Defining and Improving Maternal Value “To build a cow herd” – That’s the first reason given by many long-term ABS customers as to why they utilize AI in their operation. For many, access to proven, high genetic merit sires to improve their cowherd base is the driving factor behind their AI program. Even with improved genetic selection tools available today, building a cowherd may not be as easy and straightforward as it seems. For many cattlemen finding the right balance between performance and maternal traits is an ongoing process. We thought it would be good to take a closer look at what defines “Maternal Value” and to examine both the improved tools available and the challenges involved today in creating a productive and profitable cowherd. To provide perspective we enlisted the experience and input of several leading commercial and seedstock producers from around the country. While their objectives and environments vary, they share many of the same goals and face similar obstacles.

Q. How do you define maternal value and what traits do you think of as “maternal” traits? Chad Ellingson, Ellingson Angus, ND Maternal value is the ability of a cow to wean a calf more than ½ of her body weight every 365 days. She needs to have the structural functionality to do this over a long lifespan without needing extra care or labor. The EPDs we take into consideration the most are milk, heifer pregnancy, maternal calving ease and mature height. Not necessarily that these EPDs are the most extreme though the optimum for our customers’ management and feed resources. Paul Bennett, Knoll Crest Farms, VA Maternal value encompasses multiple traits that must be in sync with each other, as well as, the environment. Maternal traits include: 1) the ability of a heifer/cow to become pregnant early in the breeding season and maintain that pregnancy 2) calve unassisted and mother her calf without incident 3) wean a calf that is heavy enough, given the environment and feed resources 4) maintain appropriate body condition and size 5) remain fertile, productive, sound and healthy to at least 10 years of age 6) reproduce a genetic package that will earn added value in the marketplace 7) have a disposition that allows them to be “uneventful” in the herd. Tyrell Rousey, Berger’s Herdmasters, NE A female that is well adapted to the environment and conditions that she is expected to produce in and is able to thrive within those conditions for 10 years or more. Traits that first come to mind when I think of maternal are fertility, maternal instinct, fleshing ability, teat and udder quality, foot quality and structural soundness, and ability to wean a high % of her body weight without sacrificing the previous mentioned traits.

6

Chris Stansberry, OSU Range Research Station, OK Key maternal considerations for the commercial program here include mature size and weight, fertility, calving ease, soundness, longevity and milk - including teat and udder quality as well as resistance to mastitis.

Sitz Angus Ranch, MT Rich Ham, Commercial Producer, NE Udder quality, moderate milk, longevity and mothering instinct are top of the list maternal traits for us. Ben Adams, Salt Wells Cattle Company, UT To us “maternal value” is the ability of a cow to produce a profitable trouble free calf and to do it year in and year out on less than ideal conditions. If a cow can’t do that all the other traits mean nothing. Maternal traits important to us are fertility, mothering ability, udder quality, ability to thrive in poor conditions and good feet & legs. Nick Hammett, Circle A Angus Ranch, MO Maternal Value to us means the cow does her job in a sustainable and profitable manner. Females are expected to calve every year in the first 75 days of the calving season without individual assistance on calving, nursing, medical treatments, etc… They are expected to wean a calf that ratios at least 90%. There are many traits that go into these requirements from reproductive efficiency, maternal calving ease, milking and mothering ability; all are measured by the cow’s Sustainability EPD and Maternal Profit Index in our given environment. Doug Frank, ABS US Beef Product Manager Our customers help us define and quantify maternal value. Through their purchases, they tell us that they really value proven, time-tested bulls that combine balance and great maternal phenotype. Many of our most popular maternal sires are more moderate from a performance and mature size standpoint with documented feed efficiency genetics. It also seems that convenience traits like Docility and foot and udder quality have become a necessity today in maternal selection.

Q. Describe your environment and what type of cow you are trying to produce for your operation and customers. Chad Ellingson, Ellingson Angus, ND Our environment consists of temperature extremes from blustery winters to summers where it can be triple digit temperatures. When taking this into consideration we need to produce the type of cattle that are very adaptable to diverse conditions. Our cattle and customers’ cattle mainly graze on a combination of native and prairie grass. We strive to produce a cow that is average in

