MEDICAL TOURISM - 2010

Sarve Santu Niramaya.... What was Khazanah, Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund up to when it launched a bid for control of Singapore’s Parkway Holdings healthcare group earlier this year? Seemingly aimed at striking a business deal was in fact a cross border battle for control of a hospital chain by companies from the Asian Countries. This is certainly not an exceptional case of bidding for take over of private hospital network. The trend is evident in major countries of Asia as demand for private medical services is increasing at a rapid pace. For example, India’s healthcare market alone was estimated to be worth 38bn dollars in 2009 and is expected to increase by 62.9bn dollars during the next four years, according to projections by a leading pharmaceutical company, Fortis Healthcare. The aging population of the developed world-especially patients without health insurance or facing long queues at overburdened national healthcare services in UK or the USA is pushing the demand for healthcare services in India. Lack of health infrastructure or ultra modern facilities in Middle East and African countries is also fuelling the demand. Heart bypasses, hip replacements and dental work are some of the stock-in trade of many of India’s medical destinations. Milk town Anand in Gujarat, for example, has emerged as world’s new destination for couples from Western countries seeking fertility treatment and the services of surrogate mothers. No wonder, Asian’s countries like Singapore, India, and Taiwan are in a race for expanding their healthcare market. They are therefore looking to the US, UK and other developed countries for growth. In order to tap the market they are evolving the strategies based on better heath care facilities at cheaper rates. A country as large as India has a cutting edge over other Asian countries in terms of logistics, technologies and expertise. Its growth story also helps it to stand tall. Eyeing on the immense opportunities in the healthcare sector, different states of India are vying with one another to attract patients from abroad. Gujarat for instance, has chalked out

Health and Wellness Tourism as part of boosting tourism in the state. A study conducted by the YES BANK over the potential of the State in this sector states that Gujarat being the home of a significant number of NonResident Gujaratis, gets substantial number of foreign tourists. It has world class hospitals at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and smaller towns like Nadiad, Anand, Jamnagar or Mehsana. Gujarat is one of the few states in India to announce a separate policy for health tourism, with the objective of creating integrated circuits based on the location of specialty hospitals, heritage and culture. The fact that we are bringing out a special issue, fourth year in a row, proves that readers and advertisers have benefited equally and we are glad that we have been a bridge to service providers and service seekers residing abroad, especially UK. Readers are advised to consult their physicians/experts before seeking the health care services abroad. I congratulate the entire team of Horizon Advertising and Marketing (Jumbo Advertisers) and AB Publication [India] Pvt Ltd, Ahmedabd (BPO) for their fruitful efforts. C. B. MEDICAL TOURISM - 2010

Healthcare: Global solutions emerging fast While the Communicable diseases were the cause of death in 60% of patients in 1900s, in 2010 life style diseases are a cause of 60% deaths. These ailments can be prevented, treated. Patients of the life style diseases are normally fit enough to travel, unlike the patients in the earlier cases. For the present day patients, it is safe enough for them to be allowed to travel to other places as the treatment for obesity, cardiac ailments, renal transplants, joint replacements can wait till suitable and effective remedies are found in other parts of world with cost savings even after adjusting the travel costs. Also globally there is a change from Illness Care to Wellness Care! Medical Tourism: Travelling for health to distant parts of the world is not a new thing, it has been happening from time immemorial. Marketing of Medical Tourism is relatively a new initiative attracting the users in countries with recession, providers with Economical, Expert, Effective solutions in time, and the Governments and the travel agencies world over. ICT, Globalisation: When the outcome is good and income is better, who would not prefer to avail such facilities! Trusted treatments with reliable outcomes at several centers have paved the way for widespread mass movement of patients to different parts of world for better, economical, faster or experienced or alternative medical care .The Internet is the next leveller after God! India is Priceless yet Priced Less: India is now being recognised as a quality destination for value medical travel and patients from over 55 countries are treated at Indian hospitals. The country today offers the latest techniques such as robotic surgery, gamma-knife treatment for brain tumours and other cutting edge medical procedures. “The efficacy of treatment compares with that in the West, with death rate from coronary bypasses at 0.8% compared with 2.35% in the USA”. India offers the same world class procedures and surgeries at about one-fifth to one-tenth of what is charged in western countries. In fact, medical procedures in India are even cheaper than in Thailand, the other main medical tourism destination in the region. Bone marrow transplants cost $30,000 in India and $62,500 in Thailand. The System Stress and Securities Issues: Another reason why India is strategically placed to attract patients is that healthcare systems in Europe and the US are under severe pressure, with patients having to wait for over a year for surgery. More than 700,000 patients in Canada are waiting for surgeries for almost a year. Security hassles in the western countries post 9/11 is further bringing in a new set of patients from Gulf

