FOREWORD Welcome to the Autumn 2020 ABS Australia Beef Sire Update. Please use this update in conjunction with the ABS Australia 2019-20 Sire Directory. This Autumn Update introduces new sires to the ABS lineup. In Angus there are 2 new sires, the $160,000 Australian record price Angus bull 29AN2123 Millah Murrah PARATROOPER P15 and the top selling bull at the Coonamble Sale, 29AN2161 Coonamble INVESTMENT P20. There are three new Wagyu Japanese full blood sires. One of these is 29KB0009 Arubial BOND Q007, perhaps the best young carcass sire the breed has yet seen!

This Update includes a review of the Hereford True Genetics Super Sire Program feature sire, Wirruna Matty M288. Also, this Update introduces graduates of the highly acclaimed ABS HCR program. This program has identified sires that have consistently rated 8 to 15% higher conception rates in FTAI. Think of the decreased cost of pregnancies; and the bonus of more earlier calving cows and increased production in your operation.

ABS’ sexed semen product Sexcel® is further explained and we introduce new sires available. Consider the advantages to increase the number of heifer calves in your next calf crop and the ability to increase female numbers into the herd as Australia rebuilds the national herd. The new price list has some changes and some pleasant surprises. ABS Australia has a diverse range of sorted male and female semen and ABS Sexcel female semen available. It is best to call the beef team for updates on pricing, new inclusions and availability. The recently announced results of the NHIA annual survey again provided much pride with the ABS Australia Beef team retaining the number one ranked position. ABS also holds positions 1, 3 and 4 for the Angus sires with the most progeny registered in the previous two years. In fact, ABS holds 6 of the top 10 positions! During the COVID-19 pandemic ABS Australia is an essential business, so domestic semen sales and dispatches continue, as do international imports and exports. Unfortunately, the pandemic has meant a postponement of our biannual Beef Conference and Client Days which were scheduled for this winter in Northern NSW and Southern Queensland with guest speaker Matthew Cleveland, ABS Global Beef Team Manager. Also, ABS Australia staff have been directed to work from home and curtail farm visits so please contact us via phone, email, social media or Skype. We hope to hold our Spring Open Day to visit the bulls at TLG in October. Despite the current pandemic and many economic concerns, agriculture and the beef industry have a tremendous opportunity and upside. At ABS Australia, such is our belief in the industry, we have great pleasure in appointing Annie Pumpa to the ABS Australia team. ANNIE PUMPA joins the ABS AUSTRALIA Team Annie grew up in the Riverina on a family farm outside Culcairn NSW. Her family ran a mixed enterprise, breeding commercial Angus X Simmental along with an intensive feeding program and broad acre cropping. She has a vast range of knowledge on both a commercial and seedstock level, dealing with multiple breeds through her background. She has experience in various carcass competitions, youth programs and networking throughout the industry. Through Annie’s previous role at Landmark she has a wide knowledge of animal health in many industries including beef, dairy, pig and sheep. Annie has judged at many country shows throughout Victoria and South Australia, including Yea, Penola and Geelong Royal. She has a significant involvement and a strong interest in the showing side of the beef industry attending multiple Royal Shows throughout Australia during the year. Annie has led many Grand Champion, Supreme Champion and Interbreed Champion animals. Her most humbling achievement is leading KO Dream Q1, the calf on KO Dream N43 for the 2019 Supreme Interbreed Beef Exhibit at the Royal Melbourne Show. Annie is a huge advocate for youth in agriculture and is currently President of the National Hereford Youth Board. In March this year, Annie represented Australia at the World Hereford Young Breeders competition which was held in conjunction with the World Conference in New Zealand. Here her team was placed as the Reserve Champion Young Breeders Team. Annie has also travelled to Canada on scholarships to seek genetics of various breeds. Annie joins the ABS team on 1st May and we welcome her to the team. She wishes to progressively create and nurture relationships far into the future. Annie will provide support to the Beef Team initially but will be involved in all aspects of beef, dairy and Beef InFocus™ as well as all the proprietary products that ABS has on offer. Here’s how it works! 1. Implement a Fixed Time AI program as part of your standard beef breeding progam 2. Apply heat patches and monitor signs of oestrous over a 56-72 hour period 3. Animals who display strong signs of oestrous, or who display near or fully activated heat patches (roughly 60%) are AI’d with Sexcel sexed female semen 4. Remaining 40% of animals are AI’d with gold or platinum High Conception Rate (HCR) conventional semen in a blanket AI program with GnRH shot.
