ujaratis in India and abroad are well-known for their traits of hard work, ambition, determination, education, business, family values, and attachment to their ancestral roots. The success of Indians and the Indian diaspora across the world has been truly remarkable. President APJ Abdul Kalam once said, “Gujaratis are the most frequent travellers amongst Indian communities in India and abroad. Data from the Indian High Commission in London and the British Home Office reveal that around 8000 or more persons travel between India and UK every week, and more than half travel during the months of October and February. Aside from the more favourable climate during these months, other popular reasons for visiting during this time are Diwali celebrations, weddings, social engagements, medical tourism and shopping. Around 40 per cent of the 1.8 million British Indians are of Gujarati origin. During their frequent trips to India they visit various parts, especially those where they originated in Gujarat. Whether it's to reconnect with old friends, pay homage to ancestral homes or to invest in property, India today is rich with services for heritage tourism, medical tourism, and of course, spiritual tourism, and NRIs now spend significant sums of money shopping, transportation, and investments. Gujarat has in particular capitalised on this, and now has something for all of its diaspora. This special issue is our modest effort to share awareness on the range of offerings that Gujarat now possesses that can only serve to strengthen your ties to the State and the Country. It is published now to enable would-be visitors to Gujarat to plan their itinerary more favourably. Welcome NRG is most likely to be used as special magazine for reference during the travel to Gujarat. Have a great journey, I hope Gujarat's warm hospitality enriches your soul the way it always does mine.

been ruled over by rulers of different lines. From massive forts to charming havelis, stunning stepwells and historical sites that have withstood the strong winds of change, this state is a paradise for history lovers. Those who wish to breathe in the history of Gujarat, can walk among ancient ruins and take a dip in its unique history. The top three destinations to visit for heritage, are Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Junagadh. The historical heritage not only attracts national tourists, but also those from abroad. Some of the mostfamous toursist places such as Lothalan ancient port city that existed near the river Sabarmati, Dholavira- an archaelogical site situated in Kutch that belongs to the almost 5000 years old Mohenjo-Daro Harappan Civilisation. Also worth visiting is the UNESCO-listed world heritage site, Champaner, one of the most gorgeous archaeological sites of Gujarat, replete with Hindu temples and step wells. Situated near Patan, Mehsana, the beautiful Rani Ki Vav was built on orders by Queen Udyamati in memory of her husband King Bhimdev. The beautiful vav/ step well has seven

borders carved with divine glory. Havelies are a part of Gujarat's history. Built to cater the business needs of a wealthy merchants, the numerous havelis across the state speak of the citizens of the bygone era. In a traditional haveli, the ground floor is a private area, the first floor has a different entrance and luxurious interiors- mainly meant for doing business and entertain guests. Havelis in Gujarat feature an abundance of wood. The use of wood in architecture, earlier, was a matter of prestige but the scale and extent of carving within the given hom were ultimately dependent on affordability. Wood is used in columns, brackets, frontage, and courtyard. The woodwork in such buildings is coated with black preservative oil that gives it a dark appearance. While the basic architecture of all havelis remain the same, some additions are done in some to make it stand out.

Some of the renowned havelis in Gujarat are the A pol in Ahmedabad Swaminarayan Haveli Temple in Ahmedabad, galleries laid out in east to west Tambekar Wada in Baroda, Bohra direction, and step corridors and wall Haveli in Siddhpur, and Darbar

Gopaldas Haveli in Kheda district. Vaso town in Kheda has a reputation around the world for its havelis. All these havelis are a must visit for their intricate architecture and decor. While the grand palaces and ruined forts of history's rulers are pretty easy to peg and visit, a brief peek into the narrow and secluded pols, across Ahmedabad, Nadiad, Patna, Vadodara, and Khambhat will reveal a lot about the citizens of those eras. Derived from the Sanskrit word 'Poli', pols are distinct residential areas that are unique only to Gujarat. Typically, a pol has one entrance and homogenous groups of people live in it. Rectangular or square in shape, these residences are aligned compactly in a row and have several floors. Such residences were initially preferred because of the feeling of protection and identity they gave. Gujarat has approximately 360 pols, each flaunting the finest of wooden windows, brackets, magical balconies, chabutras, khasdkis, and chowks. Used as a pond for water conservation, stepwells took the most elaborate and monumental form only in Gujarat. A traditional stepwell is fivesix storeys, with each level telling a story that leads to the well. Back in the days, the principal aim of these constructions were to supply water. Due to its significant role in the life of people, all these stepwells were crafted by highly talented artisans and craftsmen. Prominent stepwells in Gujarat include Ramkund Stepwell in Bhuj, Adi-KAdi Vav and Navghan Kuwo in Junagadh, Dada Harir Vav in