countries to India. Insured and the Uninsured: According to estimates, there are 50 million people in the US without medical insurance for whom domestic treatment costs are prohibitive. Even the insured need Medicare and their treatment in India is now being facilitated by tieups between the insurance companies in the US and private Dr. Chaitanya Buch Indian hospital chains. Some insurance companies are considering coverage of expenses at global destinations if the expenses are more than US$10,000 in USA, with safety issues left to the patients who know and do the homework before embarking on any medical expedition. Do The New!! Old Wine in a New Bottle? Patients in a lot of cases are well travelled and seek something new and different – a kind of holiday experience. In fact, rejuvenation, including yoga, and alternative therapies now form an integral part of health tourism in India. The fascination for fitness, alternative health maintenance among the people in the west is fuelling the momentum. Americans spend around $25 billion on non-traditional medical therapies and products. Ayurveda, Homeopathy and Siddha — they have about 7 lakh practitioners. In fact, realising their importance, the government of India has launched a Rs 1.25 billion project for the scientific validation of these therapies. This impetus will help BREW the old wine in NEW Bottle! Foreigners will help the local therapy rejuvenation! The SIZE Statistics The healthcare industry in India, at about Rs. 860 billion in 2001 is expected to grow in size to Rs 2000 billion by 2012 , while the total health tourism market is expected to go up to Rs 100 billion by 2012, registering a sharp growth of 20-25% per year. Government Initiatives Already, the government has developed a strategy to position India as a global hub for quality-conscious medical tourism. In fact, the health ministry has already formulated stringent quality parameters for hospitals’

accreditation and is introducing international standards to the healthcare supply chain. The external affairs ministry recently introduced a special ‘M’ category visa for those seeking medical treatment in India, while the civil aviation ministry is opening special counters at airports to facilitate a hassle-free entry. The tourism ministry, on its part, is pushing medical travel as part of its ‘Incredible India’ campaign and intends to showcase India as the emerging healthcare destination in the global arena. Not surprisingly then, the healthcare industry is already seeing the beginning of a new era. The Road Ahead: The journey to those thousands of dollars and more importantly Early, Economical, Cures demands attention to some of the problems, enlisted here. Lack of information: The knowledge about medical tourism is being mostly shared by word-of- mouth or by persons who are internet savvy. Lack of trust: Foreigners are still sceptical of the quality of medical care abroad, and doubly sceptical of ventures that have no personal or local contacts. Lack of medical liability: Patients from developed countries know about legal recourse to medical malpractices in healthcare in their countries. This is often not applicable to procedures that take place overseas, and are not under their legal jurisdiction. Surrogacy – A boon for childless couples

10

Surrogacy- another term for borrowed womb is gaining in popularity in India and also in foreign countries, as the demand for treatment for infertility issues such as surrogate mothers, egg donors, IVF procedures etc is on the rise. Studies show that one out of every six couple have trouble conceiving and/or carrying a child to term. Bloom IVF Centre, a leading IVF centre specialising in Surrogacy & other IVF (in vitro Fertilization) solutions such as IUI, IMSI, ICSI, Semen & Egg banking has been achieving remarkable success in the field of Surrogacy as well as other IVF related techniques. Bloom IVF delivered their first surrogate in 2004, and since then the successful journey went on to set high standards with the latest techniques setting benchmarks in this field. What is surrogacy? Surrogacy is a method of reproduction whereby a woman agrees to become pregnant and deliver a child for a contracted party. The surrogate mother is the woman who carries the pregnancy and gives birth to a baby for another woman. Many couples opt for surrogacy when the wife cannot carry the entire term of pregnancy for various medical reasons. Surrogacy by assisted conception should normally be considered only for patients for whom it would be physically or medically impossible or undesirable to conceive and/or carry a baby to the full term. With advancements in medical technology, it is possible for a couple to use a donated sperm, egg or uterus when indicated. The average pregnancy success rate at Bloom IVF is 45-50 percent per attempt in women of less than 35 years of age. A couple should opt for surrogacy if there are certain medical indications found. They include: • Women whose ovaries are producing eggs with absent uterus. This could be because they have had a hysterectomy (removal of uterus) performed due to cancer, severe haemorrhage or ruptured womb, or they were born without a uterus. • A woman, whose uterus is malformed or fallopian tubes are damaged due to ruptured ectopic pregnancy and is incapable of carrying a pregnancy to term. • Women who suffer from medical problems such as diabetes, heart and kidney diseases. For them, pregnancy would be unadvisable as it could be life threatening. • Women who have a history of miscarriages. Certain physical conditions in which surrogacy can be suggested are: • Conditions which require the woman to take drugs which are dangerous to the developing foetus. • Premature ovarian failure or severe ovulatory disorders such as refractory polycystic ovaries, fertility drug insensitivity etc. • Severe cardiac or renal disease, brittle diabetes, active lupus, oestrogen dependent cancers • Surgeries for fibroids which have affected the uterus or IUD • Severe pelvic adhesions which distort the uterus and /or bowels Surrogacy Procedure: Typically, a couple undergoes in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure to produce an embryo that is biologically theirs. Gujarat Samachar & Asian Voice

