St. Jacobs Says... We continue our discussion with Doug Nelson of Cowtown Holsteins, of Derby Line, VT, in the next couple “STJ says” pieces. As we mentioned before, Nelson has assembled one of the great herds in the nation today with 114 Excellent cows and seven of them being EX-95. He also milks over 2,500 head of commercial cows in the green mountain state. Doug started a herd of his own with 22 head when he was a teenager. His focus then, as it is today, was udders. He wants cows with really good udders, “high off the ground and easy to work with… udders that milk out fast and clean.” He also likes cows with width and believes this is a critical piece of breeding great ones. This breeding philosophy helped him create the great sire Nelacres Johanna Senator. Senator had 151 Excellent daughters and was the number one type bull in Canada at one time. Doug remembers having six of them lined up in a row at his herd when EBI acquired the bull from him and they were as good a group of heifers as he ever had. “They were all like peas in a pod, great udders, tall, black, silky and stylish.” Senator’s picture hangs on the wall of Doug’s office and he is very proud of the impact the bull had for breeders of top cattle. For years Doug focused on his commercial herd building cow numbers in several operations but he always had a passion for the great one. I remember the day in 1994 he almost bought Sultry at the Lylehaven Sale. He bid $90,000 and she brought $92,000. He showed up at the sale, loved the cow and decided he wanted her. The crowd was buzzing with why a guy that milked commercial cows would consider such a move. He fell short of buying her that day but it reminded everyone of Doug’s passion, great cattle. An interesting note, that day he bought the cheapest cow in the sale for $850 as well, quite a range in business views. A decade later, Doug’s youngest son Cy was eating dinner with the family and told them he wanted to be a doctor. This set Doug back in his chair! He said “Cy, I would rather you were an undertaker than a doctor, we need to find something else for you to do.” So he and Cy decided to buy some heifers and have Cy provide the labor to raise them while he was a teenager. This sparked his interest in raising good cattle and soon Cowtown Holsteins was started. Doug is proud to have his son Cy and his other family members working along side him in the businesses he has developed and next issue we will discuss some of those businesses.
