Nov 23 and Nov 25 respectively

The rescheduling of by-polls in the three states follows requests from national and state parties such as Congress, BJP, BSP, RLD and some social organisations While the Congress had cited the ‘Kalpathi Rastholsavam’ festival, to be celebrated from Nov 13 to 15 in Palakkad, Kerala, to demand a deferment of the poll date, the BJP, BSP & RLD in UP had approached EC with a similar rescheduling request, submitting that people usually travel 3-4 days ahead to celebrate Kartik Purnima, which falls on Nov 15 this year

Congress too apprised EC that the 555th Prakash Parv of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji is to be celebrated on Nov 15, with an Akhand Path being organised from Nov 13 onwards