Dr Nandita Palshetkar and Dr Hrishikesh Pai

The eggs are harvested from the woman (who wishes to have a baby), fertilized in the laboratory with the husband’s sperm and at a specific time during the cycle the resulting embryo is then transferred into the gestational carrier (surrogate mother), who carries the baby to term. The surrogate is supplemented with hormones to prime and time the uterus for conception. When the child is born, the carrier will turn the baby over to the couple and sign away her parental rights. The surrogates should ideally be below the age of 45 and should have given birth to children previously. All the surrogates are tested for HIV, HCV, VDRL, and HBSAg and shown to be seronegative for the virus just before the embryo transfer. The genetic parents should imperatively go for in-depth counselling. At Bloom IVF Center, in-depth pre-treatment counselling is done for all couples free of charge. Surrogacy procedure has a success rate of about 50 percent. India now has about 350 facilities that offer surrogacy. Last year, about 1,000 pregnancy attempts using surrogates were made at these clinics. This year, the figure is likely to go up to 1,500. Despite the social stigma and taboos, surrogate mothering is increasingly becoming a part of society. It just needs proper guidance, counselling and more acceptance from society. Why BLOOM IVF CENTRE: Pioneers in IVF & other related ART technologies such as IUI, ICSI, IMSI, Surrogacy, Egg & Embryo donation, Semen & Egg banking; Practicing Assisted Reproductive Technology for 20 years; Treated 15,000 plus patients from India & abroad; Success Rate: The present success rate of Bloom IVF Fertility Center has reached up to 45 - 50% per attempt in women less than 35 years of age. Knee joint problem!! Knee is one of the most important joints of the body, which takes the entire weight of the human body. In the above 50 age group, more than 80% of people are suffering from knee joint problem. Knee is hinge type joint which works on one axis. Age related wear and tear takes maximum toll on the Knee joint. This wear and tear is due to five basic reasons that are common in the modern day life of a majority of people, such as: Standing kitchen (especially in case of women); lack of exercise; Obesity; lack of calcium; childhood injuries and accidents. To prevent knee joint pain, one must control weight, do some daily exercises and take enough calcium. Once arthritis sets in, the patient should ideally observe the following precautions: Reduce weight; avoid sitting on floor; avoid standing for a long hours; avoid stairs; do regular knee exercise and regularly go for walking with sports shoes on. Arthritis ultimately cripples people with agonizing pain. Until a few years ago, patients afflicted with severe arthritis had to invariably endure pain and suffering for a lifetime. Restricted activities used to force patients avoid going out, making them remain confined to home. Joint replacement surgery is one of the most remarkable scientific achievements. This surgery has changed lives of many and is now one of the most successful of all surgeries with predictable results. Replacement Surgery - when, why & where? When: Pain, deformity and instability are three main symptoms of severe joint damage. Activities of daily life get significantly affected, mobility is severely reduced. This surgery is indicated only when patient demands and all other modalities of conservative treatment have been tried out. Why - This surgery gives long term, satisfactory and predictable results. After surgery, usually there is no pain, deformity is corrected and mobility is improved to a great extent. Where – A knee replacement surgery should be done by a team of experienced doctors at a center where infrastructure facilities like laminar airflow theater, ICU and physiotherapy back up are available. Preoperative care advisable for patients who have decided to undergo the surgery includes proper preoperative assessment; counseling; get prepared for hospitalisation for 5 days; physiotherapy - start walking on 2nd day with walker; use of walker for 2 weeks and stick for 2 more weeks. Key benefits of a knee replacement surgery include

Dr. Dimple Parekh Parekhs Hospital, Ahmedabad

enjoying pain free life and walking, moving about without the need of any support. Other major advantages are: Patients can walk a good distance even up to 2 km without any discomfort; they can sit, stand and climb stairs; can drive car, sit in a bus or train; can play golf. They are usually back to routine activities of daily life in 4 weeks. Among the post surgery don’ts, included are no active contact sports; no sitting cross legged or squatting and no mountain climbing as well as other adventurous activities. Results With newer designs and better materials, the results of joint replacement surgery are highly satisfactory. A large number of publications from all over the world have shown 88% to 90% pain free life for up to 20 years after the surgery. Newer Concepts (1) Sitting of floor: Newer design of implants, surgical technology and technical know-how make it possible for patients to sit cross legged. (2) Computer assisted knee replacement surgery: it gives accuracy and helps prolong the life of the replaced joints. An error of more than 3 degrees in a joint replacement surgery will invite higher chance of early failure. The computer guides the surgeon in precisely planning the exact amount of bone to be removed during surgery. This, in conventional method is done by simple eye-balling. Nowadays, even the car tyres are aligned with the help of computer. Why not our joint?

