PBP-Between the Health (Medical Treatment) and Wellness Tourism (Rejuvenation) Health Tourism has started well in last few years in Gujarat but not the Wellness Tourism the type of we know happens in Kerala or Goa.With corporate hospitals gearing up with special wards and other facilities to attract Value Added Tourism (Medical Tourism) and connectivity to Ahmedabad improving all the time the trends are positive than ever before and this is the time to capitalise and move forward aggressively. Future of Medical Tourism?

PBP- We must appreciate that the basics of successful medical tourism lies in the fact that we have in India the best of experts in medical field, latest and modern medical equipments and cutting edge technology as is available in many western nations. However the big difference is the cost factor. The future of Medical Tourism will depend on how long we remain cost effective and how long nations from where patients come to India grow in terms of modernising their own health care infrastructure. When I tour Africa I am reminded of India in ’80 as far as the health infrastructure in these countries is concerned.

But these nations are catching up fast and if they do catch up then numbers in Medical Tourism in future will gradually come down. Middle Eastern countries like UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain are already as good as any other country in the world in terms of equipments, facilities etc and the number of patients from these countries for medical tourism have already dwindled say from the numbers in ‘90’s.The future of Medical Tourism in India should not be taken for granted and advantages of cost factors, cutting edge technology

PBP - We have tie ups with many Health Care felicitators, major insurance companies, agencies etc in many countries especially in Africa who refer us patients. We have our own marketing staff based in Africa to promote our own medical tourism.

Average, time, cost, and post visit follow up etc?

PBP – The cost, duration of stay either as an outpatient or as an inpatient depends upon the clinical

condition of the patients. A cancer case may have to stay for 1-2 months at the cost of approx $45000/- and a patient with heart bypass surgery will have a total 7-8 days approx package at $ 9000/-.The affordable cost factor is a huge advantage for any international patient coming to India for Medical Tourism or Value Added Tourism as we call it. The follow up is usually done back at home. We are introducing telemedicine connectivity to some countries to have pre or post visit consultations. These things will improve further thanks to 3G soon been available in India that will help connectivity of all types. We also send our consultants to these countries on regular basis to see both new and follow up patients.

Do patient/family undertake recreational/tourism activities.

PBP- Not every patient come to India to see Taj Mahal but yes the relatives accompanying the patient do enjoy life beyond the boundaries of the hospital. They certainly go back with additional bags of shopping they do in Ahmedabad!

irst world treatment’ at ‘third world prices’ is how industry sources define medical tourism in India. Although India is a recent entrant into medical tourism, it is fast catching up. According to a study by Mckinsey & Confideration of Indian Industry (CII), medical tourism in India could become a US$2 billion industry by 2012 from US$ 350 million in 2006. Further it is expected for an annual growth rate of 30% making it a Rs. 9500 crore industry by 2015 (The Economic Times,2009).

Destination India is famous as world class healthcare at economical price. Lasik to correct refractive errors What is Lasik?

Lasik stands for laser in-situ keratomilieusis. In this procedure an Excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea and correct a wide range of refractive errors.

How Excimer laser works?

The use of the excimer laser in corneal refractive surgery has greatly increased the safety of the procedure.

The refractive correction is achieved by the reshaping of as little as 5 to 20% of the total corneal thickness. 11 uterine tumours removed from Russian woman

I

t took 20 long years for Galena Romanchenko to finally get rid of her multiple fibroids and save her uterus so that she can embrace motherhood. At the age of 22, Romanchenko was diagnosed with tumours inside her womb in Ukraine and the doctors there had advised her to have the uterus removed. Not ready to give up the prospect of becoming a mother ever, Romanchenko continued to visit doctors, including practitioners of traditional medicine all over Russia and other countries.

However, all of them said that there were too many complications and asked to get the uterus removed.

When she got married a few years back, Romanchenko ended up in Ahmedabad. Here a citybased gynecologist helped her get rid of all the tumours and salvaged her womb. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In total, 11 tumours were removed from her uterus. A few of them were the size of oranges while the biggest was 25x20 cm.