Ahmedabad, Helical Stepwell in Vadodara, Rani Ki Vav in Patan, Brahmaji's Vav in Khedbrahma, and Adalaj Stepwell in Gandhinagar. These wells hold religious significance too. Tourists keen on capturing the history of Gujarat, must visit these creations. Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Isaai... Gujarat has seen an influx of Hindu, Muslim Arabs, and Persian rulers. Gujarat is blessed with a marvelous spiritual architecture. Historians believe that some of the finest templesin the region were found during the Solanki Dynasty. Muslim and Persian rulers have contributed extensively to the construction of the state. They created gateways, monuments, and several multi-storey architectures. They improved the pallet of Gujarat architecture by introducing some concepts like half-doomed portal, domes, stalactites, squinches arches, pendentives, and honeycombing. The colonial period lead to a tremendous increase in the number of churches in Gujarat. After fleeing their prosecutors in Persia, Parsis too arrived in the state. Temple, Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka, Jama Masjid in Champaner, Jami Masjid in Ahmedabad, Mahabat Maqbara in Junagadh, Sidi Sayyed Mosque, Rani No Hajiro, and Badshah No Hakiro- all in Ahmedabad, Gurdwara Lakhpat Sahib in Lakhpat are some of the most stunning specimen depicting the spiritual architecture in Gujarat. Spiritual Tourism A famous Gujarati quote goes,“Farey Te Chare, Baandhyo Bhukhe Mare” (One who roams, eats, one who is tied down, starves). Gujarat's tourism industry seems to have originated from this idea, as there is not just one aspect or reason for a person to visit the region. Gujaratis have a deep sense of affection for the holy places of their culture, which is why, it has a defined season for visiting temples and mosques. Large number of people flock in each year to visit all the various places of worship Gujarat has to offer. “Tirth Yatra” as it is called, Gujarat has several divine institutions sprawled across, each with its own historical, geographical, religious, social, and cultural significance. Saurashtra region in the state

stands first in such tourism because of its multiple temples, ashrams, mathas, etc. All these places drip with folklore and anecdotes of legends and heavenly incarnations. The famous Ambaji Temple is situated on the top of the Gabbar mountain in Banaskantha. The only temple with over 358 'suvarna kalash', the temple sees thousands of devotees coming in every week, from all over the world. It is definitely the biggest hub of tenet, faith, and worship of goddess Amba. A temple of Lord Vishnu's incarnation, the Shri Swaminarayan built by the Swaminarayan sect, the Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar is one of the biggest swaminarayan temples across the world. The temple has the world class engraving of Indian cultural, historical incidents, gods and goddess' monuments, the biography of Lord Shri Swaminarayan amongst other things. It also features big circuit house cum guest house for those coming in for pilgrimage. This temple hit world news in 2002, when a terrorist attack inside the premises killed 33 people and injured 70. Somnath holds major importance when it comes to spiritual tourism. Located in Prabhas Patan, near Veraval in Saurashtra, it is among the first twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of

Shiva. A marbelous temple, it has been destructed many times by Islamic emperors in the past, only to be rebuilt by Hindu devotees. Shri Krishna has two magnificent temples, one in Dakor, near Baroda district, and another in Dwarika near the coastal line of north Gujarat. Both these temples are the main centres of faith and devotion of Krishna lovers. People especially visit these temples on full moon day every month. Arts and Crafts The art and crafts industry of Gujarat offers an array of jewelry, metalwork, embroidery, furniture, clay items, stone crafts, and other materials. Junagadh's brass industry is one of the largest in India. One of the major producers of brass and iron items in the country, Saurashtra and Kutch

regions are known for their supply of brass and iron. They is also popular for its range of brass and iron utensils, cutlery, knives, and scissors. The state is home to one of the oldest and most appreciated art and crafts of Gujarat. Artisans and rural locals are masters of the art of molding clay into well proportioned utensils. After baking them, they paint the products with vibrant colors only adding to the beauty of the pot. Another booking industry is the industry of embroidery and textiles. Mostly practiced by women in villages, there are a variety of embroidery to choose from like Rabari embroidery, Bavalia embroidery, and Banni embroidery. Gold embroidery is used specially to enhance fabrics used in weddings and major functions.