MEDICAL TOURISM - 2010

Understanding Varicose Veins Varicose veins are visible, bulging unsightly veins in legs. They are not just a cosmetic problem. They can often cause pain, heaviness in legs, night cramps, itching or swelling. If ignored, varicose veins can compromise the nutrition of skin and lead to pigmentation, skin thickening or ulceration and bleeding. Patients with varicose veins are also at a higher risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Causes of varicose veins: Heredity; Hormonal – more common after pregnancy; Dysfunctional vein valves. Obesity and aging also play a role in developing this condition. Complications of varicose veins: Eczema; skin ulcers; bleeding and thrombosis. Treatment of varicose veins: In the recent years, lot many advances are made in the treatment of varicose veins. The type of treatment offered depends on many factors and no single method is the best! 1. Medicines & Stockings: Good symptomatic relief, but they cannot cure large varicose veins. 2. Surgery: Surgical ligation of the problem vein and removal of associated varicose veins is a gold standard treatment method in use for many years. The removal of these damaged veins does not harm the normal blood circulation of the leg. 3. Endovenous LASER treatment: A minimally invasive option in which the damaged veins are treated by needle puncture and passage of thin laser fiber which

e-Edition@www.abplgroup.com

heats and seals the vein from inside. The advantages are cosmetic result and rapid recovery with minimal side effects. 4. Doppler guided foam sclerotherapy: This involves injection of a special chemical in the veins to block them. This can be used for recurrent varicose veins also. This procedure can leave behind a mild Dr. Sumit Kapadia pigmentation mark. How complete is the complete Denture? Are Dental Implants the better alternative? The life expectancy in India has increased considerably over the last decade. We are finally realizing the importance of good health and improved social life. Dental health has now become an integral part of holistic being in the young as well as the old. Although complete conventional dentures are designed to satisfy the Dr. Arun Batra aesthetic as well as functional needs of patients, there are those who feel, that by wearing dentures their social life is being compromised upon. A recent dental survey revealed that nearly 80% edentulous (without teeth) are able to wear both the upper and the lower removable denture all the time. A smaller percentage of people wear only one (generally the upper one) whereas yet another group (~5-7%) are not able to wear their dentures at all and become “Dental Cripples” or “Oral Invalids.” These people tend to stay indoors avoiding social contact, which quite often could have a deleterious effect on their psyche. While wearing dentures, some people may experience problems. They may • Avoid certain foods • Have difficulty in speech • Claim that they chew better without dentures The ability to wear a denture successfully may therefore be largely a learned skilled performance. It is important to understand that aged patients, who are without teeth, lack motor skills, which are required to accommodate the new foreign body (dentures) in the mouth. The role of modern dentistry is then to restore the natural function of the teeth, giving an appealing look to the patient as well as overriding speech difficulties, regardless of the debilitated condition of the mouth. In the 1970s, Professor Per-Ingvar Branemark and colleagues at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, created medical history by putting forth clinical evidence of artificial tooth root analogs (Implants), made of titanium, bonding to the jawbone. The direct benefit of this research was that thousands of patients who could not wear conventional dentures, for one reason or the other, could now do so without any difficulty and with telling effect. What exactly is a Dental Implant? Simply put, dental implants are replacement tooth roots made out of titanium that are placed into the

jawbone. The process of receiving implants is generally comfortable and the implants literally become attached to the jawbone with a great deal of retention. In most cases, they are as comfortable and solid as your own teeth. Implants can be used to replace a single or multiple missing teeth. A patient who does not have even one tooth in his Dr. Shachee Batra mouth can have the following options: Fixed Teeth Option in Implant – where the implants are inserted in the jawbone. In this, one implant matches one tooth or the denture can be fixed with the help of screws to the implant.

Removable Teeth Option in Implant– where two or more implants are inserted in the bone and over these implants, either a bar is made, as shown in the figure, and the denture is ‘clipped’ to the bar or a ‘ball and socket’ joint could be made where the ball is at the top of the implant and the socket is at the fitting surface of the denture.

Time Frame for Dental Implants Depending upon the type of bone density (hard or soft), implants are first placed within the jawbone and left to heal and bond to the bone for 4-6 months. The teeth are then designed to fit the implant. The implant procedure needs a skilled and experienced dentist and because of the expense involved in the procedure, one should have a well planned out long term treatment option, which is functionally viable. Can any tooth-less person go in for dental implants? Yes! Anybody can be a candidate for implants with rarely, if any, after-problems. In fact, teeth implants is the most modern, scientific and the best way to bring that wonderful smile back. To-day, all the general dental practitioners, specialists and academicians in India and abroad are putting in great efforts to bring this modern dental procedure to the populace at large. This state-ofart technology is now easily available in Anand. ‘Sudant’ Dental Clinic Bardanwala Complex, Dr. Cook Road, Anand – 388001 Tel: (02692) 243933, Email: sudant@yahoo.com Gujarat Samachar & Asian Voice

Vadodara Evolving as India’s New Medical Hub

Gujarat’s cosmopolitan city, Vadodara, is popularly known as “Sanskari Nagri”. It is famous for its rich cultural heritage. The subsequent industrialization, proliferation of academic activities and the strategically important location of Vadodara, has welcomed a wide variety of people in various fields, from all over the world. Since the last decade, Vadodara has been growing and making its mark in the healthcare sector as well. It has evolved into a highly respectable destination, offering world class expertise in medical care. A classic example of this phenomenon is Welcare Hospital, Vadodara, which under the stewardship and guidance of Dr. Bharat. S. Mody has metamorphosed from a tiny single doctor practice, typical of the Indian scenario, into a strong institution, which now attracts patients from all across the world. The hospital is located at Race Course Circle, Vadodara. In the past 15 years, Dr. Mody and his team have set new benchmarks in healthcare delivery and treated satisfied patients who have become ambassadors of international recognition for Dr. Mody and his tremendous contribution in promoting Vadodara as a medical tourism destination. Recently, Mrs. Wendy Kherlopian, who is a citizen of South Africa, came to Vadodara for Knee Replacement Surgery at Welcare Hospital. Mrs. Wendy had been suffering from pain and disability in her knee due to Rheumatoid Arthritis, for last five years. She had already decided to get her surgery done in a hospital in South Africa. Meanwhile, through a friend, she came to know about Dr. Mody and his expertise in Joint Replacement Surgery. She communicated a few times with him and was very happy and satisfied with the interactions. She decided to get operated by Dr. Mody in Vadodara and flew down for the surgery accompanied by her husband. She is extremely happy and says she has no regrets whatsoever in deciding to choose Dr. Mody and Vadodara, for her surgery. Moreover, they are amazed that they have been able to get world class treatment at less than one-