stature that maintains the body width and volume for her ability to consume enough forage to thrive and produce. She needs to have structurally sound feet and legs and we also demand that she have an excellent udder structure. Paul Bennett, Knoll Crest Farms, VA First and foremost, our environment mandates that our cows are capable of thriving on hot fescue. This includes heat tolerance, early shedding, sound feet, extremely fertile and having enough milk to wean a heavy calf under these conditions. Typically, a midsized cow with average-to-above-average fleshing ability works best. Chris Stansberry, OSU Range Research Station, OK Developing cows that are sustainable on primarily native and introduced warm season forages utilizing minimal additional nutritional inputs. Inputs should be limited to hay during inclement weather and protein supplementation to optimize utilization of standing forages. Rich Ham, Commercial Producer, NE Our cows are not small. They are medium sized, long bodied and feminine. Udder quality and structural soundness are a must. They have added volume, with good girth and muscling. We prefer curve bender type females that combine calving ease with big growth. We feed all of our steers to finish and have found that if the cow is made right she will produce a heavy steer that will consistently grade 95-100% choice with little to no direct selection for marbling. Ben Adams, Salt Wells Cattle Company, UT We run in a desert environment where the cattle winter out. We feed some molasses supplement most of the winter and partial feedings of hay as the feed quality deteriorates in late winter early spring. The ideal cow for us is a moderate to medium framed feminine fertile cow that has an excellent udder and a reasonable amount of milk production. They must calve easy and have the mothering ability to get the calf up and going in extreme range conditions. There are cattle that are too docile and don’t have the drive to get the calf up and going, on the other hand there are certain genetics we have used that have too much mothering instinct. She must then raise a respectable calf in our harsh environment while breeding back and maintaining body condition. There is nothing prettier than a fat cow but if she has a little calf standing next to her she has failed us. Longevity is extremely important to us, we have a lot of money invested in a heifer and she needs to stay in the herd for our operation to be profitable. Good structure with excellent feet and legs is crucial the cattle must be able to travel long distances to feed and water. We have had way to many cows and bulls fall out of production early because of their feet. Last her calf must go onto the feedlot and perform for the feeder as well as the packer. Nick Hammett, Circle A Angus Ranch, MO We run in a fescue-based grass environment in Missouri. Our cattle have to tolerate heat indexes over 100° and wind chills below 0°. Tolerance of endophyte infected fescue is one of our greatest challenges, so a good hair coat in winter and quick and complete shedding is important. I think producers have a tendency to breed for a phenotype that they believe works, we provide a given production environment and let the cows prove to us which ones work. In general, our cows range from around a 5.5 to 6.5 frame score and will weigh 1250-1400 lbs. in good condition. Joe Jones, ABS Area Sales Manager, ID The annual precipitation for most of my area ranges between seven to 13 inches. The cattle spend the majority of the months grazing dry feed. Scarce water holes are few and far between

“To us “maternal value” is the ability of a cow

to produce a profitable trouble free calf and to do it year in and year out on less than ideal Ben Adams conditions.” which limits the type of cow that can utilize our ranges. She must be moderate framed with enough body capacity and fleshing ability to maintain herself in our dry environment. Sound functional cattle are a must or our environment sorts them out fairly quickly. If we lack the due diligence in selecting for maternal traits such as frame size and fertility our environment will do the culling for us.

Q. Do you have specific EPD or Index criteria that you use when selecting maternally oriented bulls for your program? Chad Ellingson, Ellingson Angus, ND While we strive to produce cattle with tremendous weaning and yearling performance we also realize if we push the performance level to the extreme without keeping mature height in check we will get cattle that won’t be functional. The beauty is the industry has discovered lines of cattle that have the correct growth curve. These cattle have early rapid growth in life and their growth almost stops at 15 months of age. We have found the most productive females come from sires with these optimum growth curves. We pay particularly close attention to keeping a high ranking for maternal calving ease and heifer pregnancy while putting downward pressure on mature height with a milk EPD above breed average, though not extreme. Cattle that are extreme on mature height and milk many times become inefficient in our range conditions. Tyrell Rousey, Berger’s Herdmasters, NE All of our cattle go through the American Simmental Association database so All Purpose Index (API) has certainly been one Index. We use Simmental, Angus and Red Angus so MCE, Stayability, $EN, HP, and a moderate milk EPD are all things that are factored and weighed against other EPDs in our decision making. Rich Ham, Commercial Producer, NE Above average maternal calving ease with moderate milk are a must. Moderate mature weight relative to carcass weight is also a consideration. Ben Adams, Salt Wells Cattle Company, UT We try to stay middle of the pack with no big extremes. We like to stay 2.0 or less on birth weight and in the 18 to 25 range on milk. A positive $EN and average or better docility is important. For our environment keeping the YH in check is critical to avoid too large of cow. We typically try to avoid extreme growth or carcass EPD’s because those cattle will not have the longevity we want. Nick Hammett, Circle A Angus Ranch, MO We have our own genetic analysis system in place complete with Maternal Profitability indexes. This index incorporates birth, growth and feed efficiency EPDs; along with milk, heifer pregnancy and cow stayability EPDs. When selecting AI sires; calving ease, growth and milk have intermediate optimums when selecting for maternally oriented bulls. Heifer pregnancy, docility and scrotal circumference are also given some attention. Ben Lohmann, ABS Beef Sire Acquisition Manager ABS pursues different types of bulls suited for different types of programs but we evaluate all bulls for the necessities of feet,

How Does it Perform? We have tested and validated Sexcel™ extensively to be confident of its performance. We were able to do this through field trials involving over 12,000 units of Sexcel™, primarily in dairy herds. Our trials show that Sexcel™ achieves a higher relative conception rate when compared to conventional semen, than other sexed genetic products available on the market.*

* Relative conception rate (RCR) measures conception rate of sexed semen compared to conception rate of conventional semen from the same sires. Data is taken from inseminations in dairy heifers with pregnancy checks at 30-90 days. This data does not reflect a head to head trial. Data source: Sexcel data is from a 2016 ABS field trial. Stud A, B, C, D, E data is from customer commercial results 2014-2017 reported through the ABS Real World Data® database for the major bull studs in the AI industry.

We conducted a study in 2017 evaluating the use of Sexcel™ gender-skewed semen in conjunction with a fixed time AI protocol. Nearly 900 beef cows and heifers in six different herds were used in this project. Based on our experience, Sexcel™ gender-skewed semen can successfully be used in fixed-time AI protocols among animals that exhibit estrus.”