GUJARAT PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE IRON MAN OF INDIA Go big or go home, seems to be Prime Minister Narendra Modi's motto as the country inches closer to the Lok Sabha elections. With just a little over a month left for the inauguration of what is touted to be the world's tallest statue, the 182 metre high figure of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel- the Statue of Unity stands at 120 to 130 metres today. odi will unveil the statue on October 31, Sardar's birthday. Currently, work is going on at five major sites making up the Rs 2989 Crore project. The entire project includes the statue, a walkway, ticket counter, food court, a four-lane approach highway, a yard where all the parts are being assembled, and the Shrestha Bharat Bhavan- a 52room three-star lodging facility). A total of 4076 labourers are at work, out of which, a thousand are working on the state alone, which has been forged in China. Around 800 locals and 200 Chinese workers have been working in batches for the past two-three months since September 2017. While no visitors are allowed closer than 250 metres to the Sardar, the statue itself is visible from a seven km radius, dwarfing a landscape that once witnessed a long and hard battle for its current 163 metre height. Five years back, Modi, then chief minister of Gujarat, promised a statue on the occasion of 50 years of formation of the state, to come up on Sadhu Bet hillock in Kevadia Colony, home to the Sardar Sarovar Project on the Narmada river. He promised a “world-class statue befitting the statue of the Iron Man of India”. “Double the height of Statue of Liberty and four times that of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janerio”, he said. Fast forward to present, and the building is almost done. A Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) was set up back in 2010, and soon after Modi became PM, the Gujarat government handed the construction contract to a multi-firm consortium. L&T was picked as the executing firm, while the

consortium includes Michael Graves Architecture & Design and Turner Construction- it had previously developed the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Later on L&T's recommendation, Chinese foundry Jiangxi Tongqing Metal Handicrafts Co. Ltd (TQ Art Foundry) was chosen to mould the cladding essential for the making of the bronze statue. Spread across 50,000 sq feet with an employed 1000 skilled workmen, 62-metre has been installed in China at the Jiangxi unit. PROGRESS OVER THE YEARS As part of Modi's Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat slogan, Modi had called to build the statue from “iron farn tools” collected from across India, to represent the “unified India” Sardar stood for. Spearheaded by NGO Citizens for Accountable Governance, and mentored by election strategist Prashant Kishor, the movement to collect bricks for the Ram temple in Ayodhya. On December 15, 2013, Sardar's death anniversary, Modi flagged off 1000 trucks to travel to seven lakh villages, carrying three lakh empty kit boxes to collect soil and the scrap-iron farm implements. 135 metric tonnes of iron had been collected in variou forms by 2016, mostly scrap. Following deliberation on the unusable condition of the scrap, around

only 109 tonnes was used to make the foundation of the statue after undergoing processing. While not a lot of details are being divulged on the project, it is known that the statue will have about 1850 metric tonnes or 18.5 lakh kilogrammes of bronze cladding in all. The amount of steel and concrete used would be several times more. Cast by the TQ Art Foundry, the cladding is in the form of approximately 5000 bronze panels. Under the watch of the statue's awardwinning designer Ram V Sutar, the panels were transpoted over sea, and then road, before it were matched and assembled at an off-site workshop in Kevadia Colony.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani (Left) with Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel overviewing the progress of the Statue of Unity

CONSTRUCTION AND BUILD All required cladding is reportedly at the site now, and an 8-metre prototype of Patel's head lies at the workshop to guide workers in assembling the last set of bronze panels over the next few weeks. TQ Art Foundry has meanwhile revealed that the Chinese workers have been handed out specific instructions on the “aura” the facade should carry. The company was told that as per Sutar's original design, the statue has to have a poised countenance, with Patel's head held high and arms by his sides. They said the statue is expected to “emit a feeling of power as well as warmth, and appear as if it is walking on water, towards the Sardar Sarovar dam, with its left leg slightly forward.” The project's official website states that sophisticated state of art technologies like light detection and ranging technology and telescopic logging to assess rock joint are adopted. Status development through four stages of Mockup, state of the art three-dimensional scanning technique and computer numerical control production technique adopted to ensure accurate reproduction of minute details. The specifications, including showing Patel's legs clad in a dhoti and his sandal-wearing feet mean the statue is thinner at the base as compared to the top. Designers and engineers also have to account for the wind factor, considering the location and height, and weigh in on the possibility of earthquakes. According to official sources, the statue can sustain wind velocity of 220 kmph and earthquakes measuring up to 6.5 on the Richter Scale. The engineers first constructed the core