third the cost that they would have incurred in South Africa. Mr. Dayo Akogun, from Nigeria, came to Dr. Mody after he had an accident, where he fractured his knee and his hip. After doing a thorough research online, he decided that Dr. Mody was the best person to conduct this surgery. The surgery was successfully carried out and Mr. Dayo is extremely pleased with the post operative care given to him. Dr. Mody has announced the construction of a modern 100 bed state-of-the-art hospital forbone and joint related problems. This new Welcare Hospital will be a multispeciality platform with a special focus on bone and joint related problems. Today, Welcare Hospital has a team of 11 consultant surgeons including specialists in Joint Replacement Surgery, Spine Surgery, Fracture Surgery, Geriatrics (old age problems) and Sports medicine and related treatment. The purpose of developing specialized departments is to ensure that each team will focus on the highest quality treatment in their respective areas, therefore, the patient will get the best treatment that medical science has to offer. The leadership for this whole effort is provided by Dr. Mody, he has many laurels to his credit. He has developed a specialized surgical technique through which patients can sit cross-legged and muslim patients can ensure “namaaz” position after surgery. He was invited as a member of the scientific committee of the 1st EFORT (European Federation of National Association of Orthopedics and Traumatology) – Asia Symposium, held in Bejeing, China in July 2009 and also for their 2nd Symposium to be held in Taiwan in November 2010. He is on of the three members representing the country on the International executive Committee of the Asia Pacific Arthroplasty Society to represent India. Dr. Mody was invited to write a guest editorial on “The definition of a successful total knee replacement differs for Asian and European patients” in Orthopedics Today Europe, July 2010. He is also on the International Board of Reviewers for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS), U.K, which is a prestigious international publication, referred by Orthopedic Surgeons all over the world. e-Edition@www.abplgroup.com

What’s In, What’s Out in Eye Surgery?

26

Cataract Surgery - From Key Hole to Pin Hole! The evolution of cataract surgery has been revolutionary. There has been a constant infusion of technology and procedural changes in eye surgery. The surgery has evolved from 12mm incisions in ICCE, to 8mm in ECCE to 3 mm in Phaco Emulsification surgery. Today, at Diva Eye Institute, the incision has been further reduced from keyhole (3mm) to pin hole (1.6mm) by the new Stellaris Vision Enhancement System. After removal of the cataract, an Akreos AO Micro-incision lens (MIL) is inserted. These lenses are zero aberration, aspheric lenses which provide enhanced contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. The advantages of Stellaris Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (S-MICS) are: 1. Smallest incision. (Incision size reduced by 50%) 2. Minimal trauma – greatly beneficial for diabetic patients 3. Cataract can be removed in any season 4. Excellent quality and clarity of vision with earliest rehabilitation Beyond Multifocals – What Next?! Multifocal Intra Ocular Lenses (IOLs), when inserted after cataract surgery, correct for both Distant and Near vision. However, Intermediate vision is compromised and there is less contrast sensitivity. Diva Eye Institute now offers CRYSTALENS – an Accomodating IOL, the only USA approved FDA approved lens, which corrects for Distance, Intermediate and Near vision without compromising light loss and contrast sensitivity. It offers improved quality of vision. CRYSTALENS mimics the natural lens in the eye. Hence patients can read the newspaper, see intermediate objects such as computers and dashboards, and also watch a cricket match live or on TV – all without using glasses. Latest LASIK surgery for removal of numbers: In LASIK surgery, first complex, computerized measurements such as corneal topography (mapping curvature of cornea), aberrometry and pachymetry (measuring thickness of cornea) are made. Then a flap is made on the cornea at 130 microns. This flap is lifted and, with the help of the Excimer Laser, a new shape is given to the cornea which corrects the numbers. At the Diva Eye Institute, the Schwind ESIRIS Excimer Laser System from Gujarat Samachar & Asian Voice

Dr. Dipan Desai

Germany is a technological breakthrough. It provides the smoothest profile while reshaping the cornea and is also the safest. When the corneal flap is made with a conventional micro-keratome, the cornea is applanated and made flat before cutting. This leads to a flap of uneven thickness, with thinner centre and thicker periphery. In order to overcome this problem, and get an even thickness flap, the Femto-second laser was designed in 2001, followed in 2003 by the Pendular Micro-Keratome. At Diva Eye Institute, the latest Carriazo Pendular Micro-keratome is used to create an even thickness flap. This brings down the complications to almost nil. This is the only centre in Ahmedabad to offer this technology, and also to offer Customised Corneal Wavefront LASIK Surgery. Diva Eye Institute is a centre of excellence, committed to providing complete eye care of international standards, in the most efficient manner, at reasonable cost. All aspects of eye care are managed under one roof. Three generations of ophthalmologists have rendered 80 years of eye care in Gujarat. It is a pleasure and honour to hear from our satisfied customers from all over the world. At Diva, every patient is important. Through our Manav Dhrushti Trust, our less fortunate patients are managed with no compromise in providing the best treatment and facilities. Anti-ageing……Adding science to the field of beauty Everyone knows the importance of good looking skin; it makes you feel and look younger. Nothing is permanent in this world, so is your skin; which means the older you are the more important it gets to start a quality skin care to pamper your skin. There are some simple steps like keep your body hydrated, gently cleanse your skin daily, exfoliate your skin, moisturize your skin daily, eat well, have sound sleep etc. which helps keep your skin younger. Once your skin is sorted, you could start correcting the flaws. The most common things which people complain of are: 1. Unwanted hair: Laser hair removal is the best option available, large areas like chest, back, underarms etc are treated easily. Laser hair removal achieves the best results with light-skinned, dark-haired individuals. 2. Botox: It is used to temporary remove wrinkles like forehead lines, crows feet etc. Other conditions like excessive sweating, blepharospasm are also treated well with botox. The effects last for about eight to ten months. 3. Derma fillers: It is used to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips and replace soft-tissue volume loss. The results can last

from eight months to five years. 4. Mesotherapy: It is a non-invasive procedure used to treat cellulite, skin glow, hair loss etc. 5. Intense pulsed light (IPL): IPL technology improves the appearance of photo aged skin, removes age spots etc. The procedure is ideal for patients with active life styles. 6. Chemical peeling: Chemical peelings are used to treat sun damaged skin, acne & acne scars, wrinkles etc. various types of peels are used according to skin type and conditions. 7. Fractional co2 laser: It is a new approach to treat damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles. 8. Laser skin tightening: It is an advanced wrinkles removal treatment that uses Infra red light to tighten the skin without surgery. 9. Others procedure done are dimple creation, liposuction (tummy tuck), breast reduction and upliftment, fat transfer, rhinoplasty, laser bleach, blepharoplasty, hair grafting, removal of mole and warts. Dr Jagdish Sakhiya, (M.D Skin) International Fellow, American Academy of Dermatology (A.A.D) and American Society For Laser Medicine & Surgery (A.S.L.M.S)

Constipation in children Constipation in children is very much a neglected topic in pediatrics. Almost 5-10% of children are suffering from constipation at some point of time in their life. Constipation means passing hard and/or infrequent stools. Children suffering from constipations are seen crying very much while passing stool. Even their mothers sometimes cry looking at the problems of their kids. Very few doctors are expert in treating constipation in children. Very few investigations and very few modalities of treatments are available. The most common cause of constipation in children is habitual, but it needs to be differentiated from other organics causes of constipation like • mental retardation • spinal anomalies • surgical conditions like hirschsprung’s disease • hormonal, like Hypothyroidism • anal stenosis Management of constipation is based on proper history taking, thorough clinical examination especially when child is constipated, observing posture & way of straining while passing stool, relevant investigation. Treatment is based according to cause. To treat the most common cause i.e. habitual constipation, toilet training is required. Toilet training also requires expert supervision, guidance, proper environment. Dr. Rohit Thakkar e-Edition@www.abplgroup.com

Is it worth going to India for dental implant? Lets go through some facts before answering the question..... * Dental implant manufacturers have an international base and provide the same systems to all the countries i.e. UK, USA, India, Canada, Korea ......so world is a single country for them.....but each country is having its own tax system and its own cost valuations ....so they provide implant in different prices to different countries. * In India, you will find the same certified, FDA approved system - As an example we are using osstem system (world leading brand in implant) also available in the UK, USA, Canada, Russia, Europe and almost in all over the world (visit us at www.jamnagardentist.com for more details) *Major difference is the cost, i.e. if you are going for a dental implant in the UK, it can cost you around 2000 to 3000 GBP. Whereas the same implant system will cost you around 350-400 GBP in India - 10 times cheaper than UK! And with the same quality! *You can enjoy personal touch as you are taking treatment in India from an Indian doctor. *Most of the Indian expatriates go to India atleast once a year, so that you don’t have to go especially for a dental treatment. It can be arranged with your regular visit there‌ *Sterilisation and disinfection, treatment processes here in India are also of the same international standard. (visit www.qualitydentaltreatment.com to get a list of