16 Welcome NRG

wall, the RCC spine of the statue. They affixed steel frames to it to hold together the bronze cladding, which forms the final facade of the statue. The cladding system is designed to have overlapping panels, allowing for vertical and horizontal movement, to resist earthquake and wind forces. The RCC core has a coupling wall to add rigidity and connect the cores. The concrete cores house the elevators and stairways which are to take visitors right up to the chest height of the statue. FIVE ZONES The Statue of Unity is divided into five zones. The figure upto its shin is the first zone, and comprises of three levels, including an exhibit floor, mezzanine and roof. It will also contain a Memorial Garden and a large museum. An official said that the museum will include the timeline of Patel's life, from his birth in Karamsad to his rise as one of the country's top leaders. Zone two extends to the statue's thighs at 149 metres, while Zone 3 goes up to the viewing gallery at 157 metres. Zone 4 will comprise of the maintenance area and Zone 5 will consist of the head and shoulders. The viewing gallery will be accessible through two elevators located in the statue's core, with a carrying capacity of 40 people each. An initial plan included visitors to be allowed up to the structure's head and to have a viewing gallery running through the eyes. This was however,

eventually dropped. The gallery will be able to accommodate up to 200 people at a time, and provide a view of the Satpura and Vindhyachal mountain ranges, which also form the point where Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra meet. Visitors will also get a distant view of the 212 km long Sardar Sarovar Reservoir and the 12 km long Garudeshwar Reservoir. A Museum and Audio Visual gallery will feature 15-minute presentations on Sardar's life and the tribal culture of Gujarat, in the lobby area at the entrance of the statue. Plans include running an amphibian bus that can run both on land and water from Kevadiya to the statue site, and a jetty service from the dam site to the statue. There are also bids for a ropeway cable car as another means to reach the statue. Also, a valley of flowers will be planted along the banks of the Narmada, by using artificial soil to cover over 200 hectares. CAMPAIGNS Loha Campaign As mentioned above, used iron farming implements from the villages were collected as a symbolic contribution of farmers of the nation. A unique initiative at the rural level, the Loha Campaign involved various social engagement organisations and volunteers worked to collect used iron farming implements from the villages from around the country. The first two phases of village-level programmes for the campaign was conducted during

HE facilitated the donation of used farm tools from farmers as a form of tribute to the tallest leader of modern India. Around 1,69,000 loha kits have been collected so far. Run For Unity The Run for Unity campaign was held to encourage India to run together in a tribute to Sardar Patel. In 2013, PM Modi marked the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, October 31, as 'Rashtriya Ekta Diwas' to commemmorate his legacy. On the very same day, the 'Run for Unity' was flagged off with the aim of getting every Indian run together in a tribute to Sardar Patel. The marathon, which was held on October 31, 2013, saw thousands of registrations at several places throughout India. The event proved to be an ideal way of spreading awareness of Sardar's contribution to Indian history. Fund for Unity The country's first crowdfunding platform was created by SVPRET, under the umbrella of the Statue of Unity project. An intellectual digital asset, it will be made available to all interested government entities for civic projects. The project seeks public and private philanthropic funds to enhance the social and physical infrastructure,

and consequently the HDI, in backward areas of the Narmada. Indians and the Indian diaspora worldwide can use this platform to contribute to the Statue of Unity projects, which itself will help accelerate socio-economic growth in the Narmada region. Meaning, scope of the fund raising and participation is not limited to project components of Statue of Unity, but it will also cater to various social infrastructure uplifting activities, tourism, skill development, entrepreneurship, health projects, etc. Digital Outreach The official website of the project cites its digital outreach as one of the campaigns for the Statue of Unity. The Gujarat government intends to use the figure as an unequaled identity in the digital world by leveraging various internet and communication technologies via the implementation of an overarching digital marketing strategy. Team of the project conducted a multi-channel integrated marketing outreach program for the project during Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat 2015 events, with a focus on increasing visibility of the Statue of Unity as a brand, creating greater engagement among appropriate target groups and audiences.

Key objectives to design this program were: • Utilize Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Vibrant Gujarat 2015 to create buzz around the Statue of Unity among the people visiting these events. • Position the Statue of Unity as an iconic national monument, especially to the NRI community • Drive brand awareness of the Statue of Unity through integrated on-ground and online activities • Provide a glimpse of event highlights to digital media audience • Highlights Of Digital Outreach program The digital outreach campaign received a total of 10,500,000 impressions online through a mix of on-ground activities, digital and social media channels.