dentist from different cities who are following quality dental treatment) *So a perfect holiday, going home to meet your near and dear ones, getting quality dental treatment at affordable rate. Forget Dentures, Dental Implants are the latest, best Dental Implants: these words are now getting more & more common with many people. Formally people were not very much familiar with the words; but now the era has changed. Today, virtually nobody is interested in removable dentures. Most want fixed teeth, without disturbing the adjoining teeth. This is possible with the dental implants, without touching the adjoining teeth. Implants are available from different companies. Normally TITANUM IMPLANTS with TI-UNITE surface i.e., from NOBEL BIOCARE Co. are considered biologically the most accepted by the body and are FDA approved. For implants, a specific size whole is drilled into the bone and the implant, which is just like a threaded screw is placed into the bone. After a gap of 3 to 4 months, teeth are fixed on the implant. Many people, Indians settled abroad as well as foreigners come to India for dental implants. The prime reasons are that they get the same treatment as in UK or USA. Yet it is very cost effective. One of the best places for the Indians settled abroad to have their dental problems addressed in India and Gujarat is Dr. Bhalla’s Multi-Speciality Dental Clinic and Implant Centre in Ahmedabad. Himself a very experienced Dental Surgeon, Dr. Bhalla also has a team of three other special Dentists to serve the patients. Dr. M S Bhalla

Weight problems hamper normal, happy life – permanent solutions are advisable

Being obese is not all about how much you weigh, it's about having too much fat in your body. Carrying too much body fat has harmful effects on your health. Obesity is not just a cosmetic problem. It's a health hazard. Various obesity related health hazards include Type2 Diabetes; Hypertension; Heart diseases; Joint problems; Sleep apnea; Menstrual Problems; Gall Bladder Diseases; Increased Cholesterol Levels and Cancer. For people to be aware about obesity, if one has a BMI of 18 to 25, he or she is considered normal. They should continue caution in diet & exercise regularly. If the BMI is 25 to 30, the person is overweight, should be on diet & exercises. With a BMI of more than 27 with comorbidities or a simple BMI of 30 and above, person is considered obese and should consult doctors. Bariatric Surgeries are one of the last options for weight loss. They consist of a group of surgical operations designed to achieve both meaningful and sustainable weight loss. These procedures involve surgically manipulating the stomach (and sometimes the small intestine) to reduce food intake, and in some cases, to reduce the absorption of calories into the body. Bariatric Surgery is for individuals who have exhausted other weight loss options. It is important to keep in mind that weight loss surgery is not just a Gujarat Samachar & Asian Voice

Dental Implants – a revolution Dental Implants are manmade replacements for tooth roots that have been lost. They’ve cause a revolution in dentistry, because they mimic a real tooth-behaving exactly like real roots and even bonding naturally with the jawbone. A new ceramic tooth is placed on top of the implant. The benefits of dental implants include treatment of cases untreatable with conventional dental bridges & dentures; possibility of perfect restoration of chewing function; a feeling like real teeth, helping restore a patient’s self-esteem & confidence; gives better function than conventional dental bridges & dentures and last but not the least, it gives superior, aesthetic looks.

The durability of oral implants is based on many factors: High standards of treatment, meticulous daily cleaning by the patient, regular professional maintenance, abstinence from smoking and avoidance of overloading (like chewing bones, shells, hard nuts and candies), can contribute favourably or otherwise to the durability of implants. Normally, it can be considered a long lasting medical solution that does not need to be changed, sometimes for the lifetime Inserting implants is usually quick & easy. They’re strong, stable and secure, so you can comfortably eat all your favorite foods. Dr. Sonal Patel Snehi Dental, Anand

People lose one or more teeth for a wide variety of reasons. A tooth may be lost due to infection, gum disease, accident, decay or injury. When a tooth is removed, many problems occur. When a tooth is removed, the bone immediately begins to resorb and the surrounding teeth begin to shift, rotate and become crooked. Also when chewing molars are lost an improper bite will develop, making it very difficult to chew or grind food properly. Spaces and gaps between teeth may cause embarrassment, problems with speech and lack of self-esteem. Twenty years ago, these patients would have had no alternative but to employ a fixed bridge or removable denture to restore their ability to eat, speak clearly and smile. Fixed bridges and removable dentures, however, are not the perfect solution and often bring with them a number of other problems. The placement of an implant will improve all these difficulties and when it is properly placed in your jaw bone, can restore the missing teeth, thereby eliminating these potential problems. Sanjivani Dental Implant and Multi-speciality Dental treatment centre and Dr. Nigam Buch in Rajkot are continuously engaged in keeping people, patients aware about the advancement in the field of Dentistry and providing all the information that they want. For the benefit of out station patients as well as those who are settled abroad, free online consultation is also available through his website: www.dentalimplantrajkot.com. This facility aims to provide information of appropriate treatment to every patient, depending on his / her problem. Dental Implant treatment for Whom, How and What is it like? A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that a Periodontist places into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. While high-tech in nature, dental implants are actually more tooth-saving than traditional bridgework, since implants do not rely on neighboring teeth for support. Under proper conditions, implants can last a lifetime. Dental Implant treatment can be done as single stage, two or three stage procedure, depending upon the implantable bone site and healing process of implants. Long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants. Advantages of Dental Implants over Dentures or a Bridge: Every way you look at it, dental implants are a better Gujarat Samachar & Asian Voice

solution to the problem of missing teeth. Esthetic: Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth! Since dental implants integrate into the structure of your bone, they prevent the bone loss that often accompanies bridgework and dentures. No one will ever know that you have a replacement tooth. Tooth-saving: Dental implants don't sacrifice the quality of your adjacent teeth like a bridge does because neighbouring teeth are not altered or cut to support the implant. Confidence: Dental implants will allow you to once again speak and eat with comfort and confidence! They are secure and offer freedom from the irksome clicks and wobbles of dentures. Reliable: The success rate of dental implants is highly predictable. They are considered an excellent option for tooth replacement in the present world. Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants? If you have been considering about getting dental implants, you can test yourself to see if following conditions fit you: (a) Missing teeth – one, two or more. (b) Having problems while eaing or speaking. (c) Loose teeth owing to advanced gum disease. (d) Hiding your smile because of missing teeth or unsightly spaces between teeth. (e) Lack of confidence when speaking, eating or smiling. (f) Slipping or loose dentures.

Metabolomics: A Milestone in IVF for the 1st time in Asia Lilavati hospital IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) centre headed by Dr Hrishikesh Pai & Dr Nandita Palshetkar has added a new feather in its cap by installing a new technology called Metabolomics. Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr. Ashok Chavan recently launched this latest technology for Lilavati IVF Centre. “Lilavati Hospital IVF Centre (A part of Bloom IVF Centre) is one of the leading units in India treating infertility since the last twenty years. In ‘The Week’ Magazine Survey carried out in 2009, our centre had the privilege of being one of the top 3 units in India for IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization). “We have always been striving to launch the latest technologies in the field of reproductive medicine for the benefits of our patients. We are pioneers in introducing new techniques in India, amongst which some are: - Assisted Laser hatching and blastocyst culture (1998), Spindle view technology (2005), Oocyte bank (2006), Ovarian Tissue freezing (2007), INVO & IMSI (2008) and IVM (2010). Today Bloom IVF boasts of 5 centres in various cities of India (Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Navi Mumbai & Mohali)” says Dr. Nandita Palshetkar. In the field of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), one of the most significant goals of IVF practitioners is decreasing the number of multiple gestations while maintaining or improving the overall pregnancy rates. “We, at Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, are the First in Asia to have installed this technology “ViaMetrics” which assesses embryos with respect to their viability and implantation potential. The availability of metabolic profiling will empower doctors to shift from multiple embryo transfer to single embryo transfer” says Dr Hrishikesh Pai, thereby reducing the possibility of multiple births and related complications. “We have been in this field for two decades and will endeavor to increase success rates for patients who consult for the first time for IVF, as well as help those who may have experienced multiple failures with IVF” says Dr. Hrishikesh Pai. “These patients can be helped by a variety of techniques such as Assisted Laser Hatching, IMSI and Vitrification (new freezing technique). This Metabolomics will truly be a milestone towards achieving high success rate especially in case of recurrent IVF failures, he adds. “The IVF has established itself in India since 1985 when the first Indian test tube baby was born. The present success rate of Bloom IVF Centres has reached up to 45 to 50% per attempt in women less than 35 years of age and 40 to 45% per attempt for patients above 35 years of age,” says Dr. Nandita Palshetkar. “This centre also reaches out to men with poor sperm count, quality and motility using Intracytoplasmic

Sperm Injection (ICSI) and Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI)”. “IMSI helps magnify the image of the sperm 7,200 times, thereby allowing doctors to select the better, healthier sperm. The machine is having the magnification capacity of 16 times higher than ICSI and Metabolomics will also value add to this technique” says Dr. Rishma Pai. “We want to improve results in patients who have failed at IVF/ICSI before by using this machine to select the best embryo which will yield a high pregnancy rates,” Says Dr. Hrishikesh Pai. “The launch of ViaMetrics-E™ at Lilavati is a major milestone for our company” said Mr. Dilip Patil, CEO, Trivector Scientific International, a pioneering company in the field of IVF in India. “I am hopeful that we would make this novel technology affordable to all infertile couples in India.” About ViaMetrics-E™ ViaMetrics-E is a rapid, non-invasive procedure for in vitro fertilization (IVF) designed to aid in the assessment of viable embryos with the greatest reproductive potential. As embryos develop they undergo specific metabolic changes and produce biological signals or “biomarkers” that are absorbed into the culture media that nourishes these cells. Using a highly sensitive method of biomarker identification (metabolomics), ViaMetrics-E then measures these signals in the spent culture media, creating a ‘fingerprint’ or biomarker profile to help determine embryo viability. ViaMetrics-E provides objective assessment of viability without compromising the embryo, helping guide treatment options for patients undergoing IVF. About the experts: Dr. Nandita Palshetkar, Gynecologist and Infertility specialist is a 1st Vice President of Federation Obstetrics and Gynecological Society of India. (FOGSI), Managing Committee Member of Indian Society of Assisted Reproduction. (ISAR) and Indian Association of Genealogical Endoscopists (IAGE). She is also a Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology at D.Y. Patil Medical College, Navi Mumbai and Teacher for super specialty degree (FNB), Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine, National Board, Delhi.
